@FreeMan One moves, the other probably moves with giving you the immediate next option to rename. At least, that's what I'd expect.
I think it comes from mv, which can move but also move/rename at the same time.
Oddly enough even mv has versioning.
mv myfiles myfiles2
If myfiles is a file or directory, and myfiles2 is a directory, move myfiles into myfiles2. If myfiles2 does not exist, the file or directory myfiles is renamed myfiles2.

no, it seems and rename lets you rename the directory on the fly. weird, but OK. I can see value in that

@MathieuGuindon oRange is the new black

^ good one

@SimonForsberg there's no way to make it early-bound? :(

I need to simply WinOS level move \.git to Source\.git, right?

5:05 PM
(As Object -> late-bound, no compiler assistance, nightmares ensue)

@SimonForsberg If you go that route, you might as well write VBA in Python.

@mansellan an oRange is a bad omen. if there's an oRange somewhere, someone's going to die in the next scene - classic.

@MathieuGuindon I thought that was a redShirt that was guaranteed to die in the next scene

Q: Were oranges an intentional use of symbolism by filmmakers?

steelersquirrelThere is a lot of speculation surrounding the potential symbolism of oranges in The Godfather. The primary interpretation being that whenever an orange is shown, there is impending doom on either the person handling the orange or an orange being shown in the scene: Sal grabbing an orange at Con...

@MathieuGuindon So, they passed more than horses' head?
Odd movie.

5:08 PM
confession: I never saw it

@MathieuGuindon sometimes it's just an orange.

sometimes, it's just a range

but if the orange is Object, how do we know it's an orange?

@MathieuGuindon you're not alone

5:11 PM
Am I missing something? (he asks somewhat rhetorically)
becomes

Yeah, not the best ux but that's correct
(in the .oasis file, \Source is what is saved.)

ok. yeah. I see that now in your example...
Yeah, there are a few weirdities in the UX...

@MathieuGuindon VBA is criminal :)

@SimonForsberg prove it
#NotGuilty

5:18 PM
Anything can be proven with enough Photoshop.

I can't open those links in the open office floor, LOL.

see, that's also why Open Office is bad

I know.
I was counting on spending most of my time at client sites.

pun -> failed

And I was under the impression we could WFH waiting for clients.
@MathieuGuindon LOL, I did see it.

5:25 PM
When I go to check in now, Tortoise shows Source/Forms/*, etc as "Modified", Forms/* as "Deleted" and it also shows Forms/* as "Not Versioned Files". why is that 3rd set there?

it's how the tortoise swings
move & rename are kind like delete & new

great. Can't swing a dead tortoise without running into unversioned files 'round here... :/

@Hosch250 wait, you have to be in the office whil on the bench? That seems... strange.

@FreeMan now, now, where else can you find good food that comes with its own serving bowl?!?

Yeah.
Not quite how they advertised the position to me.

5:31 PM
I guess they have some trust issues

Yeah...
They said they had people just sleeping on the clock.

eesh

@this any Chinese restaurant. Oh...

I'd never abuse wfh like that, ruins it for everyone

You know, IMO, they should just fire someone like that...

5:32 PM
^

What really sucks for me is my other company offered me 100% WFH, and they just had an architect position open.

sadly, Corps tend to overreact and ruin it for everyone instead of just taking care of the direct issue...

They'd have put me in that position in a flash.

give 'em a call back? :D

Well, not 8 days into the job :D

5:34 PM
so... within the 2 week refund period then ;-)
j/k

The World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) is an international non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with hemophilia (also spelled haemophilia) and other genetic bleeding disorders. ?

lol acronyms are fun.

LOL.

just in case - work from home

@mansellan initialism***

5:36 PM
@mansellan lots of love?

lick old lemons

@Cyril huh, #TIL

a few organizations ago we had branding training... learned all about acronyms, initialisms, article representation, etc. It's the little things that you remember because the fact that someone will pay a person $200k to talk about that to 30 people is outrageous
that's also where i got laughed at because i told someone to check the google
i then became the example for article representation

so... what about TIL? never heard it spoken, I guess it could go either way (but i'd be inclined to go with T-I-L)

not sure, tbh... i say "today i learned" when i see it because i'm familiar. the assumption would be an initial pronunciation (acronym), then giving up and using the initialism.

based on me trying to figure out "fwiw" every time i see it

5:43 PM
@mansellan personally I'd hope they say "today I learned"

"the fuck is 'fwiw'? you know, eff double ewe eye double ewe... what is that supposed to mean?"

but unfortunately I know that there are young'uns who literally say "L.O.L."

i type out "elle oh elle" when i am being sarcastic or someone has made a terrible joke/pun

Verbally saying "LOL" is basically like saying "That's mildly amusing, but not funny enough to actually laugh."

