morning @Ninefingers
probably good for sec - although it's gonna be broad
go and ping it over :-)
did you see I popped one on elliptic curves over to you
seemed to be a question on why RSA over elliptic (which seemed a bit outside our remit here) but feel free to ping it back if the reason is purely an implementation one
@RoryAlsop Yep, thanks, I edited it. I agree. I'm in two minds about moving it even, as it is very broad.
"Talk to me about anti-piracy measures" is how it reads.
@Ninefingers yeah - I can see a couple of questions in it though, so we can have a hack about at it
@RoryAlsop I'm hoping for "hard" crypto answers on that one. I think the same question could be asked both here and on crypto, really.
@RoryAlsop Ok. I'll leave a comment saying I'm thinking of migrating it and if nobody objects, I'll ping it over.

@Rory OP agreed. All yours:

@mikeazo migrated your question - if you register an account, you'll be able to receive rep/notifications for your question here.

Hey @Ninefingers - I'm also thinking you might like this one. What do you think?

Q: Select a TripleDES key so that it effectively behaves as regular DES

Mister SmithI'm working with a smartcard (DESFire) that supports both TripleDES and DES. In the specs it is stated that both modes of operation use 16 bytes keys. When the first 8 bytes in the key are identical to the trailing 8 bytes, the DES mode is used. Otherwise, the TDEA algorithm is selected. This is...

@RoryAlsop I think so - I thought exactly the same thing when I read it and was just about to flag it.

Does the StackElectronics logo remind anyone else of a Companion Cube?

Dunno why it makes me think of one.

@Iszi Yes
@JeffFerland Nice to know I'm not totally insane. Thanks.
Or, maybe we both are.

Hairball?
heh, I see we read the same webcomics
any you fellows happen to use basecamp?
nevermind, ill go look on webapps nothing to install
@AviD Care to share?
@AviD Any specific strip? 'Cause I'm still not getting it.
ach, i still dont get why the onebox sometimes squishes my pics....
Aha!
On an unrelated note, anyone got tips for this?

Could someone help me figure out why Excel might not be processing formulas on a spreadsheet?
yeah, theres somewhere to shut off automatic calculations.... hang on
@AviD It's not on every spreadsheet, just some.
18:33
in the formulas tab, click on "calculation options"
Particularly those that are "formatted as a table".
so you probably have that set to "Automatic except for Tables" ;)
really
Nope, set to Auto.
harumph.
And when I try to force a calculation, it says the cell I'm trying to calculate contains a constant.
18:35
and what happens if you click "calculate now"?
Clicking "Calculate Now" produces nothing. "Evaluate Formula" gives that error.
All the cell has is an equals sign followed by a crap-ton of nested IFs. But even if I just do "=1+1" it still won't work.
is it formatted as text?
Ive noticed that sometimes plays havok with formulas
@AviD Was, but I've changed it to "General".
ah, but its already been havoked.
enter the cell, and then leave it - the formula will get recalced.
Oh hey!
Spiffy.
18:42
ftr, if you have the formula in first, then set it to text, the formula still is calced.
And, since it was a table, it already populated the formula all the way down.
i'm not sure its not a bug, but its definitely a bit unexpected behavior
I definitely know a lot more about excels nooks and crannies than I'd like to.

Some days I hate copy and paste.

@thisjosh It is a very useful tool, until other people begin to use it, too.
22:08
Its always the other people. Except when it's me.
"L'Enfer, c'est les autres." (Sartre)

Jean Paul?!
What you infer is what is?
@thisjosh Yes, Jean-Paul. No, "Enfer" is not the French word for "to infer".
Oh inferno! oops
It means "Hell consists in the other people."
22:16
autes is a form of to be?
nope
@thisjosh "autres" means "others". From latin "alter" (as in "alter ego" = "another me")
Ah. Please forgive my slaughter of language.
I was leaning too strongly on the exestentialist idea.
@thisjosh No problem. That's just you being an "other", hence hellish. You can't help it.
I think I do help it. I am strongly regarded in some circles, and definately in a negative light.
That's an achievement. Is there a badge for it ?
22:25
Yes, it's black with ozzing slime. It says 'I told you so'
Yes, its neat except when they make you clean up the mess. Knowing what will work you become the best candidate to fix it.
