Wattup Working Peeps?

@MDMarra windows update... um...
1
Q: Windows could not search for new updates?

ewwhiteI have a recently-built Windows Server 2008 R2 system whose Windows Updates started failing suddenly. While I am presented an error code 80072F76, none of the automatic fixes seem to work. What's the best method to troubleshoot this? General internet access works as normal.

@Adrian The temperature. Ugh

@MDMarra This particular produce company neeeeeeeeds WSUS.

Anybody watching snooker?

@freiheit Not usually a problem in Seattle. What sucked was trying to get used to temps in mid-40s(5C) when I was working in Orlando one week out of every three with their gorgeous winter weather.
@DennisKaarsemaker Planning out upgrades to my home network to get my old 500cc Moto GrandPrix races to stream to my Xbox.

8:07 PM
@ewwhite Damn, and I went to all the trouble to research an answer before I saw you already answered your own question.

@MichaelHampton So post it and get mo' upvotes?

@Adrian Haha, OK.

@ewwhite He's busy with his waifu, I'll do it!
I've got fuckall to do for a week

@MichaelHampton Sorry... it ust means that @MDMarra is slackin'. This is a site that he's servicing!
Bikers versus cyclists...

@JoelESalas Just be Zen about it, man. There's weeks where it's slow and there's weeks where you don't get to sleep. Just breathe and focus.

8:09 PM
@MDMarra congratulations man!

@Adrian I literally can't relax

@ewwhite that's nearly happened to me a few times on Downtown's streets. The local bicyclists frequently run red lights while making a right hand turn and mis-time the traffic ( or don't care).

@ewwhite Luckily, the motorcyclist cushioned the bicyclists' falls...

@JoelESalas Used to be that way when I worked for IBM. I hear ya. Ended up taking another job and working on Yoga and meditation.

A: Windows could not search for new updates?

Michael HamptonThe general place to start troubleshooting this error is KB836941. Following the steps in this KB article may resolve the problem, but probably won't, since the article indicates that 0x80072F76 corresponds to an API error ERROR_WINHTTP_HEADER_NOT_FOUND. This error, it turns out, means that there...

8:13 PM
@freiheit Awful... broken rims and such

That's what I came up with, before I read your answer.

was it a blind corner or something?
@MichaelHampton yeah, bad admin blocking windows updates... and you understand why an admin would do that, right?

@ewwhite Because that's how you version lock ALL THE THINGS!

@ewwhite I know. Looks pretty nasty, but looked like the injuries were mostly scrapes, bruises and wheels. Skeletons and frames looked like they might all be ok...

@ewwhite Sort of. The intersections in that part of town are really tight since it's the historic district, but there's not a whole lot of excuse for blowing off a red light at 15mph into rush-hour traffic regardless of vehicle choice.

8:17 PM
@Adrian It didn't work. No upvotes. Bah!

The young "lady" had some very choice words for me until I stopped her at the next light and pointed out that she'd been 3' from my front wheel.

@Adrian Damn you and your two ton death machine!

what the shit.
my clients google adword budget is
205,400 a day

@Adrian Meditation has worked wonders for me.

@freiheit Naw, this was on my dirt bike. If I was in my truck, her peripheral vision would've told her that traffic was coming at her. Was an interesting reminder for me that not seeing motorcycles had nothing to do with cars/trucks but everything to do with assumptions and expectations.

8:23 PM
@mossy Click click click!

@freiheit And oddly, bicyclists are much more courteous to me when I'm on my 200cc "maxi-scooter" than when I'm on any of my motorcycles.

It's distracting me.
I feel like i should get into marketing.

@mossy Oh please don't. You could do something useful with your life!

205,400 a day!

@Adrian Bigger cc engines hurt my ears more. Especially if somebody with a big chopper-style bike pulls up beside me (on my bicycle) at a stop light and then speeds off when it turns green
@mossy impressions? clicks? dollars?

8:25 PM
Dollars.
sorry.

@mossy You want a piece of that action, eh?

@freiheit Yeah, the big noisy things mostly aren't my style. I do have a big noisy sportbike, but that one's getting taken apart and being rebuilt with a stock exhaust on it.

@mossy So they're spending $75million a year on google adwords advertising? That's.. uhm... a lot of money...

