@ewwhite multi threaded job description

I hope whoever wrote that kills themselves
It's actually a turnoff...
@ewwhite Of course it is, it's like an okcupid profile where she describes herself using D&D stats
00:50
geeky
@ewwhite They're so DevOps they've import threads; their ops.
@JoelESalas Did she include a Comeliness score?
01:07
Closing questions like a boss.

02:05
@ewwhite That's the scariest job description I've ever seen. That's like a four star General of Douchwaddery waging a shock and awe campaign against all that is good and righteous.
@ewwhite That honestly sounds exactly like my job description
My girlfriend just called her lady parts, her cobra basket.
@Cole And that goes in the pile labeled "Things I'm Not Sure I Need To Know".
=p
@WesleyDavid Definitely a label for not actually getting any sleep, and possibly a nasty case of not staying with one skill long enough to be employable later.
@Adrian I was like...what...what did you just say?
@Cole "The basket I get, but the cobra part... brb getting a venom kit."
02:11
@Cole Well, the 'not getting any sleep' part might still be accurate.
Hmm. I'm going to set up some VMs this week and see if I can spin up a little anycast demonstration on my home network.
I'd do it tonight but I have two interviews in the next two days.

Q: Unable to access Apache

CerinHow do you diagnose problems accessing an Apache site on Fedora? I deleted everything in my /var/log, then restarted rsyslog and httpd. Then cat /var/log/messages gives me: Jun 3 21:43:09 localhost kernel: imklog 5.8.10, log source = /proc/kmsg started. Jun 3 21:43:09 localhost rsyslogd: [ori...

DevOps.
@Adrian Was reading that. Also, lol'ing.
"I deleted everything in my /var/log" DevOps gold right there.
@WesleyDavid Mostly just shaking my head.
Really looking forward to getting back to work and working on real-world problems again.
I love my new client. I sent an invoice and it was paid in two hours.

Q: How to restart a Windows Azure Virtual Machine?

EduardoMy VM stopped responding and I could not find how to restart it. My account has no tecnical support.

You have GOT to be kidding me.
Heh. Was about to post that link myself.
02:48
Hmm.

Q: Cycling through outbound IP addresses with squid

instaA Squid server at work is being used to route requests through multiple external IP addresses. I'm doing the named-IP routing with the solution at my own question on Unix.SE. Another piece of the puzzle I need to add now is random selection if the custom header isn't set. I know there's a 'ran...

Isn't Squid the wrong solution for that problem? I'd think a routing protocol like OSPF would be better.
@Adrian Depends on the problem you're trying to solve
If you're bypassing ip-based rate limiting Squid could be a good way of doing it
@MarkHenderson In which case, the OP isn't really providing enough information to make those judgments. I dunno, I just really not a fan of making Layer 3 decisions at Layer 7 if they don't have to be done there.
@Adrian We do application-level routing with Microsoft TMG. Requests for certain domain names are routed through seperate gateways; but it's based solely on hostname
It takes a fuckload of RAM, but it works well
0
Q: The entire /usr/include directory is gone. How can I get a new copy of it?

MaxwellI am using Ubuntu 13.04 with a 32 bit AMD processor, if that helps.

The hits just keep on coming...