@Hosch250 you could be like mandy moore's character in that episode of scrubs that says "that is so funny" instead of ever actually laughing

5:45 PM
@Cyril for what[ever] it's worth

@MathieuGuindon i'm very hopeful that using and typing out my confusion will lead to me remembering that in the future
@MathieuGuindon now i'm thinking of stupid subreddits with initialisms/acronyms: r/MFPMPPJWFA
"Music French people might play at a party or just with friends around"

lolwtf

there's another one like itiwabbitoiag... i thought it was a boy but turns out it's a girl, with pictured of people from back and front
and the reverse about girls/guys
@MathieuGuindon lick old lemons with thorough ferocity

@Cyril takes more effort to type the initialism than the actual thing!

5:56 PM
say what?
there is no Forms/ directory...

hidden?

nope - I've got "view hidden files" turned on. (First thing I do on any update/reinstall - don't hide crap from me!)
and this shows that the only 2 "tables" that are in my Source/Tables directory (and I'm looking at the Win Explorer window right now and they are there) have been 'deleted'??
the cmd line is claiming that everything in Source/Forms, Source/Queries, etc is deleted.
when I do a git status
I dunno why...
my command line is in my same FileReorg branch that TortoiseGit was in when I moved them.
tortoise is showing them missing as well...
but Windoze shows them there.

purely for checking, have did you ensure that the upper file's view was inhereted to ensure viewing hidden? have you restarted bash to ensure you're not holding onto a legacy or something uploaded to the system?

@Cyril my standard WinExp "Folder Options":
been set that way since this machine was dropped on my desk.

i hear you; just have to be re-ensure

6:05 PM
haven't restarted the bash session, but the tortoisegit gui is showing the exact same thing...
I'm gonna git checkout -- Forms/* from the cmd line to see if that'll fix it.
ugh...

you're having a hell of a minute with these, @FreeMan
going on 24 hours with this issue?

yeah. I noticed... :/
no, just about 2 is all...

oh, i thought this was the same you were working on with This last night
not that it's a comparison thing, but i'm dealing with some stupid stuffs, as well... for some reason my excel keeps turning off calculations and i cannot figure why

no, that's the ongoing "how do I log into the SQL Server running on a non-standard port" issue. I've still had zero response from our help desk on that one, too.

ahh

6:13 PM
in both instances, my forehead is getting a bit sore...

move the head target onto a cushion; it tends to help
or take Cliff's advice and drink beer so you're smarter by killing off all the straggler brain cells... natural selection, so to speak. once you're smarter, i'm sure it will be fixable
(cliff from cheers... not sure how many folks remember that show on here, particularly as we're on both sides of the pond)

~confused~ for a sec. I read "head target" and thought it was a git head reference, then wondered what the heck a "cushion" was - I mean, I've heard of a "stash", but a "cushion"?

haha

btw, did you use the configure tool to set up the DB for the non-standard port?

6:17 PM
is that refering to Source/Forms/DataMove.def or to Forms/DataMove.def. 'cause the 1st is where they are now the 2nd is where they were...
@Cyril no -I had nothing to do with setting up the server. Or do you mean something in SSMS when attempting to connect to said server?

should be user@machine MINGW64 /h/git/ROIReport/Source/Forms/Master.def
@FreeMan was referring to setting up the server, not latter connection

ok, I'm seriously confused, then - the last screenshot I posted showed where I checked them in to /h/git/ROIReport/Source/Forms/DataMove.def and now it says they're deleted???
do i need to git add /Forms/*?

going to refer to @this for that... i have to look at my cheat sheet to use bash commands (print out beside my monitor at home)

@Cyril yeah... I'm nowhere near DBA-ey enough to be involved in setting up a server, especially on a non-standard port. But thanks for askin'!
OK, git add Forms/ added all the files from Forms/ -which makes sense except that there is NO Forms/ directory!!!
and it's still showing:

