^ isn't this a RTFM question ?

@HamZa I would say so

@FEichinger oh that's brilliant. Beautiful.

+1 "Someone's username is Crystal Meth. I gotta go do drugs!" said no one ever.michaelb958 Mar 16 at 8:08
herm, why didn't that work..

httpS
no oneboxy teh https

@DavidFreitag See statement from my previous message.

@FEichinger yeah thats how i got to that message ;]
@AviD yo whaaaaat?

ftfy
HTTPS:// --> HTTP://

1:47 AM
I mean, kudos and all for asking the community about it ...

@AviD I know what you meant. I was surprised by the fact that chat won't onebox https

But a long-time user should know what "offensive" means.

@FEichinger One would think.
@AviD Oh, and danka.

@DavidFreitag yeah, if you dig around on meta youll find some q's on that.

@AviD Meh. I tend to avoid meta.

1:51 AM
damn, I was trying to bait you there.

Oh yeah?

@AviD Normally you're the master.
I need a word. I want to use "coherent" but that implies complete or logically sound. I want a word to indicate on that path but not quite so demeaning as "not jibberish".

@ScottPack legible?

@ScottPack intelligible?

@DavidFreitag that sounds condescending.

1:56 AM
That sounds hard.

@AviD "Capable of being understood"

To be fair, this is my own document that I'm describing.

Oh, it is?
Then just go with "not jibberish".

comprehensible?

@AviD Yeah that's what i was just going to say

2:00 AM
@AviD I'm going with that one.

A: Hidden "rollover" blockquoted text is impossible to see on iPhone browsers

tylerlErm... OK. I'm gonna have to disagree. Here's your question in Safari on an iPhone 5s. You'll never guess what the "Click to show spoiler" button does.

@bluefeet "Click to show spoiler" works in the mobile view, but not in the desktop view. Bohemian, I'm not sure what our plans are for supporting desktop views on mobile browsers, but I suspect they're along the lines of "use the mobile view, Luke". — Anna Lear ♦ 17 mins ago
So ... we have a user saying this:
@bluefeet browser. The app is completely useless (TBH I have long forgotten it exists) — Bohemian ♦ 4 hours ago
Who then proceeds to use the desktop site on a mobile browser instead?
The user also doesn't seem to know what spoiler markup is (considering that awkward description of "rollover blockquoted text"), and thinks drugs are inherently offensive.
If it were any other site than SO, I'd assume the account had been infiltrated.

@FEichinger You can post a Q on meta saying: This moderator account appears to have been hacked by someone who doesn't understand computers.
see how far that goes...

@tylerl heh

@tylerl It's seriously tempting.

@FEichinger dooooo eeeeet

2:28 AM
I mean, seriously ... Right now, the impression I got is that this is a moderator elected purely based on repuation, who has hardly any experience and knowledge of the SE system and is a little too opinionated for my taste.

@FEichinger a "little"?

@AviD Hey, I like opinionated mods. As long as they know not to apply that to their diamond as well.

but really, what do you expect? That guys is almost as old as @Cyber-Rory.
@FEichinger No, you're wrong.
It's fine to apply opinionatedness to one's diamond - but as long as it is logical, well-reasoned, and has community support.

Well, the community's opinion comes first, so at that point it's really just reinforcing community opinion - that's not primarily applying the opinion to the diamond.

Telling some random users that he doesnt like their name because he's a septuagenarian, and this isnt the way we did it back in the 1800's, the guy sounds like an insufferable prick.

2:32 AM
But this goes off on a tangent, my point is "I am incompetent and I'll refuse to accept that." is what both of those meta Qs look like, and that's ... not good.

@AviD I didn't vote for 'im.

@AviD Also, age may be an excuse for using Java (teeheeehee), but it's no excuse for being thoroughly incompetent in the use of the very tools he was elected to supervise.

Q: How much leeway do we give possibly offensive usernames

BohemianThe username of this user is "Assh O. Le". However, in his defence he has racked up 420 reputation and 19 bronze badges, so he's not without some merit. Should this be allowed as a "humorous" moniker? Would we be overly prudish to disallow it? Personally, I think this is going too far to be co...

hehe, "Long Phat Kok"

@Bohemian Your father-in-law tells you names from government files for a laugh? Glad to here our data is secure.. as always. — James Oct 21 '13 at 14:06

Q: Vote timestamps have 00:00:00 time

BohemianOn data explorer, why do votes have the time part of their creationDate (a DATETIME datatype, that is a date and a time) all set to midnight? This query shows that this has been the case for some time. It means that certain time sensitive queries can't be made. Can this be fixed?

