Q: Strange Glyphs From Another Time

ExecutionByForkThe following glyphs were recently uncovered at a dig site, which have stumped cryptographers and linguists alike. These symbols are guessed to be some sort of ancient language, but nothing is yet known. Photos of these glyphs have been distributed to news sites, newspapers, and magazines in hope...

@Stiv freedom of speech ddef (sorta)?

@msh210 It's the right answer, but it's not a ddef. I'd argue there's a wordplay half (which I'd need to see explained) and a cdef...

@Stiv oh I see… rising anxiety about not attending = omof<
and let go of is the past participle, or whatever you call it
Which is much better than my first solution.

You're there. Can you express the wordplay in a single summary line?

Um… probably

(Just thinking for oAlt's benefit in a year's time...!)

11:31 AM
freed omof< speech = a matter of opinion

@msh210 That's the one :) Well done for finding it

Well, I had some help from the setter.

Equivalent of letters in the grid in an actual cryptic crossword... Nothing wrong with that :)

@msh210 no worries!
I wonder if anyone has spotted a pattern in some of my C4s?

wait you're not stiv :P

@juicifer good observation

@AncientSwordRage so I see NORTHUMBERLAND, BOURNEMOUTH CHRISTCHURCH AND POOLE, and TYNE AND WEAR recently
not sure if that's all there is to it or if that's even the pattern

The last seven clues in sequence are HANDRAILS, BOURNEMOUTH CHRISTCHURCH AND POOLE, KISSES, BEAT A HASTY RETREAT, MIRACULOUS, TYNE AND WEAR, and SHALOM...
I'm seeing a few body parts: nor[THUMB]erland, [HAND]rails, bourne[MOUTH]..., kisses, beat a hasty retreat, miraculous, tyne and w[EAR], s[HALO]m (for a saint, anyway!)
Certainly all the place name clues contain body parts

6:26 PM
I'm seeing kISSes and sHALOm but I'm not getting anywhere else with that
ah wait you also have MIRaculous

6:49 PM
Not all of my CCCCs fit the pattern and the pattern isn't limited to the answers...

7:22 PM
Are you saying that neither of these patterns is intended?
The body parts and the space stations?

I guess the pattern extends to the clues.
(Timestamps of the posts where the hands on a 12-hour clock must be read as semaphore, no doubt.)

Also, correction: It was BEAT A SPEEDY RETREAT (not 'hasty')

1 hour later…
8:31 PM
@Stiv neither
@juicifer that's part of it
Perhaps the second half is too loose to be a pattern and is more a theme

@AncientSwordRage Really?! That is a hefty coincidence then...!

9:02 PM
@Stiv it really is!
