Lol the ms paint moon gets the star
better quit your job and start selling art :)
meanwhile the artist remains jobless :p
Sid
Sid
@Tech What is partial US shift?
@Sid 2-10
Extends upto like 11 or 11.30 sometimes..
Sid
Sid
Ah. Okay.
That's rough
15:03
So, its like.. At 6 o clock I see my US based colleagues
2 to 10 non-stop stackexchanging. That's cool.
Yeah.. :p
Where I work there are some contractors from Bangalore and it's hard to make meetings it seems
@n_palum For them? No. For us? Yes. We are called up during really odd times.
Real work starts after 6-7 pm
And production issues after 10 pm :p
Yeah that's what I meant
I see people coming in at 7 a.m our time, and they have to be in meeting with Bangalore folks where it's like 4 pm already
15:08
Hmm.. Yeah.. I have worked with people in Italy. And they have a really longer working schedule..
When I visited, I used to visit my office at around 7 am in the morning
For the CCCC, first thing that came to mind for Warning Def (10): ADMONITION
And due to the late sunset there, they used to work upto 9.30 or 10 pm :p
Wow :O
@n_palum Which is a mix of ADMIT and ONION. If you can just figure out a way that "leaky" and "shelter" mean ADMIT and ONION, you've solved it! :P
Sid
Sid
Oh, Yes. Right.
Great work, @n_palum.
15:14
Does it have to necessarily be ADMIT and ONION?
To me 'takes' implies it's inside of another word
There's also AMID NOTION and DOMINATION*
Leaky could mean holey, or minus 1+ letters from the middle
Sid
Sid
Leaky=Tears=Onion. Admit=Shelter(Like giving shelter to people=Admitting people, Iguess)
Ohhh that makes sense Sid
Makes sense, but leaky to onion is a bit stretchy for my taste
...nope
15:17
@Sid Waaaaaay too tenuous.
So ADMIT (Shelter) takes ONION (Leaky), Warning = ADMONITION (def)
If we are taking that..
Sid
Sid
Yes, agreed, it is stretchy..
Onion isn't even fully 'taken'
I'm pretty sure that's not right
:/ hm
I could see ADMIT meaning "shelter" as a verb, but there's no way that "leaky" means ONION.
15:18
Yeah
Also I updated the archive GPR
Although the "most days between clues" says 2017/10/05 now, implying Gareth's last one, but it says the count is 153
@n_palum That's my brother's work.
Tooo good
Very nice :)
@n_palum That's because you said the last clue was in October of this year. YYYY/MM/DD. No one, anywhere, ever writes dates as YYYY/DD/MM.
@manshu Can you identify her? :)
15:26
Oh geeeeez
Even though I can't. But if I were given two guesses then they would be Hema Malini and Madhuri Dixit (?)
I fixed it - it was close to that 7 day record
Wait
it's Madhubala
Oh yes :)
Exactly that.
@n_palum What's funny is that I would think an American the least likely to make that mistake, because of your odd and confusing custom of writing dates as MM/DD/YYYY. You're used to putting the month first.
15:29
idk how this name hit my brain. :p
Hum-Tum
Nice. That was quick
Yes. I have seen that movie.
@GentlePurpleRain "Our odd and confusing customs" I didn't pick how we do things :P
Not blaming you.
Just your country. :P
15:30
But IMO it doooes make the most sense
Sid
Sid
US is probably the only country which uses such weird system of writing dates
Year/Month/Day is clearly the most sensible
Wednesday, May 10th, 2017 - in order of what's important to understand what today is
and weights too.
followed by Day/Month/Year
15:31
It does make some sense that if you generally say something like "May 10, 2017", you would also write 05/10/2017.
and don't forget for the lengths :p
But most of the world says "10 May, 2017".
Old English :P
< Adds "Americanize Puzzling" to running platform >

15:32
Make Puzzling Great Again
Rubio is already running on that
I get confused about dates all the time. Are these orange ones okay to eat? Why is there no pit in this one? Stuff like that.
Sid
Sid
@n_palum Well, someone won an election on that platform already..
When did Puzzling start to become not great?
3
@Sid Don't remind me
@manshu Clearly when Rubio joined
Sid
Sid
15:33
Except, it was not Puzzling. Something a lot less important :P
This is probably one of the places online where I see the lowest percentage of Americans overall. It really seems to represent a wide swath of the world.