@MichaelHampton Now that's what I call devops, Vol. 14, available in cassette and compact disc!
Anyone here got experience with Selenium?
@MarkHenderson Nah, she's an ice princess.
@MarkHenderson The web interface testing tool? Yes.
@MichaelHampton Is it any good? And is it a pain to maintain?
We desperately need a HTML interface testing tool for regression testing and unit tests
@MarkHenderson It actually wasn't so bad for me, once I figured out the syntax, and the right DOM elements on the pages I was having it navigate.
03:04
Literally just had a shouting match with my boss about how much time we're wasting by manually checking things
@MarkHenderson Gut punch him.
@MichaelHampton Ok, cool. There are apparently some neat HTML GUI wrappers for it as well as a FireFox IDE to build the unit tests by pointing at things
Yes, as far as I know, Selenium is the go-to for automated testing of web pages.
@WesleyDavid Oh, I almost did. Don't get me started
@MichaelHampton Wicked, an endorsement from you is pretty much all I need to seal the deal
I might set it up tonight
@MarkHenderson I once wrote a plugin for SMF (and was paid a whole 40 bitcoins for it!) and I did the entire test suite with Selenium. It does pretty much everything.
03:06
@MarkHenderson How's the jogging and weight lifting and all that? Get ripped - scare the wits out of your boss when you show up looking like Dwayne Johnson.
@MarkHenderson Do I really want to know how you're going to position my endorsement to your boss?
@WesleyDavid Got the Nike+ Running app for my phone and a new pair of running shoes. Doing 5km in 30 mins. Fastest mile is 10:30, fastest 1km is 5:45
@MichaelHampton How much is a bitcoin worth in real money?
@MarkHenderson Right now, USD $123
@MichaelHampton No need, I get to make the final decision
@MarkHenderson Wow, that's awesome! Better than me.
03:09
He agreed in principal that we need to change the situation, I just need to do it
@WesleyDavid Yeah it's killing me though, some days if it's cold I only get to 3.5km/20 mins
@MichaelHampton I need to find people that will pay me in bitcoin.
@MarkHenderson What are your specs? Weight, bodyfat, etc.
@WesleyDavid Look at the main site...
@WesleyDavid Heavy, fat, don't know
Our bathroom scales shit themselves a month ago and I haven't measured my weight since
But my waist has dropped at least 5cm in radius
So, substantial
@MichaelHampton I've trawled some threads for jobs - keep getting people who want "You can sets up mah ubuntus for $25?"
@MarkHenderson What's your total waist?
And what were you in weight the last you checked?
@WesleyDavid I honestly don't know, but all my clothes are baggy
03:11
@WesleyDavid I can look at you funny for $25.
oh shit
@WesleyDavid Last check was 96.5kg, but it should be closer to 90 now
If I'm not around 90 I'll be surprised (and pissed)
@MarkHenderson 212 pounds, that's not insignificant for a guy 5'10 / 177cm
Unless you're really built like Dwayne JOhnson
Which we all know you're not. =P
@WesleyDavid Nope
And regardless of my physical attributes, I'm approximately one billion times fitter than I was 3 months ago (when I started)
@MichaelHampton When? Oh when? Do I get to punch people across standard TCP/IP???
03:13
@MarkHenderson Get back to fighting weight - you'll feel like a different person. And that's awesome that you've been at it for 3 months.
I remember my first run, it was 20 minutes of 60 seconds run/90 seconds walk and I was almost dead by the end of it
I'm signed up to a 5km fun run in a few weeks, that'll be my first chance to measure myself against other people
@ChrisS I'm hoping to have the first Internet-Draft ready soon...
@WesleyDavid I already do. I've forgotten how good it feels. I'm skinnier now than I was when I got married, which means I've undone 5 years of apathy. Another 5 years of apathy to go and I'll be back to what i was at highschool
I've given myself a total of 12 months to do it, so March 2014 I want to be back at highschool body/fat/etc
@MarkHenderson Speaking of, it's time to check this server's update status, and then hit the treadclimber thingy.
@WesleyDavid Enjoy
03:16
Goddam small print ruining ma life
@Jacob First rule of signing anything dude, make sure you read it
@MarkHenderson no not exactly
The last fine print I put on a contract was literally 3 lines (English version of Legalease):
1. This is being provided as-is.
2. You can't sue me for any reason.
3. If someone else sues me because of this service, you will indemnify me completely.
@ChrisS We didn't even have fine print for years and years, until of course one day someone sued us for their money back. They lost the fight (they were in the wrong), but it still cost us a fortune and got someone to write something up for us
03:20
The dude thought that because his business went bust he could get his money back from us. He bought our software, and then 2 months later he lost a major contract and had to lay off all his staff.
@Jacob Those things can often be worked around. My course required 3 separate instances of voluntary community service to graduate. I got exempted by writing a letter.
@Jacob Sounds like standard stuff.
@MarkHenderson Have @WesleyDavid send you his link to the Bay Area talk about contracts. He posted it up here awhile back.
I also accidentally enrolled in a class that had a prerequisite I didn't have. As soon as I realised I spoke to the lecturer, he just said "Don't worry about it; I'll sort it out"
My BSIS required 2 tracks of 3 sequential classes and a variety of base classes....
Oh. there it is. google.com/…
03:21
@MarkHenderson Fuck you, pay me. (And yes, I'm really, really leaving now...)
$ host cdn.sstatic.net
Host cdn.sstatic.net not found: 2(SERVFAIL)
@WesleyDavid gnite kitty head
@MarkHenderson I've never once seen a college system that automatically warns or prevents you from signing up for a class with pre-reqs... and it's been a notable problem a couple times that I can remember.
@MichaelHampton You must have IPv6
@ChrisS I do have IPv6.
It's just you:[jacob@Jacob-Bedroom-Desktop ~]$ nslookup cdn.sstatic.net
Server: 192.168.0.1

