Linux and the such.
Eh, fine... Linux is fragmenting and sucking a bit
How's Susie treating you?
@freiheit So @WesleyDavid hasn't bought one yet? Jeebus.
@ScottPack I know!
@ewwhite hehe sudo rm -rf /* !!!
@ScottPack Apparently he needs to mine the metals, alloy them himself, form the tubes, and weld it himself... If he had access to a linear accelerator he might try to form the metal atoms out of raw materials, too...
00:04
Good. I am getting a lot of positive feedback and been really trying to thrive, so that's good.
@MattBear meh. dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=4096 count=16 will do it just as well and be faster.
@Goatmale See, some people are appreciative of my efforts to hook them up!
I'm glad it's working out.
@freiheit he can use mine, I built it to try to make some anti-matter to power my own personal Galaxy class starship, but I gave up after I couldn't find a reliable chief security officer
very!
@Goatmale SO what's next?
00:09
work my way back into second shift. learn everything
@Goatmale they are hiring a lot it seems
Setting up our monitoring software in a test vm to test the upgrade to the new version and working on a teamviewer rollout project.
yah, ton of people getting hired on all the time
surprised to hear teamviewer
00:26
@ewwhite So you're pretty good on the hookup? Is that what I'm hearing?
@ScottPack I know a lot of people.
my sisters starting her own lingerie line...
@MattBear Pics or it didn't happen.
@MattBear Don't mention that around @WesleyDavid; he will ask you to set her up with him
@MattBear That's not lingerie... that's some rags that have been cut into a rectangle with some straps
And that sounded heaps harsher than I meant it to
@MarkHenderson on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being Clint Eastwood and 10 being that "Situation" guy from jersey shore... how much of a douchebag is he?
(9 or lower gets her number!)
00:33
@MarkHenderson For once I think the blonde is nicer looking than the ginger.
@MattBear 5
she's all his!
I think that's pretty fair. I think he puts on a good show for us.
He's not very manly though. His beard sucks.
555-555-0100
tell her the internets are calling
If he would just buy that damn bike he would drop 1 douchebaggery point, until he starts bragging about how much he rides his bike and how his muscles are rippling. Then he gains a +2
00:36
@MarkHenderson does he have a goatee and wear Affliction shirts?
@ScottPack theres a blonde?
@MattBear Never met him in real life, but I suspect he does have a goatee and I don't know what an Affliction shirt is
@ScottPack I think the ebony model wins it. Look at that last pic.
@Goatmale teamviewer is Busch league. Bomgar is where it's at!
I like sad eye'd ginger.
@MarkHenderson lmgt4u?
00:39
@jscott I didn't scroll down that far - work here is pretty liberal but there's a meeting in the office behind me with a glass wall looking to my desk
@MattBear I didn't care enough to put any effort into it
We are cheap and I believe that teamviewer is our backup
umm go to a club, every douchebag who thinks he's tough and has game will be wearing one
@Goatmale One of them is probably @MattBear's sister...
@MarkHenderson haha no
@MarkHenderson I'll call it, she's the best looking of the lot. But I'm still not sure what organic lingerie is.
00:41
@MattBear I am way too uncool to be going to clubs :p
@jscott recycled fabric cutoffs I think
Hemp perhaps?
@MarkHenderson reverse that sentance
@MattBear I am way too club to be going to uncool?
"I have a life, I dont go to clubs"
@MarkHenderson With "organic" in there, I have to assume lycra, polyester and other synths are all out.
@MattBear Oh right. Last club I went to was about 4 years ago for a friends birthday
00:42
umm organic cotton
@MattBear .... there's non-organic cotton?
Looked at it again... The dark hair girl has a fantastic smile. She wins.
It grows on a damn bush
Now much more organic can you get?
@MarkHenderson its a plant, I guess its herbicide and pesticide free
non-genetically modified