@Mithrandir You can keep your fruity puns mister
Why @Rubio why?
@GentlePurpleRain Totally agree, big reason why I love it :)
Two of our mods are American right now. I'm the only one fighting for the underdog... :P
15:34
@n_palum it was better than the alternative
@manshu It's all my fault. Join me in my campaign to Ban Rubio.
7
^ told you
Ban Rubio we will.
@CalvT okay I'm home for half an hour or so, then I have a cricket match. What did you want to talk about?
@GentlePurpleRain מה עם כל האמיריײקים האלה? נו? איפה כל הישראלים?
15:36
@BeastlyGerbil perfect timing - just back from lunch
I want to change my puzzle to "My Friends Car" instead of mine
It's for the follow on
@Rubio you haven't nominated yourself yet :P
Means that you'll have to change your answer slightly - just the first line
Ok, so I just need to change my answer to your friends car instead of your car?
15:37
Yup
ok, I'll do it now
I've just changed the question
@BeastlyGerbil This could all just be a hype and he isn't running XD
@BeastlyGerbil Cheers. Enjoy cricket :)
Okay, I only had to add on word :P
15:38
This has greatly strayed from trying to figure out why the Onion was Admitted
Thanks. And great first puzzle! Very well received too
@n_palum what onion?
My guess for the 4C was ADMONITION which GPR pointed out has ADMIT ONION in it
We think shelter can equal admit, but onion for leak not so much
@n_palum you don't like the '? Or did our edits clash
has @Alonja confirmed either way?
15:41
was that really relevant?
@CalvT The edits clashed
He has not confirmed anything
Ok so I'll reject then
ok so we just have to wait for him I guess
You can deny it
oops I accepted
15:42
@BeastlyGerbil images like that are always relevant...
@n_palum did @Alconja say anything about whether he was going to nominate himself?
@BeastlyGerbil It still wasn't approved yet, Calv can decline it, nbd
@Mithrandir मेरा नाम जेंटलप्राल्परेन है मुझे यकीन नहीं है कि आप किस व्यक्ति से पूछ रहे हैं ... (Google translate -- no idea if it's accurate)
@BeastlyGerbil I believe he said he is not nominating due to time and availability
15:43
Wait a minute. That doesn't even look like the same language...
It isn't...
Google told me it was Hindi, so I translated back to Hindi.
... *smacks Google*
3
Why does Google not recognize Hebrew? O_o
@BeastlyGerbil and Brent withdrew
@n_palum oh why!?
15:45
in Puzzling 2017 Moderator Election Chat, 50 mins ago, by Mithrandir
8 hours ago, by Brent Hackers
That's me withdrawn. Plenty of better candidates appeared shortly after me. Ah well :)
Okay, that's weird. Now it's saying Hebrew. And giving me a totally different translation...
Interpreting the Hebrew as Hindi, the translation was something like, "What is the person's name? Now? What is your name?"
...I'm not really sure how you can interpret Hebrew as Hindi, though...
o_o
@BeastlyGerbil right, they do mess up the grammar.
my translate says "What about all those Americans? Well? Where are all the Israelis?"
15:49
It's supposed to say 'What's with all these Americans'
And the other half is correct?
Correct
hey @edderiofer - great puzzle, I enjoyed working on it a lot
Well. Google Translate is correct. :p
@manshu You read Hebrew? Or you're interpreting it as Hindi?
@Mithrandir Hebrew reads from right to left, correct? Does that mean you put the question mark at the beginning of the sentence?
15:52
I copied "מה עם כל האמיריײקים האלה? נו? איפה כל הישראלים?" and translated it using google to English.
@GentlePurpleRain no, I put it at the end. But most things don't support that :/
Right. But did you set the language to Hindi first? That's where I got confused. It seems to think it is valid Hindi, but the translation is completely different than the Hebrew.
Hindi and Hebrew don't even share any letters o_O
No. I didn't select the Hindi language first. I selected that "Detect Language" option.
16:03
@Rubio I second that, well at least the bit I helped with :P
Sid
Sid
@gentle lol. It didn't write "GentlePurpleRain". The translate you used wrote
"GentlePralpRain.
Interesting. Google said, "Did you mean Gentle Purple Rain?" (with spaces). But I said no.
