Q: Reverse Recommendations: If X is the answer what is the question?

OxinaboxI was considering today, if questions of the form: Reverse Requirements Form I am considering Fortran as a tool for numerical computation. OxinaboxAnyone else finding that their instincts on what is a good question are wrong? Since questions that are off topic, on any other SE site are on topic here. Q: We should not answer with "Anti-recommendations"

OxinaboxWhen I saw this question, I was tempted to answer with answer along the lines of Don't use GIMP, this would be the wrong tool for the job. No one mentioned GIMP but, I felt a urge to encourage people away from the tool (I like gimp but it wasn't the answer) However, I did not because that...

Anyone know any good chat software?

@TimPost Hi, yeah, I'd like to recommend chat.stackexchange.com -- it has pretty robust features like starring interesting posts, removing posts so non-owners can't see them, editing posts, "oneboxing" of pictures and certain sites' content, etc.
its only limitation is that the people who maintain it seem not to like us using it too much... oh well... you can't have it all in one package, right?
still, it's my favorite chat software ever, and replaces IRC in that respect, because of all the neat features that you can't find anywhere else

recently made a Websocket service using Boost.Asio, but now I'm starting to like the way Java EE's Websocket API is sounding. Is this the right place to ask, and if so does anybody here have any experience or other info you might feel useful?
Also, how is Microsoft's C# websocket API?

6:00 AM
@ClosetGeek based on what you just posted, unless you can make your question a lot more specific and less wishy-washy, I don't think it'd be a good fit for the softwarerecs main site. here, however, in chat... probably fine

Q: How should I accept answers?

FractalisteThe choice of the best software which fits my needs is quite subjective. Is there a recommended guideline for...

@TimPost that is ill defined. What do you mean by chat? Like IRC or a desktop client for Instant messaging?

Q: Is it acceptable to use 'best' in a question?

MadTuxObviously, a question like "What is the best Linux distro" is just BAD in every way, but if it is a narrower question ( like "What is the best Linux distro for everyday use on my old G4 PowerBook" ), is it still OK? In other words, is the word 'best' bad in itself, because it causes opinion base...

Interesting point. Whenever someone asks for a software-rec, I usually suggest a working app that doesn't crash a minimum 50% of the time and has minimal features.
If I think an app has potential and can feel the user's need, I'll probably tag the app as unstable but a promising one.
I think "good" software is implied and probably doesn't need mentioning.

that is the goodest best answer ever.

Q: Is the desktop tag meaningful?

OxinaboxA desktop tag showed up today, in this question. I don't think it contributes much (if at all). The linux tag, also on the question, tells us what we need to know. Oh hey, what's up?

@TimPost Me has a question.

@Tim I'm confused - all my recent tag wiki excerpt suggestions were rejected with the reason "Defining what [tag] is does not make for a good wiki excerpt. Excerpts should describe why and when a tag would be used. See bit.ly/hYcN";. But looking at the tag page, that's kinda what they all are (and what they are on every site I've been on so far).

What's with the "New feed items" appearing in the corner?

3:14 PM
Am I missing something painfully obvious?
@3ventic The alternative to having Stack Exchange post them all as real messages.

It's annoying
Where can I turn it off?

@3ventic Ye can't.

It's called the ticker.

Mods and room owners can.

._.

3:16 PM
wonders where that name came from

Why would you have a notification in the corner that you have to manually dismiss over messages that go away on their own after they've served their usefulness?

Bugggggy

@Undo Give me a few minutes to get with Robert and find out, let me grab your history too. Hang tight.

@TimPost Ok, thanks!

3:17 PM
That looks very annoying in the corner of the eye when I'm trying to focus on playing games :(

Oooh, that does look hideous on a black background.

I guess I need to add it to the stylesheet but meh
it's still annoying
It's like a new message indicator, you just have to stop whatever important you're doing and check it

Usually sites have a meta question feed as normal messages in their chatroom, but we found out pretty quickly that this site has a very active meta :P

If it is very bothersome, I can take it off. It was me who put it there.

I'm fine with it.

3:22 PM
I'm too used to the bridge's ways I guess
(all new questions, meta and main, are posted as messages)

Wow
We might be able to start doing that, but only after things calm down quite a bit.

There aren't a lot of new questions tho

Maybe things have calmed down.

3:45 PM
@Undo This is a common problem and resolution (rejecting a lot of early tag wiki excerpts) on the opening days of a new site...
In the most general case, I would reject a tag excerpt that says something like "[Email] An electronic system used to send messages between users".
Unhelpful, right? That doesn't help explain when and why this tag should be used.
So on Software Recs, there are a lot of "specific products" that are used as tags. I thought about this a long time, but there wasn't really a good "when and why" explanation that would suit these very product-specific tags. Their use is basically self-evident.
But when it comes back to defining terminology (e.g. [html]) or even broader product categories (e.g. [windows]), we're back to the traditional means of writing tag excerpts. They there's no use in saying that [windows] is a proprietary operating system written by Microsoft in Cupertino California. They need to explain why the tag should be used.
Sorry about the confusion, rejections start going down fast as folks learn how to best write these things. But SoftwareRecs have added a few twists and new challenges.