Man this guy is something else...
four or five of his most recent posts are duplicates.

2:43 AM
Fine... I will post another question then. I think I have attracted a downvoting stalker. I'll collect the info the hard way. — Bohemian ♦ Feb 18 at 5:09
I .. what ... why ...
... Okay, I want to stop now.
The more I read, the more disappointed I am by the entirety of SO.

@FEichinger Now you know why i avoid meta like the plague ;]
I still can't believe that he got more votes than @Undo.

15 years since the Melissa worm, anyone older than @Simon probably still remembers how fun that was :)

6:52 AM
Maybe any of you can help me with this
I am looking for a report that states the cost-per-incident in a normal enterprise. But it will be much better if you have the cost-per-incident per enterprise per market
(security incident)
For example, what is the cost of finding a virus in a PC of an enterprise? (if any)
found it =)
If anyone is interested:
I would love to have more of them if you have any

@kiBytes Good luck with that. Not a single report is ever reported without an agenda. Usually the intention is to show that security breaches are EXPENSIVE cause we sell the solution
@kiBytes totally coincidentally produced by PWC

@tylerl This PWC is quite good it really gives an estimation =)

@kiBytes Plus, if you are looking for a solution, PWC is more than happy to sell it to you

Nevertheless I will have to read it first but it looks fine =)
I just need to pull some data together

@kiBytes It's a bit like KPMG releasing a report on how costly it is to do your own taxes

7:04 AM
@tylerl Consultancy companies are always to raise the costs a bit, of that I am sure
but that doesn't really mean that they clearly manipulate the data "a lot" (sorry, I believe this phrase doesn't sound very good in English)
But these companies have a good amount of clients and they can get some good statistics as well
What I didn't expected is the report to be free
Normally you have to buy them.

@TerryChia leave it to a techy to point that out ;op

Q: What is disintermediation in database seciruty?

MinAWhat is disintermediation means and what kind of security?

What's up with that?

@Adnan sounds like a homework question to me

@RоryMcCune and I agree, but I never heard of the term in the proposed context.

@Adnan VTC: WTF as you saying?

@tylerl I'm not asking for opinions on what to do with the question on Sec.SE.

@Adnan You misunderstood.

8:17 AM
@Adnan not giving advice.

Ahhh..
@RоryMcCune @TerryChia @tylerl Does any of you smartasses know how that term relates to InfoSec?
The dude must have read it in a book in school

@Adnan Not a clue.

@TerryChia Exactly, me neither.
@ChakDeIndia Ha?

@Adnan disintermediation would mean "removing an intemediate", which in general is desirable in security if the intermediate is a 3rd party
On the other hand, removing a firewall could be considered "disintermediation"
I think it's a translate fail

@tylerl Dude... I looked the term up.
How does that related to database security?
What 3rd party?

8:19 AM
@Adnan who the hell knows.
i'm talking in the abstract
why would there be in intermediate party in database access?
that sounds silly
hence: translate fail

@tylerl Database-as-a-Service? ;)

@TerryChia or maybe "mysql-proxy as a service"

@tylerl Calvin Albert called.

@Adnan and?
did he leave a message?

@tylerl He just says hi.

8:22 AM
he was supposed to be leaving me some artwork.
aw well

@tylerl The message was too abstract for me to get it. He said you'll get it anyway.

so dis-intermediation in database security could refer to a situation where the application is handling access control restrictions on behalf of the database (i.e. like the way most web-apps do it with a pool of generic users who access the database). if you dis-intermediate, you have the database do the access control itself
theoretically could be more secure, but a pain in the ass to manage
so if you think about it, if each app user has a unique db account with just a permissions profile defined to only allow access to data they should be able to see, things like SQLi may be much less of a problem

@RоryMcCune Ooooh.. so it could be what @deed02392 was talking about yesterday.

@Adnan ahh was he, must've missed that...
not saying that is what OP was talking about
but could be

@RоryMcCune Waaait! You talked about it as well!

8:26 AM
@Adnan did I... lord I'm getting old , when was that?
4

@RоryMcCune there there pops

@Adnan ahh that was generically about DB permissions, but yeah if you had a bunch of users (unlike the one user profile thata data.SE probably uses) that would be it.
@LucasKauffman hey consultant-boy, do you not have a report to write :op

@RоryMcCune as a matter of fact, yes :(

8:31 AM
D:

@LucasKauffman where's that from?