Sid
Sid
Had you used the spaces, it would have given you literal translation of each word
"Naram Bengani Baarish" :p
Heh, didn't realize that this existed
Sid
Sid
16:10
Google says "sajjan" instead of "naram"
Heh. This is kind of fun: translationparty.com
@Rubio Did you have any favourite clues in the grid?
I loved the "headquarters" one :)
Yeah, so did Deusovi.
I note of course that while my puzzle contains four Caesar-shift clues, those are apparently nonexistent anywhere else (even though you seem to have had little trouble realizing that they were that).
I liked ROAMED too; that took me a while to get, I had a sneaking feeling how it was going to work but I didn't realize "ME" until very late
oh - yeah, I got two straightaway. KEG took a while, I was kinda mad at myself for not getting it :)
16:15
Funnily enough, Devjoe commented that his first thought was "Oh, it's an anagram of SETTER, which is... STREET. Hmm."
also, "accidental smart" took forever. and I was almost sure it was going to be a bad clue when I first looked at it.
What, did you think it'd be an anagram of SMART, with no definition?
when I finally got it, it was one of those "oh you clever b---" moments
I won't admit to how much time I spent looking at the grid for MARTS and TRAMS. :)
@GentlePurpleRain That party thing is such a bad translator
Ha. Considering that Deusovi tested it, do you really think he'd overlook a clue without a definition?
16:18
Well, no. :)
@n_palum I think that's meant to be the point...
:) I know
Some of my other favourites include TULPA, LIE, ARAB, LEDGES, WREN, SUM, ENDGAME, and ACREAGE.
I made a couple that took a long time for equilibrium
Sid
Sid
I don't understand how 2 to 8 is BING.
16:20
oh TULPA was frustrating. If I hadn't seen it in the grid I would have never solved it.
2 to 8 is "cubing"
Sid
Sid
@Rubio ^^
CUBING is 2 to 8.
BING is "search".
Yeah, there's definitely some obscure knowledge in here.
Sid
Sid
Ah. Got it.
(oh, funny note there - there's actually a "cubing" search, that takes place on Copper Mountain.)
LIE, BAP, and possibly ENDGAME, for example.
Anyway, the idea for this puzzle game when I tried out this app by Puzzler Media: puzzler.com/digital-apps/word-puzzles/backwords-puzzler
16:23
capturethecube.com
yeah, BAP i didn't know
*hunt puzzle, sorry.
TRAP, I actually laughed at
BAP is definitely a Britishism. If you're outside the UK, you almost certainly won't get it.
I'm a bit embarrassed that I didn't see that everything was a crossword grid, despite the cryptic clues, the answers being only down and across, the grid being symmetrical and having 15 by 15 cells. Anyway, good puzzle.
oh, actually, "NOR" was one of the first clues I solved
16:24
TRAP, by the way, is actually (PART)<.
and it's in the grid on a diagonal, if you look for it
oh. yeah, I annotated it PART* by mistake didn't I, I meant <
But in any case, that Puzzler Media app was pretty terrible.
Well < is a subset of *, isn't it?
True, but still...
Sid
Sid
Wonderful puzzle that. I hadn't actually paid much attention to it since the geniuses were working on it. Now that I see it, That was superb.
16:25
so for the first bit I didn't know they were all across/down because I had an early example that wasn't.
Once it became obvious NOR was an outlier I went back and found it vertically
Maybe you didn't spot that it was a crossword because of the way the entries were arranged in the grid?
After all, not many cryptic crosswords tend to have 2x2 squares in them.
And most of them arrange all the entries on alternate lines (which I expressedly wanted to avoid because that would make things REALLY easy).
@Sid I helped and am most certainly not one of the geniuses :)
No, visually, I was in wordsearch mode with words crossed out with a marker pen. So it was black (or colour) on white for me, not vice versa.
(Hell, that's one of the main reasons why the Backwords app isn't one I'd recommend. Not only are all the entries on alternate lines, they couldn't even be bothered to fill in the remainder with stuff that wasn't immediately obviously garbage.)
oh, that was genius. and maddening.
I kept tripping over words thinking "that's GOT to be a solution to something", and they weren't
So is the app to blame for sending us on a wild chase to fit in WEDDING, AGENT and so on?
That's EXACTLY what I wanted people to do. >:D
Somewhat.
Impeach Trump xD
Then again, that app is responsible for this puzzle anyway.
Fair enough. That almost worked out. Until @n_palum appeared on the scene ...
16:30
What'd I do wrong?
