Q: Spell My Username in the Following Code No. 2

Cheese CakeI have developed a code, this time purely a conversion from letters to numbers. I have put a table below with 3 words or phrases and their corresponding codes. Your job is to write my username in the code (a space is still a space in the code, and this is not case-sensitive). Word/Phrase Code...

@Sphinx "Digerati" sounds like it's a luxury brand of some sort

6:28 AM
probably something like "Our world-renowned perfume, Digerati Amethyst, with 50% grape extract. On sale for $500.00"

Q: Standing upright? It's time to slice fish!

EmmaCan someone explain why the answer is BRISTLING - many thanks!

@Sphinx I want to answer this but I am too dumb to do so idk the cryptic clue
+it got answered

7:05 AM
@Jafe hahahah
@Stevo slightly same. my issue is that i want to answer such a question but it gets answered quickly by someone else lol

@oAlt well, I guess im not the only one who tries to answer but is too slow

In any case, I didn't realize for some reason that "it's" was just a connector
@Stevo lol

ok I tried to edit that answer that was posted, but got rejected
how nice
that would be 1 more reputation to 1,600

@Stevo the one to the standing upright question?

@oAlt that would be it

7:11 AM
i see

though I quite understand why, I was about to write "could be rejected" in the edit summary
cause once again making something neater isn't very important

ye

welp im stuck 1 reputation behind 1.6k
and 401 reputation behind 2k.

7:34 AM
meanwhile my rep hasn't moved in a while... being busy and lacking creative juices at the moment
i still have a puzzle idea that i'm keeping, but i don't know how to develop it more

7:47 AM
Hmm, what could the previous C4 in the latest hint be

8:01 AM
@oAlt you see that's better than me I don't have any idea
and im really stuck below 2k rep
and being below 2k rep doesn't give you much freedom

2 hours later…
9:52 AM
getting above 2k won't fix the problem if you're getting edits rejected now
it just makes it harder for other people to see and fix the mistakes

uh fair
but like if you understand my predictament, under 2k reputation doesn't give you a lot of room to help moderate the site, which is what I do

yeah and that's by design, people get to moderate once they've shown they can be trusted with the tools

@Jafe ok tbh, having 85 edits approved and only like 15 rejected isn't THAT bad...
but then it could do some work
@Jafe ok, and the edit that got rejected there was kinda unhelpful in terms of changing anything but imho made that answer look less clunky and broke up the answer for the sake of viewing answer and then the reasoning.

Q: Guess a natural object

My CarThousands of lines, thousands of lines, can't be seen when dropped in the water, all things grow with me, all of them laugh in their hearts. (guess a natural object)

Ppl who have stayed far longer in the Lair compared to me, did anyone ever explain Deusovi's profile picture yet? I think I have a possible explanation but I'm checking to see if others already got it
(won't be surprised if anyone right now also knows the explanation though)

Digging a bit just gave me confirmation that there is a meaning:

@bobble yes!

2:31 PM
Hi; is this legal "tense" for a x-word clue? "Animal without a backbone, for example":"Spineless" - do I need the 'for example'? One Is a noun the other adjective?
need to somehow keep animal as first word ideally

2:45 PM
@bobble Could you delete your MTC suggestion now that it's past please? (Just doing some clean-up...) Thanks!

@bobble yeah

(And thanks for doing that so promptly!)

@Amoz "Animal without a backbone, for example" is the whole definition? Yes, you need the "for example" there
I don't know how the heck I misspelled "whole" as "when", but whatever lol
(For what it's worth, in contrast, if the def is just "without a backbone, for example" then ideally the "for example" should be dropped, since "without a backbone" is already "spineless")

thanks

3:04 PM
Even with "for example" I don't think it really works. "Without a backbone", yeah, but "Animal without a backbone", no. "Animal without a backbone, for example" could be def for JELLYFISH but not for SPINELESS.

Yes, the "for example" is not the problem; you don't need it. The mismatch between noun and adjective ist. If you must keep "animal" as first word, you could resort to a (clumsy) definition like: "Animal without a backbone is like this".

Q: Four superheroes involved in an operation

chandanr777 A superhero X from DC universe and a superhero Y from Marvel universe decided to join hands and stop a cybercriminal. They named this operation as 'Uncaged' as a codeword for 'Coding'. "I will select a superhero from my universe to assist me. You too select a superhero from your universe to assi...

I wanted to say something along those lines but I couldn't find the right words. But after reading the other feedback, I now have: if "Animal ... example" has to clue just "spineless", then "Animal" seems superfluous.
(which goes back to the whole thing abt "without a backbone" being a better fit)

Not just superfluous, incorrect. You must clue an adjective with an adjective. You can use an adjective that is another type of word in the surface reading, but the types and forms of the def and the answer.must match.

3:48 PM
It seems I still can't find the right words lol

words are hard

You were trying to be polite and therefore shied away from using harsh words such as "incorrect", as I did. Perhaps I come across as pedantic in my comment above, but I think that the "Animal without a backbone" construction is not allowed or at least shaky.

4:17 PM
There's some truth in your first statement lol. But yeah, I think I understand: adj perhaps = adj, good (because same part of speech), and noun perhaps = adj, bad (because not same part of speech, and the "perhaps" does not absolve it). (It makes sense, but for some reason it never crossed my mind before. So I hope I subconsciously followed that rule in every decent cryptic clue I've made... haha)

Don't worry, I'm not going to check. :)

Hahah

(I usually try not to be too pedantic, with varying success. If Amoz's clue is part of a larger speciality crossword where it is important that the clue should begin with "animal" and therfore "animal without backbone" clues SPINELESS, that's no skin off my nose.)

5:08 PM
@juicifer you're quoting my wife now...

Hi Stiv, thanks for your answer. Knowing the asker probably won't help but it's some kind of competiton on internet. They give hints and expect from people to find the answer. Any way that leads to the answer is accepted (searching, asking etc.). So, my question is not cheating :) — Efe yesterday
But we don't allow competitions just in general ...

5:41 PM
The current explicit policy is copied from what they have on math.SE: we forbid things from questions that are (1) originally published by some third party, with submissions invited somehow, (2) publicly available, and (3) time-limited. We don't know whether this one satisfies those conditions; I'm going to guess that #2 is probably violated and #3 might be too.
It may very well be that we would do better to forbid a wider range of contest-like things; see e.g. puzzling.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/7202/… where some person called bobble proposed dropping condition 3 and some other guy called Gareth McCaughan said "probably a good idea but I think we should probably go further than that" ... and then, er, we didn't take it any further. :-)

2 hours later…
7:32 PM
@GarethMcCaughan wonder why those people could be
I think bobble was perhaps afraid of being seen as the big mean out-of-touch/power-hungry (non-diamond) moderator

4 hours later…
11:06 PM
Well, I come back from sleep and see once again talking about people trying to cheat in competitions. Sigh

11:17 PM
better not check the chess news then :)

Well, I am a chess geek, kinda , and I already know the incident. Sigh
