12:00 AM
@WesleyDavid 30 days, 45 if you're a long term customer in good standing
We have one customer on 90 (!!) because thats what they mandate and wouldn't negotiate down
If we were sole trader or smaller, it would probably be 14
(thats calendar days, not working days, by the way)

Anyone have suggestions for webhosting that doesn't cost an arm & a leg?

@Adrian Honestly? I use Hostgator
It's shared. It's cpanel. But it's cheap and so far reliable

@Adrian Do you want it to also not suck? I help with a non-profit's 1and1 hosted drupal site. It works, it's pretty cheap, it rarely breaks, but it does sorta suck...

@MarkHenderson Will give them a look. I liked Dreamhost at first, but found that they specifically disallow off-system forwarding of catch-all listings, which I've used with my primary domain since 2003.
@freiheit I think they all suck in one fashion or another.
I know better than to ask for one that doesn't suck. =)

@Adrian Like software. Or hardware.

12:04 AM
@freiheit Yes. Every OS Sucks, after all.

@MarkHenderson Gotcha.
@Adrian What are you looking for? some dinky shared box or a VPS / Dedi to do some dev on?

@WesleyDavid Shared is actually fine. I don't have the budget for VPS since it doesn't generate revenue.

@Adrian Siteground was always good to me. Quick support in case something needed answering.
@Adrian nevermind
Wow I'm straight up tripping today.

12:25 AM
Oh man I'm so fucking out of here
it's awesome

@JoelESalas Gonna peel out in the parking lot when you leave?
Burn that Camry rubber like a gangster!

@WesleyDavid I once gave everyone in the office the double-bird as I was leaving on a 3 week holiday, singing "Cya fuckers". Got to the lift and realised I forgot my car keys. Had to go back shamefaced to get them
Thankfully I work with light hearted people

@MarkHenderson Who spit in your coffee for the next year.

@WesleyDavid Haha nobody. It was just a bit of fun. Plus I rarely drink coffee
Once a week maybe

@MarkHenderson Whaaaat

12:29 AM
@MarkHenderson I THOUGHT I KNEW YOU MAN

I'm on a bit of a health kick at the moment. I ditched Red Bull/V/Energy Drinks about a month ago and started running for 30 minutes 3 mornings a week (6am-6:30 Mon, Wed, Fri). I've lost 6 kilo's in 4 weeks and am almost back to my pre-wedding weight
I also ditched my normal chicken and mayo sandwich for a roast beef or pastrami and salad

@MarkHenderson slow clap

12:46 AM
@MarkHenderson Wait, you're married and trying to lose weight!? Now I'm confused!

@KevinSoviero Yeah, two reasons: 1. I have a young kid who is constantly irritated by the fact that Daddy can't chase him around the yard for very long (he actually said "No Daddy you can't come on the trampoline, your tummy is too big and you won't fit!) and 2. Trying to get more sex

evening
I came home from work at 5, I just woke up from a nap....at 8:45PM

@Cole Hi nanna
Had your blue rinse lately?
Kidding; I love nanna naps

I woke up SO confused

1:01 AM
@Cole Haha did you start getting ready for work?
That's two REM cycles, no wonder you were confused

No I was like WHAT DAY IS THIS

@Cole hahaha
Did your memory start slotting back in as you gradually woke up?

Yeah I was like "ohh okay, well I'm hungry now"
also my girlfriend is so funny
that girl Kristina is SUPER religious and she ALWAYS posts things like this. So Jenna commented... hahaha

@Cole Wait, girlfriend? What did I miss? =)

@WesleyDavid I realized I was just being a dick to Jenna. Now that I'm not, things are great

1:06 AM
@Cole That's a good feel

Hey all, I'm applying for a job, and I'm trying to decide how much to ask for... Any ideas?

@JoelESalas sure is. She even made the bed before she left today (I was at work)

@Cole Well that's nice!

@KevinSoviero $400K

We went to the Museum of Fine Arts on Saturday, it was pretty awesome

1:07 AM
Seriously I don't know. Where do you live? What do you do?

@JoelESalas Ok!

I mean anyone who will willing put up with my shit is a keeper.

