A: What are the features of a well-written puzzle?

klm123From my experience as corrector of text puzzles on a Russian puzzle site 3 features are required for a puzzle to be liked by solvers (in order of importance): motivate, be correct, do not be straightforward. It is Interesting. It must have something unusual. This is clearly the most important, ...

^That answers it pretty well, I think
Although definitions of 'interesting' etc. are admittedly opinion-based

Has anyone had any luck with any of paramesis' unsolved grid puzzles?
I was looking at full of stars, but don't really know how to attack it. No idea what the "delta < 1/2" or the colour dot maths implies...
Similarly with island, the name implies that there's yajilin logic involved, but I don't see how/where you could apply that. The main grid seems like some sort of nonogram, but taking that approach leads to contradictions pretty quick...

@Alconja how do you get yajilin from ysaujdiolkiun?
oh, nvm, I see it
yajilin + sudoku
interesting

yeah.. I assume sudoku is the centre bit (since 3x3x9)

yeah

I've never done any yajilin, but according to google we need some numbers with arrows... we have numbers, but not in the grid, nor with arrows...
So not sure if you need to use the edge numbers in the given row/column somewhere to produce a valid yajilin

@Alconja do you know the rules? I can explain

10:54 PM
I wiki'd them, so I think I get it
so I think my comment above must be the trick... you need to take the numbers on the edge and stick them on squares in that column/row... not sure about determining the direction arrows though...

Thought
the three numbers represent number of black circles, black squares, white circles
we have to fill them in and solve the puzzle

first row in top left grid though needs a full row (7,2,2) which seems awkward (and certainly rules out my guess above)

@Alconja wait why

there's only 11 squares, so you can't do 3x number squares pointing at 7 black squares + 2 black squares + 2 black squares = 14 squares
unless you don't put the numbers into squares (then you're back to nonogram style)
but pure nonogram doesn't work either (again, 7/2/2 implies gaps)

we do have 7+2+3+4+5+5 = 3+0+2+1+2+2+2+6+2+2+4, which lends credence to the fact that they're indicating the same thing
every column seems to match one of the rows
but not in the same order, oddly

11:00 PM
I tried interpreting it as the numbers positions of lines to build graphs like in the first image, but that seems to fail pretty quickly too

:| where are the numbers
oh this is island

gtg... back in 30

@Alconja wait what 0 wouldn't work though would it
@boboquack Hmm but it seems like the diagram implies no two black squares are orthogonally adjacent?

@ASCII-only yes
so, the black squares aren't in the first column/third row, because of the 7 in the first puzzle
wait

11:09 PM
Or the second column/row?

there is one black square per region, at a corner/on an edge?
@ASCII-only yes, because of the 7 in the 3rd puzzle
or the 9 in the 2nd puzzle

Just seems a bit weird making it the top/right not like top/left or bottom/right
@boboquack on e.g. the first rectangle there's two too many for that
ok so columns do correspond to reversed rows

@ASCII-only yeah
maybe black squares may only be at a corner of a region
that stuffs up, though:
you can't fit enough squares in the 5th row

@boboquack Edges probably count

yeah, that's what I was thinking

11:22 PM

assuming every square is filled

How do you u know which one is filled circle

wait
@ASCII-only since the corner can't be an empty circle
the sum thing doesn't hold true for the third grid

@boboquack Huh?

like, two rows are swapped
/columns

11:26 PM
Yeah looks like the order is different for each grid

that's why I said "not in the same order"

@ffao ah, didn't realise what you meant then

@boboquack Every square is filled?

11:51 PM
@ASCII-only that's what the example looks like

@boboquack wat?
