Nope it wasn't a daddy long legs, it was furry
00:23
spiders don't have fur
Tarantulas have fur.
they can't have fur as they have no skin... they can have hair tho
USELESS USE OF PEDANTRY
of course
Wait.
How can they not have skin?
00:32
doesn't stretch
exoskeleton and such
Not a good enough answer.
> 1) the thin layer of tissue forming the natural outer covering of the body of a person or animal
I've already reached my daily excessive pedantry cap :P
I would have accepted "It's an arachnid, not an animal"
Also.
Do. Not. Google "spider skin".
what happens if I do?
I'm sure there's an answer to this particular question in there but....gods
There are three words that repeated quite a lot in the context of the first page of results.
"Burrow" and "Surgically Remove"
00:35
> Like other arthropods, spiders have to molt to grow as their cuticle ("skin") cannot stretch.
Spiders (order Araneae) are air-breathing arthropods that have eight legs and chelicerae with fangs that inject venom. They are the largest order of arachnids and rank seventh in total species diversity among all other orders of organisms. Spiders are found worldwide on every continent except for Antarctica, and have become established in nearly every habitat with the exceptions of air and sea colonization. As of September 2015, at least 45,709 spider species, and 114 families have been recorded by taxonomists. However, there has been dissension within the scientific community as to how all these...
FUCKING SKIN BITCHES
@ScottPack nasty
@TildalWave I told you.
00:52
Have you seen spiders flying through the air? They've colonized the air too.

Morning!
Were they daring to review the Bear!
plus these links?
[that of @AviD]
there were 2 changes in that edit: #1 was adding in a link to wikipedia article which was NOT under discussion ("this is called...", uh no its not).
#2 was worse - changed numerical footnote linking to text-based footnote linking.
a pointless edit if I've ever seen one.
I happened to have his post open when it was edited, thats why I noticed :-)
Vandalism!
@AviD really weird edit
08:10
right?
no improvement whatsoever
and one mistake
I see that you're also hanging around on that post... keeping busy while you're there... ;-)
sweeping your porch while waiting to shout at the kids stepping on to your lawn?
@AviD yeah - a bit of cleanup. Keeping votes that are really highly voted, and related, but shoving all the others into chat.
sure
Adi
Adi
@AviD Why?
08:25
so that,s over 100 comments deleted/moved to chat so far :-)
Adi
Adi
The links thing was pointless, yes
But the Diceware thing is correct
@Adi but the diceware "clarification" was wrong
Morning All
Morning
Morning
08:36
I'll go with the tigger on the diceware thing.. Diceware != CorrectHorse , although they are similar
diceware is definitely a helpful mechanism to get to correcthorse. But the bear was very specifically not talking about that...
Adi
Adi
Alright, @RоryM @AviD
Explain the differences between the two
@Adi so for me the difference is more in implementation than intent. Diceware is a specific system which uses dice (the clue is in the name) and it dictates a method of creation using their list and a set of dice. to say that every system that's based on choosing sets of words and concatenating them is diceware is, to me, not correct
so you could say that Diceware is one form of "CorrectHorse" style password generation
but not that it's the only form
Morning
mornin'
Adi
Adi
08:50
Sorry. Still didn't explain the differences. You're just telling me they're not the same
@Arperum Morning
@Adi Ok you can do correcthorse password generation without dice, you cannot do diceware password generation without dice, therefore they are not the same
better?
it's like saying a sparrow is a bird therefore all birds are sparrows
Adi
Adi
@RоryMcCune So the only difference is the source of randomness?
diceware is presecriptive in the method (and to an extent in the list used) from what I've read of it.. it is one example of a correcthorse style password generation system
@Adi I think there are other specific implementation details that could be different, but are not critical.
Adi
Adi
@RоryMcCune If you're defining the differences between birds solely based on their diet, then probably the vast majority of birds are sparrows
08:52
it is not the only example
@RоryMcCune well put, btw
@Adi heh wut
Adi
Adi
@AviD birds = algo. Diet = source of randomness
Not that hard to follow
the "most birds are sparrows" part
@Adi sure if you want to stretch that analogy, falcons have different diets to sparrows :)
Adi
Adi
@AviD I refer you to the If in the beginning of the sentence
08:54
@Adi yes, that is the part that amused me
Adi
Adi
@AviD it sets the criteria for the following imaginary scenario in which that analogy resides
which is what amused me
Adi
Adi
@RоryMcCune I refer you the "vast majority" part of the sentence
I understood the mechanics of humour in your statement, that doesnt mean I didnt find it funny
Adi
Adi
Slightly different from "all"
@RоryM But, anyway, I see what you mean. Specifics of an implementation
08:55
@Adi sure, but to come back to the original point, I'm not sure that the vast majority of "CorrectHorse" password generation systems are diceware....
