todays been super un productive =/
sharepoint sucks, microsoft sucks for making it, company sucks for wanting to use it, I suck for not being an expert in it yet
00:55
@voretaq7 I'm setting up postgres, is this awesome [y/y]
I kinda want to run for mod election for the swag
but I don't actually want to win
@MDMarra Baha what swag
If you wanted swag you should have interviewed & got that job at FC and then run away with all their merch and equipment
I got a tshirt last time I ran
@MDMarra Seriously? I've got two t-shirts and a pen - but I got them all before I became mod I think

Q: Best way to profile Unicorn workers?

user167019I'm trying to get a better picture of what my Unicorn workers are doing. Are they blocked on calls to other services for a significant portion of their cycles? Are they free most of the time? The sampling-based profiling referred to in this answer is exactly what I would like to do, but what i...

^ I read that as "best way to profile union workers" and immediately thought "You don't - they will smash you face with a steel pole"
2
01:14
@MarkHenderson Heh, that's exactly how I read that.
anyone else use MDM?
Hey Windows guys, XP can do up to 2TB partitions, right?
@MDMarra No fair! I think all I got was a few stickers.
Actually, you probably didn't get the shirt for the election, all the "new" sites (all the Area 51's) got t-shirts for the highest rep people, maybe the classic trilogy sites also got them?
@MichaelHampton I set up puppetdb backed by postgres, it still doesn't seem to be caching anything
02:02
lkjgoygi
@Ward Back in the SF early days (about a year in, maybe?), the first page or two of high rep users got t-shirts and stickers.
@freiheit Yeah, that's what I thought. I got a shirt, an apron, and some pens for being towards the top of cooking.SE, and I was pretty sure there was something similar for SF.
Stupid cat typing again.
@Ward They should have sent us all a Nexus chassis
@Adrian Your cat types better than @WesleyDavid. Maybe you can get it to respond to some craigslist ads for bikes...
02:09
@MarkHenderson You don't need work stuff. They should mail all the SF mods a selection of really nice booze
upworthy.com/… <-- Worth a watch, though mostly for Americans
2
I thought there were monthly mod parties where SE pays for hookers and blow?
@freiheit Sell the Nexus and buy a case of Dom Perignon or something
I go for value over content every time
@MarkHenderson I wonder how much a barrel of Bruichladdich costs...
@Ward Did you make it to the "finals" of the last election?
02:21
@MDMarra Apparently - when you go to the previous election page, it says there were 14 candidates, the top 10 move on... it only shows 10 people and I'm one of them, which matches what I recall, I think I was a vote or two ahead of @freiheit
@Ward I believe we tied, but the tiebreaker was who nominated first.
@freiheit sounds right
I don't need any blow, but I wouldn't mind a T-shirt and hookers.
That's not so much an XP restriction as a partition table restriction
Yeah, I don't think XP will do GPT... ever.
02:30
@ewwhite FUSE! FUSE! FUSE doesn't count :(
@MichaelHampton What are you going to do with crocheters?
BZZZZT!
@MikeyB Thanks, I was thinking so, but wasn't sure. Building a virtualization host, and I've got more video on my XP box than I thought.
@MichaelHampton not on 32-bit at least
why does the SF election have to have a "primary" phase? will there be an "electoral college", too?
02:38
@Andrew But no Supreme Court. =)
@Andrew 'MURICAH
@Ward huh. Well I dunno then. Pretty sure that's where one of my SE/SF shirts came from
It annoyed me too, but it's a good way of getting > 10 candidates down to 10
I wasn't on the front page when they did the giveaway before
Are we even going to have more than 10 candidates?
02:39
last year there were
actually, every year there have been
@MDMarra 14 last year
I've got a strange question: You can't date people at your workplace. You can't date people near where you live, and you wouldn't want to date the people who go to bars... So, who do you date then? The 20 yo in me is showing ;)
@KevinSoviero Church
Internet
Two great pickup joints
Oh, I'm 3 upvotes away from a gold badge!
@MarkHenderson I don't go to church, and even if I did, that's a no-no as well.
02:42
@KevinSoviero I once dated a girl I sat next to on a train. Super stalker style
Except she turned out to be a pyscho
Ok, I've added public transport to the "do not" list, anything else? ;)
I met my wife on the internet, but not through a dating site - through these thigns called "blogs" that people used before facebook
@KevinSoviero why not near where you live?
@Andrew Cos then you end up like Cole and your ex-girlfriend lives down the street and you see them all the time
@KevinSoviero You know, if you put too many things on the "do not" list, you're excluding all the age appropriate women within a 50 mile radius...
02:44
@Andrew For the same reason as everything else: you're likely to run into them after you break up.
@freiheit Thus, my problem.
Logic supersedes instinct, and the former is killing my social life!
@KevinSoviero (a) you can't date people you work directly with, or who are above or below you in the hierarchy. If you work someplace with a lot of employees, somebody in a totally different department is fine. (b) Ok, don't date your roommate, and maybe not the same side of the same block, but don't be silly about this. (c) bars (especially the less meat-market type ones) and trains/buses are fine, but you have to use some sense.
Wow, i can't remember the last time I had to flag "not welcome in our community".
@MichaelHampton Where'd you flag that?
-2
A: OpenBSD Apache version 1.3.29?