:|

@mossy Run a web site on which their ads will be displayed. Get a zillion visitors. Collect massive check from Google.

8:27 PM
@Adrian The sportbikes seem more likely to have a working muffler (but still too loud when 5 or 6 feet away)

Or i could go on a clicking spree and tell him i wont stop until he gives me money.

@DennisKaarsemaker Any news on that position in Seattle?

@mossy Google will just filter out your invalid clicks and nobody will notice.

yeahyeah

@freiheit That's mostly the geometry of the motor and the timing of the firing impulses. They're still running with almost no baffles in them. Inline 4s are much easier on the ears in that respect.

8:29 PM
@MichaelHampton Also, you'd wear out your mouse button before making a noticeable dent on their budget...

@freiheit Haha. Good point.

heh.

@mossy So the largest month I ever had with Google ads was $3000. I could do more if I put more time into it. It's certainly viable...

@Adrian I was under the impression that it was common for the semi-custom "I want to be in a biker gang" bikes to have intentionally loud exhausts...

@MichaelHampton nice. I honestly haven't used adwords much. I was shocked when I saw that number.
at first it thought it was profit. damn near fell out of my chair.

8:31 PM
@Adrian CV is on the hiring manager's desk. He promised me an answer on wednesday (tomorrow is national holiday)

@freiheit Ah, that stuff. Yeah, those are custom exhausts. The sportbike ones are designed so that you can take the baffling "spud" out and run it in "race only" configuration.

@mossy That is a rather shocking number. I'd be quite surprised if they were coming anywhere near that, then again I don't know who it is :)

Adwords is fun. $work spends a lot of money on it.

@DennisKaarsemaker Cool. Thanks. Seen some of the Bio's posted to the careers page. Seems like a really great group of people.

@Adrian Eric from the careers page is one of my drinking buddies :)

8:33 PM
I really should write more stuff about expensive hardware, and collect more ad revenues from you big spenders.

@DennisKaarsemaker Outstanding. =)

And im just over here trying to pay rent.
life sucks.

and then you die

Anyway.
how have yall' been?

@mossy mostly on vacation

8:38 PM
Oh, that's fun.

@mossy it was
anyone use shorewall ?

Storage question... I have 14 x 15k RPM 146GB disks. I have a server that can accommodate 16 disks and a shelf that can do 25 disks. I need to maximize storage space, but still allow expansion. Would you run RAID 5? RAID 6? RAID 5+0?

raid 6 or raid 5 with hot spare
5+0 is ridiculous. 5 or 1+0

RAID 6 with hot spare?

It's Hp gear, so I have P410 internally, expanders, a DL380 with all the slots... as well as a P812 and a D2700.

8:42 PM
6 or (5 with hot spare)
Damn you english. You're as bad as markdown.

@DennisKaarsemaker meh - I would rule out 5 honestly

the other issue is that I have 17 x 146GB 10k RPM disks... but they're broken... warranty time...

@voretaq7 1+0 is always my pick. I hate raid levels that use parity. But "maximizing storage space"

and then the 14 x 15k 146GB ... those are good.

I'd say 150GB drives is about the upper limit for R5 - if you're deploying something new and you can do R6? Go for it.
@DennisKaarsemaker I don't mind R6 if you need to maximize storage space
I don't mind R5 either up until about 146/150GB

8:44 PM
this is to replace my Sun x4540... I need something with lower power, but about 1.5TB of good storage

Depends how large of a RAID set you're making. I wouldn't R5 14 disks (or 25)

It's not quite as easy as specifying a drive size, you need to consider the reliability of the drive and your tolerance for failure.

after that it's a nail-biter whether you'll lose another drive in therebuild

since this host is reasonably powerful and has good specs... X5680 3.33GHz westmeres... I'm adding it to my ESX cluster

I think I remember calculating that WDC 1TB SATA drives have ~0.5% chance of failure (URE) per drive in an array.

8:46 PM
but planning to have it server double duty as a target for vSphere replication and local backups
janky, I know.. but colo power is expensive

@ewwhite Bigger disks?

@MichaelHampton I don't have any... except for a few 300's...
hmm, I just found 6 x 300GB drives...

@ewwhite Go shopping? :) h30094.www3.hp.com/…

http://serverfault.com/questions/503676/isa-wrong-translation-of-the-schema-url-included-in-wsdl
I only posted this because I wanted to say how much I always hated ISA.

