@DennisKaarsemaker Didn't feel like answering
@ewwhite lazy bugger :P
@freiheit possibly. All the failures I've ever experienced have been "disk light off, heartbeat light amber and flashing"
but I've not had one go evil-clicks-of-doom on me in a Dell.
@voretaq7 It also seems to have passed on some kind of error to the OS that led to VMware misbehaving...
@DennisKaarsemaker He is a capricious god
doing a RAM upgrade on a R710 tomorrow. It's got 4x 1GB in it already and we're adding 4x 2GB. I think it's a tri-channel memory machine.
18:01
@JoelESalas ZOT
@tombull89 Why so little?
@JoelESalas It runs the schools Intranet/VLE server. That's what the devs say we need to run the new version, so that's what the schools getting.
We paid ~£190 for that new RAM.
@DennisKaarsemaker I'm so wishy-washy on ZFS these days..
@tombull89 Fools! They could have asked for more RAM and run a video game server too
@JoelESalas If I wanted a video games server I'd create a VM on one of our blades :P
Although three of our ESXi Hosts have only 32GB, and the fourth has 16...

We have a strange fetish of trying to keep the working set of data in memory
@ewwhite Why the change of heart?
@84104 requires so much thought and planning... too easy for people to mess it up
well... I know how to use cygwin now. Sort of. This has not been a good day.
@ewwhite There are valid substitutes to things that don't require thought and planning?
@84104 It requires a LOT of thought and planning.
18:10
@ewwhite pure flash eh.. oh well, if the customers pay the dough then I don't see why not
@pauska spit
and nobody has a "this will work" formula for ZFS.
@voretaq7 ?!
@pauska Flash.
instinctive reaction.
@pauska I think we'll buy a big one and it'll be a shared device for multiple clients.
18:10
It's the camel in me.
@ewwhite worst homepage in the history of man though
@pauska yeah... FLASH
@ewwhite did they consider other vendors?
@pauska Yes.. these guys will give us a working proof-of-concept
Seems well-engineered
18:13
Except the controller heads are CentOS?
everybody does that these days
no point in writing your own OS
Seems it.
saying that f.ex EMC VNX is a windows storage server is nearly as faulty like saying ESXi is Linux
you just use the kernel and a minimal userland to fire up your own modules and services
@pauska ESXi isn't linux?!?! ;)
getting an all-flash array makes sense tho.. you have many customers who can share the price and get small luns to run their ultra high end stuff on
18:15
@pauska definitely. We needed the right plan
just beware - there are many vendors now moving away from all flash and rather go the hybrid model with extremely fine-grained tiering/deduplication
stuff like Nimble.. and others I can't remember the name of
With all the hubbub about virtual desktops, we had our first bootstorm test with 400 PCs turning on at about the same time, and there was no issue. Link clones, I think.
@Basil yeah, read cache (and buttloads of it) with linked clones helps alot
@ewwhite and especially this if you're looking at hybrid options - theregister.co.uk/2013/04/09/blind_spot
it gives a little view of why the oldschool SAN products can't keep up
18:34
@pauska Isn't it all busybox now at boot time, because people were crying about GPL violations?
I downloaded that buyers guide PDF
let me know if you guys want me to forward it
so you dont have to register for spamz
@MDMarra that might be, yes