or some shit
@MattBear Which means it is probably destroying the neighbouring farmers crops with all of the pests that cotton brings with it
Nobody likes being next to a cotton farmer, but I think they would prefer to have oen that sprays his cotton rather than the one that brings a plague
And who cares if it's genetically modified, you're not eating it. You're wearing it.
Sounds like hippy bullshit, sorry
00:44
I dunno, I like my shit bug and disease free
@MarkHenderson I agree
but... she is my sister, I might make fun of her hippy liberal crap, but I will support her too
@MattBear I take it you and your sister are quite different?
My sister is like that, she's into organic this and recycled that, but I think that's just because she's always poor. I think if someone gave her a million bucks she'd forget most of it in an instant and would stop shopping at 2nd hand stores and painting old lamps from the rubbish
@MattBear I can respect that
@MarkHenderson I have hot rods, trucks, motorcycles, guns, im a Lt. in the Army Guard, and work in the corporate world
shes... a Neo-Hippy
@MattBear As much as I don't approve of the gun culture in the US, I really want to go there one day just so I can shoot an AK47
Friend of mine did that, she said it was awesome
@MarkHenderson you cant really do that, except on certain ranges in certain states
@MattBear Well, she found one that lets you do that
00:50
Nevada most likely
to own one, it takes a class 3 license, which is military/law enforcement
or dealer
and those licenses arent even permitted in most states
though I do own an SKS, which was the precursor to the AK
and in the Army I shoot M-16's, M240B, M249, M-2, M203, etc etc etc..
M203 and the 240B are the funnest :D
@jscott I can't disagree with that assessment.
You people. I get into this impotent fight with the wife all the time. Organic these days has nothing to do with chemistry. It's cotton that was grown without pesticides and shit.
Or, rather, it was grown without pesticides and probably with shit.
@ScottPack pretty much
thats the other part, organic fertilizer
aka poop
Depending on the state. The whole definition of organic isn't exactly defined.
@ScottPack Then it sounds like it still has everything to do with chemistry. :)
200 years of agricultural progress, now we've progressed so far that they are trying to make us go back to how it was 200 years ago
01:00
@jscott I meant the definition of the word organic has nothing to do with whether or not something is construction with carbon based compounds and more to do with the manufacturing process.
@MattBear Yeah, or as one of the farmer's around here likes to say, "Organic vegetables. Or as your grandmother would call them, vegetables.
whoosh -- Yes, I've used the "I've never seen an inorganic apple" line too much.
its a scam really
basically so farmers and stores can charge more for shit
I understand "organic beef"
It depends. Have you ever had proper old school raised chicken?
Holy shit, that stuff is GOOD
no steroids and shit, meet tastes better
my friends family has a turkey farm
HOLY SHIT those birds grow fast, and get huge
Poultry that grew up eating meat?
Yowza
01:03
you can't give chicken hgo in America.
and are so dumb they will look straight up in the rain with their mouths open and drown
@Goatmale hgo?
err.. HGH
Roofies?
@Goatmale pretty sure that wouldnt do shit to a chicken
CGH might
Err. You can't give hormones or steroids to chicken in merica
01:05
@Goatmale true, there are none approved
but they do keep them jammed into cages, pumped full of food and antibiotics
and they are genetically modified so that you can have a full grown chicken or turkey in like 47 days
Unless they're free range. Where at some point the warehouse door is opened up and the chickens in crates are permitted to go outside into the terrifyingly bright outside if they so choose.
genetically modified vegetables, awesome
meat pumped full of chemicals.. not awesome
genetically modified meat, cool
cows and chickens and people? yeah
soylent green!!