drop IPv6
03:23
Disable IPv6 and it will fix the problem =}
Fuck you, drop CloudFlare.
2
@WesleyDavid I read that one. You wrote that?
CloudFlare doesn't support IPv6 apparently.
CloudFlare is pretty shitty at this whole IPv6 thing. Makes me wonder where they'll be in five years.
@ChrisS Yeah my university had me fill in a paper form :p
03:23
Buy a real CDN?
No javascript alerts on one of those
@MarkHenderson not uni, secondary school
@MarkHenderson I started on Paper, but by the time I finished it was all electronic. Website interfaced with the S/360 system
I think they're still running that system too.
10
Q: Problems with CDN DNS

MikeyBI've been having trouble getting to cdn.sstatic.net all day. It's been crippling not to be able to play Stack Exchange! Chrome's resource panel was showing 'host not found' for cdn.sstatic.net. I think I've tracked it down to this: I have IPv6 connectivity and my machine is querying for AAAA r...

@ChrisS Mine does
03:34
Seeing SF without scripts or stylesheets is enlightening...
03:48
@ChrisS When Microsoft moved their Windows Store to CloudFlare, it was unavailable on IPv6 for weeks at a time.
@MichaelHampton don't use the store?
@Jacob I rarely do.
Ahh, reading that question again reminded me of the general stupidity level on SU. Gaaah.
@MichaelHampton What's IPv6?
04:12
> of course I dont know what Im doing, so all I can do is rewrite someone else's work until I know what Im doing ...
04:25
Ahh, CloudFlare is finally back.
04:38
answering AC questions on DIY is fun somehow
So, new Google Maps leaves a bit to be desired...
Japan, The Netherlands, India, Taipei, Germany and Italy are nowhere near my home
It recognises "home" as a location, and takes me to the right place, but then searches for pubs with the word "home" in the title
@MarkHenderson new things from google always suck
@MarkHenderson from this, I deduce you live in NSW, Oz.
@FalconMomot Googled pirtek fluid systems did you?
04:54
@MarkHenderson that's a little ambiguous, but there is other data in there which can narrow it down.

Q: Is air conditioner installation a DIY project?

Mark HendersonWe got a bargain on a brand new 6.2kw Split System Inverter Air Conditioner. The quotes we've received for installation are almost as much as the unit cost itself. Is this something I should be brave enough to attempt myself? It's a back-to-back installation.

@Jacob You brought that post up before
What of it?
Some one is going to die from advice about ACs on DIY
(not related) to that
@Jacob From electrocution or overheating?
@MarkHenderson Wherps, I was compiling a list of questions to show to my dad
@JoelESalas electrocution
05:00
@Jacob fwiw we just paid a company to come and install it
And the installation cost more than the unit itself
But we sold that apartment since then, so don't really care about it any more
@MarkHenderson My GF expects me to man up and help her install hers
needless to say, I'll be dead soon
2
@JoelESalas It doesn't work like that
@JoelESalas You're not allowed to gas them yourself here. The A/C gas is a restricted item
@MarkHenderson 50K EPA fine if a non-licensed person is sold gas or a precharged unit
There you go
05:03
@JoelESalas You shouldn't die ( you know a thing or 2 about electricity), but you don't have the required tools to do it. And if someone sees your vent freon you better have 50K waiting
2
A: Why is my air conditioner tripping the circuit breaker?