George W.DAS NIGGUH BE RIGHT! LEEG BRO? LOL?

@MichaelHampton WTF!? No, hire him to replace /dev/random
02:51
No, he's not random, but he could do a good job of being /dev/stupid ... if such a thing were ever necessary.
FUCKING MOTHERFUCKER
Linked to harcore porn in a tinyurl
Just as well i saw my browser title change to "pornhub" FUCK SHIT CTRL+W
@MarkHenderson Where are you?
(I tried to preview the URL with a + on the end of the link but whatever shortner he used doesn't support that method)
Yeah, I just went to check it, found myself on pornhub, and then flagged the post.
(10k only)
@KevinSoviero At work
02:53
@MarkHenderson At 10pm? What timezone are you?
@MarkHenderson I'm not quite sure about that question either...
or rather, the user who asked it.
@KevinSoviero He's upside down
@KevinSoviero GMT+10
@MichaelHampton Yeah seems a bit suss
That means it's... 12.54?
@MichaelHampton Yep
02:57
@MarkHenderson Someone needs more than a slap on the wrist...
@MarkHenderson Better break out the heavy artillery now...
The weird part is, I just went browsing through OpenBSD source, and sure enough, it really does contain httpd 1.3.29.
@MichaelHampton I've done all I can
I have emailed team@
This one seems, well, odd.

A: CentOS 5 in VirtualBox 4.1 shows 0 as disk free space

OlekI faced simiral problem. I needed to remove swap from the LogVol01 (swapoff -v /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01), then removed this Volume, rebooted and extended the space of LogVol00 mounted as /.