@LucasKauffman yeah... I meant the circumstances under which it was recorded

@tylerl I have no idea

Woah, it's been a while since I compiled actionscript...

What I find offensive is this inane digging into users' personal information, the source of his name, his family tree.... Enough already. Not everyone in the entire world has names that conform to your culture or expectations. If he claims it's his real name, have a little bit of trust here. And even if it's not - so what? He didn't call you a bad name. If he called himself @SomeRandomShmuck, how is that possibly offensive? This is the Internet. If you can't stand someone calling himself a vaguely "bad" word, I have some bad news for you about this Internet-thing.... — AviD 2 mins ago

@AviD Are you ready for the incoming anal-probing from the meta crowd?

@TerryChia heh. I posted here because I assume it will be deleted as soon as the sun comes up on NYC.
I basically called an esteemed moderator "offensive".

@AviD Isn't that a job requirement?

Actually, what I didnt say, was that what I find offensive, is the fact that he IS a moderator.
@TerryChia Please. You could be completely absent, like @Jefff.

@AviD Being completely absent does not make @JeffF unoffensive.

10:21 AM
@RоryMcCune @LucasKauffman cyberreport.
@Iszi you should check this out: designthroughstorytelling.net/periodic/index.html
it's like tvtropes, just visual and scientific!

@Cyber-Rory What happened?!
It's like we don't know you anymore

@AviD To be fair, SE staff seem to disagree with that viewpoint, what with the Careers integration in the new profile.

@FEichinger well, that's coming from a different direction. It's not like they are trying to turn it into real-names-only like facebook...

@AviD I hate "slippery slope" as an argument, but in recent times it sure does apply to SE sometimes.
@AviD "esteemed" seems like a stretch. Recently elected and has a string of poor MSO contributions ...

@FEichinger see, that's where the difference is - SEI see all moderators as "esteemed". Even @Jefff.
and from their perspective, it makes sense.
goddamn it! I tried opening adding a lotus .ics to my outlook yesterday. Big mistake.
cant clean out my profile enough, it keeps making it crash.
damn lotus!

10:38 AM
Hey @Adnan - I've gone Cyber for the day. In honour of ... Cyber!

cyberhonour.

@AviD - I'd blame outlook. Notes rocks.

@Cyber-Rory Notes sucks!!
they have problems with it to, but.... corporate.

Well, yes, it sucks, but not as much as outlook

especially anything around timezones and DST.

10:39 AM
@AviD So does your face.

@Cyber-Rory Oh, only one day.. good.

dunno, my outlook has been rock solid till this mistake.
then again, I dont have it connected to exchange....
@Adnan cyberday.

Cyberhonour day

cyber sucks!
yes, yes I am cranky. Because Notes.
Still, not as bad as Lotus Domino.

(Hugs)

10:42 AM
oh yay! it didnt crash!

(Cyber hugs)

I guess all I needed to do was whinge about it.
Should have started whinging sooner.

@Adnan - shows how bad I am at starting trends. Nobody else cybered their usernames :-(

@Cyber-Rory I'm worried about renaming it back

10:52 AM
... I'm sure it will just work...won't it?
Maybe there was a time limitation on it. Maybe it was a couple of days. Can't remember now

@Cyber-Rory I'd have to wait some time (30 days, I think) to change the name again.
One way to get a round the time limitation is to use "Save And Copy Profile To All Stack Exchange Accounts". Sadly, I cannot use that. I have unique "about me" section for each of my accounts.

@TildalWave haha, excellent.

@Cyber-Rory facepalm apocalypse!

Q: Why do some tuned cars have very inclined tires?

robysottiniI've seen photographs of cars with strange inclined tires like the one in the picture I pasted here. They seems to be Japanese cars. Is it for drifting? Maybe for appearance? Do the tires get injuries?

Why do people do that?
The top picture, I mean

what's the occasion for the cyber prefix then?

10:59 AM
@TildalWave cyberfacepalm cyberpocalypse.

@Tildal - @AviD's cyberrant

@Cyber-Rory actually it was @LucasKauffman. I just responded to him.

ah well that's his problem, he could've known better than to poke Lotus

but completely agree with him.
@TildalWave what? no that was something else.
the lotus is unrelated.