@RobertCartaino Ok, so... would [Email] Questions about an electronic system used to send messages between users work?
Or does it need to be more in-depth?

Excerpt usage seems very different from community to community
On Arqade, most excerpts are "A [Release Year] [Genre], developed by [Developer] for [Platforms]. [Short Description]."
Mostly because the use is usually self-evident

sadly, it doesn't have a good text editor. They should make a vi plugin for it x) — MadTux 1 hour ago
sigh
why can't all communities be as mature as Unix & Linux? We had a Emacs vs Vim thread and it was all civilized and polite

I want to believe. That's virtually impossible in an emacs vs vim discussion.

@Undo No that wouldn't be instructive about why you would use this tag. You're just defining the "word", not how the tag would be used. Let's use a real tag like [windows].
Saying [windows] for questions about [windows] (isn't any more helpful that saying "for questions about the operating system written by microsoft"
User's aren't asking about "windows", the software. So Certainly there is a use case for having the tag. What is it?
For example... (I don't know this example to be accurate, so I am totally making this up)
[Windows] For software requests needing to be available on the Windows operating system specifically. For version-specific requirments, please specify the [windows-7] or [windows-xp] or [windows-vista] tags.

4:00 PM
@RobertCartaino Ahh... so we want 'meta information' in the tag. That makes more sense now.

Example: on Unix & Linux, the tag wiki excerpt for [windows] is
> Use this tag for interoperability with Windows (dual boot, virtual machines, mixed networks, porting software, …)

So lemme try one - would "[html] For software requests needing to input or output in the HyperText Markup Language." be right?

Yes, essentially that's exactly what wiki excerpts are for. Meta for the tag. Not what the "word" means, but why and how it is being use here (the site).

Robert's type stats: 29 words / second.

even Unix users know what Windows is. But we did have users who were surprised why there was a tag at all. And the excerpt also discretely reminds the user that this isn't the window tag (which is about manipulating X11 windows)

4:04 PM
I guess I'll be happy being ignorant of both emacs and vim...

@3ventic Learn vim.

I haven't gotten anywhere with emacs. I can do basic stuff using vim. :D

I can't do anything with vim
and I haven't heard of emacs before now

@3ventic When the terminology used in a tag is not obvious (obscure or not well-known) sometimes simply letting folks know what the tag or acronym means is pretty much all that is needed.

for example, on SO, many tag excerpts say “a library for doing X in language Y”

4:09 PM
Yeah, the deeper, more specific the tag, the more self-evident why you would need it is. It's the broader concepts that trip up most of the excerpt writers.

Ok, methinks I get it now. Thanks @RobertCartaino!

And sometimes excerpts don't work at all and you hate the people who named the software being tagged
looking at the developer of Glitch

@Undo Great. Sorry about the confusion.

Q: What if a software recommendation exists but for a different platform?

Peeyush KushwahaFor example, look at this question : iPad app for offline HTML/CSS/JavaScript tests What if I am looking for software with almost the same criteria, but for a different platform like perhaps Android? A: Nominate temporary moderators for this site here

UndoI'd like to nominate Gilles. He's been very active on Meta, and all his answers are quite well thought out. He's also quite experienced on the network, and already a moderator on several sites (which is quite important on a site like this)

@Gilles ^ ?
(also, give yourself an upvote on my behalf)

Not undermining Gilles' position (he is really insightful) but it might be a tad early to do nominations on temp-mod.

@joker Oh I agree, but they did feature it - I assume that means they want suggestions, right?

Oh they featured it.. Changes things, certainly.

yeah
aaaand I'm out of votes again. They should give people more votes on private beta sites. Or betas in general.

Yeah. More votes. Plz?
although it might lead to people just repcapping by even more, which wouldn't help much of anything except make posts have a higher average score.

@Undo thanks
I can't say that was unexpected
given my activity in meta

;)

I think I would make a good mod here (though I'm sure some would hate me for too heavy-handed moderation)
I'm not sure I'm prepared to expend the effort
I already spend a LOT of time on SE
This will depend on the direction the site goes

Rope in ChrisF and this site would have two experienced mods xD

Most of my pinned tabs on Chrome are SE tabs lol

I'm only willing to spend energy on this site if I think it has a chance to succeed

@jokerdino As in better than you expected?
Huh, Rory Alsop has five diamonds.
Never knew that.

@Undo Yep. But this is just day 2. So I have hope :D

I think that if we can make it out of private beta, we have a shot at it.

5:45 PM
@jokerdino why do you not think this site will work?