This is my gear, so not wanting to spend $$
since I'm taking a toss on the Sun x4540 that I still can't (afford to) power

8:48 PM
#BroOps #HOO-YAH #FLEX

@ewwhite eBay all those 146GB drives and use the proceeds to buy 600GB drives?

@MichaelHampton Hmm... an idea

@TheCleaner For a moment I thought you were talking about having to deal with a server that had an ISA adapter bus. whew

@ewwhite RMA the failed 146s, sell the refurbed replacements, buy dead 600GBs for the same price, RMA them. Profit.

@ewwhite Do the warranty replacements with HP, and then sell whatever they send back to you. So that's, what, 31 drives you can sell?

8:51 PM
@MDMarra Congratz, Dude.

Thanks man!

@MDMarra I bought the 17 bad disks for a few dollars...

ya

so RAID 5?
for 14 disks... RAID 5 + spare or RAID 6?
will be for backups.

R6

8:54 PM
on 146GB 15k SAS disks.

@ewwhite I'd go R6 myself

see, EMC says only use R6 for slow disks where rebuilt time is a worry

the double-failure tolerance will be important
@ewwhite Yeah but rebuilding across 14 146GB disks isn't going to be lightning fast
and ultimately you're losing the same amount of space (2 drives), and not taking that much more parity overhead if the controller doesn't suck

@ewwhite EMC also limits R5 sets to 5 disks, don't they?

yeah...

8:57 PM
That's a lot different than a 14 or 25 disks set

now it's up to my controller setup... I'm going to need to use an expander...
I can run it all on a P410 controller + HP expander... or a P812 controller + HP expander.
@DennisKaarsemaker you deal with these.

@ewwhite I'd check the specs on your RAID controllers to help decide whether to do one raid6 or two raid6 sets... 14 drives is a lot...

So I need to transfer.... 10 gigs of stuff to production

@ewwhite I don't. Last time we had expanders was 4 years ago. Maybe 5

if I copy it now it's going to get backed up tonight, then again on Friday
do I say "fuck you" to the backup pool, or delay the software release until Friday? :)

8:59 PM
this is a SAS cabling nightmare

@voretaq7 backups are for people that make mistakes

@ewwhite Remember to put a nice french braid in the cables so they look pretty

This guy is gonna have a bad time.

@freiheit Backups are required by federal law.
(which is roughly equivalent)

that took me forever to figure out.

9:00 PM
@voretaq7 Being covered by that federal law is clearly a major mistake.

@freiheit our entire government is a fucking mistake :-/

so this will also be an esxi host.

You heard we got our ATC back, right?

I'm throwing all sorts of awful into this
4

Awful is your middle name :)

9:02 PM
curses someone upvoted me too soon.. I offered a bounty, I was trying to get to a rep of 66,666...

@ewwhite So why don't you just use your weird zfs loopback shit
@Zoredache 5 of us can downvote you if you want

@Zoredache we can all downvote you to the magic number if you'd like...
@Zoredache Awful Waffle?

@voretaq7 what is an awful waffle?

@MDMarra I thought about it... but I'm using Avamar backup/VMware... so compression doesn't help me.
and if I do an all-in-one server, I still need something to boot ESX from...
Too many choices...

9:05 PM
@Zoredache (I was looking for the Salute Your Shorts clip, but youtube fails)

@voretaq7 Y?

@freiheit Z!

@freiheit Extreme Basejumping - Blasphemer Edition!

@voretaq7 Don't you mean Luciferian Edition?

9:12 PM
@freiheit mmmm, possibly - but that's far more limiting.

@voretaq7 But, Lucifer... ohh... nevermind...

@freiheit How many times can you drop Lucifer from orbit? Eventually he's going to walk (or demand a MAJOR contract renegotiation that the network just can't afford...)

@voretaq7 I think it took just the one drop for him to negotiate the whole CIO of the nether realms deal...

@freiheit He got that job because there were no other applicants. The hours suck and the staff is largely incompetent.

@voretaq7 Like being a sysadmin?

9:17 PM
@freiheit with incompetent underlings

@voretaq7 Interns leave slightly before they become competent... sigh

@freiheit I wouldn't mind some decent interns...

