It's a bit of an odd question - Unless their idea of what constitutes a "blade" is very different from mine then why would they possibly think that you might not be able to install one OS on half the blades and a different OS on the other half.
To be fair, there's nothing wrong with not knowing something and asking about it. That's how we all learn, and it's much better to ask beforehand rather than ask "I tried this and now how do I DR it now its failed".

@dan yep. There doesn't seem to be a definitive set of documents that say "do this on Forefront and that on your ADFS setup and it'll work" which shouldn't be too hard to do if they talked to each other about it
@Olipro if you want to check out lync then use the online/office 365 version, to save the hassle of setting up servers. Just don't try to get ADFS working, it's a right pain

Well, I'm using Linux for 10+ years and I manage over 30 *nix servers, so I know how to "install" it; compatibility is not an issue here. My question was: does the headnode (which is a Windows HPC machine) could submit the jobs to those nodes? I was thinking that Ms may have released some kind of kernel modules to let Linux integrate with his HPC infrastructure, thus the question on the best distro for the job. — Matteo11 mins ago
I don't see the point of having a working cluster then converting half its members. I could see the point of integrating a new cluster with one you already have, sure, but that's not the same thing really
Or I could see the point of converting the whole cluster if you had a workload that was more suited to another platform.

neh, that's the monolithic supercomputer idea. Doesn't scale.
Modern HPC clusters are all beowulf clusters, running jobs on many nodes in parallel. Usually using something like MPI for coordination, and a job scheduler