@JoelESalas Oh, Austin, TX, 2-3 years exp., Linux systems administrator.
No college, or certs.

@KevinSoviero Specialties?

1:14 AM
@KevinSoviero That's almost impossible to answer considering how much of that's consulting work where you didn't list the type of industries you were consulting for.

@KevinSoviero 80K

@JoelESalas Really? With the $400K recommendation, I can't decide. ;)

@KevinSoviero 80K salary, 320K signing.

@KevinSoviero I assume Austin is a little less than LA area, and without a strong specialty in one knowledge domain you end up being a generalist
Do you know automation bullshits like Puppet/Jenkins/MCollective, shit like that?
2
or possibly private cloud stuff like OpenStack or Eucalyptus?

@jscott Going to LOPSA EAST?

1:17 AM
Those are an instant +20K around here

"automation bullshits" new software category.

lol'd

@Jacob :( Nope.

@jscott Damn, not too late

@JoelESalas None of the above... KVM here...

1:19 AM
@KevinSoviero KVM is a good start, try playing with Openstack a bit and see if it suits you
But definitely learn those and a real language, one of perl/python/ruby will do
you'll add a lot to your value
I'm in your shoes, 3 years experience and no college

@JoelESalas I am quite good at Bash and Python.

@KevinSoviero Do you have a github?

@JoelESalas Huh? No... It's all for internal use. ;)

@KevinSoviero HM

@JoelESalas ?
Anyway, how about $60K? It's for a job at Rackspace by the way.

1:24 AM
@KevinSoviero run

@Jacob Huh? I thought people liked RS.

@KevinSoviero As a customer sure, but as a "fanatic" meh.
Hosting sucks

@Jacob Well, I'm applying for a backend position, I don't work with customers.

That's good

@KevinSoviero Doesn't matter dude, you'll get more skills and more money working for a company versus a service provider
(right now)

1:27 AM
@JoelESalas This is very true
Internal IT> service provider

Quick question - is there any pattern you guys use when selecting VLAN IDs? I just got asked "Why are your phones on VLAN 2?" and I didn't really have a good answer
I just increment by one each time; he felt I should have had a better answer

@MarkHenderson "Phones are VLAN2 'cause you need two people to make a phone call work."
3

@jscott hah

@JoelESalas Perhaps, but RackSpace is the only one who's contacted me.
@JoelESalas ?

@KevinSoviero You do live in a rather less-techy place
I get a few recruiter emails a day

1:40 AM
@JoelESalas Austin's not bad, but it's not the West Coast either.

@JoelESalas Where are you?

@KevinSoviero Los Angeles

@JoelESalas I've wanted to move to Seattle, what's the tech environment like there?

@KevinSoviero Ask @Adrian.

@KevinSoviero Pretty excellent, I'd be wary of moving without visiting though. Get in touch with @Adrian

1:42 AM
@JoelESalas Ok. Hey @Adrian!

jobs... pssh

@ewwhite ?

oh, just saying that they suck.
Are you looking @KevinSoviero ?

@KevinSoviero Seattle tends to specialize in Web startups. You'd need to seriously bone up on your NGinx/Apache & JBoss/Tomcat. Your background seems very much like mine, actually, mostly back-office services & automation. I'm getting some activity, but not a whole lot. If you're okay working for Amazon for a few years, by all means, move here. Amazon has a lot of open positions for entry-level generalists that pay tolerable well.

@MarkHenderson Our wired VLANs are concats of "2[0]" + "building number" + "IDF number". Wifi is "3[0]" + "building number".

1:45 AM
@KevinSoviero don't let @ewwhite trick you!

@ewwhite I wasn't, but then RackSpace called me, and I don't want to pass it up if I shouldn't.

@KevinSoviero Try them out... I mean, if you're into big infrastructure.

@KevinSoviero I'd pass on Rackspace. You'll get pigeonholed, at least based on the way our guy here that used to work there talks

e.g. Building 16, only a single M/IDF: Wired data = 2016, wifi = 3016. Building 32, 3 IDFs: Wired IDF1 2032, IDF2 2034, IDF3 2036, wifi 3032.

@JoelESalas Well, I own an IT consulting firm, but the pay is painfully unstable. I'd like to work at a stable job.