Perhaps should be a comment since the answer is very local to the user, but may be a common pre-set for RH boxen.
@Adrian Not at all. He gave 4 GB to / and 4 GB to swap.
@MichaelHampton que es?
@Adrian On EL5 systems, if you just accept the defaults in installation, LogVol00 is the root filesystem / and LogVol01 is swap.
03:08
@MichaelHampton It's been so long since I've dealt with a default EL5 that I don't recall the defaults anymore.
@Adrian That's OK, apparently neither did anyone else.
I gave the new user an upvote because he correctly identified the problem :)
03:19
gack, death to apple ecosystem lockin
iPhone 5: requires iTunes 10.7: requires MacOS 10.6.8
screw that, I'll use my Windows VM
(Can't upgrade 10.5.8 to 10.6, either - need to do a clean install, probably because it's dual-boot)
@Andrew I really don't know why everyone hates on Microsoft these days. Apple's stock is more valuable, their lockin is worse than Microsofts and they're busy turning OSX into IOS
@MarkHenderson not hating on microsoft per se, just I didn't allocate a lot of space for my windows VM... having an old macbook for iPhone Stuff was handy
@Andrew You bought an iPhone, didn't you know what you were getting into?
@MarkHenderson the macos / ios stuff started with the first release of ios, they started splitting out core functions from higher layers
@MichaelHampton company phone that "just works" with email & calender. not mine, someone elses.
android doesn't have a free caldav connector :(
@Andrew No not picking on you particularly, just commenting in general
03:26
@Andrew Ohh, company phone. In that case...make the company fix it!
@MarkHenderson oh I hate things that microsoft have done... non-standard features that they pretend are standard, when they're not because they violate common sense / RFCs / the laws of physics
@MarkHenderson I dunno. Their stuff worked like the cat's pajamas when I had it for 4 months at the last job. The Windows stuff was a royal pain.
Fuck the review audits. Some of the questions that are in there as good are obvious shit.
review is a trap
@MichaelHampton seriously how are you not a mod already?
@Andrew There has not been a moderator election since I joined Server Fault?
@Andrew He's been here less than a fucking year
Which is hard to believe
03:33
Yeah, it's true, I don't exist.
@MarkHenderson I've only been kicking around the room for 18 months. Whichfeels like it's been 3-4 years.
Makes sense though, the last 4-5 months feels like a couple lifetimes.
@MichaelHampton how long is your beard?
@Andrew Um, 5mm or so?
@MichaelHampton YOU USED METRIC
YAY FOR YOU
@MarkHenderson What's wrong with metric?
03:44
You have restored my faith in the "free world"
@MichaelHampton Nothing. Everything is right with metric
I was expecting you to say your beard was 1/48th of an inch or something
"I enjoy long moonlit walks on the beach, nginx, and IPv6."
Not "perl, and pipes"?
@Andrew Meh, the big money in the next few years is going to be in emergency IPv6 rollouts.
@MarkHenderson have you seen the video @ChrisS linked? scary stuff, that's what the occupy movement needed a year ago
I hate going shopping for tools because at Bunnings (huge hardware chain here) they have everything in metric and imperial, and the stuff I own has a mix of both, so I need a 3/16th spanner AND a 5mm spanner
@Andrew Nope
I think the top 1% here is Clive Palmer / Gina whatsherkids
03:46
@MarkHenderson I'll remind you that the Imperial measurements came from the bloody British empire!
@MichaelHampton yeah well they're dicks
@MarkHenderson Yeah, I know. We had to run them off with muskets a while back.
@MichaelHampton I have played Assassins Creed III, thus I am an official scholar on the revolution
They're up to III now?
@MichaelHampton Yeah. It was shit
03:47
I never played I and II.
I won't be buying IV until it's $5 on steam
@MichaelHampton so you didn't miss 2 1/2, 2 3/4 then
I just kept getting free copies bundled with video cards.
I gave them all away.
03:49
I haven't finished AC1 yet, got bored...
@Andrew AC1 was a poor start to the franchise because it was so repetitive
#2 was much much much much much much much better
does it have loot?
not sure where this fits....

Q: Why does Windows have such a high context switching frequency

MichaelA while back, I did some playing around with new Win2008 virtual machine and found some serious concerns. The server is Dell T610. 16gig, 4 core, 8 logical, 2.4ghz Xeon, 5600 series. @Andrew The "occupy" movement needed a "better". They were useless complainers, they identified all the problems and zero solutions.
@Andrew He needs to come back and edit the question, otherwise it's NARQ
@Andrew This question seems fine.
@Andrew And I think it's perfectly reasonable for a sysadmin to share his scripts on github, however...
04:04
I'm not exactly the biggest fan of that video either, as it discusses wealth (the amount of "money" you have) rather than disposable income (income less staying alive expenses). I'm really not concerned with who owns the factory, etc - I'm concerned with the distribution of the money stream.
@MichaelHampton on-topic for us?
@MichaelHampton problem with github (a webapp) though?
@Andrew More or less. It boils down to performance tuning your server, or at least the VM.
@Andrew Yeah, it's kind of borderline, but I think webapps would reject it.
@MichaelHampton can you set an OS scheduler in Windows?
@Andrew I was reading one of the related posts, which had an answer about how to tune it. It would possibly be useful for him, but wasn't close enough to his question so I didn't mark it as a dupe.
> You've earned the "Electorate" badge. See your profile.
@ChrisS I'm concerned with 1. bonuses for failure, 2. share price vs. social equity / outcomes for customers, 3. pay vs. value to society
does that sound like a meritocracy?
what's the whole US fear of "socialism" thing about anyway?
04:10
Not starving.
@Andrew Because a great many of the socialists here are of the bolshevist variety.
Quite a few that I've spoken with think the world population should be crashed down to about 100 million by whatever means necessary.
@Adrian so the "raving nutter" sort

