Q: The governor's birthday puzzle

user23087The prison governor surveys the three petty thieves in his panopticon. "Next week is my birthday. I've a mind to free some of you, if you can solve a little puzzle of mine." "I'm going to put you in separate cells. Then I'll give each of you a nine digit code. If you can communicate your code ...

Q: ORTHOGONAL origami FISH t8

Sny SmartieSince the last puzzle got cheesed, we're adding a new restriction (in italics) Fold the shape into a rectangle such that the rectangle is 8 layers thick everywhere. All folds must be orthogonal. Although solutions are not required to be applicable in real life, using an actual sheet of paper is ...

2:42 AM
@Ankoganit Oh wow, nice find. I thought of using Pol in the previous clue but somehow not in this...
And it turns out Jafe was right about the asunder part too

@oAlt that's actually what set me on the right track

i literally looked at pol plus anagram of "era ends us" and couldn't find it

Q: origami USHAPE t3

Sny SmartieFold the shape into a rectangle such that the rectangle is 3 layers thick everywhere. Although solutions are not required to be applicable in real life, using an actual sheet of paper is a great visualization tool. A puzzle for this type of orgami puzzle game made by Ωmega_3301, similar to this ...

CCCC: An animal, it is! (6)

3:03 AM
@juicifer Is this man ("an animal") 'tis (it is) &lit?

it sure is

CCCC: Put date for restructuring after company takeover (4 1'4)

@oAlt CO+(UP D'ETAT)*

On the day that Stiv posted the clue, I actually went on Nutrimatic and found that "spear snouted" was an anagram of "pot era ends US", and it fit the enumeration, and it sounded like an apt expression for being "distant" (if you're spear-snouted then perhaps you keep your distance from people by a spear's length or more, or perhaps people stay away from you because they might get caught by the metaphorical spear), but I was doubting it as it wasn't a common phrase online.
@Ankoganit correct!

CCCC: Perhaps foundation for coup d'etat: bury explosive (6,7)

5:32 AM
Well, as "explosive" can mean "capable of exploding", it might be an anagram indicator. But again, I don't want to resort to Qat or anything like that yet

a foundation could be xxxxxx company but there's no N

BEAUTY PRODUCT = (COUPDETATBURY)*?

ahh there it is

That's perhaps foundation.

@DannyuNDos correct!

Q: Logic and Geometry Problem #6

Mark SteereIs it possible for a deadlock to occur in Necklace? Can there be a square on which neither Red nor Blue can place a stone? If it is possible, I need to see an example of that. If a deadlock is not possible, I need proof of that. Necklace rule sheet

6:31 AM
hmm

6:45 AM
Just in case: When should I give a hint?

@DannyuNDos There's no rule. I've seen a rule of thumb of 24 hours; some wait longer. If you think it's especially hard or easy or you see people are going down the right or wrong path, that could IMO also influence your decision.

6:59 AM
Not related to the C4, but I've just realized that is a tag here.

7:11 AM
@Jafe "there's no n in company" sounds like something a middle manager would say
If a nekomata's assistant uses telepathy, it's a psychic sidekick.

7:32 AM
@PDT To respond to this comment that got somewhat buried, I do look at your riddle off and on but haven't yet found what I would think of as the solution. My main avenue of attack right now is through rot13(fcbggvat cnvef bs eulzvat jbeqf pyhrq, r.t. FUERQQVAT naq QERNQVAT, GJVQQYVAT naq QVQQYVAT, rgp.) but I haven't yet concluded if that's important or not. In time, someone will crack this, I'm sure - don't fret :)

7:43 AM
I'm lost, personally. The second clue made me think of rot13(Grnef sbe Srnef), but then what? And the line "the heart pounds at my side" made me think of the Doctor, but, again, so what? rot13(Gurer ner fvk yvarf — vapyhqvat gur gvgyr ohg abg gur ynfg gjb — fb znlor vg'f bar yrggre sebz rnpu??) As I said, I'm lost. But, then, riddles aren't my strong suit by any means.

@DannyuNDos I think this is the Pokémon ESPEON (A nekomata) = ESP + EON

@Stiv Yep, that's it!