1:47 AM
@KevinSoviero Hit customers that have bigger margins

@KevinSoviero why so unstable?

@ewwhite Well, right now I have an income of $0...

@KevinSoviero Oh :(

@ewwhite I've got lots of leads, but no projects... Kind of annoying.

how are the Linux skills?

1:49 AM
@ewwhite huh?

Do you know what NetworkManager does?

@ewwhite Screws everything up!!

@jscott hi-5

Acceptable answer.

1:52 AM
@ewwhite Yes, I know what NetworkMangler does. Exactly what the name implies.

@KevinSoviero and how about iptables? ;)

@ewwhite Yup. :D

Take my job! I'll go work for Stack Exchange!
4

Is SE hiring admins again?!

@ewwhite WTF? That's ok. Where do you work?

1:55 AM
@KevinSoviero Somewhere in NY.
@jscott yeah...
I think so

@ewwhite I'm in Austin, TX...

Wow, good for them. Must still be growing pretty well to keep adding to the team.

Does Stack Exchange have Linux jobs? I thought they were all Windows.

@ewwhite fuck iptables

@JoelESalas What do you use?

1:57 AM
@KevinSoviero There's some Linux stuff, e.g. haproxy front end. Though the webservers are indeed running Windoze.

@KevinSoviero They stick all of their admins in a little broom closet
@KevinSoviero Oh I use it, I just bombed a question on iptables when interviewing at @ewwhite's company

@JoelESalas Why does everyone know where he works except me!?

@MichaelHampton Yes, because they are insufferable and written for an audience who has an undisclosed amount of prior knowledge

I get my new laptop tomorrow!

2:01 AM
@KevinSoviero You just haven't been around long enough.

@MarkHenderson What? I love man pages... Wait... I need to re-read that last sentence a few more times...

@MarkHenderson So then an info fan then, eh?

@KevinSoviero I linked to it.
6 mins ago, by ewwhite
@KevinSoviero Somewhere in NY.

@KevinSoviero We need engineers at Hautelook :D

@ewwhite Oh, I didn't see the link for the letters "NY"
@JoelESalas Austin?

2:03 AM
@KevinSoviero Being discreet... didn't want to piss off candidates who didn't make it through the process... :)

That's because the DEVELOPERS chose a shade of blue that's very difficult to see on Windows.

@KevinSoviero Los Angeles
@ewwhite You are uninvited to my birthday party

@MichaelHampton I'm on Linux ;)

@KevinSoviero Hm. Well it's not so easy to see on my Linux box either. But it's even more difficult on Windows...

New York, NY (allows remote) (relocation offered)
lure...

2:06 AM
I still need a salary amount for my RackSpace job application...

@KevinSoviero I stand by my 80K

@JoelESalas Ok... I didn't really want to work at RS anyway! :D

FWIW, an ex-RS manager that I'd phone screen'd pretty much agreed with the consensus about that place. Personally, I don't want to be doing hosting support, and walked away from that one.

can I haz $10,000
I wantz a new computerz

This doesn't appear to be on topic for Server Fault as it doesn't appear to relate to system administration in a professional capacity (this being your personal desktop). I've requested your question be migrated to our sister site Super User, though a search there is likely to turn up existing answers, such as this one. Of course, that's also the advice that your script gave... — Michael Hampton 59 secs ago

2:08 AM
@Adrian What's the consensus again? That RS is a bad place to work?

@KevinSoviero The real question is, which distribution, and which desktop environmen?

@KevinSoviero Not sure that it's "bad", but sub-optimal for career-progression.

@Adrian Oh.
@MichaelHampton ?

Believe me, I've worked places that qualified as "bad". Including significant risk of personal injury from the clientele.

7 mins ago, by Kevin Soviero
@MichaelHampton I'm on Linux ;)

2:11 AM
@Adrian Scary

@MichaelHampton Depends. Ubuntu 12.04/Unity on desktop, Mint/Cinnamon on laptop, and CentOS/CLI on all my servers...

@KevinSoviero OK, but please watch the profanity. You said both "U" words.

@JoelESalas Meh. Only had run-ins with the SWAT teams a couple times while I was there. Couple bomb threats and a few fires.
One staff members brought a live grenade in to work one day.

