@Iszi random picture of the day to revive chat?
@SEJPM Browsing SSES 'cause I'm bored.
Random RDP drops. Reason #3,965 that part-time teleworkers should have company-issued laptops. And reason #10,832 that the current desktop support contractor needs to be fired.
@SEJPM Wanna do another Q&A later?
@MarkBuffalo if it's within the next 2h, yes
Like maybe tomorrow or monday
@MarkBuffalo would also be ok with me
21:08
I want to explain, in detail, how to break TOR. with diagrams, code example, etc
actually, that might be better off as a blog post or something
don't know if I could tldr it. too many assumptions are made
@MarkBuffalo What Q&A? Like an AMA? Or are y'all into some other kinky stuff now?
@Iszi We teamed up to create this post: security.stackexchange.com/questions/116396/…
@Iszi what the fuck does the Q stand for?!
Ah, cool.
@Ohnana Que... and I am not speaking Spanish?
=x
21:10
@Ohnana I'm not sure we want to know.
@Ohnana question?
o_o
@MarkBuffalo I heard there is a NSA PowerPoint presentation that explains that. Maybe start from it ?
3
i think i'm going to go with @SEJPM 's answer
@ThomasPornin DAMMMIT EVEN THE BEAR THINKS I'M NSA
21:11
@ThomasPornin is it public though?
@Ohnana I dunno... but I think I know where to find some other possibilities.
@SEJPM It has been snowdenpublished.
@ThomasPornin Ah, I read that. No, they pretty much said they can't break it unless the user is an idiot
@Ohnana Ah, how did i not think of this? Queening.
My method would be breakable even if the user isn't an idiot
21:13
@Iszi ...i need to google that?
wow. nice work
@Ohnana Actually, this goes together quite nicely. Queening & Asphyxiaphilia.
@Iszi 10/10
@Iszi uh... I don't think I want to look that up
but...
also that was a lot less horrible than i expected
@MarkBuffalo A scientifically sound analysis with explicit, detailed assumptions, would be good. If it is Bad Science, then I will unleash bear #2.
21:15
@ThomasPornin YES. THIS
I'm tempted to bad science it just to unleash Bear #2
<= sadistic
mildly. gently.
@MarkBuffalo The correct term is masochistic. (I sense bad science here.)
@MarkBuffalo the more interesting question would be, "would this be a dupe"?
@ThomasPornin Heh. The Bear wants it explicit.
@SEJPM don't think so
@ThomasPornin Bring in bear number 2. Beat me. I've been bad.
Week-end time.
21:17
@MarkBuffalo Further reinforcing The Bear's assertion. Nice.
@MarkBuffalo the big bear quitted
prepare to die
but 'with manual analysis we can de-anonymize a very small fraction of Tor users'
I don't know if this is still true
I'm going to email the director of the NSA and ask him
@MarkBuffalo I think it largely depends on their definition of "manual analysis". Considering that it's the NSA, you probably don't want to know.
21:20
Manual analysis isn't required if you can handle the data patterns correctly
I don't want to say more than that... yet, I do... I am nearly exploding with excitement
Damn. I was about to make another joke, but realized it would go against my resolution to be less explicit.
...about the manual analysis, that is. Not about your exploding with excitement. Just point it away from your keyboard.
@MarkBuffalo also, wouldn't this be migrated to TOR.se by the local mods?
@Ohnana I've seen Acunetix take over a week to scan a site.
21:28
@Iszi ...?
@MarkBuffalo Replying to a star.
That's... that's bad
I concur.
I know, I'm just wondering why it would take a week to scan
So do I.
21:29
This is either very trusting, or very dumb:

Q: Can someone explain what these options mean? and what to choose?

jackal515I want to block or filter MAC Address but when i went to the router web based page settings i came to lots of options and choices that i don't understand or know which to select. router specifications are (Type: ZTE, Model: ZXHIN H108N). And the drop down lists options are like this; (Mode: Disc...