@RоryMcCune actually I would say that the most commonly used "proper" correcthorse probably IS diceware.
Adi
Adi
DSS is an implementation of DSA with specific parameters
@AviD sure it's definitely the one I've heard of most in that regard, so most common would seem likely
@Adi indeed
09:46
@Adi cool!
I feel like @Rоry's talk would be more appropriate IN the bar...
Adi
Adi
@AviD Yeah. It's gonna very very interesting to have Rory there
The Finnish awkwardness
lack of awareness for "awkward silence"
@Rоry consider this an open invitation to the Israel chapter too ;-)
Adi
Adi
combined with the Scottish general openness
should be a blast
aaaand now Rory is banned in Israel :D
lol
Adi
Adi
@deed02392 Yo George! What's up?
09:50
hey @Adi :) nothin much! how are you?
Adi
Adi
Same old same old
Generally all good
awesome :D
i feel like it's not been long because i get lots of updates from your FB feed
Adi
Adi
@deed02392 Yeah. Last week I went on a 4-day streak
I usually have one of those every couple of months
A lot has been going on with Russia, Syria, and Finnish politics, so there's a lot to rage/whine about :D
haha yea fair enough, well done for keeping up with it

money.aol.co.uk/2015/10/27/… <-- who knew "ethical hackers" were the Chicken sexers of the IT world!
WHAT THE HELL IS A CHICKEN SEXER
HOW IS THAT A JOB
IS THIS REALLY A THING
"open to everyone" seems to actually mean the opposite
> When ability matters more than exams
Anyone can sex a chicken?
6
are you asking or offering?
Asking.
I have not been inclined to handle things that may or may not be cocks.
4
@JourneymanGeek starwhore
@AviD In the chicken meat industry hens are worthless, because they are not big enough, in the egg industry cocks are worthless because they are terribly bad at laying eggs.
So, they like big meaty cocks and broody hens?
@Arperum that last part was bear-worthy.
@Arperum hens are worthless because they are not big enough - seems like actual size would be a bigger factor than gender, when it comes to being big enough.
@AviD The thing is that these chicks get a stupid short amount of time to grow up, and the cocks are literally bigger. There is no way a hen can get this big, because it is just not possible for these to grow big enough. And AFAIK the sexing is done when the chicks are maybe 1 or two days old, there isn't really a size difference between them at that time AFAIK. I have no clue how they figure out the difference between the different genders though.
ahh you mean its not the current size that is at issue, but the expected future size.
12:03
Yes.
These chickens also grow so fast that after a while they can't even carry their own weight anymore.
By that time they are also half naked because their feathers grow way slower than those of a normal chicken.
...
@RоryMcCune what have you started here?
(My parents got a couple of these meat chickens once, the difference with the other chickens was kinda scary.)
also for any innocent bystander that happens into this room - I want to emphasize that this discussion is about actual chickens, i.e. poultry, and it is not a euphemism at all.
though assuming the opposite would have been fair, in this place.
Oct 19 at 15:14, by AviD
THIS IS NOT A SEX CHAT ROOM
(Also, yes, I am so totally a starwhore. Only cause the same things that amuse me amuse other people)
@JourneymanGeek apparently, chicken sex is a legitimate, if dodgy, topic here.
12:15
no no no
chicken sexing is.
that really should be "chicken gender". sex!=gender.
@JourneymanGeek chicken gendering.
I guess.
I wonder if they don't gender other fowl tho
@JourneymanGeek I think their is no industry of the size of the chicken industry for other fowl.
12:33
@AviD Half of all English words are euphemisms, including "euphemism".
12:44
@AviD OBVIOUSLY you haven't been in this chatroom long enough
@JourneymanGeek salute
@ThomasPornin o/
@Arperum \o
@JukEboX \o/
Looks like if you build an airstrip on top of a reef you can extend international borders
I better get building. The State Of JukEboX will soon be a reality
13:09
@JukEboX will there be nice beaches?
@AviD evidently I have uncovered a latent DMZ theme of ... "interest" in chickens
That's foul
what does the arabic say
@Ohnana Ask @Adi. He might know.
1,000 chicks an hour with a 98% success rate
there's no way i have that kind of dexterity
13:22
while staring at chicken weens
that's a chick every four seconds
@Ohnana of max a couple days old.
@Ohnana pls I cannot use that word, do not tempt me
imagine sexing chicks 12 hours a day... the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak D:
the flesh is spongy and bruised!!!
starwhore
3
@deed02392 I think "chicken sexing" is going to be my new metaphor for CAPTCHA cracking.
