Hello

1:30 AM
Does anyone remember an MIT Mystery Hunt puzzle involving matchstick equation puzzles?

Are you thinking of Playing with Matches, from this year's Galactic Puzzle Hunt?

Oh that's it, thanks!

No problem!
(also hey Brandon)

@OmegaKrypton Sure. Should I reveal a letter or give an oblique hint about the structure of the clue?

Q: Especially Special

Rewan DemontayHere's a special and interesting chess problem that I came across the other day. It's White to move and checkmate Black in 7 moves. Source: Милошески, Бошко Mihajloski, Zlatko, Novi temi 1975 Comm. As usual, no using a computer and no Googling or anything like that for the solution. You mus...

JS1 I make bullions balloons billions (#5) These statues are wonderful! I'm investing in the sculptor. Move faster! I need to finish the 18th hole before noon. I'm moving as fast as I can! I need to work smarter, not harder. I'm not joking! You'd better not get in my way. ...

Q: 3D nonogram – What's going on?

jafeThis is a three-dimensional nonogram. The first six squares depict the layers of a $6\times6\times6$ cube. The final square gives the enumerations for the Z-axis, top to bottom. Some rules: The grid has five different colours: Red, blue, green, orange and purple. The black numbers can refer to ...

12:50 PM
@MOehm Is your pet spelled correctly?

I hope so. It's not a word that is complicated to spell.

well that rules out my pet aardvark theory

Well. I thought I was on to something with somehow ruining DALMATIAN to DAMNATI[la] and then setting a bit ON for DAMNATION which would make my blood pressure rise lol
But I can’t see any sane construction for that. If Dalmatian had been misspelled with -ion it might have worked.

That would be an indirect anagram, wouldn't it? You've got a good idea about setting a bit, but not the right thing to set it to.

setting a bit on could be O->I, no?

1:01 PM
That was my guess as well. Or could even literally be setting a bit on a letter to make, say, a B to a C

plenty of ways to make "ruined tail"... i have a feeling it's a different one than the last c4...
ah, that's pretty clever

That’s my best guess but I got nothing to actually apply it to

Keep it simple. No bit-masking of hex numbers.

Pity. (*jots note to self for follow up clue*)

hehehe

Q: A name of two parts

Andrew ZThere is no name for me in ancient texts, but my name now is a combination of my two parts. Avid readers may know me from a certain young adults novel as well.

1:18 PM
Ah! @MOehm The solution to your CCCC is DIGITALIS: DOG->DIG ("setting a bit on") + TAIL* + IS.

@GarethMcCaughan Yes, that's correct!

Though frankly everyone else should get the credit because I hadn't thought of doing O->I at all.

nice! never occurred to me to include the "is"

I'm not super confident abuot the bit-setting, especially because it probably doesn't really work surface-wise, but I tried to make a follow-up of Rubio's pet-with-ruined-tail c4 and all other substitutions I could think of were much clumsier. (And the clue was already clumsy enough.)
@jafe I first wanted to make that just "digital", but the fact that "digitalis" is also a word came in handy.

Nice :)
I looked at drugs for increasing blood pressure but didn’t notice that one.
And didn’t think of it but should have
You know what this means @Gareth

1:32 PM
CCCC Time to put an end to running group (5)
What does it mean, @Rubio?
(it means it's increased your blood pressure?)

I think it just means that you're up to post the next C4. Which you've just done.

Yup. A nice straightforward one for a change.
(of course now it'll go unsolved for the next two weeks)

Cuz that’s how these things go
Hm. FLEE+T seems possible but too loose?

1:48 PM
Huh? Where's the putting an end to? And "running" can't clue "flee", no?

I hope not hehe
The “putting an end to” is moving the T after it

"x to put and end to y" for "yx" makes some sense

Ah! I haven't said anything, then.

2:03 PM
It’s obvious. A running group is clearly a group of LAPS and “end” is doing triple duty, signaling we’re putting an end of E[-nd] at the end of laps for LAPSE, a period of time. I can’t believe nobody else got this. *cough*

Q: No Halves Hath the Heptagram

SlowMagicHere is the heptagram: Rules are the same as for the octagram. However, the heptagram has the very nice property that all words are unique. I.e., as you go around, you will not encounter any duplicate words, neither at the vertexes nor along the arrows. Note to @Randal'Thor and @Sconi...

2:25 PM
@Rubio is... that allowed? I didn't think that was allowed.

Q: Birthday girl's casino game

jafe My daughter's birthday is coming up. Here's a fun party game we can play to celebrate. (Bring your wallet!) I have a pair of 6-sided dice, and a standard deck of 52 cards. You place your stake (say €1) on the table and get to pick either my age, or my daughter's age. Both of these nu...

2:42 PM
It’s very not allowed. For avoidance of any doubt, I am not remotely serious about that “solution”.

3:17 PM
Also for the avoidance of doubt: neither FLEET nor LAPSE is the intended answer.

1 hour later…
4:37 PM
@GarethMcCaughan I’m shocked ... *shocked* I say ... that it wasn’t LAPSE. :)

Q: Change 'graph-theory' tag name

JonMark PerryWe have a graph-theory tag which covers puzzles involving graphs, for example: Step into the Octagram but calling it 'graph-theory' is a bit prententious for a site called 'Puzzling'. May I suggest a new tag called simply 'Graphs', or just a name change of the existing tag.

Q: No point shuffling, just pick your cards