Had to look up what a nekomata was (a new word to me) but once I thought about ESP for telepathy, the rest followed...!
CCCC: Fighter punched my face, triumphant (9)

8:05 AM
@Stiv do you need medical attention?

I've had worse...
On Easter of all days though. Some people are just mean...

@Stiv ahhh, I looked at ESP as well but I didn't think of that

Yeah, Good Friday is a better time for punching (holes).

SLAPHAPPY = SLAP + HAPPY? If slapping counts as a punch.

but where's the definition, then?

8:11 AM
Nvm

PDT
@stiv I am surprised the answer then hasn’t hit you yet, if you haven’t got it from that I must have underestimated my puzzle

Riddles by nature are often difficult to see the way through even when you have some of the parts. Only once everything falls into place do you get that 'aha, this must be it!' moment :)

Regarding the C4... If "Fighter" is the definition part, that would mean the answer is singular, right?

If that's the definition part, then yes - usually singular matches singular, plural matches plural, etc.

@Sphinx "cheese"?

It's probably sense 5 here
...not sure

sense 5? "A substance resembling cream cheese, such as lemon cheese"?
@DanielS um…

Sorry I meant etymology 5

ah
thanks; TIL

8:40 AM
Np
@msh210 Wait really? I didn't even think we'd beat last month haha

@DannyuNDos it could be a proper noun (the name of a fighter)

Uhh

8:53 AM
(just mentioning because I'm not sure whether you'd consider that to be singular)

Yeah, if they're a single person.

what if it's a married person?

An individual, I mean.

yeah, I was kidding

isn't fighter a type of pokemon? could be a theme continuation somehow

8:56 AM
You mean the Fighting type?

@Jafe thanks. It's Hitmontop = hit + m_ + on top

But what's the definition?

I'd continue the theme, but I know nothing about Pokemon. (A Web search aided me in this case.)
@DannyuNDos fighter

@msh210 Exactly right :)

9:00 AM
oh, I should ping @Stiv
… never mind

Stiv was lurking...
3
And apparently talks about himself in the third person

@msh210 nice find and nice assist from Jafe

A Brazilian fighter, it is...

Yeah, he really gets most of the credit for that one. But I'll take the next one :-) . (I'm sure he'll get another chance soon anyway.)
CCCC: Illumination's heavy, with no parking lot (5)

Illumination's not heavy (5)

9:07 AM
@oAlt Yeah, that's "light", but that's too classic.

yeah
P can mean park in an automatic car's gear selector, maybe it can mean parking too?

Would that mean that the answer just lacks a "P"? Who knows...

Maybe yeah
or it also lacks "lot" or a synonym of it
Well, I can't solve it but at least that gives me time to work on my clue stockpile
Well apparently heavy can be a noun

9:26 AM
yeah, illumination's heavy could be a villain in an Illumination film (e.g. Gru)

yeah thats it
Gru with o (nothing) + p for parking = group (lot) @msh210

ahh

I had just found it as well haha

yep! (don't worry, Jafe, you'll get one for yourself sooner or later instead of giving them all away to others)

haha

9:27 AM
And I thought it would be a pokemon again :p

@DannyuNDos nah

CCCC: A professional manipulator: he tests your ability to read upside-down (2)

no = (y)ou(r) upside down?

10:02 AM
@DannyuNDos I don't see how "no" can be clued by "A professional manipulator: he tests"…. In any event, that wasn't my intention, I'm afraid.
(oh, maybe Dr No? I've never read the book / seen the film, dunno whether he's a professional manipulator who tests)

Nvm

Come to think of it, I don't see how you removed the first and last letters, either.

Nvm ×2
I thought "upside-down" was the definition part.
So "no" would refer to logical negation.

ah

Mar 17 at 4:47, by msh210
@Jafe btw, cluing "ho" by "woman" may cause offense. (It's eye dialect for "whore".) "Union leader's prostitute,…" is probably safer.
maybe?

1:46 PM
@DanielS These (PDF)? Never heard of 'em before AFAIR.

2:06 PM
@Jafe John + Lee hooker (a Lee hooker being a sex worker with Lee jeans on)?
(or maybe you're more simply cluing "Lee" by "jeans"… but I'm not 100% sure that works…)

@msh210 yeah this was the idea

oh cool