Q: Are SSD drives as reliable as mechanical drives (2013)

MattSSD drives have been around for several years now. But the issue of reliability still comes up. I guess this is a follow up from this question posted a 4 years ago, and last updated in 2011. It's now 2013, has much changed? Reliability of ssd drives

Shouldn't a question with out of date answers be bountied instead of reposted?
@Andrew Plenty of room for raving nutters on both ends of the spectrum.
@MichaelHampton Shouldn't it be nuked as "too localised"?
04:13
@Andrew Lots-o-people can't tell the difference between socialism and communism. Heck, I've met educated people who argue they're the same thing...
@ChrisS definitions of "educated" vary widely.
@Adrian I downloaded and watched the old version of "The Lathe of Heaven" last night (which has 7 billion out of 8 billion people dying off)... it's still good, but quite dated.
The Lathe of Heaven is a 1979 film (released in 1980) based on the 1971 science fiction novel The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. Le Guin. It was produced in 1979 as part of New York City public television station WNET's Experimental TV Lab project, and directed by David Loxton and Fred Barzyk. Le Guin, by her own account, was involved in the casting, script planning, re-writing, and filming of the production. The film stars Bruce Davison as protagonist George Orr, Kevin Conway as Dr. William Haber, and Margaret Avery as lawyer Heather LeLache. Plot In Portland, Oregon in the near future,...
@Andrew I suppose, but the US is mostly a socialism right now, and if you had most people describe (in loose terms) their ideal economy it would certainly most closely fit socialism.
ooh, ursula le guin.
It's frightening how long it's been since it came out/I first saw it...
04:15
@ChrisS the whole "healthcare is socialism" thing was quite scary, coming from a country where we have functioning public healthcare
@Andrew Socialized healthcare if like the rest of the economy. The bad isn't so much, and the good isn't the best - but the vast for the vast majority it's what they want. Capitalistic healthcare has wider extremes. The US has some of the best doctors (but only the top 1% can afford them) and about 1/2 of people get no healthcare.
We bitch about our system, but overall it's not bad. It's nice not to have to worry about cancer drugs that cost ~$50,000 (for a course of treatment) or immune system boosting drugs that cost ~$10,000, for example.
04:32
@Ward Interesting. have not seen that movie nor read the book.
@Andrew The problem here is that we effectively have two countries occupying the same area. The city culture is so radically different from the rural culture that they cannot understand one another anymore.
@Ward My mother gets Medicare coverage that covers her US$100k/year meds. It's not like we don't have it here at all, but it's a pain in the ass and many people don't qualify.
@Adrian secede & take the resources & military
@Adrian And "America" that many (most?) people think of as the ideal is the rural/farming/growing one that's long gone.
it would work.
CASCADIA!
Cascadia is the name of a bioregion and proposed country located within the western region of North America. Potential boundaries differ, with some drawn along existing political state and provincial lines, and others drawn along larger ecological, cultural, and economic boundaries. The nation would consist of British Columbia, Canada, along with Oregon, Washington, and portions of other states from the United States. At its maximum extent Cascadia would extend from coastal Southeast Alaska to the north, extending into Northern California in the south, and inland to include parts of the...
@Ward Yes, but the people are frequently still there. And they're not so happy about what's getting rammed down their throats. Fact of the matter is, there's so little real difference in the two parties we have when it comes down to the daily issues that it requires a complicit media with a 24/7 news cycle to keep the two groups polarized.
Not to mention one of the most horrid "education" systems in the Western world.
04:42
@Adrian Ugh, yeah. I think ours is better, but it has some of the same issues... which is part of why our kid's in a Catholic school.
54-40 or Fight!
@Ward I would if I could afford it. They spend 40% of their school year doing practice tests for their annual standardized testing instead of working on actually learning stuff. It's purely ridiculous.
Bought a bunch of system parts today. Bought some 'green' drives in a moment of weakness though and need to take them back and order some proper WD Black drives.
04:59
@Ward same political / media issues here
05:40
@Iain Is it you?
06:07
@Ward, yes I'm standing down. The SF that we have today is not the one I was passionate about. There are far too many low quality posts from people who would not readily consider themselves sysadmins let alone pro sysadmins.
I find myself getting both angry and sad because of this. I'm naturally not either so the best thing for me is to step back.
06:26
I was afraid of that... Damn.
Not that I'm likely to replace you, but I'm not sure I'd want to.