I used to have project/Forms. I moved Forms to project/Source/Forms (using Tortoise's move with git context menu option).

so you're the problem

6:30 PM
my .git directory used to live in project, but I moved it to project/Source after I moved Forms to Source/...
so .git thinks that the relative path is Source/Forms/* when the relative path is actually just Forms/* and that is why it's screaming at me
right?

sounds abotu right; cd /source and see the new directory

yeah... I'll bet that if I move .git back up one directory level, it'll say everything's OK.
but, I don't really wanna do that.
so now I have to semi-manually move everything so .git knows where to find it.
OK, this makes more sense...

i believe you would need to re set-up the project to support new directories; e.g., start a new project

don't think so:

I think I just did things in the wrong order.

got'cha

6:34 PM
If I'd moved .git first, I'd have probably been OK.
(but, if I'd moved .git first, would Tortoise have known that I was in a tracked directory to have provided the context menu options?)
dunno - enough to make my head spin at the moment...
:/

having never heard of tortoise until yesterday, that part i could not help with

tortoise works w/ .git it's only a UI over git
can't be more helpful; dealing w/ a fire

Updating an iPhone from 10.0 to 12.4....
Working on testing a PWA.
Apparently 10.0 doesn't really support the offline feature.
So, update time!
Snow stopped finally. Hopefully the freeway plows are out.

6:59 PM
A Range is a full-fledged object, it's much more than just an address made up of a row and a column. I've no idea what the question is (term confusion?), but if you have a Range object referring to A1 and you want the cell in B1, then {that-range-object}.Offset(ColumnOffset:=1) will give you a Range referring to B1. — Mathieu Guindon 1 hour ago
Interesting, didn't know that.

Wheee!
So, the iPhone was 100% drained when I got it.
I charged it for about 30 minutes before it would let me in.
Then I got in, left it charging, and ran the webpage I'm testing.
Then I started the update. Now it drained faster than it's charging or something.
So it's plugged in, asking me to plug it in, and trying to update itself :D
> As of today, we’re running it back. We’re changing the reputation earned from getting a question upvote to ten points, making it equal to the reputation earned from an upvote to an answer.

We’re recalculating reputation for every Stack Overflow and Stack Exchange individual based on this change. Every question upvote earned in the past will earn a value of ten reputation points retroactively.
Ummm?
Good news or not?

Oh bloody hell, they went ahead with that?

Yes.
On the bright side, I wonder if it'll bump me to 20k rep on CR?
Probably not, but I'll probably get a few hundred more.

What happened to optimizing for pearls...
I have more rep on MSE now, but CR is either not recalced yet or something something caching.

@this hey! My fire is much more important than your fire!!!! </SelfEntitlement>

7:12 PM
Yeah, it seems to be going site by site.
Did you get an alert about the new rep?

Yes, just now. 10 minutes after the rep changed on MSE, I think, it gave me an alert for it. Or, well, not an alert, a mention I went over 2k and can now insta-edit.

Oh, a privilege notice, not a rep notice.

@Hosch250 Yea, you don't get rep notices for the recalc since it's retroactive.
It's not like you get new rep, the system will presume you've always had this rep.

Yeah.

I've read the blog post and the mod Teams announcement about it a few weeks ago, and I still don't know whether this applies to SO or all of SE.

7:16 PM
Just curious if I'd get an alert when it happens.
@MathieuGuindon All SE.

got +/- 0 so far

> We’re recalculating reputation for every Stack Overflow and Stack Exchange individual based on this change.

@Hosch250 in that case I'll be getting something like +9K on CR

IKR?

more or less, depending on how retroactive rep-caps apply

7:17 PM
@Hosch250 For some reason my rep went down; i went to check my stats and all of my upvotes now say "5" lol

@Cyril That was the old style.

@MathieuGuindon That's probably going to be tricky. But if you rep-capped, you won't get bonus rep for those days I guess.

They'll be going up to 10 when the script finishes.

I'm expecting 1-2k or so, might just hit 10k today.
Which admittedly would be nice.

I might hit 20k, actually. I'm just 2.2k away.
That'd be awesome, to get delete privs back.

