@tildal - I would suspect dodgy capacitors, so probably fixable. Can you open it up? Worth asking over in Electronics.SE though
@Lucas - awright?
@RoryAlsop Yeah I would ask there but I can't open the bloody thing it's all in one piece with nothing to remove, unless I crack it open LOL
@RoryAlsop yep yep all good ^^ wby?
@RoryAlsop BTW when you delete a question by an obvious troll but the question had a decent enough answer to it (that the troll wouldn't accept but with upvotes otherwise), do you contact the answerer and "apologize" for deleting the thread, or just leave it be?
@TildalWave sounds like it might be overheating? try placing it in an open, airy place.
@TildalWave scold him for feeding the troll.
@AviD Are you implying that I moved with my ex too quickly?!?
12:14
@AviD yup I did, but last time it did this to me it took nearly a day to cool down... I though maybe there's some other option like an automated circuit breaker in the router that I could just bypass or manually reset
@Simon at your age, everything is too quickly.
and it was @Adnan implying stuff, not me.
@AviD Typical @Adnan.
@TildalWave doesnt sound like it has anything to do with the router, its the brick - but then, I know nothing about electronics or electricity.
@AviD Like dawn comes too quickly.
@AviD wasn't like that, he was not feeding the troll really... it was just someone that wanted proof that we actually went to space and when we gave him tons of proof he said that's not eyewitness accounts ... so I decided to delete it all because he'll obviously then have to go seek "evidence" on his own, if he can't believe anything from "the guys on the internet"
12:16
(okay, not nothing, but very little - so I would not suppose to give non-experience-based advice)
@tildal - ah, it actually is physically heating up? Scratch my previous answer. Replace it before it catches fire
and it definitely is the brick
@TildalWave hahaha, thats funny
@AviD I wasn't, it was that idiot @Terry
@RoryAlsop @TildalWave or just place it in your lap when you plug in.
@RoryAlsop hmmm yes... the thing is it doesn't get THAT hot... just warm-ish but obviously I was moving it around too much or something and didn't like it
12:17
@Adnan typical @Terry.
@AviD hahaha
@AviD If it's with the real characters, I'd watch it. I'd like to see some Ygritte action
@Adnan truth is, a porn version of Game of Thrones is.... Game of Thrones.
@Adnan but oh yeah, Ygritte is fiiiiine.
Dem scottish redheads.
@AviD You know nothing, @AviD.
@Simon - does she indeed?
12:19
@RoryAlsop lol
@AviD She's Scottish? moves to Scotland
cant believe I missed that...
@AviD Ahhh
@AviD - over here we call 'em gingers and we laugh at them (cv my lead singer :-)
@TildalWave oh yeah. The actress, but also the character - Wildlings from the north? that's totally a reference to Scotland.
@RoryAlsop Rude... and not ginger??
12:20
BOREDOM STRIKES
.oO( BORRRRRRREDDDDDDDDDDDDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMM )
@RoryAlsop Thought you lot wanted to BE ginger.
why would anybody actually want to be ginger?
@kalina have you SEEN ygritte??
God damn it! Haven't met a single Scottish girl in Finland. Sucks!
redheads are hawt.
2
12:21
@kalina Only to be the single sexist breed on earth!
@AviD not really into girls to be fair
I did my experimenting
@Adnan yeah, they got it cold enough at home, dont need to travel to finland for that.
@AviD Now that.. that, I can star.
@AviD - Erik is seriously ginger. And on stage he adds more orange - to glow under the UV stage lights
@kalina Jaws drop. Silence ensues while everyone pictures that.
12:22
@AviD Ewwww.. it's @kalina! Why would you wanna picture that?