13:27
pls no sex talks
@Ohnana yes! :D
@Simon where is the real simon then
you're right @AviD that was too obvious
A censored Simon is not a real #me.
it's just been a while since i've been up there you see
@Simon indeed
indeed02392
@Simon I don't know why, but this made me laugh a whole lot more than it should have.
13:36
@deed02392 That would take stamina alright.
Adi
Adi
Hoooly shit!
Tor Browser intentionally reduces the precision of time in its JS engine
@Ohnana I suppose it says dried foul.
@Adi What does the arabic say?
Adi
Adi
@JourneymanGeek Ha?! What? Where?
36 mins ago, by Journeyman Geek
user image
Adi
Adi
@JourneymanGeek Dried broad bean
13:48
hm. foul.
Now I'm confused. I was told they were fava beans.
Adi
Adi
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, seems like whoever translated it didn't know the English word
So do you serve them with a liver and a nice chianti or not?
Adi
Adi
@JourneymanGeek Same thing
> Vicia faba, also known as the broad bean, fava bean, faba bean, field bean, bell bean, or tic bean
Adi
Adi
Usually vigorously boiled, cooled down, and served as a levantine salad like this
(EVOO + Lemon + Parsley + Salt + Garlic)
Sometimes chickpeas are added
Sometimes chickpea paste (hummus) is used
13:50
sounds pretty tasty, actually
Adi
Adi
Yup. The Levantine cuisine is a pretty neat sub-category of the Mediterranean cuisine (North and East Mediterranean, that is)
Mmmm.. a glass of Arak after that dish.. yum yummm
lol
Isn't that alcoholic?
(One of those things I've found confusing)
Adi
Adi
@JourneymanGeek Yup, very close to Raki
Adi
Adi
Or Ракія
13:55
More that, isn't alcohol culturally/religiously disallowed?
Adi
Adi
In the Levant, culturally, absolutely not.
Religiously, depends on who you ask, but generally yes
Adi
Adi
The Milk of the Soul, we call it
Adi
Adi
Because it's clear, but once you mix it with water it turns milky
Adi
Adi
(talking about Arak/Raki)
Yeah, I know what it is, and that pastis is similar
@JourneymanGeek and just to complicate things further - dont forget that the Levant includes at least a handful of completely different religions, not to mention the different sects and sub-religions...
(not drunk it tho, I have a cultural and vaguely religious bar against getting intoxicated)
again talking about sects....
Adi
Adi
13:59
@AviD The DMZ
:-)
Well, officially alcohol, but who know what wierd substances our ancestors imbibed.
Now its a sect chat room?
@RoryAlsop yes pristine beaches for all. And clear blue water
14:17
For fucks sake man, this guy is reviewing low-quality posts and yet he posts one:
This is a blatant case of "While this link may answer the question, ..."
@Adi wow, that's great
Adi
Adi
@deed02392 I know, right?
I never thought about it
14:36
@Simon you sure are serious today
y so srs
Because otherwise I get censored.
There is a SCC? (Simon Communications Council) ?
Wait, we're supposed to communicate with him?
@Simon pls, there's only one word that gets you censored in here
well by me anyway
and that was only 'cause you agreed to it :)
Roro: unaware of sarcasm since 1973.
14:49
@deed02392 BTW did you know about the internal DMZ
@Simon :op nice work remembering my birth year
Internal you say?
@JukEboX I liked the DMZ so much, I recreated in at my Employers
well kind of similar
@RоryMcCune Whaaaaaaaaaaat? I totally typed a random number.
LOL I am trying to do that
@Simon LOLz
@JukEboX we're using lets-chat which is up on github
the docker container is pretty easy to get working
14:56
@RоryMcCune no i did not :D
is it part of the new chat server
@deed02392 yeah we have a room called the lounge, that I was going to call the DMZ,but then felix beat me to it
also no one else would've known what I meant if I'd called it the DMZ
my irc bouncer has died
the server's been down it seems
@deed02392 yarr
@RоryMcCune really? no one would know what a DMZ is in one of the premeir security consulting companies of the UK?
@RоryMcCune link? I will see if it is blocked
15:03
@AviD :op no, no one would know why I wanted to call a chatroom that
@JukEboX it's an internal box at $employer he's talking about
oh okay, that makes more sense
15:25
we use lync because fuck me
what's wrong with Lync?
it likes to crash when the toast notification pops up for a new message
so you're going to answer someone and it just freezes
ahh, I've not experienced that issue, what version?
v. 1.microsoft
@Simon pls somon, everyone knows you never use a v1 microsoft product
15:28
@AviD Is this not a low-quality post: security.stackexchange.com/questions/103712/… ?