Let's see. Software-rec questions are some of the most hated questions across the network.

... and (some) mSO people are the most hated people throughout the network.
Sooooo....

Like who?

They are big lists type with anything goes as answers for them.

Never mind, bad question.

5:47 PM
@Seth Meh, we tend to make enemies whenever we stomp on a programming question or downvote a proposal to oblivion :P

So, if you put all the bad questions together and try to make a site out of it.. you get the point.

Yeah, we need to be extremely strict.

@Undo Funny.. I don't think I have any enemies. I hope.
@Undo this

And its totally understandable that you don't want to have SW-Rec on regular sites here as you would need to establish consistent rules for them all the time. But still, on every (tech) page they pop up so there seems to be lots of interest into them.

i also generally brand SW-rec as lazy questions.

5:49 PM
Just thinking out loud... I wonder what would have happened if we had launched meta.SR first, then SR itself two or three hours later.
Implementation nightmare, I know. But it's a neat thought experiment.

And there are even users (like Ira Baxter) who explicitly say that they want to provide tool-answers but complain that they cant. So, there is a usergroup that will answer such questions.
But software is all about being lazy. Our intend is to make machines do work for us.
So, basically, I disagree. SW-rec is going to rock. I'm certain :)

Touche.

Good points @AngeloNeuschitzer
How do people manage to participate in more than one site at a time?

I wouldn't be sad if this site succeeds. I would actually be happy because I can then quickly figure a particular app for my specific need.

@Undo one or two days later would have been cool. So the "whats on" and "whats off" questions could already have been answered. But I guess it doesn't matter in the end as the beta runs for (iirc) three weeks (?)

5:53 PM
@AngeloNeuschitzer Private betas should run for a week. But sometimes they're extended.

private beta is given at least a 7 day run.

@Undo ONE week only? Oh dear!

public beta runs as long as it is deemed necessary

@jokerdino and as much as you wouldn't be sad, a lot of people will :)

@AngeloNeuschitzer We have 'as long as it takes' to graduate.

5:55 PM
whew thats good.
'cause I think it will take some discussion about whats proper (and whats not)
I came to chat to ask what you think about the Website / Webapp question on meta meta.softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/questions/191/…

i think it is ontopic on webapps.SE anyway
I wouldn't mind such questions here but I am not the authority.

I say asking for "website" recommendations is off-topic, but you can ask about web apps.

@jokerdino I disagree with that: recommendations and lists are very different. But a lot of people (on both sides of allowing/forbidding) don't recognize that. This site can only work if we recognize the difference.
@AngeloNeuschitzer Ira Baxter is an experienced spammer. Not a good reference point

@Gilles Is he? I didn't notice.

@AngeloNeuschitzer he's had a lot of answers deleted. I don't have data but I'd expect him to be the user with the most posts deleted with a spam penalty

@TimPos - I'm not sure if PHP could be considered the "worst software" as much as it tends to have the worst developers (present company excluded). Your starting to see some pretty lame examples of software pop up in the android market, although Java is a much safer language for a noob to screw up with.

Angelo NeuschitzerAs a non native English speaker I sometimes will have the requirement for software to be in my native language (German). Win8.1 here

@3ventic Cool. Off-topic, but do you like it?

Yeah
I get better performance in most games and I like the improvements made to task manager and desktop UI
Metro is, well, still pretty bad for a desktop PC, but it doesn't bother me as someone who doesn't use start menu at all
and I like windows+S for search a lot

Yes, I like it overall too. Metro is.. a bit weird, but MS needed to make some big changes somewhere.
I personally liked Windows 8's search better than 8.1's but oh well.

I think the idea behind metro is great, the problem is the current app selection.
The apps tend to take a mobile approach even when targeting desktop PCs, which is bad, and they tend to run pretty badly as developers aren't experienced with RT yet

8:19 PM
I agree with that. The apps aren't terribly great. They aren't exactly hard to use on a desktop, but it isn't exactly "easier" either.

@Seth What was the difference? I didn't notice anything when I upgraded.

@Seth I am now. What's up?

@Undo Just thought of you when I saw this: softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/questions/167/…
Low hanging fruit :D

hmmm

8:21 PM
@Seth Yeah, I thought MD5 as soon as I saw that too. But then thought about how one would need to store the MD5s somewhere.
And soon got overwhelmed with all the things that would need to be done.

Ah

i.e. only the sidebar searches now
and you have to press <down arrow> to access the top result D:

I like the newer one because it allows me to search without opening metro, directly from the desktop

@Undo Simple bash script.. OSX does use bash right?

8:23 PM
@Seth Yes... it's built on Unix.

@3ventic ah, but I am just searching from start, now Super+S

I can still type my search and press enter to launch the first app found

That might make a difference.

Yeah, I suppose one could do that.

It might, true.

But that fruit keeps getting higher the more I think about how to grab it.