@AviD eh, it shouldn't be a surprise
pfft - you kids
and @AviD
and @Adnan
pfff you old people
well... all of you
Why would anyone want to picture that?
hahahaha
12:23
Hehehe.. old people, that's a great understatement when addressing @RoryA
@Adnan - I'm guessing the pony is not actually a photo, but what we call an avatar
@RoryAlsop you would guess correctly
@RoryAlsop But, still.. I mean.. her!
as much as I wish I had wings in real life, I am in fact a human
because lets face it, having wings would be awesome
well, duh!
12:24
Playing at the office ^^
@LucasKauffman Fuck yea!
some of the most awesome moments have been flying gliders, with mellow music on my headphones (Pink Floyd - it was the chill out stuff back before you were born) through clouds and circling in thermals with eagles
@RoryAlsop You flew a glider? Is there anything you haven't done, Rory?
nope
nothing
I invented everything and am in fact ubiquitous
:-)
(some of the above may not be 100% accurate)
@RoryAlsop if you, in fact, invented everything
please explain to me
12:26
@RoryAlsop Except Cryptography. We all know that is the domain of The Bear.
well, I said not 100%
how did you know what electricity was when you first invented it, since no electrical devices existed?
@kalina 42
@TerryChia 24
@kalina - it tingled
12:27
42 is not a valid answer in this instance
@Lucas - I can't follow that link...
as well you know
btw, @RoryAlsop. Got a chance to review that blog post?
@LucasKauffman Who went through my closet?
@LucasKauffman clicks link ... probably about to be damaged for life
12:28
@RoryAlsop What's that?
@RoryAlsop so you are responsible for donkey humping?
GUYS, PHP 5.5.5 has been released!!!! I bet they added a comment to 5.5.4 and recompiled.
@AviD No, that's on @poly
@Simon How many unit test failed this time?
@Simon recompiled? How silly of you!
12:29
@TerryChia Probably over 9000.
@Adnan WHATEVS.
yep, pretty damaged for life
@Simon That would imply they had 9000 unit test written. Not likely.
@Simon They just hex-edit the binaries
@Adnan blablablabla
and then I look at chat and see @Simon mentioning a new version of PHP, puts it all into perspective
12:30
@Adnan What? No.
@Adnan I did no such donkey humping.
They just run ./increment-version.sh.
@TerryChia :|
.sh? It's definitely a PHP script, duh.
++PHP;
12:31
@kalina So there is something more damaging than me?
@Adnan Not in chat.SE.
@Adnan My wiener.
@Adnan even a new version of PHP is less damaging than you
6
@Simon nah, thats not going to get very far.
dayum
12:31
@kalina Ouch
@AviD I know :(
@Adnan here's some water, put yourself out
@kalina Damn, that's good.
@kalina @Adnan cheez, you guys, get a room.
@kalina Oh no, that's my permanent state. Always on fire.
12:32
/cc @AviD Can we get that pinned?
@kalina Mocking PHP and @Adnan? Slip a bear in there and you've just about hit all the room memes.
Yeah, some cheezy stuff right here.
@ScottPack yay I fit in
We should rotate the @Adnan mocking daily.
Terry Chia on October 17, 2013

This blog post is inspired by a question on Information Security Stack Exchange about two weeks ago. The question seems to have attracted quite a bit of attention (some of it in an attempt to defend the flawed scheme) so I would like to write a more thorough analysis of the scheme.

Let us start by discussing the current standard for authentication. Passwords. No one is arguing that passwords are perfect. Far from it. Passwords, at least passwords in use by most people are incredibly weak. Short, predictable, easy to guess. This problem is made worse by the fact that most applications do not sto …

12:33
I was a respected member of this community before @kalina arrived.
@AviD Ewww!
@AviD he's not good enough for me
@Adnan ahh, 3rd grade flirting. Now pull her hair!
@kalina Lucky for me!
@Terry - minor edits only. Spelling. I see you had a draft saved separately - shall I just delete that one?
touch my hair, eat through a straw for the rest of your life
12:34
@Adnan That's what you get for flagging random crap. :)
Debunking squirrel?