1 hour later…
02:21
@MarkHenderson Thewhowiththewhatallovermywhere?!
@freiheit Wellll... I could have a Trek 1000 circa 2003 with new rims for $300 if I wanted.
I just didn't like the condition. Looks dirty and the handlebars have some funky custom pipe-foam, duct tape job on them.
Just got the quote for fixed wireless
@MarkHenderson Let me guess...
$2668/month for 50/50mb
$17,000
Oh.
Ohhh, fixed. Nevermind.
No setup or equipment cost because this building already has his receivers on it
02:31
Okay, that's about what I'd expect.
Seriously? I almost fucking died
He already has the receivers in the roof, he's got connections to the dmarc in the building, it in theory shouldn't be that much more than a typical connection
It's all just pure profit for him
@MarkHenderson My datacenter is owned by an ISP in the area that specializes in wireless links and backhauls. That kind of link if expensive.
@WesleyDavid He told me he's had his equipment on the roof here for 10 years already. I'll be busy subsidizing his installations on the other buildings around
Oh well we're looking at doing a whole package, might make it worthwhile
Taking colo space, and getting hte fixed wireless to terminate in the colo and then we manage our own internet out from there
Which he said is quite a common setup for his clients
@MarkHenderson So your workplace is getting a new colocation space?
@WesleyDavid We're currently a bit too spread out and everything's just a bit too far away and just a bit too expensive
So we're looking at options
This place is literally across the road
02:34
@MarkHenderson And all backed by wireless for the main connection? For some reason that seems brave.
Microwave backhauls be what they may, that seems like some risky stuff.
@WesleyDavid The only wireless will be from here to the DC, which is under 100 meters, and they offer a 4-nine's SLA
But hey, if it works.
So worst case our office loses internet connection. Like it would normally.
@MarkHenderson Ohhhhh, okay. So, the DC is wireless to the office, and then the office is the gateway for everything?
But before we sign anything I'll be wanting to see SLA history etc
@WesleyDavid Other way around. Office is wireless to the DC, and everything lives in the DC
02:36
@MarkHenderson Okay, so the DC has the wired gateway to the webs.
So we'll just keep a minimum of dev servers in the office, and everything will move into the DC, and all our other colo facilities will be consolidated
@WesleyDavid Correct. It's a tier-2 building
@MarkHenderson Where are you in sydney area?
Which we've been trying to find a way into for 3 years now, and finally found this small company who have 2000m2 there
@WesleyDavid North West
About a 1 hour drive from the city
02:37
Not that I'm going to stalk you or anything. Remember, I'm off the idea of killing you for your wife.
We're in a place called NorWest Business Park, which is just what it sounds like
@MarkHenderson How's Fall so far?
@WesleyDavid You mean Autumn
It's cold and depressing and I hate it
@MarkHenderson Really? It gets that way there?
I thought it was all arid and dry and kangaroos.
Wait, Sydney is kinda south...
Drinking with the bossman is value++
02:50
@MarkHenderson just go outside and kill a croc or two with your noife, down a couple fosters and eat some wallaby stew!
I been studying the culture over there
watch crocodile dundee about 8 times
toimes
@MattBear FOSTERS!! Australian for beer!!
@Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin @Kevin
@WesleyDavid just like cerveza is mexican for budweiser!
Lots of poop on the star wall I see.
Is now a good time to talk about the enormous dump I took at my datacenter?