Tester101Disconnect the power Start by turning off the breaker, and pulling the serviceman disconnect, which will typically look something like this. This will insure no electricity is flowing to the condenser unit while you're working. Open the unit Next you'll want to disassemble the unit, to all...

Like the safety warning on that post is wrong
@Jacob Once you have the unit opened up, make sure to discharge the capacitors.
So... wanna elaborate on that a bit more?
@MarkHenderson There is more than one, and there are other places that hold power
How about you take a screwdriver over the two points. THat should discharge it pretty quick, right?
@MarkHenderson and you blow way past the ripple rating and blow it up, and you can buy those at joes hardware :)
@MarkHenderson Wouldn't have done anything anyway. I do this as a summer thing with my dad, and I know that was a bad compressor. It locks up goes to max current draw and breaker trip.
@MarkHenderson Nope, some other dude. Almost as cool as me though.
And with that, I depart.
smoke trap door smoke
05:18
@WesleyDavid You keep departing
Oh wait now you really are gone
@MarkHenderson Ich auch

Which bit of the log message wasn't obvious
@Iain snerk
I dunno - a site for professionals - hmm
Reminds me of my days on helldesk.
"What does it say on your screen?"
"It says 'the password has expired, change password'. What does that mean?"
"It means your password has expired and you need to change your password."
"Oh! Thanks!"
@Iain Better close that crap question, then.
06:55
Also I just voted off-topic on serverfault.com/questions/513019/… since the user explicitly says they don't have root privs.
@MichaelHampton there isn't a close reason for OP unable to understand perfectly good log message :(
@Iain but there are downvotes... does
@JennyD I downvoted it some time ago
@Iain Yeah, I went for the downvote-and-comment. Strangely, the comment turned out to be the answer...
@MichaelHampton which is kinda in the information that the log messages provided
07:00
One of my coworkers has brought his kid to work today. Kid is running around playing. In theory I like working at a place where it's possible to bring the kids; in practice I wish it didn't happen in the room where I work...
@JennyD :(
Ah well. Headfones and something distracting on the ipad. Could be worse.
07:30
Morning funbags
morning
@MichaelHampton shouldn't you be asleep by now?
@DennisKaarsemaker Quite possibly so.
07:46
just heard that next building whole IT dept. (known big company) is going on strike en masse.
@dawud what happened?
In Spain we have this collective agreements called "convenio" that regulate (more or less) the minimal conditions under which a worker is supposed to hire his/her manpower
Dan
Dan
Morning folks
those kind of agreements have to be renegotiated after its lifecycle (3-5 years)
we have those too
07:54
in the current conditions, big companies are pushing really hard to undermine all kind of rights
Dan
Dan
@JennyD Hehe, we have that too but we sort of hide them on the middle floor with the TV and XBox
Ahh, I finally found a good canonical question about hairpin NAT.
Dan
Dan
Did a 10km run yesterday in hiking boots and with a 5kg backpack. Oh man, it was tough
so this might be something important, meaning this could start a whole sectorial (<- does this word even exist?) strike
07:56
Or I have more spanish job applicants coming in soon - we've had quite a few, all citing the poor economy as a prime reason to GTFO of spain
there is also a so-called "minimum inter-professional salary", which, as of now, is the awesome amount of 600€
just say the word and I'll be leaving the place also
the governor of the Spanish Central Bank wants to remove that minimum boundary
I mean, WTF, 600€?! And they want to remove it...
Dan
Dan
08:13
Facebook really needs to allow you see someones full profile when they request you as a friend
@Dan We don't have any place like that to put them
Dan
Dan
@JennyD Yeah, I can imagine that gets a little old. We get dogs, too, but I like that
@Dan Dogs are generally more quiet... About 20 years back I worked at a place that allowed me to bring my cats - I was in an LDR and driving from Gothenburg to Stockholm every Friday; if I'd've had to go home to fetch the cats first it would have added a couple of hours to the drive.
Dan
Dan
@JennyD I don't know how it'd work with cats - if I brought mine in she'd eventually spy and open door and be gone
@Dan I had an office that I could close the door to, and the door was glass so people saw they were there and were careful not to open and let them out. The staff there was really nice, some of them brought kitty treats on Fridays :-)
Dan
Dan
08:26
Aw, that is cool
It's easier at a small company, they were maybe 20 people there and fortunately nobody had allergies
Dan
Dan
:(
yeah
@dan why the boots and backpack ?
2
A: Clamav. WARNING: No clamd server appears to be available

