@ewwhite That's the scariest job description I've ever seen. That's like a four star General of Douchwaddery waging a shock and awe campaign against all that is good and righteous.
@Cole And that goes in the pile labeled "Things I'm Not Sure I Need To Know".
=p
@WesleyDavid Definitely a label for not actually getting any sleep, and possibly a nasty case of not staying with one skill long enough to be employable later.
How do you diagnose problems accessing an Apache site on Fedora?
I deleted everything in my /var/log, then restarted rsyslog and httpd. Then cat /var/log/messages gives me:
Jun 3 21:43:09 localhost kernel: imklog 5.8.10, log source = /proc/kmsg started.
Jun 3 21:43:09 localhost rsyslogd: [ori...
A Squid server at work is being used to route requests through multiple external IP addresses. I'm doing the named-IP routing with the solution at my own question on Unix.SE. Another piece of the puzzle I need to add now is random selection if the custom header isn't set.
I know there's a 'ran...
@MarkHenderson In which case, the OP isn't really providing enough information to make those judgments. I dunno, I just really not a fan of making Layer 3 decisions at Layer 7 if they don't have to be done there.
@Adrian We do application-level routing with Microsoft TMG. Requests for certain domain names are routed through seperate gateways; but it's based solely on hostname
@MichaelHampton Ok, cool. There are apparently some neat HTML GUI wrappers for it as well as a FireFox IDE to build the unit tests by pointing at things
@MarkHenderson I once wrote a plugin for SMF (and was paid a whole 40 bitcoins for it!) and I did the entire test suite with Selenium. It does pretty much everything.
@MarkHenderson How's the jogging and weight lifting and all that? Get ripped - scare the wits out of your boss when you show up looking like Dwayne Johnson.
@WesleyDavid I already do. I've forgotten how good it feels. I'm skinnier now than I was when I got married, which means I've undone 5 years of apathy. Another 5 years of apathy to go and I'll be back to what i was at highschool
I've given myself a total of 12 months to do it, so March 2014 I want to be back at highschool body/fat/etc
The last fine print I put on a contract was literally 3 lines (English version of Legalease): 1. This is being provided as-is. 2. You can't sue me for any reason. 3. If someone else sues me because of this service, you will indemnify me completely.
@ChrisS We didn't even have fine print for years and years, until of course one day someone sued us for their money back. They lost the fight (they were in the wrong), but it still cost us a fortune and got someone to write something up for us
The dude thought that because his business went bust he could get his money back from us. He bought our software, and then 2 months later he lost a major contract and had to lay off all his staff.
@Jacob Those things can often be worked around. My course required 3 separate instances of voluntary community service to graduate. I got exempted by writing a letter.
I also accidentally enrolled in a class that had a prerequisite I didn't have. As soon as I realised I spoke to the lecturer, he just said "Don't worry about it; I'll sort it out"
@MarkHenderson I've never once seen a college system that automatically warns or prevents you from signing up for a class with pre-reqs... and it's been a notable problem a couple times that I can remember.
I've been having trouble getting to cdn.sstatic.net all day. It's been crippling not to be able to play Stack Exchange!
Chrome's resource panel was showing 'host not found' for cdn.sstatic.net.
I think I've tracked it down to this:
I have IPv6 connectivity and my machine is querying for AAAA r...
We got a bargain on a brand new 6.2kw Split System Inverter Air Conditioner.
The quotes we've received for installation are almost as much as the unit cost itself.
Is this something I should be brave enough to attempt myself? It's a back-to-back installation.
@JoelESalas You shouldn't die ( you know a thing or 2 about electricity), but you don't have the required tools to do it. And if someone sees your vent freon you better have 50K waiting
Disconnect the power
Start by turning off the breaker, and pulling the serviceman disconnect, which will typically look something like this.
This will insure no electricity is flowing to the condenser unit while you're working.
Open the unit
Next you'll want to disassemble the unit, to all...
@MarkHenderson and you blow way past the ripple rating and blow it up, and you can buy those at joes hardware :)
@MarkHenderson Wouldn't have done anything anyway. I do this as a summer thing with my dad, and I know that was a bad compressor. It locks up goes to max current draw and breaker trip.
Reminds me of my days on helldesk. "What does it say on your screen?" "It says 'the password has expired, change password'. What does that mean?" "It means your password has expired and you need to change your password." "Oh! Thanks!"
One of my coworkers has brought his kid to work today. Kid is running around playing. In theory I like working at a place where it's possible to bring the kids; in practice I wish it didn't happen in the room where I work...
In Spain we have this collective agreements called "convenio" that regulate (more or less) the minimal conditions under which a worker is supposed to hire his/her manpower
@Dan Dogs are generally more quiet... About 20 years back I worked at a place that allowed me to bring my cats - I was in an LDR and driving from Gothenburg to Stockholm every Friday; if I'd've had to go home to fetch the cats first it would have added a couple of hours to the drive.
@Dan I had an office that I could close the door to, and the door was glass so people saw they were there and were careful not to open and let them out. The staff there was really nice, some of them brought kitty treats on Fridays :-)
@Iain I've rather foolishly agreed to do a Para-10 run in September. 10 miles, cross country (Though on paths, just not paved) with boots and 15kg weight
@Iain Haha - I'm relatively up for it. I mean, I don't intend to get any kind of realistic time. The real paras have to do it in under 1hr50. I managed the pace for that yesterday, but obviously it was only for 6 miles, with 5kg not 15
@Dan: once did 33km, along a disused railway track. did the last 5km on sheer bloodymindedness. I had a bit of trouble getting out of bed the next day ;p
@Ahsan What type of instance was it? Depending on the settings, stopping (shutting down) an instance can terminate it. If you don't see an EBS volume you may be in trouble...
@DennisKaarsemaker Kernel panics don't "stop" the instance. By default a stopped instance will stay around. It can however be set up to auto-terminate on stop.
Which is typical of auto-scaling setups, for example.
Spot instances are unique though ...if you shut them down, they go poof
@NathanC My first SonicWall problem. When I try to log in to the console to it it just gives me the SSO authentication window so I can use the internet...
I tried that. It just dumps me back to the login page
May have to log off and reauth to the domain
I love Government contracts! They had us register with a new system that pulled our legal entity name out of the D&B database...which put a comma after our business name... Now GSA is requiring us to submit a contract modification with 3 types of proof to add the comma to the name...
Finished building my image for the staff laptops. ON GODDAM WINDOWS 7 PROFESSIONAL not ENTERPRISE. Why do we even have Professional on our WDS server?!
I see on this question (How can I stop Linux from sending ICMP "Destination Unreachable" responses?) that there was a lot of discussion pointing to the fact that you shouldn't turn off ICMP unreachable messages. I am wondering why and when you should? I too want to know how to do it. I know it br...
