Those long clues are often solved backwards from the def. That was the case for your clue when I saw "Law" and I expected it to be true for this one, too. You can probably question-mark the enumeration into onelook.com and get a useful response.
(Just tried that: You can, but "The Yellow Rose of Texas" beats the purple one of Cairo, beuase it has (2) entries, not just (1).)
Perhaps just "page missing from ..." would have been better, both clue- and surfacewise, but I like to be obscure at times. :)
Sorry to hear that. I thought once the overall answer was more or less known, the construction would be approachable. It was the first think that came to my mind to clue "purple rose". What was so difficult -- the awkward third-page construction?
It was working out that "third page of bombastic script's missing" was effectively a single unit. I was looking for the removal of MS from a word meaning 'bombastic' for a while, and scratching my head over whether ROSE was derived from some word like (-g)R(-andi)OSE. Once I rationalised that there was no way PURPLE was individually clued by anything here, it sprang out of the screen at me
I didn't really know how to clue "prose". I always think of prose as something written, but it is anything that isn't poetry, whether written or spoken. I thought "script" suited the film surface. I didn't really think about it as possible misdirection. (I always forget about MS as manuscript.)
