12:17 AM
@Stiv I got you

2 hours later…
2:30 AM
I don't really like the use of "nth X" to mean "nth letter of X" although it seems to be common now
Welp sent too early
There we go
"third page" wasn't "third letter of PAGE" there
it was "the third letter P" in another string
because p is an abbreviation for page

6:56 AM
@Stiv Yep.
Those long clues are often solved backwards from the def. That was the case for your clue when I saw "Law" and I expected it to be true for this one, too. You can probably question-mark the enumeration into onelook.com and get a useful response.
(Just tried that: You can, but "The Yellow Rose of Texas" beats the purple one of Cairo, beuase it has (2) entries, not just (1).)
Perhaps just "page missing from ..." would have been better, both clue- and surfacewise, but I like to be obscure at times. :)
7:30 AM
Well, it certainly made it non-trivial to solve - proper wracked my brains!
Sorry to hear that. I thought once the overall answer was more or less known, the construction would be approachable. It was the first think that came to my mind to clue "purple rose". What was so difficult -- the awkward third-page construction?
Oh, I wouldn't be sorry about it - it was great :)
Well, not "sorry" as in "I'll feel miserable the whole weekend", just "sorry that it wasn't so smooth". But thanks.
It was working out that "third page of bombastic script's missing" was effectively a single unit. I was looking for the removal of MS from a word meaning 'bombastic' for a while, and scratching my head over whether ROSE was derived from some word like (-g)R(-andi)OSE. Once I rationalised that there was no way PURPLE was individually clued by anything here, it sprang out of the screen at me
I didn't really know how to clue "prose". I always think of prose as something written, but it is anything that isn't poetry, whether written or spoken. I thought "script" suited the film surface. I didn't really think about it as possible misdirection. (I always forget about MS as manuscript.)
7:39 AM
The surface was great, told a story :)
Thanks again.
CCCC: All very 'anon' at this animated inn? (5,12)
I think this is fair, but would be interested to hear feedback.
hotel transylvania*?
although isn't animated used twice?
So therein lies my question - can 'inn' with a question mark sufficiently indicate an element of fiction?
Or is 'inn' sufficient as a definition in this case?
7:57 AM
can't see why not
just assumed the animated was meant to hint at it as well
Okay, cool - because I liked the surface including 'animated inn' without adding a second anagrind

I can't imagine anyone asking for soda/pop/soda pop in a restaurant 😳