@WesleyDavid pray tell
@MarkHenderson next to the hospital or in the hospital?
02:54
how did it feel coming out of your butt?
was it smooth? chunky?
so big that it stretched you out and hurt?
tore your anus a bit?
@MattBear I think you're just as welcome in the counselor's office as your wife.
=P
burned cause you ate some jalapenos?
...but I did have afterglow when it was over.
and you had to stick a Popsicle on it?
*in it
*up it
@WesleyDavid you did want to talk about it...
I was just acting interested
geez
I was about to ask, at or in...
02:56
It was so big, when the kraken poops, he says "RELEASE THE WESLEY!!"
its called "Active Listening"
@MattBear POOOOOOOOP
@JourneymanGeek Hello!
I'm feeling all weird after a full day of listening to Foamy in the background at the DC.
@JourneymanGeek Whaddup gangster?
say poop again :p
02:59
not much, had a phone interview delayed by a snowstorm, and trying to make sense of my tablet ;p
@MattBear Poop again!
Haw haw - tricked you.
@JourneymanGeek Wait, snowstorm where?
trying to fill the star wall with poop comments from you
colorado apparently
not here ;p
@JourneymanGeek I actually google snow in singapore and was amazed to see it's happened before.
@MattBear And what's this about a sister with a lingerie thing? I need a new ServerFaulter's family member to slime all over since I'm not chasing Mark's wife anymore.
03:02
@JourneymanGeek What was the company?
@WesleyDavid: the search engine
apparently my sister has some hot friends.... haha
@MattBear Down boy.
@JourneymanGeek Ohhh, very nice. Cuil? Yeah, about them...
@MattBear I like how the sketches for the lingerie have mysterious grease stains on them.
@WesleyDavid lol I diddnt notice that... now I'm grossed out
03:09
Great - now my main external hard drive is no longer being recognized.
@WesleyDavid: got backups?
@JourneymanGeek Yeah
It showed up - It's what I get for using an NTFS volume on a Mac.
@WesleyDavid: just for science then, plug it into a linux...
oh close enough
@JourneymanGeek Do you have a Google number or some means of calling a US phone without costing?
@WesleyDavid: got google voice
why?
Its not well tested enough tho
03:15
@JourneymanGeek Can you call my business phone and let it ring through to voicemail? One person said that it got to my personal voicemail, but all the options are set up right.
602-492-7360
@MattBear You can test that too if you want.
Whomever.
its not working on my side for some reason :/
it says its calling my google talk, but does nothing
@JourneymanGeek Did you try control-alt-yousuckatcomputers?
=P
lol
Its a webapp
@JourneymanGeek Yeah - I dungeddit.
prolly on my end ;p
I'm not supposed to have google voice anyway, I worked out a way to get into grand central, and got grandfathered in
03:20
Sorry was literally crawling around in a roof cavity
@Andrew Next to
@WesleyDavid Well, by "cold" I mean about 10c and raining
But I consider that cold
@MarkHenderson That's cold.
@WesleyDavid When I go for my run at 6am the grass is still soggy and there's often a fog hovering over it
@WesleyDavid @MattBear: those arn't grease stains, those are pictures of a hat and something else being visible through the paper.
I like to think I'm a serial killer, appearing out of the fog
@JourneymanGeek Shuttup and leave me to my hideously perverse thoughts.
03:33
My ubiquiti gear arrived today
It's every bit as good as I hoped - even though it's a bit dumbed down and doesn't have quite the same level of stuff as something from an aironet etc
Someone vote down Mark's answer to illustrate tactical downvoting (and make him squirm)
1
Q: Why can't you change your vote after X days?