hai gais
I've decided to be gay now
yuuup
seems great, in theory
chill with your bro, watch football, play some Halo,
dont talk about shit
soup up cars, no PMS
no "cuddling"
no drama, no whining, no bitching
Next stop: Divorce court!
woot!
@MattBear hahahahAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHA HA!
Fantasy world: You live in it!
19:03
@voretaq7 I like my fantasy world...
only problem is... I cant figure out the mechanics of it
@MattBear Dick goes in butt, it's pretty simple actually
2
@MattBear Look at the star wall. You'll figure it out.
dont like dudes, kissing a dude=gross, buttsexxors=gross...
found out my wife has BPD...
@MattBear Ok I'll bite, mainly because I don't want to google it at work
borderline personality disorder
needy, angry, psycho
19:07
@MattBear gay men?
@MattBear Isn't that why you liked her in the first place
@JoelESalas Penis goes WHERE?!
@JoelESalas she hid it pretty good untill we got married
They make pills for that.
Effectiveness: Debatable.
Side Effects: Unpleasant.
Chance of Kittens: Low.
@voretaq7 im thinking some healthy dosage of spousal abuse when she fly's off the handle should correct it
19:09
@MattBear And when was this diagnosis made?
@MattBear Do you have kids?
@MattBear yes but this too has unpleasant side effects (of the legal variety)
@WesleyDavid last night, from the marriage counseler
@WesleyDavid and yes
@MattBear ಠ_ಠ
BPD :(
@MattBear How many how old?
19:12
@WesleyDavid 1, 6 months
@MattBear Post partum depression, as well, mayhaps?
@WesleyDavid no.. she was like it prior
@WesleyDavid I'm hoping we can get a handle on it before she gets older and see's the fights and shit, otherwise im gonna leave
@MattBear ...howwww about you delete that just in case a lawyer ever goes trawling the webs.
@MattBear I have a girlfriend with borderline bipolar.. I know how you feel
In the future.
19:14
(4 years together now)
@pauska Does she recognize it and takes steps to control it?
I know that it's tough and you'd like to just get out, but just stick to it man.
@pauska Not to be rude, but... why?
@WesleyDavid More than before.. still waiting on getting proper counseling
@pauska =/
19:15
@JoelESalas Because you love the person?
@pauska im sticking it out for now, but if it starts affecting my daughter, thats when some serious changes are gonna be made
though I'm thinking a taser might help... just reboot her OS when she starts glitching
My ex fiancee has BPD
That's what she's my ex.
@MattBear I agree. Sometimes someone has to lay down the law and get the facts straight. People with psychic issues do all they can to cover it up and pretend it's not there, because they are so afraid of losing everyone they love (and themselves in a depression) if they are open about it
And trust me, getting her to be open about it to you and family/close friends is a HUGE and important step..
getting professional help comes after that
@pauska now that I know wtf is going on, I think that will help some, but I wont tolerate dragging my daughter into it.
From my understanding, and speaking with my own therapist - BPD can be managed with cognitive therapy
But they have to want it
19:19
@Cole from experience you can deal with mild forms of bipolar disorder that way. Most of the time.
@voretaq7 yep
just talking about it openly is a huge help
I thought my GF was spiteful and mean. Turned out she was hungry.
@MattBear and - if she opens up about it then you can to.. to others than us strangers
that will help you alot..
Seriously, she's hypoglycemic but this whole time I was like "I guess I have to learn to deal with this"
@JoelESalas did you discover this before or after she bit you and took your lunch? :)
19:20
find a support group - talking to someone in the same situation has helped me
@Cole from what I understand, and it makes a lot of sense, what they do is base facts off of emotions(and change and modify facts), instead of emotions being based off of facts
I would probably have left her if it wasn't for me finding out that the wife of a coworker has bipolar..
a tranq gun...
does she get depressed?
like not being able to get out of bed etc? usually after a large fight
@pauska somtimes, but not often
its more, unreasoning anger, fear of abandonment, projection, etc etc
19:24
@MattBear ok. does she sometimes gets OBSESSED in material things? Like the world is going to end unless she can buy a (very expensive) item? I know, women are weird that way - but think 10x the normal women obession..
going from 0-200mph in .06 seconds
@pauska somtimes
those two things I just said are marks of depression
so don't take BPD for granted, this could be bipolar
it's a very complex diagnose
could be, but isnt bipolar marked by longer periods at either end of the spectrum?
just google some, there are lots of info out there these days
@MattBear yes and no - there are variants
with her, its more of being unable to control, manage, or understand her emotions
and believing those emotions are fact
19:27
Forgive if this was already posted: npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2013/04/16/177468359/…
@jscott lol, top speed .02 mph!
at 120 RPM
@ewwhite if you're OK without SIOC - take a look at the Tegile Zebi HA2800
@pauska googled it, definitely not bipolar
@ewwhite it's like an enormous fast cache box, that can tier to HDD if you want it.. the general point is that inactive data nearly never stays on HDD
@MattBear ah alright.
@pauska though I could be bipolar :p
@pauska shes consistent, just blows up fairly regularly
and lacks any sort of logic while shes blowing up, then calms down and apologizes
19:32
Hiss!!
The Internet Archive's sites are offline for scheduled maintenance and upgrades.
@MattBear Hmm... I have a family member who does the blowing up. Heard an apology three times in 30 years. Wonder what that means...
@ewwhite OH NOES, THE INTERNETS DOWN!!!!
@WesleyDavid in denial
what's up gurus
how goes the struggle?
@MattBear I do feel for you
19:41
@ewwhite One of my friends bought "sold-out" concert tickets using a link from the Internet Archive
ESC no longer stops GIFs in FF???
@ChrisS works for me
Verions? I'm on 20.0.1
status:unreproducable
17.0.5
19:47
20.0
gifs don't stop
Apparently it was removed in 20.x
There's already several add-ons to restore the functaionality
The thing I hate most about new firefox (on OSX) is you can't disable ctrl+Q
@WesleyDavid LOL
bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=614304 <-- Apparently they threw the baby out with the bathwater
They were "fixing" a 3 year old non-bug and the Animated GIFs got caught in the crossfire somehow.
@ChrisS sounds like a typical FOSS project
19:53
@ChrisS ditto for me (64-bit Win 7, FF 20.0.1)
The Escape button no longer has any function in FF so that webapps can use it.
But what it used to do, can no longer be done.
Well...damn.