@voretaq7 We've had ok luck with a combination of getting them from the CS dept or stealing the good interns from the helpdesk (workstation) department...

Is it coincidence that contradictio in terminus and continuous integration tests abbreviate to the same TLA?

Technically, they're "Student Assistants", but that's basically the same as "intern"

9:23 PM

Okay, my controller allows...
RAID0! RAID 1+0! RAID 5 and RAID 50!

"Interns are expendable - we can get another one."
2

And VICTORY! We now have MotoGP on the big honking screen with the good sound system.
Hmm. That's a sign. I should see if I can dig up my copy of V4 Victory.

or I can enable RAID 6 for $$

@ewwhite So, uhm, RAID50 and a hot spare or two?

@freiheit I have a controller that has the RAID60 baked in...
but it's really big... and difficult to fit in.
6

@voretaq7 Sadly, while interns are expendable, well-trained interns are hard to get. It takes a good 3-6 months for them to have just the right amount of fear of the lash. Too much fear and they're cowering instead of working, too little fear and they're facebooking instead of working...

Smart Array 812...

@ewwhite NO CONTEXT FOR YOU!

@freiheit Context BAD!

9:29 PM
@voretaq7 My sweetie, from the other room, indicates that that's what his Mama said.
Me? I'm not so crass as to make such aspersions...

RAID 50 it is!

RAID OVER 9000!

I have a choice of 2 parity groups or 4...
4-disk RAID5 stripes versus 8-disk RAID5 stripes
is moar better?

@ewwhite how many drives is this? Is that with no hot spares?

9:32 PM
If a disk fails, all disks in the parity group will be busy restoring data onto the hot spare

16 disks... all 146GB SAS

On the other hand, all disks will be busy, sharing the load.

it's cool without hot spares...just hook this up to the alert notification

@ewwhite You want a hot spare or two in there...

If you're gonna put more than one thing on it, have 2 raid groups with two of HP's logical volumes on top

9:34 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker this will be a VMFS volume
so nothing really on top.

Then one raidgroup.
if you're gonna stick with 16 disks that is

right.. and the options are RAID 1+0, RAID5 or RAID50... for the RAID 50, I get an option of # of parity groups..

I would not put more than about 16 in the same group.

so 4 = 4x RAID5

9:36 PM
and it's just a capacity thing then...

@ewwhite Unless you know you have a ton of random writes and 1+0 would give you enough capacity... (Hard to predict with VMs because there's going to be a lot of different workloads)

@freiheit Only one VM will live here... vSphere's backup appliance

9:53 PM
(actually holds 3 full kegs)

lordy

@ewwhite Also useful for disposing of users

Okay... I went 15 disks+spare.

@freiheit Shovel, check! Bag of lime, check! Roll of carpet, Check! Ready for helpdesk duty.

Q: Is it possible? - Have multiple DHCP ranges in a single subnet

theeldestDISCLAIMER: My networking-fu is shaky at best. SITUATION: I have a testing environment of 10 lightly-populated racks. I'll be installing a single 1 Gb switch in each rack with 10 Gb uplinks to a single central switch. What I would like to have is for DHCP addresses to be assigned from a specif...

10:01 PM
WSGI is fun! :D

How does this guy have such expensive equipment but not know how to do a simple thing?
Unfair

@MarkHenderson prehaps an intern/junior, and doesn't want to ask his boss and sound stupid?

@JoelESalas it has its good sides.

@Zoredache Could be

10:03 PM

@ewwhite but isn't raidz better than raid5 because of magic?

@MDMarra yes
but VMware doesn't like ZFS

oh

@ewwhite "Your RAID configuration is bad, and you should feel bad!"

I need to carve it into a 32GB VMware logical drive
but you fools convinced me to add a spare

10:05 PM
Make it two spares
and then it will stop complaining about the 15th disk

@DennisKaarsemaker can't spare the capacity

What RAID level did you pick?

@ewwhite "[...] While this will not reduce the risk [...] it should reduce the risk [...]" ... they sure know how to write things that are confusing...

Any EC2 nerds that can shed light on this anon edit:

@DennisKaarsemaker I'm not even sure why I like Python for web services. It just seems neat

10:08 PM
@MDMarra gulp... RAID 50 with a hot-spare
15 disks... + 1

@MarkHenderson sounds good to me.