Michael HamptonThe clamd server doesn't appear to be running. Try starting it.

Easiest rep. evar.
...that is quite depressing.
Dan
Dan
@Iain I've rather foolishly agreed to do a Para-10 run in September. 10 miles, cross country (Though on paths, just not paved) with boots and 15kg weight
@tombull89 Yes.
08:42
@tombull89 very
@Dan were you drunk at the time ?
Dan
Dan
@Iain Yes :(
@Dan we have a rule, anything agreed to after 10pm in a pub or when drunk is null and void
Dan
Dan
@Iain Haha - I'm relatively up for it. I mean, I don't intend to get any kind of realistic time. The real paras have to do it in under 1hr50. I managed the pace for that yesterday, but obviously it was only for 6 miles, with 5kg not 15
I started beginning answers with I read the documentation for you and it says... but I soon got bored of it
Dan
Dan
Though I don't think the weight got me that much, but the boots and backpack made it very hard to keep a pace
08:46
@Dan gotta start somewhere
Dan
Dan
@Iain Yeah, it should be fun. Hopefully the race adrenaline will help
08:58
"So... if I want to add a file to subversion do I put it in the directory with all the subversion files?"
Yes. WHERE BLOODY ELSE?
@JennyD thanks for answering the same to the port 80 guy - I walked away, as I'd linked to the documentation twice
@Iain I had to rewrite the comment twice before managing to not write "LEARN TO READ YOU IDJIT" or something of that variety.
I seem to be yelling a lot today. Must be a workday.
@JennyD with someone else's kids in the office too I'll bet :)
I have a lot of someone else's kids outside the office. Then again, being in a school...
09:11
@Iain Yes. But I've not yelled at the kid. Yet. So far keyboard yelling has sufficed.
Dan
Dan
Just get the child to answer some SF questions
@Dan Hm. He's school aged so presumably he is able to write at least as well as 90 % of the people asking questions...
@Dan It won't be that bad. The NEXT day on the other hand.... ;p
besides, "you're doing it wrong, try doing it right, also read the manual" doesn't need typing, jut cutting and pasting
Dan
Dan
@JourneymanGeek Haha, thats the truth
Just noticed it's a Sunday - think I'll be booking that Monday off!
09:16
@Dan: once did 33km, along a disused railway track. did the last 5km on sheer bloodymindedness. I had a bit of trouble getting out of bed the next day ;p
Dan
Dan
@JourneymanGeek Oof, as a run? I did a 50km hike a few years back and I felt that by the end!
Dan
Dan
Girl :P
it wasn't the distance tho, I did 24km in full battle order back in the day
it was the goddamned ballast
(loose gravel path, railway tracks, and sleepers that probably date back to before ww2 ;p)
Dan
Dan
:D
09:32
i'm in ur computer, syspreppin' ur machinez
(finally...)
eh, that was fun
/me fixed something that was broken by taking it apart, and putting it back together
THEN found an unrelated issue with its USB cable
which might be due to something else entirely...