@AviD man, who you're related to is your business

11:25 AM
oh, don't I wish.

/says hi
I'm in an airport! With wifi! And port 22! bows to port 22

@ManishEarth Whoa! Never been to an airport that had a paid WiFi where anything but DNS worked (before paying).

This is free wifi
There is faster paid wifi though

@ManishEarth Ummm.. then what's so special?

It's captive portal'd, but that just wants your phone number (which it verifies, and then gives you a day's worth of Net as long as you don't close the tab)

11:31 AM
Never been to an airport that had a free WiFi that filtered port 22.

You can only run one device per phone number
@Adnan I have. A lot of them just use a mangled version of squid/redsocks

@ManishEarth Interesting interesting...
@ManishEarth HTTP over SSH over DNS? :D
I love my DNS tunnel

@Adnan ow
Also, I probably would overload the server if I DNS tunneled :o

@Adnan who is @Denise, and why are you talking about her love tunnel?
5

@ManishEarth No no, it's actually pretty neat. Never paid for airport WiFi ever sense setting it up.
@ManishEarth Especially in Turkish airports (no free WiFi)!!

11:35 AM
wheee

What's up with Turkish airports, by the way? Assoles!

@Adnan ahh, Turkish. So it was Dennis, not Denise.

gimmetehdocs!

@Adnan baaad timing on that expletive there.

11:35 AM
@AviD Plot twist: It was Dennis, now Denise

@AviD What @Manish said

how is that better??

@AviD Nothing wrong with that

@Adnan those are some straaaaange fetishes you have.
2

meh, I'll learn to read one of these days ...

11:40 AM
This chat has become weird again in the 10mins I was gone.

@TerryChia You're the one who keeps the sanity here, man.

@Adnan Really?

that's a scary thought.

WTF Fact Of The Day: GNOME shell extensions are written in Javascript and CSS.

@TerryChia Duuuuude..
It's been like that for ages
Ever since the first days of GNOME 3

11:44 AM
@Adnan I don't write or use extensions generally. :P I just came across it on HN.
And it's still a WTF.

@TerryChia Understandable. I found it actually quite useful. I especially liked the one that hides the Bluetooth symbol

@TerryChia Sadly, JS and CSS has been one of the standards for UI extensions for a while.
The other big one being XML Java Hooks.

12:00 PM
I hate rebooting... Why do I need to reboot before uninstalling Visual Studio?! WHY?!

afternoon gents

To complete the uninstallation installers installation obviously
Afternoon

12:35 PM
aaand.. done rebooting.
wow
35 minutes!
@LucasKauffman Afternoon, love.

12:53 PM
@Adnan Forcing you to reboot after uninstalling Visual Studio is no more logical.
In fact it makes very little sense to force a reboot at any point before or after installing or uninstalling any non-system application. Unless (gods forbid !) the OS has been written by a herd of schizoid baboons, of course.

@ThomasPornin After using Windows for a while, I'm now convinced that installing anything leads to overwriting the Windows kernel.

1:23 PM
Could be it's because it changes from default debugger (dr. Watson) to VS?

םh crap crap crap CRAP CRAP CRAP sh*t sh*t sh*t sh*t SH*T SH*T SH*T SH*T SH*T SH*T SH*T SH*T SH*T SH*TSH*TSH*TSH*T

what?

just got a nasty letter.... getting called up for army reserves duty.
@TerryChia - this is what the rest of your life will look like.

hehehe nice one

NO IT'S NOT

1:26 PM
those 30 year old rations cans won't eat themselves you know?

I should be so lucky to get old rations.

why? what's brewing? I thought that place is peaceful and tranquil?
... for the last few weeks or something
@AviD can you say from the letter what's it about?

ah, nah, its nothing - just regular semi-yearly training.
I've managed to avoid the previous few....

what squad are you in?

second?
I dunno, what do you mean?
I actually dont belong to any squad, I was removed a while back. Something about bugging all the officers with my expectation of "logic", or something like that.
Last time I was there, I was in unit support.
Well, kind of support for the support unit.
Well, more just kinda keeping them company.

1:35 PM
@AviD infantry, artillery, air forces, marines, cyber warfare? :D

But they have since even given away that job, so I am officially just a warm body.
@TildalWave ahh, thats not "squad"... Artillery.

Oh... you might like this:

the big guns. the VERY big guns. ;-)
@TildalWave I dont get it?