That's pretty terrible coding right there. I suspect they aren't using memory, and are creating instances of multiple things on the fly.
@Matthew lol. because someone might give him their MAC address?
@Matthew Looks like Super User fodder to me.
@MarkBuffalo Crowdsourcing router settings...
I upvoted and vtc'd
just gonna throw him a bone
This appears to be an Op-Ed piece, and does not attempt to answer the question. — Xander 51 mins ago
WHY DID YOU STAR THAT
Why do people post Op-Eds like this as answers? ugh
21:36
@MarkBuffalo Op-Eds like that I dunno. But sometimes the right answer to a question is "it depends" or "it's up to you", and the best you can do for them is just to lay out the risks and benefits they should probably be considering.
@MarkBuffalo Well, in my opinion, they do it because they want a place to rant, and possibly to passive-agressively attack the management of the companies they work for, with relatively little comeback against them
@Matthew Yea, it doesn't belong there as an answer, though
@Iszi Agreed
@MarkBuffalo Yeah, agreed
Of course, most of those sorts of questions should just be closed as S&M anyway.
@Iszi S&M?
21:39
That reminds me, I've been meaning to tweak that meme answer.
@MarkBuffalo Sadism and Masochism
@MarkBuffalo Short of it is, "primarily opinion-based" used to be called "subjective and argumentative". Shorten to S&A, add Freud...
Sometimes, I think about starting a tumblr which answers the questions that pop up in the side bar on SE from other topic areas, without bothering to read the full question

Q: Why is my fridge melting?

user81993I live in a rental apartment, and it came with a poor quality fridge. It's your standard plastic box with a cold plate around 1/4 of the way down. The upper part is the "freezer" and the lower is the regular fridge. There is little to no insulation, all the freezer part does is gather ice and can...

A: The Memes of Information Security

IsziMeme: S&M Originator: Unknown Cultural Height: Unknown - nearly as old as Sec.SE itself. Background: Prior to being renamed to "Not Constructive", the close option that described questions that would "likely solicit debate, arguments, polling, or extended discussion" was called "Subje...

@Iszi ah. I'm glad I'm not a meme yet
@MarkBuffalo I read that one for lathe tips
@MarkBuffalo I'm not sure that's the type of "woodworking" you're thinking of. At least, it's not the kind that first comes to my mind. But y'all know me.
@Iszi I'M NOT A PERVERT LIKE YOU
@MarkBuffalo You're a pervert of your own special kind?
4
21:47
im a manatee
Soon as I get a house, I'm going into a wood-working frenzy
I repaired my wood lathe this week, so intend to do some turning this weekend
@Matthew is that an euphemism?
@Ohnana BTW: You mind checking the answer linked above for accuracy/PC-ness?
@SEJPM Worryingly, no...
21:51
@SEJPM We need a bot to auto-respond to that question in here.
@Iszi wait, what's your gender?
@MarkBuffalo Read the A.
9 mins till CTF and my environment isnt ready T__T hurry ups 7zips
ah, ok. good thing Scott had you tested
time to get my weekend on

1 hour later…
23:10
Is good to intern under some professor of so-and-so university for Cybersecurity? I have few universities including Virginia, MIT

Should I apply for internships there?
23:33
Got home from good night out with @Rоry and other security folks to find this swag pack waiting for me. Good times:
Also, @Ohnana - I got confused by this. Thought it meant you:
@RoryAlsop Oh man, I want a swag pack!
23:49
Think that one was from Skeptics.SE
Maybe they don't have branded swag yet
But the SO branding is nice. Doesn't quite match my SU hoodie, si wearing them together is contraindicated but the cup is nice (probably get stolen by the kids, same as my ones from Bicycles.SE and Stack Exchange)
@RoryAlsop You're one of "them"! A skeptic! Why can't you be like everyone else and believe everything everyone says? Troublemaker!
Oh man, you multiple swag copies
I am inferior to you.
I'll take a picture at some point showing them all, just to upset @Simon :-)
My Travel.SE towel has been to 11 countries with me
I'll give you $500 for the Secse swag pack
23:55
What? No - just commit to doing the relevant stuff at a Security conference and you can request a pack for free from SE.
Really?!
Hmm... there is a conference coming here in July
You can request swag for them. Typically I get a few t-shirts to give to speakers and folks who ask good questions
I may give a speech
there's a lot of stuff I want to talk about, but I'm retarded when it comes to speaking
I'm much better off writing things down
@RoryAlsop did you see my recent answer? It's kind of what I want to give a speech about
One of the things, anyway

Q: Is it possible to detect security breaches as a user before they're announced?

SEJPMI'm always concerned about the security of services I use. I'm even more concerned since security breaches have been happening more and more lately, and they always generate a lot of noise in the media. Now I'm already trying to secure my accounts to the maximal amount possible, like using 2FA w...