2 hours later…
11:32
mornin
@Travis morning
hello all
hello!
@Dan do you recall a guy named simon hind by any chance?
Dan
Dan
@ColdT Not off the top of my head, should I?
11:41
possibly, someone that worked for RM
I have shutdown the remote centos server via /ect/passwd shutdown user.
now i cant able to login throgh ssh
how do i turn it on
Dan
Dan
@ColdT Internet Stalked and he wasn't there long, so I doubt our paths crossed
lol power of linkedin :)
Please help
Dan
Dan
@Ahsan I'm not with you - you shut down the server?
11:44
yes
Dan
Dan
So, it's now turned off, yeah?
yes
Dan
Dan
So....how would you ever be able to login to it?
Its not allowing me to SSH
Dan
Dan
Well, how would it if it's turned off?
11:45
I just.. uh.. nevermind, time to get some coffee
Our major site was running on it. now its also down
Dan
Dan
Sorry, I'm not following this at all.

You shutdown a server, which was running things, and now you're shocked that these things are no longer running?
4
yes
Dan
Dan
You need to get someone to turn on the server.
Yes, i want to know how do i turn it on
Dan
Dan
11:47
Power button is usually the best bet
server was hosted on aws ec32
on the control panel within aws?
I logged in to aws console panel, i ddint found any ec2 instance runnig more
but i found IP under elastic ip's section
where the instance has gone? or i dont have access to see this server's instance
?
the instance has been deleted
Dan
Dan
I've not done anything with EC2, I'm afraid. Are you the administrator - perhaps you need to ask them?
11:51
bangs head on the wall
i am not the administrator, they are in US
@Ahsan It is unlikely that anybody here can help you. You need to contact the administrator and/or EC2 support.
@Ahsan you need to asks your administrator to check settings
Also, please read the text just below "The Comms Room" in the top right corner here.
I have mailed him but i guess they are sleeping as its now 5:00 Am there
@JennyD Yes, i also think so, nobody is here to help me.
BTW thanks
11:54
We'll be upgrading our hadoop cluster to 10gbps to the server soon. Shiny new toys to break.
Good luck!
@Ahsan What type of instance was it? Depending on the settings, stopping (shutting down) an instance can terminate it. If you don't see an EBS volume you may be in trouble...
But yes, this channel isn't for live support :-)
@DennisKaarsemaker Oooh shiny!
@NathanC orly? What if it crashes?
(no EC2 experience)
@DennisKaarsemaker Kernel panics don't "stop" the instance. By default a stopped instance will stay around. It can however be set up to auto-terminate on stop.
Which is typical of auto-scaling setups, for example.
Spot instances are unique though ...if you shut them down, they go poof
yes, i saw the volume under EBS
11:56
@Ahsan If you have access you can spin up another instance with that volume. If you don't have access you'll have to wait.
If you don't know how to start an instance, wait. :-)
I built our auto-build system here, boot == build. And I made sure to put in at least 3 safeguars agains reboot == rebuild :)
'cause it's no fun to reboot for a kernel upgrade and then wait for a rebuild :)
I guess rather trying something i should wait
@NathanC My first SonicWall problem. When I try to log in to the console to it it just gives me the SSO authentication window so I can use the internet...
@Travis If you're using SSO auth then it's outside my knowledge ...we don't use that here so I can't mess with it :(
Maybe try authenticating then getting into the console?
12:04
I tried that. It just dumps me back to the login page
May have to log off and reauth to the domain
I love Government contracts! They had us register with a new system that pulled our legal entity name out of the D&B database...which put a comma after our business name... Now GSA is requiring us to submit a contract modification with 3 types of proof to add the comma to the name...
On the plane...
12:24
ahh hate FOI :@
12:43
Good morning
@Iain appears that way.
copy-pasta
Oh tigerdirect and your sales....
"sales"
Exactly. I get emails from tigerdirect/newegg daily ...but my wallet says no. :P
12:51
Me too son, me too.

The Flickr gallery is hilarious: flickr.com/groups/cloud-to-butt
@NathanC that one got me too.
12:55
I'm trying not to laugh outloud.
I lol'd
@tombull89 haha YES. I was just about to post that one.
@NathanC that one too
this one wins
12:59
I'm dying over here lol.
I'm totally 12 years old.