7:19 PM
@Hosch250 well, for getting an upvote and being the answer was 25 points: 10 for upvote and 15 for answer. not sure what happened on my part that all of those 10 points now show up as 5

@Cyril Answers are 10, questions are 5.

might be a hiccup while the script goes

Might be.
But, just double-check that it's a question, not an answer, before you take it to meta :)

The suspense, it's killing.

7:45 PM
I have a radical idea.
Suppose after getting to level 25k rep, you "lose" all rep.
You just become a "trusted user".

Then what?
How about bounties?

My first question is whether bounties even work that great or are being used correctly.
They could do a "featured" thing without bounties.
The other alternative, each trusted user gets a rate limit on bounties that can go up as they use them correctly.
So, you could create a certain number of bounties each week or month for a set amount of rep.
So, it's not taking from their rep anymore, just generating it for non-trusted users.
Because, seriously, once you have 25k, it's meaningless anyway.

Ok, and how would <20k users 'bounty' their question?

They'd use the same system.

With rate limits instead of rep?

7:51 PM
It would have to be enabled at a privilege level.
But then it would unlock either the new featured/bounty system for them.
Like I said, it's a radical idea.
But, it might help solve some problems.

But that would take people using things correctly... "i'ma put a bounty on this as i won't have another question this week", etc.

Yea.

my first thought is typically to the "how will they abuse it" thing

People expecting to behave, is, like, no good.

i guess the expectation of a person with that much reputation is that they've been there long enough to know better... but if people get the privilege at like... 2k rep, that might be a little wonky

7:56 PM
I'd think 10k would be fair enough.

that's about a couple years of using a site... never thought about this, but could someone else bounty your question?

Yes.
Even gets you a badge.
Altruist.
> First bounty you manually award on another person's question.
Got mine 4 years ago or so.
Not enough people have it.
Share some love, people.

8:26 PM
I'm at 21k rep on CR.

my rep hasn't changed anywhere that I can tell (no green "+n" notifications?), but I've been getting yearling badges on sites I haven't been in ages

@Cyril Couple months if you're in college between semesters.
@MathieuGuindon You don't get +N notifications.

but the total rep does visibly change, no?

Yes.
I was at 17.8k before it started.

you weren't a trusted user before the recalc?

8:31 PM
No.

congrats!

I kind of stopped at 16k shortly after the site graduated, and earned 1k over the next couple years.
Thanks.
Mast is still at 8k last I checked.

I suppose my 160 questions take a bit longer to recalc

You are at 62k.

have been for a while :)

8:33 PM
I wouldn't be surprised if the script was paginated and parallelized, and I just got caught early in one of the pages.

and 54K on SO
with 73 questions there

@Hosch250 it's taken me about 5 years to get to almost 5k points

@Cyril it's the first 10K that's hard to get
hm, I got an upvote but no nofitication for it. I think the script might be running and they shut off rep notifs while it runs

now that i'm actually looking at my profile activity, i really wish they'd fix thsoe "top per cent this year/quarter/week" things... normalize for accounts that aren't active or something. my top 2% is actually top 57% of active users

@Cyril I found answering about 3-5 questions a day would settle down at about 160-200 rep.

8:38 PM
huh how do you know that?
I wonder what my "top 0.11% this year" actually stands for :)

@Hosch250 Still waiting on mine.

i went to the last page of the list and people with some numbers who have 0 points this year. jumped a couple hundred pages forward and found a 5 point person and used that number as the denominator

ha, just got +10 from SO Teams ...looks like they forgot to shut off some notifications

@MathieuGuindon It's not doing all sites at the same time. So...
I just posted in the wrong room, but I'm tracking progress by Yearling badges.
in The 2nd Monitor, 4 mins ago, by Mast
HWRecs was over 2 hours ago, Space 50 minutes ago, Mythology 19 minutes ago.

lol, I just got 2 yearling badges on SU

8:55 PM
heh... just got on Travel.se

9:09 PM
@Mast is at 11k now.

what
is
my
network
rep
now
still 62.9K on CR
that script is going to run all night lol

My rep on Aviation just went from ~8.4k to 13k!
I wouldn't know any of the other scores without having taking a screen shot to start with.
Don't really care
Since I'm not buying any internet unicorns anytime soon
<-- total went from ~12.5k to 25k, though!

woot! welcome to moderator tools!

oooohhhh... shiny!

@MathieuGuindon That's per site, right? Not network-wide?