@RoryAlsop Yup, sure. Thanks. :)
I invented that
@ScottPack Squirrel Girl!
@Adnan I wouldn't say respected, Bob.
12:34
Squirrel Girl, real name Doreen Green, is a fictional character and superheroine in the . Her first appearance was in Marvel Super-Heroes vol. 2, #8, a.k.a. Marvel Super-Heroes Winter Special (cover-dated Jan. 1992), in a story plotted and drawn by Steve Ditko and scripted by character conceptualizer Will Murray. Her ability to control squirrels is surprisingly effective and has allowed her to defeat major supervillains. She was a member of the Great Lakes Avengers for much of the duration of that group, and later began serving as nanny to Danielle Cage, the daughter of Luke Cage and Jess...
Hey look @Simon. Another comic book nerd.
nurdz
@AviD You missed WrongRory and I waffling on yesterday.
Also. I'm reading through that Cracked article.
12:35
@ScottPack reminds me of youtube.com/watch?v=290sa-PRZmc
@TerryChia this so much, just think, if he hadn't abused flags, I wouldn't even be here
I'm sorry, that was somewhat funny. It can't have been Red Dwarf. Must have been a public access spoof.
from this we can conclude that everything is in fact @Adnan's fault
3
Except for the rubber fisting mit. I don't want to blame that on him.
@kalina You are just getting better and better aren't you?
12:38
Great job, @Adnan.
@TerryChia Remember, 2 weeks is too early.
let me get this straight - did I invent @Adnan? That's not going to look good on my CV
@RoryAlsop No, @Adnan is the corruption of normal humans. Sort of like elves and orcs.
Saw that on Failblog. Good stuff.
:P
12:41
Oh, @Polynomial. There's a gas mask for you.
Great. So now I'm the new @Simon
@Adnan Ha! I wonder who was me before I came here.
Jumalauta!!
@ScottPack Where
@Polynomial Scroll down to #4 cracked.com/…
12:43
@M'vy Bad timing. :P
The DMZ got weird again.
@ScottPack hahaha
I know a guy who collects that kinda stuff
Of course you do.
@TerryChia You mean The DMZ is back to normal again?
XD
@Polynomial Sure. "a guy".
12:44
Oh, how are your new windows?
What's "normal" BTW?
Also: hi
@ScottPack Windowy.
@M'vy You defended, yes?
@M'vy it's not "Normal" at the moment because there isn't an @Adnan insult anywhere visible in the main chat frame at the moment
@M'vy You chose the wrong time to come here.
12:45
@ScottPack Yep, a year afo almost now
Seriously.
Then where the hell have you been?
@kalina We gotta fix that!
Hey @Adnan, you suck!!!
@ScottPack well i finish my teaching contract until june, then took like 2 months vacations
Now I'm looking for a suitable job
@M'vy Any leads?
@ScottPack Went to Ireland a month ago for appoinment
But it's a no go.
Sent dozen of CV, merely 2 answers so far
And Job site does not understand what's a Ph.D is anyway...
@Adnan It's seems like it's always that way these days ^^
12:50
@Scott - can you post a pic of the gas mask. I am always on the lookout for masks for my bass player
errr...ok
ahhh
maybe not
Oh com'on
SOME PEOPLE HERE ARE AT WORK
XD
12:50
You sure?
@RoryAlsop Kinky choice for a Christmas present.
@RoryAlsop right, that's a mask for lead singer.
THANK YOU.
I should have guessed anything from cracked would not be SFW
pretty much everything is safe for my work
but yeah that was borderline
12:51
pffft - you dun well @Poly
pretty much nothing is for my work
@AviD you mean, it was a microphone she was holding?
^^
@M'vy that was a she?
@AviD well, Idk, but I take that as default. Or else, it would Really be creepy ^^
because that way its not???
and he/she seemed to have long hair
@AviD it's less :)
12:53
The gender of whoever's wearing that doesn't change the creepiness at all.
