I have a recently-built Windows Server 2008 R2 system whose Windows Updates started failing suddenly. While I am presented an error code 80072F76, none of the automatic fixes seem to work.
What's the best method to troubleshoot this? General internet access works as normal.
@freiheit Not usually a problem in Seattle. What sucked was trying to get used to temps in mid-40s(5C) when I was working in Orlando one week out of every three with their gorgeous winter weather.

@ewwhite that's nearly happened to me a few times on Downtown's streets. The local bicyclists frequently run red lights while making a right hand turn and mis-time the traffic ( or don't care).

@ewwhite I know. Looks pretty nasty, but looked like the injuries were mostly scrapes, bruises and wheels. Skeletons and frames looked like they might all be ok...
@ewwhite Sort of. The intersections in that part of town are really tight since it's the historic district, but there's not a whole lot of excuse for blowing off a red light at 15mph into rush-hour traffic regardless of vehicle choice.
@freiheit Naw, this was on my dirt bike. If I was in my truck, her peripheral vision would've told her that traffic was coming at her. Was an interesting reminder for me that not seeing motorcycles had nothing to do with cars/trucks but everything to do with assumptions and expectations.
@Adrian Bigger cc engines hurt my ears more. Especially if somebody with a big chopper-style bike pulls up beside me (on my bicycle) at a stop light and then speeds off when it turns green
@freiheit Yeah, the big noisy things mostly aren't my style. I do have a big noisy sportbike, but that one's getting taken apart and being rebuilt with a stock exhaust on it.
@freiheit That's mostly the geometry of the motor and the timing of the firing impulses. They're still running with almost no baffles in them. Inline 4s are much easier on the ears in that respect.
@freiheit Ah, that stuff. Yeah, those are custom exhausts. The sportbike ones are designed so that you can take the baffling "spud" out and run it in "race only" configuration.
Storage question... I have 14 x 15k RPM 146GB disks. I have a server that can accommodate 16 disks and a shelf that can do 25 disks. I need to maximize storage space, but still allow expansion. Would you run RAID 5? RAID 6? RAID 5+0?

@voretaq7 We've had ok luck with a combination of getting them from the CS dept or stealing the good interns from the helpdesk (workstation) department...
@voretaq7 Sadly, while interns are expendable, well-trained interns are hard to get. It takes a good 3-6 months for them to have just the right amount of fear of the lash. Too much fear and they're cowering instead of working, too little fear and they're facebooking instead of working...
@ewwhite Unless you know you have a ton of random writes and 1+0 would give you enough capacity... (Hard to predict with VMs because there's going to be a lot of different workloads)

@MarkHenderson seems like a step that was implied to me, though it doesn't hurt to add it. It might have made more sense to place the ssh reload directly after the SSH configuration change.
@freiheit That seems a bit exaggerated. I know why it isn't working. It isn't working because WIFI sucks. It is so critical these days why hasn't anyone beaten the guys at the FCC over the head enough so they will cough up a big chunk of bandwidth on better frequencies.
@WesleyDavid We were going to buy their TS screen recording software, but I couldn't even get it to work on the free trial and their support were, well, not great
So we ditched the idea and just decided to beat users into submission if they did the wrong thing. Cheaper and more effective.

There's a big boxy abomination on the lakefront where he keeps a bunch of his toys. @Adrian I dunno. I want to hand over some money and get a solution that works. So far they've delivered that for us for almost 10 years, so that works for me. I give you money, you give me stuff. Done.
@MarkHenderson Nothing wrong with that. And I don't have problems judging their technology objectively either. But when so many of my acquaintances get mysteriously booted just months before their options vest? It's tough to respect the upper management much.
Meh. Maybe it's just the way things are done now, but I don't have to like the current business ethos of screwing everyone out of anything you can get your hands on.
@freiheit I like small yachts, like a 40-footer or something. I can understand that because it's a leisurely way of pootling around for an afternoon not using any energy (just wind power), and only the hardcore do big journeys in them

And they have what's actually a fucking awesome (but way too expensive) firewall in TMG, but they leave it without IPv6 support, then promise it in the next update, and then dump the entire product line anyway
@MarkHenderson Yeah. And I recall a discussion with a friend about Metro & 2012. 2012 ties so deeply into the APIs available in Win8 that they were quite literally forced into using Metro for 2012.