@Adrian You work at a high school?

It was a mental hospital, wasn't it?

2:15 AM
@MichaelHampton Yeah, outpatient mental health

@Adrian Only, as I recall, half your staff really needed to be put in the rubber rooms...

@MichaelHampton yeah, on a good day.

2:29 AM
If you received $0.01 on the first day, $0.02 on the second, and so on, how many cents would you have all together on the 100th day? It's my little brother's math homework, and it seems really simple, but I can't figure out how to go about it...

@KevinSoviero You'd be richer than Croesus.
The wheat and chessboard problem (the problem is sometimes expressed in terms of rice instead of wheat) is a mathematical problem in the form of a word problem: The problem may be solved using simple addition. With 64 squares on a chessboard, if the number of grains doubles on successive squares, then the sum of grains on all 64 squares is: 1 + 2 + 4 + 8... and so forth for the 64 squares. The total number of grains equals 18,446,744,073,709,551,615, which is a much higher number than most people intuitively expect. The exercise of working through this pro...

@MichaelHampton My head hurts... What's the actual answer, so we can work backwards on this end...

@KevinSoviero 2ⁿ - 1 where n is the number of days
MARKING FUCKDOWN

@MichaelHampton That's what I thought, but I got the following answer: 1.2676506×10²⁸
I don't think a 11 yo is supposed to figure that out

@KevinSoviero They aren't. What the hell sort of math class is that?

2:41 AM
@KevinSoviero well, it all depends on if he's doubling, or incrementing by 1

Oh hell, hold on a minute...

Nexus 10 - Very nice - Gave my wife one today

@KevinSoviero cause in the case, its $50.50, which is a question I actually remember from back then... which is easy

@MattBear Yeah, that would be appropriate for that age, I think.

@KevinSoviero It's a factorial, isn't it?
@KevinSoviero The "and so on" stops at the wrong place, I would think. Does it double every time? Does it simply add one cent?
MOAR PATTERN!

2:45 AM
@MichaelHampton yeah, and you kinda cheat it by just adding the top 50 numbers to the bottem 50, equaling 100, or $1, then + .50 for the middle,
so 50 x $1 + .50

There's a reason I hate math... I gave up, used a spreadsheet, and got the same $50.50 number as you guys... Damn, I feel stupid. I'm gonna go compile a kernel from scratch or some shit.

@KevinSoviero So it was just counting, and not doubling?

it was the following math problem...

@KevinSoviero considering the state of schools these days... I done think even the teacher would understand exponential growth, much less like an 11 year old trying to explain it to her :p

@KevinSoviero who gives a shit if he gets it right; on the 100th day he is going to be crazy rich

2:49 AM
@KevinSoviero yes, $50.50

@MarkHenderson That's what I was just going to post
@MattBear It doubles every day.

@ChrisS Ugh no it doesn't - I just re-read it. Ok he will be crazy rich for a 5 year old :P
Never mind :p

@ChrisS 3 is not 2 doubled :p

Er, hrm, I blame lack of caffeine - or that I'm playing Cut the Rope

I HATE SHAREPOINT!!!
officially
just throwing that out there

2:51 AM
Everyone does

infopath is now refusing to publish to one of our sites...
no warning, no reason
just "url not valid"

If "enterprise" software didn't malfunction in strange and mysterious ways all the time, half of us would be unemployed. Which, of course, is why it does.

@MichaelHampton im gonna quit... and start building cars
<--- has been watching a lot of Fast 'n Loud, and Overhaulin
if my worst worry was paint not being done on time, shiiiiit life would be easy

3:11 AM
@MattBear Hah, I watched a show about a guy who built a kit car - it was called A Car is Born I thnik - it was incredibly addictive, but to even build a kit car takes months of precision work

@MarkHenderson my dad and I have built a few
not kit cars, hot rods

@MattBear Impressive. My Dad did one when I was a kid - restored a '36 chev ute to factory condition
Took him 10 years
And my mum got the shits and banned him from working on it for months at a time, because he only had 1 day a week off and he'd spend the whole day in the shed

@MarkHenderson niiice

He sold it when we moved to the city; but he still sees it on TV every now and again; he saw it as a show car on a concourse once and another time it was being used as an exhibit at a flower show

we've done a '38 plymouth truck, a '32 model A, a '68 Jeep CJ-5, and a few others that werent as extensive

3:32 AM
@MattBear Wow
Impressive list
I'd love to do something like that, but I don't have the space, time or knowledge, and my Dad lives a 13 hour drive away
Another box of Ubiquity gear. Yum.