I'm with @Simon here.
@Simon you might have a point
@Simon seems to have given a lot of thought to this.
@Simon is clearly defending the use of wangmasks.
@AviD I'm very philosophical when I don't sleep, which means all the time.
@Polynomial Brits never understand what I say.
@kalina heuheuheuheu
@kalina huhuhuhuh
@kalina OH, they said PCs. My 16GB MacBookPro isn't a PC.
Using his logic, my PC is twice as powerful as the next generation of consoles with 16GB of RAM
12:55
@kalina huhu
Isn't the RAM in the PS4 GDDR5 though?
@ScottPack PC = Personal Computer, a Mac is a PC
@kalina Brag about it.
@kalina Get. Out.
A Mac is also technically an "IBM compatible" PC as well, now
so, believe what you want to
12:56
The statement is bullshit nevertheless, but you can't really compare it with a normal PC.
I, at least, remember the days of the XT.
you apple hipsters should realize that @kalina is 100% right.
Always bothered me about those commericals...
@AviD Honestly, so was I.
@ScottPack ahh, I remember my XT fondly.
I wasn't bothered by that because I have better things to do.
GRUMPY SIMON IS BACK.
12:58
@Simon #8?
Still sucks that the Haswell MBA cannot be configured for 16GB of RAM.
@AviD wut
@Simon from the cracked article....
@AviD Post the pic and quickly delete it.
just cos you guys can view it at work - you with your lairs, and your friendly hacker environments
12:59
hehe, nooooo
Also, have you guys seen the iMessage stuff from HITB?
@RoryAlsop Is it still a lair if I'm on the 2nd floor?
@RoryAlsop I do have an IKEA futon in here.
@AviD yay, I like being technically right
Well. I was just about to pay for Pandora, and noticed the form they use to collect CC info doesn't appear to use ssl.
@ScottPack sweet. We need to put a couch in here too. Just need to find one that opens into a comfortable guest bed.
13:01
@Scott - lairs can even be airborne, and have angora couches. Of course that would be an Air hair lair (English Received Pronunciation joke...sorry)
Did you guys see the goldigger prank video?
@ScottPack Pandora doesn't use Paypal? Surprising.
@AviD That's what this is. It's not overly comfortable as a couch, because the seat part is too deep, but it actually has springs.
@TerryChia They do support paypal, but I'm not sure I know the ole lady's codes.
i mean, there's lots of divs and javascript, so maybe the post action called by teh submit button goes over an encrypted channel, but I'm not seeing it yet.
13:14
@ScottPack Is the form in an <iframe>?
Also, thoughts?
Not that I can find.

Q: Is it possible to use a GPG or SSH key for web based authentication in a secure fashion?

Terry ChiaLet's say hypothetically I am writing a web application targeting technically inclined, security-conscious users who have no problems generating and using GPG or SSH keys. Is it possible to use said keys to authenticate with a web application in a secure fashion to replace traditional password-b...

I'm using the Firefox built in inspector to look at it. All I can see linked to that button is the CSS. I haven't been able to figure out what happens when you click it.
Granted, this isn't exactly my strong suit either.
@TerryChia I don't see why not. In that respect they are functionally identical to SSL certificates. The trust model is the biggest difference.
@ScottPack Man, I can't even take a look at it. Pandora is blocked in my country and I don't have a VPN. :P
@TerryChia I like the idea,but not sure it can be done with browser as is
13:16
SSL uses a trust chain, GPG uses a trust web, and SSH uses a direct trust.
@ScottPack That's what I'm thinking, yeah. Just unsure if a browser can access a GPG keychain or an SSH key file.
@TerryChia with the right extension, I think it could
In all respects they're different implementations of PKI, so sure. But, like @M'vy said, the hard part is making it actually use them.
@M'vy Indeed. Hence the question. :) Hoping for some Bear knowledge.