It's a link-only answer.
major release is number 15. it's rebranded as skype for business
@Ohnana weird, I use that on home and business PCs don't recall it crashing much..
ahh well PCs are odd beasts at times
@RоryMcCune yeah for me it just eats all available resources then dies
plus my linux box last night managed to munge it's own filesystem... like wat
@Ohnana ah for me it's managing to see with 145Mb of memory use quite happily
@Ohnana that's never good
@RоryMcCune yeah everything crashed in userspace, then i rebooted and got kicked into emergency mode
one live disk and two fsck runs later it was fixed, but what the fuuuuuck
15:32
@AviD OVID PLS I ASKED A Q QUESTION
@Ohnana yoinks, running fsck is always a scary business "hmm, when did I last back this filesystem up"
@Simon WHY DO I NEED TO BE THE ARBITER OF LOW QUALITY
just downvote the damn thing, leave me out of it
@AviD BECAUSE WHEN I APPROVED A LOW-QUALITY POST THAT WASN'T A GOOD APPROVE, I GOT REKT
AND NOW, I FLAGGED IT AND IT WAS DECLINED SO I WANT YOU TO REKT THE ASSHOLES WHO DECLINED IT
@RоryMcCune luckily i ascribe to the "all data stored on this is either on a cloud service or 100% disposable"
MODS ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO DELETE AN ANSWER JUST BECAUSE ITS CRAP
15:33
@AviD IT'S A LINK ONLYYYYY
so i was just like fsck -y biiiitch
MY FLAG SHOULD BE ACCEPTED
I WANT YOU TO REKT THE DECLINERS
@Ohnana ahh the luxury of someone with a good upstream internet link!
@Simon not really, its a generic "bad things could happen and oh btw here is also a link"
@AviD pLs.
15:34
@RоryMcCune yeepers. the only thing annoying would be redownloading my steam library
I'm this (-----) close of pulling a kalinuh.
@Ohnana with my marvellous 1Mb upstream, I 'm kind of careful with cloud backups...!
@Simon do it. Do it now.
@RоryMcCune oh man. that calls for a permanent terabyte drive with rsync on cron
@AviD You're such an Egyptian jerk.
15:35
HEY EVERYBODY, @SIMON NEEDS SOME ENCOURAGEMENT TO BURN HIS ACCOUNT AND LEAVE US FOREVER
That's not my definition of a kalinuh.
kalinuh: the act of rage-quitting for a few months.
usage: ovid is such an asshole, he makes me want to kalinuh.
@Simon hey @kalina will be back, she's just taking a little while out
but I'm sure she's missing our witty banter already!
I bet she's enjoying it.
Nah she doesn't miss it.
@Simon how do you know, did she tell you.. is she in the land of the frozen bear with you now?
#DaysOfOurDMZ
Yeah and turns out she's a man with a ween.
15:42
@Simon ...
what did we say about that word
:op
I don't remember.
@Simon goldfish
inb4 "but others use it too"
^
Just like my ween.
@Simon "others" use your W word... have you told your donut about this
Is others code for @kalina
15:43
it's not worth the money
Is our world real
@lady.donut Others are using @Simon's ween. Just FYI.
@RоryMcCune If you are in chat with someone, and someone else tries to contact you, the notifier never tells you - it highlights the existing chat.
You're all jelly of my ween being used.
It hangs under load - ie more than two chat sessions at once
It cannot handle adding individuals to sessions where a desktop is already shared - you need to exit and restart
I have about 6 more fundamental complaints with it
15:46
@Simon isnt that the same thing?
@AviD Burning my account implies losing all the rep I own!
And boy, losing almost 3k rep would be a disaster.
@Simon @kalina X2
Nevermind, almost 2.3k
Man, I suck.
2
@Simon you put jelly on your ween...? umm...
Is that a strange version of the Ol' King Clancy?
15:50
@RoraΖ Hahahaha, 10/10.
Where has @kalina been? Haven't seen here in here for a while.
@RoraΖ pls, that guy's average score is still much higher than somoins.
@AviD I forget how to check that
(low quality * high quantity) still beats just (low quality * low quantity)
more annoying, though.
Another edit pls
15:53
@AviD Right, I was actually surprised at how many of his answers were 10+. I mostly see this 1-2 votes. I know he's hit a few rep trains
@AviD isnt that supposed onebox the site?
@Simon shu'up
[site:security.stackexchange.com]
I DON'T REMEMBER OVID
all the badges they have are edit badges
oh my goodness
@AviD Ugh I have to construct queries?!
@RoraΖ just such a query exists
its not "have to", its "GET to"!!
ha!
weird. maybe data.se is an exception.
so is a51