Steve BennettI don't get it. I'd like to remove my downvote against an answer on this question: Use SSH hostname aliases in browser But I can't. Someone has actually coded a feature to prevent you doing this after some time threshold. Why?

@Ward whatever, I literally just got an "offensive" flag against one of my comments
So a downvote on meta isn't a big deal ;)
@MarkHenderson One of the comments on that post? Or somewhere else?
@Ward haha somewhere else
"Ah. Jeff Atwood. Again. Should have guessed."
03:37
I'm not going to go and dismiss my own flag though, that would be a bit rude of me
is this one us or webmasters?

Q: having subdirectories with nginx not managed by wordpress

joel_gilI have setup an nginx + php + wordpress site at www.example.com When I go to example.com on my browseer I see my wordpress blog as I expect and can work with it flawlessly, no problem there. But now I wanted to keep using nginx for other webapps without losing the blog. Ningx content root is at ...

@MarkHenderson That line would fit better on the star wall if you said "I like to think I'm a serial killer, pooping out of the fog."
04:01
So gentlemen, if she smokes, does she poke
04:48
@MarkHenderson Wat. Can you see who flagged you?
@Ward Stop changing your avatar your moose herding tart!
I'm gonna leave it as this one for a while, to make you all jealous that Iain didn't buy you a cute toy.
@Ward Man, I bought you a duck, @Iain buys you a plushy. The hell.
I thought I was your sugar daddy!! =(
You shoulda put that duck money into a fucking BIKE!
(although you don't get interest on bills stuffed into a seat tube)
@Ward Bikes scare me. I've seen things man!!
I almost bought a coffee table book about fixie culture.
True facts.
I'm up to 54km for the month, roughly... the same distance that Iain's done wheeling his bike to and from the garage.
The only fixie riders who deserve any respect are the ones with true track bikes with no brakes.
04:53
@Ward He can't help it that he lives in the ninth circle of obscure country manours-with-a-u.
I mean, you have to respect total idiots.
I'm actually thinking of getting a cheap one just because.
It would remind me of my old BMX.
^ I would ride the hell out of that.
dies
@WesleyDavid: thats a very safe bike. Its so hideous nothing would crash into it.
05:24
@WesleyDavid Normally I can, cos Im a mod, but I can't see who flags comments
05:45
good morning
07:32
@Iain that's one of the guys on lego.se...that's dedication.
@tombull89 it's awesome
I'm impressed it's that many, as well.
I don't have any Lego any more I gave it all away to a nephew years ago
I've got back into some of the Technic sets recently...didn't quite realise how intricate and detailed they can be with fully-fuctioning gearboxes and such.
08:02
ah, TomTom.
Why do you ask us whether you can install linux on them? My answer would be no - you obviously have not enough knowledge about linux to evaluate whether the blades are compatible so it is a bad idea. Rather hire a sysadmin to install linux. — TomTom 15 mins ago
At least he's consistent. You know where you stand with a TomTom comment.
It's a bit of an odd question - Unless their idea of what constitutes a "blade" is very different from mine then why would they possibly think that you might not be able to install one OS on half the blades and a different OS on the other half.
@RobM I looked at that, wept, and moved on
@RobM I agree. I can't tell what they're really trying to do or why they think it would be a problem.
@JennyD I think it's a good example to illustrate your 'not knowing the basics ... comment on mSF
nod
@Iain Although I think that the original "hire a sysadmin" response was less hostile.
08:16
Yep
To be fair, there's nothing wrong with not knowing something and asking about it. That's how we all learn, and it's much better to ask beforehand rather than ask "I tried this and now how do I DR it now its failed".
Unless they're asking if the Linux systems will still be a member of the Windows HPC cluster afterwards. But that's crazy talk...
True. Lack of knowledge and a desire to remedy that is perfectly fine. The problem is when ignorance is coupled with a sense of entitlement... and then it crashes with a bofh mindset. (Mind you, I've been in the bofh community for nigh on twenty years, but I do try not to bring the attitude with me outside of it.)
Off- or on topic?

Q: How to export mailing list archive from java.net?

Pavel TankovI am the list owner of several mailing lists in http://java.net/nonav/projects/project_name/lists How can I export all mail archives for all mailing lists (that I am owner of) from java.net, so that I could then import them in a fresh Mailman installation into newly created corresponding mailing...

@tombull89 Or too localized?
@tombull89 both. Exporting -> talk to oracle. Importing into mailman -> arguably on topic.

hi guys, how do I the linux?

@Olipro Take it for a nice meal, go back for a glass of wine and move fro mthere?
I accidentally the whole Linux