@iain sorry to hear you're standing down. You've been a damn good mod for this place - and I agree with your worries about what direction we're going in, though I dunno what to do about it. Sad thing is, we've still got a long place to fall before anywhere else is better.

@RobM @Iain D:
on an unrelated note, I hate exchange DRs. But finally finished recovering ours at 10pm last night.
08:44
Morning all
@RobM What happened to your exchange?
@Dan how do you guys manage automation for user account creation from your MIS systems?
Dan
Dan
@ColdT Not our bag, mate, but most places I've seen do it manually
hmm that's got to be painful doing it manually
@ColdT csv import to Powershell?
Not that we're doing that ourselves, yet, but it's on the cards.
@SmallClanger that's the way I plan to do it, along with a scheduled task
Dan
Dan
08:54
@ColdT Most places just export to CSV and sort it that way. In my experience, schools don't have that many staff/students changing through the year to make it a hardship
We've got a script for use creation, but mostly because it takes care of a few ancilliary jobs at the same time. Never had to to bulk creation, but that's the nice thing about Powershell, you can just throw a CSV at it.
@Iain You're supposed to have fun, this being pro bono and all.. I totally understand your decision. Maybe you'll get more time to answer questions again :)
@SmallClanger very odd - a bug with our backup system's agent. It claimed to be backing stuff up properly but it wasn't, causing the log file drive to fill up for one of our datastores

The odd part is that it was, for some of the failed backups at least, reporting success to both us and exchange, so *some* of the transaction logs got purged.
To say I'm unhappy with the backup system right now would be an understatement.
@RobM Ouch. and the tlogs fill up so fast as well.
@RobM that doesn't sound like fun at all
09:07
@RobM You should look into using operations manager.. it would have alerted you before it's too late
@pauska Does SCOM cover that kind of stuff?
Dan
Dan
09:22
@MarkHenderson Can't believe you took a bollocking for that comment!
@Dan o.O
@pauska yep
People need to get a refund on where they bought our info from...I have no buying power whatsoever. So when I get a call saying "I understand you're the right person to speak to regarding IT Purchasing?" I lol mentally and give them the bad news.
We've got monitoring tools - the fill-up happened over the course of the weekend
Dan
Dan
@RobM And where the hell were you when this was happening, mmm?
Sounds like somebody isn't doing enough hours in the office
09:29
I've adjusted the thresholds on them to try and give us more warning, but the main issue is that the damn backup agent is telling lies to exchange about the backups.
@dan feet up, giving no fucks ;-) though I did work to 10pm last night on it

@ColdT ward spends a lot of time voting rather than answering questions and chatting
@Dan at least
Dan
Dan
@Iain In a way, I wish he were just a normal troll but it's gone on for so long that I think he actually has something wrong
@Iain that is interesting to know. Any way of getting these stats up on the election page?