Just solve that puzzle, that's all. :)
"That" referring to "getting solvers tripped up over words that were in the grid but were also red herrings".
Thing is, because there's been other puzzles somewhat like this, I was "sure" from the beginning that this was going to be a case where the unused letters in the wordsearch were going to get used for something, so I was strictly in word-search mode for most of it. By the time I realized it was more crossword than word search, I was too far along to feel like redoing the image. fortunately @MOehm did that, and better than I would have
(What nearly worked out was edderiofer's evilploy to add random words to the grid.)
All I did was put a piece or two together
16:32
After it had been sitting out there in the open for nearly a day.
Would you rather I had filled the rest of the blanks with Qs, Zs, Xs, and Js?!
No, with an anagram of "NO CIGAR, BACK TO SQUARE ONE".
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
And I started the conversation about it today :p Yay!
(Filling the rest with Qs, Zs and so on would have been a cheap way to make the grid a pangram, though.)
16:34
Point is, I feel like in this instance, these red herrings made the puzzle more fun.
@Techidiot Every issue needs someone to address it.
Which isn't something you can say of most red herrings in puzzles.
@MOehm Speaking of... mine is unsolved still!
It's still unsolved here :)
Yes, it is.
As well as on my blog.
Sid
Sid
16:36
Hmm, We have had pretty less number of nominations so far.
Still, reading through the chatlogs, it seems like someone thought I had stolen that puzzle. Pff.
@Rubio Give palum's puzzle as an input parameter to your imgur master snippet :p
Ha! we'll all get t-shirts with "I found the TREASURE of the One-Word-Puzzle" and the redditers and blog readers won't.
I have a reputation to keep, you know.
@Techidiot Wha?
@Sid I'll tell you I wrote up an intro. But I haven't finished the questions. As I've been saying, not sure still
16:37
@edderiofer Nope. That's a general practice of checking whether the puzzle belongs to someone else. And hence was confirmed by @Deus
@n_palum Hehe.. Just remember Rubio having a code to brute force imgur's ;)
Well the imgur bit is the easiest part of the puzzle! maybe...
Sid
Sid
@n_palum So, if you join in, that makes it 7. Rubio is keeping his cards close to his chest. DOn't know if anyone else has showed any interest..
@n_palum Yes, and you can't really give any hints without spoiling which 4.5 of the seven are correct. (I assume e, c, j and Y are the 4.0)
Maybe next time I'll make each cryptic have two answers, and have one set of answers go into one grid and another set of answers go into another grid hidden via imgur...
But maybe I'm getting ahead of myself here.
@BeastlyGerbil Do watch today's terrible run out :p (Rishabh Pant)
16:41
@edderiofer You might want to try this one, then.
As I said, "This puzzle ought to provide a good distraction and nothing more. No, this flavourtext really shouldn't give you any hints as to the puzzle's solving path or answer.".
@edderiofer You might like the Cryptic Crossword that (I think Sp3000) had both normal and cryptic clues
Oh yeah! the one Oehm just linked
@Sid Well a lot of people who've joined in already weren't ones that showed interest anywhere else
I'm not the best at solving cryptics however.
Especially not here, where it looks like there's a gimmick involved that makes things harder.
Anyway, time to write up the post-mortem, because that's apparently allowed.
@Techidiot No. That'd be no fun.
17:01
would it be at all possible for a mod to investigate this user
I'm getting anomalies trying to find their parent or other contributions
Sid
Sid
Agreed, something seems to be off.
Don't discuss it publicly, give your flags with reasoning. That is all
I can't flag if I can't find a parent post
Oh true I just realized that.
Sid
Sid
@n_palum we have been advised not to flag chat messages. And there is no post to flag..
17:04
But I would agree in investigating.
Same join times.
17:14
@Rubio That was a joke :) @n_palum Will wait for your pencil eyes
That'll be a different puzzle, the current one isn't even solved anyway :P
I seem to remember seeing a post, now deleted, by that user. i'll look in a bit
@n_palum What? I am referring to the eyes you were going to sketch.. :)
I'm going to sketch them for a puzzle now
Oh.. Hehe.. Nice.
17:18
@Rubio I don't really wanna say anything else. Can we take action as RO?
I'm not going to, no.
Okay, just checkin.
Sid
Sid
Yes, @Rubio your memory is right.
Oh, that was the CC I was trying to solve, I didn't because I'm bad at CCs
What CC?

