@Undo I think you are over worried :)
This site is different than the majority of SE sites, but every site has it's own standards and moderation style ;)
Good luck!

@Seth Yes, but this site is very very different. But yes, I suppose you're right ;)

Q: Would plugin recommendations about Minecraft be on topic?

A: Would plugin recommendations about Minecraft be on topic?

UndoI think the answer is already in the linked question: A question asking what OS is most fun to debug would not be. Conversely, a question asking about Minecraft or Kerbal Space Program mods for worldbuilding would be on-topic. The distinction is not the primary purpose of the software, but th...

Did I interpret the answer right?

@Undo authoritative answer: yes

1:10 AM
@Gilles Yay for authoritative answers! ;)

though you cited the wrong paragraph

Eh?
@Gilles Which one should've I chosen?

> “What editor for [GAME]” is a software recommendation that happens to be related to playing games — again, that's for-a-purpose software, so it's fine.

Not sure that's stronger than the other paragraph, TBH

it's closer to the example in the question: a tool whose purpose is to do something related to the game
rather than the different example of using the game itself as a tool

1:16 AM
Ah, that makes sense.
Updated ;)

Q: The active question page shows 0 ongoing bounties when in fact there is one

SethI just noticed that the active question page shows 0 on-going bounties, but there actually is an on-going one: If you click on the "featured" tab, it shows the number correctly: I guess this is a bug. I wasn't sure how to tag this.. so this will have to do

Q: Can I lift tag-wiki entries from other SE sites?

Journeyman GeekI'm currently asking questions that don't seem to have a tag-wiki entry for the tags I need to use, and there's perfectly good tags on SU for those pieces of software. Can I copy the tag wiki information from SU (and how would I attribute?) to help initially populate these tags?

3:42 AM
You know, I'm starting to see a pattern of the questions using two bulleted lists, one for "musts haves" and another for "nice to haves" being the best questions.
just an early observation, might be of use if we ever make a recommended format for questions/answers.
I'm not sure this question is fully on-topic here. We're a site for recommending software based on a set of requirements, not for comparing two pieces of software to eachother. — Undo 23 secs ago

A: reference management for Libreoffice/Openoffice

SethLibreOffice actually has a good bibliography feature built in. I'm not sure how it compares to Word's since I've never really used either. However, the first thing you need to do is update your LibreOffice. The latest version is 4.2.0.4; you're a long way behind! The first thing to do is to ma...

Is that too in-depth? I mean, we're just supposed to be a recommendation site.

4:00 AM
@Seth: there's no such thing as too indepth IMO
I'll throw that an upvote first, mess with it a bit, and try to give more details on what MS office does right :/
If its alright. its good enough but not quite there

@JourneymanGeek OK. I'm not sure I really understand your question in it's entirety, which was why I was a bit unsure about answering.
@JourneymanGeek Could you maybe try to clarify the last paragraph?
@Undo I think so, he is comparing software, not asking for a recommendation.
Thanks for the edit @Undo.

@Seth no problem.
Yay review queues!
goes to review stuff

4:18 AM
@Seth: Your answer is roughly 90% of what I need. The other 10% is the seriously annoying part. I'll boot into the VM with ms office installed later and try to explain more in depth.

@JourneymanGeek Great thanks!

Nope.

A: My instincts are all wrong

Tim PostIt's a pretty simple checklist to ask a good, narrowly-scoped recommendation question. Straight to the point, succinct title Don't use words like 'best' or 'goo...

@Fractaliste no, very different requirement set

@Gilles He's asking for JS code completion and syntax checking which the other question asked to (but the second one required PHP too).
If I ask just for JS code completion without syntax checking isn't it a new duplicate ?

There can be software that only deal with JS which would suit your new question but not the other one.

Otherwise we are going to a lot of very close question.

Voting patterns here aren't encouraging. Ok, I'm conflicted, but: +5 for a two-line answer, +4 for an answer that recommends using built-in features when possible and the same software for the advanced use case
and it isn't a matter of timing, the answers were posted within 1min of each other

11:43 AM

More people take the time to read the two-line answer than a few paragraphs long answer.
@Gilles It doesn't suck, but it's not great either.
It's a bit broad though

it was closed and reopened twice, so it's clearly controversial
I still think it should be closed
it's far too broad
weird that 10 people voted to close but only 3 downvoted

Downvotes and close votes have a different purpose

it has 10 answers already, basically everyone's favorite editor

I didn't even answer with my favorite editor

11:47 AM
neither did I, because I don't answer questions that should be closed

I haven't decided on the question

@Gilles I think its not too broad. The fact that there are many programs fitting that need doesn't make it too broad. If the OP hasn't decided on more specific criteria for his workflow than thats fine. (If I had posted a Q about a editor to fit my needs the list of requirements would have been longer :))

@Undo yes, it's VLQ

@Gilles Ok, I flagged as such and it was disputed ;(

we have plenty of questions to get us going, we don't need more questions in this private beta

Maybe we need to get everyone on the same page?

we should spend the rest of the private beta on quality control

We shouldn't stop people from contributing, though.