10:25
I always wonder why someone wants to be a mod. And if they're not already participating in the site then I wonder how committed they will be. From modding in other places I know that being a mod is different from being any other kind of participant, but at least someone who's already deeply involved and interested in the mechanics of the site and its mission is in the right reason already.
@ColdT clicky linky on the page elections.stackexchange.com/#serverfault
@Iain was it about Evan that Mark got a bollocking for?
@TomO'Connor the college canteen has pickled onion monster munch <3
Because I would be...dissapointed.
@Dan genen the elbow room he gets I sometimes wonder if he's the alter ego of someone hight up in SE
10:27
@RobM Awesome.
Dan
Dan
@Iain If it were true, I'd worry for them as much as the alter ego!
@tombull89 It was the comment he made in chat ages ago about how he'd have banned Evan "quicker than he ejaculates into a whore" or something. Apparently the higher ups reprimanded him
Well... its not like we don't have our own...er... sockpuppets... here in SF chat
@Dan I lol'd.
@Dan Bwahaha.

Confusingly, there was a "Dan" in that chat. I was reading thinking "Why would I have asked that?"
Whatever happened to Ben Pilbrow?
Good question :-( Another good bloke that don't stop by no more.
10:37
Can we summon him back?
Look into a mirror and say @benpilbrow @benpilbrow @benpilbrow and he shall appear?
@TomO'Connor I think he lost interest after the last election
We've lost Ben, HopelessNoob and Johnny G. Any bets for who's next?
@tombull89 Where'd HN go?
Dan
Dan
Yeah, I'm sad about HN

@TomO'Connor He could be quite abrasive, though. He didn't like my British left leaning views too much, either

@tombull89 warner, womble and others
@Dan I always took what he said with a pinch of salt, as his surname was noob.
Dan
Dan
@TomO'Connor Haha, he was alright
@Dan he was better once I put him on ignore :)

Dan
@Iain You do have a trigger happy ignore button, though!
This isn't the right way to do this, is it?

Q: Windows 8 - Firewall Issues from Command Line

Brendan ThompsonI created the following script basically to block absolutely everything and only allow through what I want, however it's not allowing through what I like in regards to the internet. Can anyone see an issue with my rules? Currently they are pretty generic. @ECHO OFF ECHO =======================...

10:47
@Dan I just get fed up of trying to parse out all swearing which, lets face it, doesn't add any value to what's being said so it's easier to plonk people and get on with it
Dan
Dan
It's unusual.
@Iain That's fair enough, though it'd be hypocritical of me to completely agree :$
@Dan I swear myself - I think I'm quite good at it but every sentence (especially when typing) doesn't need to be laced with it.
@Iain The important thing is knowing words which are either rude, but from a bygone age, or not rude, but should be.
like moist.
@TomO'Connor flagging as "offensive", how dare you!

@TomO'Connor I may have a go at reinstating "Bristols" as a euphemism for breasts

Bristol Cities.
@Ladadadada obviously not because he would have shirly
@Dan Breasts don't need euphemisms. You're just being a dick.
That was probably funnier in my head than in the chat.
@JennyD Austin Powers coined the most amusing one, "Dirty Pillows"
Which I maintain, if I ever open a laundrette, that's what I'm calling it.

@JennyD Sorry if I've offended you, it's an old British phrase
@TomO'Connor Mine aren't dirty, I do shower occasionally!
@Dan I was trying (and failing) to be funny. I am not offended by breasts.
@JennyD It would be most unfortunate to be offended by ones own boobs.
Dan
Dan
@JennyD Ah, yes, I see it now!
(horay for living it a place called Bristol)
@TomO'Connor Indeed. Plus my girlfriend wouldn't be happy about it either

Hee.
also a fair point
I should go and get on with some real work, instead of talking about boobs all day. I'm so unqualified for this field.
@TomO'Connor At least there is plenty of study material on the internet.
oooh electrical shortout in some of our external CCTV posts. What fun.
Dan
Dan
@RobM It's not fun until there is fire
10:59
Can't have too much study material for some subjects, if you ask me.

Dan
@RobM I'm inclined to agree, but Jane doesn't seem to see my point of view