I remember using a browser plugin for Firefox to do GPG in gmail. So, yes, it is possible.
13:17
@ScottPack Enigma
Hell, on OSX all of those different keys get stored in your keychain which any app can request access to.
@ScottPack thats not good enough. Rookie mistake.
@M'vy I'm not that old. Jerkface.
@AviD mrr?
the posting to ssl from a non-ssl page.
think we've had some questions on that...
@ScottPack My bad I meant: enigmail :)
13:19
@AviD Probably, but that sounds like application stuff that I usually just zone out on.
heh.
@AviD I'm not hoping for perfect either, though. In this situation I'm not as worried about malicious hijacking than I am the channel being in the clear.
Sure, an ssl iframe can be futzed with, but this sure looks like there is no ssl at all.
13:42
Arrgghhh. Teenagers. I'm going to go hammerclose some innocent questions.
I got mad yesterday.
At the silly questions/duplicates.
That happened quite a few times.
you guys give me so many stars
but I want more
I need the silver badge
GIF ME MOAR
thinks
@Adnan is great
@kalina nah
13:51
Pfft, amateur. I got my silver badge so quickly.
@kalina Are you redefining the concept of rep-whore to star-whore?
@M'vy I am princess star bait, it is my job to collect all of the stars
by my reckoning I only need 2 additional users to star my pinned message to win at the internet
@kalina I guess it's better than being "princess jail bait"
I think there are still parts of the world where I would be considered under the legal age
which has different connotations entirely
13:52
but the list of places that is true is dropping rapidly every year
age of consent doesn't exceed 20 anywhere as far as I know of.
well damn
now I feel old
lowest one is 9, I think
excluding countries that don't have age of consent (those ones usually have other stipulations)
@kalina You're definitely 19.
I think it's still 11 in Japan, iirc.
13:54
@Simon I'm 20
Man, I was close.
@kalina I'm a half-decade older, so don't complain about feeling old.
And figured that you were a Mini-Poly AKA Brit.
@Polynomial Shall we bring @RoryAlsop into the conversation?
I will answer 19 for at least the next 3-4 years though in the real world though
13:55
I still can't believe that I'm 22, time flew by like a fucking jet.
@TerryChia He'll certainly knock us all down a few pegs for talking about "feeling old" ;]
@Simon the next 3 years go even faster
before I know it I'll be 30
fuck that
@Polynomial UGH.
my understanding is that @RoryAlsop is old enough to be my grandfather
But I guess it means that we're having a good life, right?
@kalina not quite that old. he's certainly old enough to be your dad.
13:56
@Polynomial most people in here are old enough to be my dad, it's hardly an achievement
I'm assuming that time doesn't fly by when you're unhappy.
@Polynomial Heh. ;)
@kalina well he'd have to be 56 to qualify as "old enough to be your grandad"
@Polynomial nope, anywhere 30+ is old enough to be my dad
grandad.
13:57
anything 40+ is technically old enough to be my grandad
can't spell ¬_¬
Reading the last few lines in the context of The DMZ is just weird. ;)
technically 38 is old enough.
@Simon we dont believe it either.
@AviD I'm 13.
13:58
@Kalina - as I'm more than double your age...yes
@Polynomial @RoryAlsop IS old. He doesn't FEEL old.
That's my department.
As I always say - how old you feel is not about age, it's about how many kids you have.
@AviD Damn right.
tbf RoryA doesn't look older than late 30s anyway
lucky git
13:59
^
@RoryAlsop you've met Freakyclown, right?
(adds beers to my 'I owe @Poly' list :-)
yep - I have
haha
guess his age
@Polynomial practically a late teenager.
@Polynomial I really enjoyed turning 30. Being able to say, "Back in my 20s" was pretty cool.
13:59
@Polynomial 48
@Poly - I would have said about my age, but the fact that you are asking me makes me doubt that