Q: Server 2012: how to plan for storage failover?

gooberThe Stuff I have the following components to work with: two rooms two beefy Dell R510s, one in each room two EMC VNXe storage devices, one in each room. The goal Ensure that if one server room goes down, VMs can continue to come back up & function. Thinking: install Hyper-V on these two...

more of a hyper-v question than a storage one
@Basil Too bad we can't do one word answers anymore, he already has the right idea
addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/superstop <-- FF add-on that makes Shift-Esc do what Esc used to do. Simple as pie.

What do we flag WAMP questions as? OT?

Q: WAMP server won't load php_curl extension

neubertphp_curl is enabled as a PHP extension in WAMPs menu. When I view the php.ini file for WAMP curl is uncommented. eg ;extension=php_bz2.dll extension=php_curl.dll And yet phpinfo() makes no mention of curl. Even after I "Restart All Services". Any ideas?

I'll have to make myself a webpage or something with links to all the FF Addons I typically use. The list is getting big enough I'm not sure I'd just remember them
@tombull89 Depends on what they're doing exactly... But if they can't get it working they're almost certainly not an admin, cause the software really ain't that hard to install.
I have a question about our production XAMPP servers...

I have New Tab Homepage, AdBlockPlus, and now SuperStop. That's it.
Adblock Plus, Download Statusbar, Firebug, Greasemonkey, Live HTTP Headers, PassIFox, SuperStop, YSlow, and User Agent Switcher
20:17
@MattBear uh...
LOL
@DennisKaarsemaker so I'm noticing some performance issues, we have about 400,000 hits per day, and its running a little slow
@DennisKaarsemaker I like that one lol
400.000 hits per day is far too little for me to even pretend to give a fuck
to really give a fuck better measure hits in EUR rolling into my bank account
I think this is appropriate:
20:23
@fuero pssh, I dont deal in monopoly money
@WesleyDavid lol
At the very least, shoot yourself
@WesleyDavid way too high pitched for me
Apparently if you DO actually bother to use Server Manager there's some decent info if you scroll down...lol
20:29
@ewwhite: ♥ If you look at a datastore IO graph in vCenter Operations Manager, what does that grey area behind the line in the graph mean?
20:41
I can't believe it. There are still people using the grc.com "scanner"

Q: Weird iptables patterns of closed ports

ebarchScratching my head over this one...I'm using Shields Up while proxied into a server I just setup with Rackspace. Here's my iptables config: *filter # Allow all loopback (lo0) traffic and drop all traffic to 127/8 that doesn't use lo0 -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT -A INPUT ! -i lo -d 127.0.0.0/8 -j ...