2:33 PM
I was thinking of making a meta post to this effect. I don't have time to write it now, maybe tonight

Yeah, good idea.
We need people to keep posting because that's how they get rep to actually perform these quality control things.

You need 1 rep to edit or downvote or vote to close
15 rep to flag
and at that point we need some quality guidelines
e.g. should this answer be summarily deleted

Yes, but we need people that can handle those flags (1kers work quite nicely) and people to approve the edits.

SE staff can handle flags, but they tend to err on the side of permissiveness on a young site
though they might see it differently given that this is a bit of a special case

Yes, but we do want to be as self-sustaining as possible.

2:36 PM
@Undo I know some of the community here wants a free-for-all. I see my mod nomination is controversial… I expected as much. We really need to hash out quality control on meta

Absolutely.
I'm not saying we should have a free-for-all, but the more self-moderation we can perform the better.
As long as we train people correctly, as you say.

I'd like to see whether we can do hardware recommendations here
anybody got a (good!) hardware recommendation to ask?

We're for software recs, right? Wouldn't hardware be a whole different site?
But I imagine something along the lines of those hardware 2-factor auth thingies would be good.

@Undo the site name is not a good argument
sometimes sites start with the wrong name for silly reasons

Yes, but people committed under it. Aren't they (and SE) expecting a software site?

9:22 PM
for example Science Fiction & Fantasy started out as “science fiction” — a few people said “no! science fiction only! I don't want fantasy here!”

If we were to do it, I would want a CM go-ahead first.

fortunately the majority was for not making the distinction
French Language started out as a merger of several Area 51 proposal, one of which was an English/French translation site. Yet we don't do translations on French.
The early beta is the time to hash out these things
Area 51 isn't good at it

Then post something on Meta asking if we can.

Q: Are hardware recommendations on-topic?

@Gilles I reopened and approved your edit, but I think we'd really be pushing the scope of the site too far if we expanded to hardware recommendation questions. — Tim Post 2 days ago

9:25 PM
we need to have a few good questions, not that question which was poor in the first place and where the asker insisted on making it worse
and we need to have a debate on meta with arguments, like the one about games. Not “the site is called software so we can't do hardware”
or the debate on websites, it looks like we're going to allow pretty much any website, even ones that can't reasonably be called webapps

Tim kinda said right there that hardware is pushing it.

My position is: this is a site to ask about recommendations of computer tools to achieve a purpose. What part of the computer is hardware and what part is software doesn't matter.
Now, I don't know if it's the right position, because hardware recommendations have problems of their own. Hardware becomes obsolete very quickly, for one. And price is a lot more often an important element than it is for software.

Hmm. I'm not sure hardware recommendations would work as well as software ones.. especially since hardware is much more opinion based.

But we need some reasoning, not “it's called software so sod off”
@Seth so let's have a few good questions and see what happens
or else let someone with experience of good hardware recommendation questions tell us what went wrong

btw @Gilles wanna rename the room now?

like 'the binary string of this consists 70% of zeros'

I need to update that osmand answer which was quite short
I know it works because I had similar enough requirements, but I need to explain why and how it works
What's Meta on OSX, again?

Yep.
@Gilles I think it's usually Command

isn't that Control?

But I dunno what meta is, other than a site with a depressing color theme.

11:56 PM
it's the traditional unix name for Alt

I think it's control, yeah. How could I test it?

you're right, I should use terminology that the asker knows (like I explained what “electric” and “window” mean in Emacs)
Emacs uses both Control and Meta in its default shortcuts
the manual should say, let me look

Hmmm... maybe option? Option-A works for screen.

> By default, the <alt> and <option> keys are the same as <Meta>. The Mac <Cmd> key is the same as <Super>, and Emacs provides a set of key bindings using this modifier key that mimic other Mac / GNUstep applications (see Mac / GNUstep Events).