9:16 PM
@Hosch250 Thanks
Went up by about 3k.

sooo, Federal Reserve is now involved in Stack Overflow?

Not how I envisioned this, but hey.

@Hosch250 yes

@this Yes, next week they'll start raising the reputation privilege milestones due to massive inflation.

9:18 PM
Gentleman, start up your reputation printers
One for me, two for you

TBH I don't see a problem with making question votes +10. The problem isn't the amount of rep an upvote gets, the problem is people upvoting shitty posts.

Yup
Stop upvoting crap.

oh, it's on GD.SE now

GD?

Graphic Design

9:21 PM
graphic design?
jinx

to be fair it could have been Greek Deity yeah

TTGH have fun rep watchin'!

Silver inflation.

you're growing old quite fast, @Mast
2

Lmao

9:31 PM
@IvenBach Can you teach me something?

that's a rather broad request
answer's probably 'yes'

not sure you meant juggling though, better clarify ;-)

I'm trying to convert a range of Excel values to string[,]

9:33 PM
Yup

so you're looking at object[,]

And Visual Studio is telling me the same parameter is both object and object [,]
    private static string[,] Convert2DVariantArrayTo2DStringArray(dynamic _2DVariantArray)
    {
        var uBound0 = _2DVariantArray.GetLowerBound(0);
        var uBound1 = _2DVariantArray.GetLowerBound(1);
        MessageBox.Show((_2DVariantArray is object).ToString());
        MessageBox.Show((_2DVariantArray is object[,]).ToString());
        MessageBox.Show(_2DVariantArray.GetLowerBound(0).ToString());
        MessageBox.Show(_2DVariantArray.GetLowerBound(1).ToString());
        MessageBox.Show(uBound0.ToString());
That returns True, True, 1, 1, 1, and 1, respectively.

your VBA is showing lol try Debug.WriteLine instead of popping messageboxes

Even though when I hover on _2DVariantArray, it says:

1
A: How to convert a 2D object array to a 2D string array in C#?

A Bittersweet LifeIs this what you are looking for? string[,] prop; //This is a 2D string List<List<string>> mysteryList; if (value is object[,]) { object[,] objArray = (object[,])value; // Get upper bounds for the array int bound0 = objArray.G...

9:35 PM
object[1...49, 1...88]
So I'm going a little batty with a double true in there
Yup, already have that answer open, trying to implement it.
I don't understand how it can be both object and object array at the same time
and how, if it's only an object, it says [1...49, 1...88]
@MathieuGuindon Will do!

you'll find the Debug class in the System.Diagnostics namespace
also useful: Debug.Assert(bool-expression, message)

^ me trying to make excuses for why I'm not already using Debug xD
So what am I misunderstanding? How can something be both an object and object array at the same time?
And why, if it's object array, am I getting upper bounds of 1 when Visual Studio clearly understands in some format that they are actually 49 and 88?
@MathieuGuindon And yes, I called my variables uBound0 and uBound1 because I was already looking at that answer.

@puzzlepiece87 everything is an object in .NET
an object[,] is also an object

Oh >.<
So basically that check would return true for everything >.<

9:50 PM
also you don't want dynamic there

Got it, I'll change it to object[,]

in C# dynamic is.. uh, ....*viral*. it propagates like a cancer, and before you know it you're looking at C# code without type safety
dynamic foo = 42;
var bar = foo++; // bar is dynamic
the problem with that isn't var

Got it.
I've avoided using it so far because it cripples Intellisense.

when you get a dynamic from an API, try to (safely) cast it to a known interface ASAP, and use the known interface everywhere
@puzzlepiece87 exactly. it also cripples type safety: the compiler doesn't know what it's looking at anymore. a bit like VBA doesn't know what a Variant is
object also loses type safety
and when you're dealing with value types, object means boxing

I just double-checked: I had no other dynamics in my code.
I used to have some, but then I realized I could type classes of different types as an interface if they all implement it.
So now I have IFixReport activeFix = properties[i]; instead.

9:58 PM
I'd make that var activeFix = properties[i] as IFixReport;
or var activeFix = (IFixReport)properties[i];
(as IFixReport would make the activeFix reference null if the soft-cast failed)
(IFixReport)properties[i] would blow up with an InvalidCastException if the cast isn't valid

Perfect, thanks for that. Doing that now.