@syneticon-dj Haven't seen it in years, but is it worse than not doing it at all?
@MattBear I can't tell if you're joking about running XAMMP
@Adrian it surely is. It is ... just bad.
Hey guys, I'm trying to grab the OnTap 8.1 CM sysadmin guide (support.netapp.com/documentation/docweb/…). I can't grab it - NetApp's site is timing out. Work better for you? :)
@JoelESalas im joking, its a LAMP stack, with the mysql server seperated
20:49
Also is this just an American thing, where they think wanting something long enough automatically entitles you to have it?
@MikeyB that page doesn't time out, but their oracle thing does. Probably not enough iops on a filer :-)
@JoelESalas thats a fact
@JoelESalas I've wanted Jessica Alba for 15 years or so, therefore I am entitled!
@JoelESalas I think that at some level, it's a very human thing. But most cultures generally don't encourage it as much as ours does.
@Adrian Ok just checking, it's just weird to me
People buy something out of their means "Well I've wanted one for a long time, so I figured it was about time"
Uh how does that make this a wise decision
@JoelESalas Considering the way we deify stupidity on the idiot box, nothing surprises me much anymore.
20:59
@JoelESalas if you manage to pay for it, it brings you happiness, and it diddnt mean leaving your kids homeless and on the streets, was it really out of your means? Or did you sacrifice some luxuries for a different luxury?
@DennisKaarsemaker Letter, Legal, or A1 size filer?
@MattBear I don't think Americans understand sacrifice
@Adrian you old fart
@JoelESalas explain
@DennisKaarsemaker Well, Yes. I am, in fact.
I really hate it when recruiters send me job descriptions where they've sliced the title and employer out.
21:02
@Adrian Most recruiters do that, in fact I've only seen recruiter communication without the employer information.
@WesleyDavid That's a shit recruiter and a shit job
Hi all, would Windows Server 2008 R2 Web Edition be ok for running a dedicated game server?
Or do I need the Standard edition of Server 2008?
@WesleyDavid Weird. I don't like that at all. Especially considering how many calls I get for the same position with a given employer.
@loosebruce Depends on what it's designed to run on?
@loosebruce FYI, Gaming stuff is a bit OT for ServerFault.
21:03
Try both then come tell us which one worked
@Adrian What if he's offering a service?
its a case of saving $35 on my monthly dedicated hosting plan
@loosebruce Tell us (lie to us) it's for a service you're running and we can continue
@JoelESalas This is chat. Guilty until proven innocent. And you'll note I was fairly polite.
Its for a service I am running
@loosebruce Totally depends on the package. I know games like CS Server need Windows Server.
21:04
the service is called Fubar Uber Gaming Server
I will be installing Steam and then installing ArmA 3
@loosebruce Web edition has limited services, and also from a CAL perspective you can only run web workloads on it , so inet_anon user access.
needs more words
Fubar Uber Nerd Gaming Ultra Server
F.U.N.G.U.S.
I like it
I'd actually be very surprised if it worked on Web Edition.
ONCE AGAIN. THOU. SHALT. NOT. KILL. WHAT'S SO FUCKING HARD ABOUT THAT, PEOPLE???!!!
21:08
hah...so I see that HopelessNoob got a time out...mouthing off to users via question comments?
@TheCleaner Dunno - I haven't heard the last word on it.
@TheCleaner He's like WHY IS THIS SO STUPID? YOU'RE STUPID AND YOUR JOB IS STUPID AND YOU DO IT STUPIDLY
@TheCleaner Well, maybe if we behaved better, we'd be able to get a FAQ approved that reasonably reflected the community of contributors.
Oh right. There I go smoking dope again.
lol @JoelESalas - that sounds like him...
@Adrian - "I don't believe in FAQs'. I just believe in me." -HopelessN00b. A good point there. After all, he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. I'd still have to outsource my coding to India.
@TheCleaner Heh. I have a long-running and rather vocal beef with .SE Community. Unsurprising since they consider us the stubborn retarded step-sibling of StackOverflow.
21:19
Well SO is programmer centric and founded to be so.
but you want to know for sure, download a copy of web edition, install it in a VM, and test your setup
personally, I would advise going with the standard edition, the money saved is most likely not worth the complications
Blegh.. memory management is so much like voodoo. I've got a host which in /proc/meminfo shows a lower Committed_AS to AnonPages. No idea how or why that would occur.
21:34
@TheCleaner HAHAHA
21:50
@DennisKaarsemaker Your regex cause my servers to catch fire!!!!
4
@ewwhite Pics or it didn't happen.
@Adrian they're only half wrong. We're not that stubborn :-)
@ewwhite You're an experienced cyclist. Got a good answer for this question?
7
Q: How can I mitigate the risk of public urination charges on long rides?