@ewwhite why

@JoelESalas I like django and flask for building things (kaarsemaker.net = django, git.kaarsemaker.net = flask)

@MDMarra cuz I needed space.

@MarkHenderson seems like a step that was implied to me, though it doesn't hurt to add it. It might have made more sense to place the ssh reload directly after the SSH configuration change.

10:09 PM
and didn't want a HUGE RAID5.

@ewwhite I love hugging RAID5s :3 they're so warm

unless you're thinking a 14-disk RAID5 with 2 hot spares.

@freiheit same goes for video conferencing

@freiheit Onebox bigger, damnit!

10:13 PM
@ewwhite Wouldn't a big R6 be better for that?

Get a little bit more space by using RAID5 + 2 hotspares.

@freiheit The older I get the more I'm convinced that consumer WiFi is almost as bad as consumer printers

@MDMarra RAID 6 is not available on this controller unless I find a keygen or buy a $300 license

oh
sorry, didn't realize I was working with the poor, here.
:)

@MDMarra Wait... shouldn't you be busy... getting busy?
2

10:15 PM
@freiheit That seems a bit exaggerated. I know why it isn't working. It isn't working because WIFI sucks. It is so critical these days why hasn't anyone beaten the guys at the FCC over the head enough so they will cough up a big chunk of bandwidth on better frequencies.

@MarkHenderson We're doing chores/errands before we leave for a week in Florida tomorrow

@MarkHenderson he's married now. His sexlife is over.

@MDMarra Kinda poor... houses cost $

@Zoredache I'm going with "it isn't working, because they don't have a sysadmin"

@freiheit All Dev and no Ops.

10:15 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker Tell me about it :p

Soon there will be little Marras running around and his life will go to hell :)

@MDMarra Yeah chores like taking your penis putting it to work
@ewwhite Did you buy one yet?

I'm trying to recall how much honeymoon XXX I got... :(

Nah, chores like depositing out copious amounts of money that our guests gave us, cleaning the apartment, cleaning the cat's litter box, etc

@MarkHenderson still under contract..

10:17 PM
@ewwhite http://ewwhite.brazzers.com/ ?

@MichaelHampton naw, it was... Caribbean isle... and working the entire time, taking support calls and shit

@MDMarra Haha I remember going to the bank with wads of 50's - I felt like king shit. I haven't had that much money since.

@ewwhite Doing it wrong!

@ewwhite Seriously? I gave my phone to my Dad the day of the wedding and didn't pick it up until 2 weeks later

@ewwhite Now that's romantic!

10:18 PM
@MarkHenderson Heh, ours are mostly checks

@MarkHenderson I wasn't allowed to take my honeymoon for 3 months.

made out to me, but it's her bank that lets you deposit with your phone :(

because of wRok

@ewwhite Well thats why you have 3 houses and I have... 1/3

but I can't afford a RAID6 license key...
And @mdmarra... get down with this!

10:21 PM
haha oh god no

@MDMarra get romantic

Holy fuck GoDaddy sucks
4

@JoelESalas You're just now figuring this out?

@JoelESalas I'll be at their offices in two weeks here in Scottsdale. Any requests? Want me to do an upper decker in their VP bathroom?

@MichaelHampton I hadn't used it in like a year, and how I'm just waiting for the domains on it to expire

10:34 PM
Hah, anyone here like to be a BOFH and Big Brother combined? LARTing like it's 1984:

@MarkHenderson I know a main guy at ObserveIT. Did some work for him - he's a total BOFH. =P

@WesleyDavid We were going to buy their TS screen recording software, but I couldn't even get it to work on the free trial and their support were, well, not great
So we ditched the idea and just decided to beat users into submission if they did the wrong thing. Cheaper and more effective.

@JoelESalas You could always transfer them somewhere else. Good luck.

@MarkHenderson Hmmm... if you're still interested, maybe I could nag the guy I know. But like I said... BOFH.

@WesleyDavid Nah not interested, we now only host clients who would never agree to such software

10:45 PM
@MichaelHampton Yeah but I don't want to spend that money
Also I set up my own firefox sync service woooo!

@JoelESalas You'd have to spend the money to renew the domains anyway.