Linux linuxed my Linux once :(
ouch
bah, I think today will be the day I bother to setup a VM to test out 3.8 with grsecurity
really need to get the fsck off of 3.2
I'm hoping today will be the day that Microsoft finally get back to us to tell us why their own proxy server product and their own AD federated services won't play nicely together to allow Office 365 users to login to Lync.
Lync... Windows Live Messenger Corporate Edition
Dan
Dan
@RobM Because the only times the two teams ever see each other is when they exchange abuse in the cafeteria
@Olipro It's really good, actually
08:42
Lync is very nice @Olipro - when it works.
@dan I suspect you're right.
gawd, you're going to make me setup a server now aren't you
Dan
Dan
@RobM It's certainly my understanding of the internals of MS
What's annoying is that everything worked... until we turned on ADFS integration.
@dan yep. There doesn't seem to be a definitive set of documents that say "do this on Forefront and that on your ADFS setup and it'll work" which shouldn't be too hard to do if they talked to each other about it
@Olipro if you want to check out lync then use the online/office 365 version, to save the hassle of setting up servers. Just don't try to get ADFS working, it's a right pain
Morning all
Dan
Dan
Wish I could help, but I don't have nearly enough exposure to this stuff. We've only got one site on 365 with ADFS, but they don't have Lync yet
08:45
what a crazy 2 weeks
morning
@JennyD I didn't think so either, unfortunately people failed to walk away at that point and the rest ...
@dan it seems to be pretty random. We've already got MS Support looking at it... and looking very puzzled
whoot hit 2.5K rep today
28 mins ago, by RobM
Unless they're asking if the Linux systems will still be a member of the Windows HPC cluster afterwards. But that's crazy talk...
it seems that's what the OP wants to do so installing Linux is a ruse
Well, I'm using Linux for 10+ years and I manage over 30 *nix servers, so I know how to "install" it; compatibility is not an issue here. My question was: does the headnode (which is a Windows HPC machine) could submit the jobs to those nodes? I was thinking that Ms may have released some kind of kernel modules to let Linux integrate with his HPC infrastructure, thus the question on the best distro for the job. — Matteo 11 mins ago
08:49
Oh God
@RobM ok so your prescience is turned right up - what are tonight's numbers going to be ?
@Iain ... Well, see, this is what I like about SF. I can always find some question that makes me feel happy to not be working with that stuff/person.
22
@iain whatever I selected on my lucky dip of course
@JennyD AAAAAAA+ quality comment, would star again.
@RobM Thanks :-)
@JennyD beware though. Too much of that and you turn into a bitter, disappointed cynic and start becoming a regular here.
09:04
@DennisKaarsemaker Someone should have told me that twenty years ago...

Dan
Dan
Can't help but feel that @JennyD is going to fit in around here
3
aye
As the OP updated their HPC question I just cleaned up the comments
09:21
And I deleted my answer now that it's irrelevant
blimey
Dan
Dan
I have no idea why you'd want to,really, though
Mind you, I've never used HPC so what do I know!
I don't see the point of having a working cluster then converting half its members. I could see the point of integrating a new cluster with one you already have, sure, but that's not the same thing really
Or I could see the point of converting the whole cluster if you had a workload that was more suited to another platform.
Dan
Dan
@RobM Exactly what i said to him - strange request
09:35
Yeah, I mean he must be essentially creating two HPC clusters and maybe having a gateway to submit jobs between them?
Dan
Dan
Thanks for the link. Good question BTW... we use our cluster to perform data analysis — Matteo 3 mins ago
Politician answer :D
09:53
So, bear with me here, what's the difference between Hyper-V and HPC?
@tombull89 what's the difference between a car and a banana?
One's a vehicle, one's a fruit...
Hyper-V is Microsofts virtualization platform. HPC is an abbreviation for High performance computing.
So you can add nodes to the cluster so they all work on the same task?
"Microsoft HPC" seems to be their implementation of HPC middleware, such as a job scheduler
@tombull89 generally, that's what HPC is all about.
09:57
I had a vision of the HPC machines running one "giant" vm that uses the resources of all machines in the cluster.
"HPC Pack 2012 delivers enterprise-class tools, performance, & scalability for a highly productive HPC environment, providing an integrated cluster environment featuring the HPC Job Scheduler, Message Passing Interface v2 (MPI2) and Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) interactive application support, cluster management & monitoring tools."
neh, that's the monolithic supercomputer idea. Doesn't scale.
Modern HPC clusters are all beowulf clusters, running jobs on many nodes in parallel. Usually using something like MPI for coordination, and a job scheduler