@AviD squad, outfit, force, whatever ... use the fork luke, use the fork!

heh. I didnt do the training to use the fork. And I wouldnt want to mess up, those things are heavy.

1:37 PM
@AviD they always say those "5 in 1", "10 in 1" ... and they all taste exactly the same so they could as well reverse that and say "1 in 10" :)

actually I'm not in the big guns anymore, I guess you could say that it IS "cyber-artillery" ;-)
@TildalWave yeah, from my experience, if it is completely flavorless, you got off lucky.

@AviD that's what happens if you consume too many Java beans

oh, I know better than to eat the beans from those rations.

@AviD But still with TVTropes links - so pretty much equally as time-sucking.

@Iszi just cooler.

1:41 PM
@AviD That sounds like the best kind of military service to me.

@Xander just pointless.
if I'm gonna be put out of hearth and home, away from family and work, with no internet, it should at least be for a good reason.

@AviD So is drill, and hospital corners on your rack every day. At least this is easy pointless.
@AviD That's true.

as it is, since I'm just "officially" laying around with no responsiblities, I'm the one they would tap for any busy work. Kitchen, gardening, cleaning, rocks arrangement.... I'd wind up working the hardest.
@Xander weelll..... yeah. but in principle, the training is to prepare for war. for when the bad guys come to shoot us, we can blow them up faster.
and they get to play wargames.

@AviD I get that, but my position is that in most cases, the principle != practical results. Wargames are fun though. I grant you that.

@Xander meh. I really dont enjoy them, at least not anymore.
might have to do with the hearth/home/family/work/internet thing.
or the mud. definitely might have to do with sleeping in the mud.

1:47 PM
@AviD Yeah, that makes sense.
@AviD Ha ha.

illegible AND incomprehensible? methinks that @ScottPack was involved.

> A French consumer group is taking action over the three companies' [Twitter, Facebook, Google] refusal to alter their terms and conditions on privacy - including sending French users to documents in English.

too much of a coincidence.

@AviD Isn't that one of the criteria of a terms and conditions, to be incomprehensible

1:54 PM
@AviD hehe yeah that's quite funny
I thought French IS illegible AND incomprehensible?
3

also who actually reads the terms and conditions

@LucasKauffman they gave me access, that makes it their problem not mine
learning French

@TildalWave In fact the French text is "inaccessibles, illisibles" which should be translated as "inaccessible and unreadable".

@ThomasPornin I'm not sure that makes more sense :)

2:40 PM
Some belgians are brilliant... mirror.co.uk/news/weird-news/…

@AviD Too bad @Lucas isn't one of them

@Adnan harsh

@AviD - wouldn't work for me. I don't know a single character name - I'd obviously end up getting a kicking from my classmates for continuing to be too loud

2:59 PM
@Cyber-Rory easy fix for you, here's 9 minutes summarizing the first 3 series :)

heh - won't play on this device

@Cyber-Rory aww what I concluded from it, is that there's a lot of characters who die a lot + dragons + zombies + giants
@Cyber-Rory started on my quest through the 101 Whiskys to try before you die.. bought some monkey shoulder

@RоryMcCune Pfft. They call those "giants"? I'm playing God of War these days.

well they'd be pushed to put in giants on that scale I reckon, from what little I've seen of god of war....

3:22 PM
@RоryMcCune and boobies which is why we're all still watching it
2

@TildalWave oh yeah they mention that..

@RоryMcCune *those

@TildalWave unless my use of "that" referred to the reason rather than the boobies ;op

@RоryMcCune when I see a pair(s) of boobies I have at least (power of) two more reasons to watch it, unless it's a sci-fi flick in which case I might practice powers of three ... either case, it's plural :P

@TildalWave especially if you've been watching total recall again..

3:28 PM
ah yes, that's the one :)

3:54 PM
Any of you guys have short/medium-term investments? (CDs, funds,etc.)

well, they might be the reason to start watching, Rory
@Adnan - nope...kids

@Adnan Yeps, me
I have some euros in a peer to peer money lending system

@RoryAlsop Hmmm.. I thought kids are a good reason for investments (you know, something for them to start their lives in their mid 20s and whatnot)

around 11% revenue each year, but I don't have a lot of money into that (around 2k)

@kiBytes That doesn't sound bad at all. Much better than my shitty 1.25% savings account.

3:59 PM
@Adnan It has some drawbacks

@kiBytes Oho! Like what?

Like, you can't take out your money whenever you want, you have to wait until the loan is end