I suggested adding treat/cooks to improve the surface reading, but I failed to solve the actual clue

Postmortem of A Puzzle Whose Answer Is A Single Word is up: puzzling.stackexchange.com/a/51672
18:10
I think I may be done with Contact for the day
@Rubio sighs yeah...
Use your new time to do a nomination!
that sounds like a great idea
Rubio for Consul!
I may be writing one...
18:30
ah, looks like I'll have to start waking up earlier if I want to catch the morning contact games
@ffao Well, for Rubio, dcfyj (and I think Scon) and I it's early afternoon :)
Apparently I don't count
I thought you were Belo Horizonte? Is that not around 3:30 right now?
I gotchu bud
I was, I moved to Vancouver, BC and didn't update my profile
Don't let that edit fool you! I wasn't in that chat post!
18:33
Yeah, it seems there is reasonably often a game that starts aroundish Noon Eastern
Ah so you're in PDT now.. That's quite a change
@dcfyj No one knooows
Partially because I still want it to contain some reference to the fact that I'm Brazilian so I can get away with language mishaps
Good temperate weather though
It's ok ffao, people will understand what you're talking aboot :P
You move for work? Or fun? Or family? or N/A?
work, I don't like the fact that my family is now 6000+ miles away :(
18:38
@ffao That's what the internet is for, long distance communication :)
Although, no physical contact can suck for some
That is pretty rough.
I have to decide eventually if I want to search West Coast or other places for work and leave behind the family in the East coast
and the international airports in Canada and Brazil are in Toronto and Sao Paulo, which forces me to take at least 2 stops (and a 30 hour trip in total) to get back to BH
west-to-east coast is just 5 hours, right? that's a lot more reasonable
You can't go through SEA-TAC?
I can, but I would need to take a 3-hour bus ride with luggage to get to sea-tac and go through immigration in the way
and of course, from Sea-Tac I would need to take yet another flight to LA, Dallas, Atlanta, or somewhere else that actually connects to Brazil
Sid
Sid

Being away from family sucks especially if they are so far away..
I am living like 350km away from home and yet I still suffer from homesickness occasionally.
my university was 600km away from home, whenever I suffered from homesickness I took a bus Friday night and came back Sunday evening
might be an option for you
Sid
Sid
@ffao I get tired by travelling too much. So, I don't prefer to travel.
@Social Sorry? Why for what>
and @ffao I occasionally have classes on saturday as well..
classes on Saturday? that's criminal
Sid
Sid
@Social No. My hometown didn't have schools for 11th and 12th grade. So, I had to move to the state capital for further studies.
@ffao it was 6 to 4 on saturdays..
is there any purpose to classes on sat? is it to study for university entry exams?
18:53
Some cultures have classes on 6 days a week (like Japan for example)
Sid
Sid
Well, yeah, but it is normal to have classes 6 days a week.
@Sid The US and Canada only have them 5 days a week
I know my university has occasional Saturday classes - but those were often for tests, with a few exceptions
Sid
Sid
Well, Yes, my saturday classes usually comprised of a subjective test, an objective test and some subject lessons which nobody cared about.
yes, I only had classes 5 days a week as well, except for the last grade in which we had mock tests every Saturday
Because I'm slightly insane I actually like math tests, so I didn't mind
18:59
@Sid thanks, I had found it already.
19:12
@SocialBaloney I think I have already seen that video an year ago :p
No I haven't
@Sconibulus everything is fine
I am imagining Gandalf patting Scon on the head saying "there there"
That is much less fun than Gandalf

I went in and the first thing was this is fine pins galore
I thought you had seen a ghost. Calm down now.
:p
Well yeah, what did you expect? :P
everything will be fine n_palum
I was not sure, that's why I peeked
The pinned posts you talking about? This is fine.
19:31
Ba dum tish.
Y'all got jokes now
some fine jokes we have in this room
@ffao for example?
^^
Honestly most of the pin board tends to be jokes
This one got the most stars (on the first page of starred posts of TSL):

@Mithrandir How do you move a message to another room? I've never been able to figure that out...
19:50
@GentlePurpleRain @Mithrandir Also, I swear in Arqade room owners can do it too, is that true?
@MOehm earlier you asked what 4.5/7 were right on my puzzle but it's actually 3.5, one of the ones you listed as being right isn't. I miscounted