3:46 AM
ROFL

@MarkHenderson next project is a '73 Jeep Truck, hard to find time to do anything anymore...

@MattBear Sounds like you don't like being in your house. =) / =(

along those lines im thinking
@WesleyDavid I like projects that have a start, a middle, and an end....
not like my day job lol

@MattBear I like projects that pay me. Unlike my day/night/all-my-effing-life job.

@WesleyDavid lol

3:56 AM
@MarkHenderson Oy. I hated dealing with their M5 WiFi bullets.

well, if I do it right I can turn a bit of a profit

@KevinSoviero Bah, simple binary math. 2^101-1 (which is a super handy shortcut for this type of thing :) )

@MarkHenderson Had about 250 of them in the environment I was working in. They did NOT deal well with environmental temperature fluctuations.

@MichaelHampton GRRR YOU REMIND ME… fucking SuperMicro

@MikeyB At least SuperMicro claims to be server hardware.

4:01 AM
One particular server I have, docs say "Supports up to 4GB of RAM". With 4GB of RAM installed, the OS sees 3GB.
Call up SuperMicro support, they say "yeah, the server BIOS/chipset/whatever puts a 1GB memory hole in at 3GB so the OS can only use 3GB."
"So your docs are wrong and it only supports 3GB?"
"No, it supports 4GB."
"…"
Fuckers.

@MikeyB 4GB? That's old enough to Office Space it.

@MikeyB sounds about right lol... "Your 5 gallon bucket has a giant hole at the 4 gallon mark", "right, its supposed to", "so it's a 4 gallon bucket", "No, its 5 gallons"
I just tossed some AMD K6-2 300mhz servers I found behind my house
dunno where I got em...

pastie.org/7741031 ← the email thread
@MichaelHampton Yeah, but it's a 1U rackmount that I got for free. And it's MINE. At the moment it's a FreeBSD test box

yaaawwwn... CU on sharepoint
maybe this will end my nightmare
and if not.... fuck it, burn this damn thing down!
rm -rf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
then blame the chinese
or the Australians...

@Adrian Really?! Good to know as I was actually going to put them forward as a proposal

4:10 AM
shifty bastards
h@xx0rs my Sh@reP0int$ will you!

We're also looking at their AirFibre appliance for some short-range gigabit over-thei-air

@MarkHenderson Oh yeah. Can't give details due to NDA, but the failure rate was fairly high, and they tended to lose their filesystem and revert to default, requiring a re-flashing with the desired certs & configs rather frequently.

@Adrian Hmmm. These ones would actually be mounted on vehicles, so extreme temperature swings are not just likely but guaranteed
Thankfully it's just in its very early stages of the proposal, so they don't expect me to have prototyped anything

@MarkHenderson They also did not deal well with power loss.

@Adrian Which is another regular occurance
This is all very interesting news...

4:16 AM
Assign a subscription to your server, or stop using RHEL. — Michael Hampton 21 secs ago
Where the fuck do these people come from?

@MarkHenderson Yep. They're pretty much designed to sit someplace hooked up to a PoE switch and run 24/7/365 with UPS power and a generator backing them.

4:39 AM
@Adrian Hmm. But you had trouble with them even when they were static because of temperature changes
Here it can get close to 0 at night and up to 40+ during the day (although admittedly not in the same 24 hour period, a 40+ day would typically be about 20 at night) so they need to be fairly rugged.

@MarkHenderson Yep.

Any troubles with their other products?
Particularly the UniFi? I was thinking of a 5Ghz outdoor UniFi for home

@MarkHenderson We didn't use any of the others in such large quantities. Their router board stuff worked pretty well for us though.