@MarkHenderson I'm eating my last TimTams right now. :'(

@mozservices You guys took too long so I ended up setting up my own. It was actually fast and easy!

Do you guys actually pay for Microsoft Office?

@ewwhite Technicolor pays for it yes

10:49 PM
Client is asking about volume licensing... I told them $370/ea.
(they want to send a few copies for their home PCs.)
now they're asking if there are any alternatives..

@ewwhite Office with SA gets the home use program.
And wow, I forgot how expensive Office licenses are without the non profit discount.

@WesleyDavid Bill's gotta pay for his mansions, 300' yachts, private planes, and his island somehow ya know.

@Adrian I'd be happy with a 200' yacht.

@WesleyDavid Pfft. I'd be happy with a couple acres in the country and a barn to keep a horse for the lady and a dry spot to store my bikes.
maybe a couple alpaca and a goat to keep the horse happy

@Adrian You do realise that he isn't involved in the day to day running of Microsoft any more, right?

10:58 PM
@Adrian Which island does Bill own? I know Paul Allen, owns a huge chunk of Lopez.

@MarkHenderson Yeah, but they're still doing it the same way he set it up and he still owns a big chunk.

@WesleyDavid First a bike, then you can buy a yacht.

@Zoredache Actually, I was just making the funny. Paul Allen is far more notorious for ostentatious display of his influence, actually.
There's a big boxy abomination on the lakefront where he keeps a bunch of his toys. And one of the few things that united this committee-driven town was a near-unanimous objection to his intention to park his huge yacht in front of his Mercer Island estate for everyone to gawk at during their cross-lake commute.

@Adrian And you have a problem with people being profitable?

@ewwhite I can probably let you have one if you need, let me know

11:06 PM
@MarkHenderson No, but I do have issues with the way they do business. And living in Seattle, you get a front row seat for just how poorly the place is run.

@Zoredache Sure you're not thinking of Larry Ellison? He owns most of Lanai

@Adrian I dunno. I want to hand over some money and get a solution that works. So far they've delivered that for us for almost 10 years, so that works for me. I give you money, you give me stuff. Done.

Yup, I am certain. The school I support had to negotiate a contract with him for something (I forget). Lopez isn't really that big though.
48.4886, -122.8766
I vaguely recall someone saying he owned ~20% of the island.

@Adrian Well that's just being a dick

@MarkHenderson Nothing wrong with that. And I don't have problems judging their technology objectively either. But when so many of my acquaintances get mysteriously booted just months before their options vest? It's tough to respect the upper management much.

11:11 PM
I don't really get the appeal of huge yachts. They cost as much as an airplane, but take heaps longer to get places

Meh. Maybe it's just the way things are done now, but I don't have to like the current business ethos of screwing everyone out of anything you can get your hands on.

@MarkHenderson Like a cruise ship

@MarkHenderson yeah, one of the boats he reputedly almost pulled the trigger on building was well over 100m.

@MarkHenderson I suspect it is just another way for them to try to isolate themselves from the unwashed masses.

@freiheit I like small yachts, like a 40-footer or something. I can understand that because it's a leisurely way of pootling around for an afternoon not using any energy (just wind power), and only the hardcore do big journeys in them
@Zoredache Haha, maybe

11:14 PM
@MarkHenderson You ever read Richard Morgan's Altered Carbon?

@Adrian Nope
@Adrian That does sound like it sucks. I'd be pretty fucking pissed.

@MarkHenderson Good stuff. Gibson-esque SF without the pretension.
@MarkHenderson Yeah. Stack ranking makes for a good mechanism for doing that to people too. People there spend more time in-fighting for their particular solution than they do cranking out good code.

@MarkHenderson I second Adrian's Richard Morgan recommendation. Good books.

@Adrian And I think that shows. Windows Vista and Windows 8 anyone?
Server 2008 was a bit crap too

@MarkHenderson Yeah. And I recall a discussion with a friend about Metro & 2012. 2012 ties so deeply into the APIs available in Win8 that they were quite literally forced into using Metro for 2012.

@Adrian Which is a disgrace
We won't be going to 8/2012

@MarkHenderson Yeah, one of my riding buddies is a lead Dev for 2012. His hands are tied because PMs make ALL the decisions there.

I hate political in-fighting
I won't work anywhere that does it and I won't get involved when our clients try to drag us into their fights