@Adrian Mkay. I have no interest in the RouterBoard products for the moment
Mainly because they can't run PFSense

4:57 AM
Alix FTW =]
I just finished assembling the new one for my house with a 3x3 802.11n 5GHz main radio and 1+1 802.11b 250mw 2.4GHz secondary.
I was thinking about holding out for ac or ad, but I doubt FreeBSD will support those for a while. Especially since Atheros is becoming more Qualcom everyday.

@ChrisS Well there's only one .ac SoC provider at the moment, isn't there?
Broadcom? And it's buggy? From memory

Sounds vaguely right....
Broadcom BCM94352HMB <-- Yep
Realtek RTL8812AE <-- Reference Design released to vendors, but not "in production" yet

I'm too drunk for this.

@ChrisS Yeah, I had a look around and all the .ac providers are using that one and apparently they have issues with devices that are in low power mode resuming. or something.
I don't quite remember

I haven't paid attention. Broadcom has a terrible track record of working with open source projects

5:05 AM
@Iain @WesleyDavid Finally cracked 100km for the month... and 2500+ ft of elevation. Today was brutal, 40-50km/h wind (uphill in both directions!) and my daughter as stoker for the 315ft climb.

I'm disappointed that 802.11ac made so many of the features optional. In particular beamforming and MU-MIMO.

@Ward Enslave them young. Break their wills early!

This is the 3rd day in row that she's come to work with me.

@ChrisS I don't even pretend to know what either of those things are; even after skimming their wiki pages

@MarkHenderson beamforming - use multiple antenna sending in sequence on the same frequency. The resulting signal in one direction is very strong...

5:13 AM
@Ward Like actually in the offices? How's she like it?

MU-MIMO - Since there are up to 8 Spatial Streams (independent sending or receiving signals) MU- allows you to use some for sending and other for receiving, and each SS can talk to a different client.
With 802.11n MIMO you can only "bond' multiple SS to get a single higher aggregate single communication channel

She loves it, we have dogs (and she really wants a dog), we had a company lunch on Fri that she came to... she gets to play Moshi Monsters on the computer... I taught her to install Ubuntu.

@Ward D'aww. Sysadmin in training.

I'm hoping she'll get into something more lucrative, like supermodel or actress...

@Ward I dunno, they can be even more soul destroying than sysadmin work

5:25 AM
I'm sure she'll be able to cope with it. Although her only big production to date (a music video) was done for free.
Hold it, how long can you go back and delete something you post here yourself?

@Ward No idea but you want the video removed?

Nah, I'll risk it...

Cos I can remove it if you want
Well, I can remove the link to it :p

It's on the bands' official page on Youtube and vimeo, the prodcution company has it up... The whole point was to get publicity ont eh Canadian video channel MuchMusic.

@Ward 60 seconds.

6:07 AM
@Ward - excellent - how was wind that strong on the tandem ?

@ewwhite wtb a blade chassis, talk me out of it?

6:30 AM
http://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/detail?vulnId=CVE-2013-1282

Interesting... anyone seen public PoC's for this exploit online?

@Iain The route is mostly N-S, the wind was from the NW...
It's along residential streets, so sometimes the wind is blocked (enough so that crosswind isn't gonna blow you over), other times it's funnelled right at you. (Going west this morning was brutal)

@Ward That's not so bad then. We've had quite strong winds recently and our routes are quite windy so passing field gates,breaks in hedges and junctions can be quite interesting

The prevailing winds here are either NW or E, but usually when it's NW is more W than N. But yeah, it's urban cycling, so not many open fields. But even going past the sports field of a school we could feel the bike getting buffetted around.

6:46 AM
here they are mostly westerlies but depending on the track of the weather it can be NW to SW and will often go through the whole lot as it passws though

Tomorrow I'll try riding my mountain bike that's even older than my tandem...
@WesleyDavid Even a 28 year old bike will get you places!
Oops, it's only 27 years old.

7:06 AM
@JoelESalas Why do you want blade servers?

7:55 AM
@JoelESalas Which vendor's blade offering are you looking at?
@JoelESalas Where are you going to put it, is it a datacentre, or an electrical broom cupboard? Do you have good cooling (underfloor, cold-aisle), or a Daikin office Aircon unit in a room?
@JoelESalas How many U do you have to put servers into, and how many servers do you want?