amcnabbQualifying offenses for the sex offender registry can include public urination. Though the chance may be small, the potential consequences are severe. Unfortunately, bladders are apparently designed in ignorance of these laws. A few obvious solutions, such as intentionally becoming dehydrated or ...

@freiheit piss your pants
@MattBear I do that even when I'm not cycling
22:02
@JoelESalas keeps people from sitting too close to you?
@MattBear Like Zoidberg's ink bladder yes
@freiheit WHY DO YOU EVEN NEED TO ASK?
Just plan your route
Or find a goddamn bush
fast forward to around 6:05
@MarkHenderson Or a small cluster of trees...
@MarkHenderson Honestly, I just thought the question was funny.
@freiheit That's not funny, my brother died that way.
22:08
@JoelESalas Ok... I think some more explanation is going to be required...
He died peeing on the side of a road?
@MarkHenderson Or maybe died attempting the not stopping riding to pee technique?
well that was annoying...
@MattBear ...okay.
some ftp users passwords diddnt transfer over correctly when I migrated servers
22:16
@MattBear On a related note, I love software that uses FTP for updates. So easy to steal the passwords...
HP StorVirtual, I'm looking at you
@MarkHenderson Wait... FTP doesn't stand for File Transferring Protection? =(
@MarkHenderson we use SFTP, so its a little better
@WesleyDavid Sweetieplum; did you get your TimTams?
@MarkHenderson No. =(
@freiheit Stop interrupting my Foamy marathon.
22:20
@WesleyDavid Let me just... walk over to the fridge... oh, look! Tim Tams...
@WesleyDavid Some of the lyrics are close to things Foamy would say. "I hate everyone."
@MarkHenderson :'<
It might be physically impossible for me to get latency of < 200ms to the US (damn you speed of light), but my latency for a TimTam is about 10 seconds. Or 3 minutes if I have to walk to the shops
So powershell gurus, is there some built-in function that will add the proper escape characters \ to a string I am passing as a get-wmiobject -filter? as int I have something like \\?\Volume... and it needs to be \\\\Volume?\\... for get-wmiobject to be happy.
wah, is there any straightforward way to check why a PPTP connection is not establishing on a Windows client?
22:23
@Zoredache I thought PS escape was `?
@Zoredache doesn't using single quotes to enclose the backslashes ('\\?\blah') help?
@MarkHenderson Yes, powershell has a escape of `, but apparently when you pass a WQL filter to you must escape the escaped string to make wql happy.
@Zoredache orite
I was hoping there was something simple like wqlescape($foo) or something.
Ref: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj679341.aspx

USING THE ESCAPE CHARACTER
WQL uses the backslash (\) as its escape
character. This is different from Windows
PowerShell, which uses the backtick
character (`).
...
In some case, the backslash also needs to be
escaped.
@Zoredache Or perhaps wqlescape(wqlescape($foo))?
22:30
@kevin How did the meeting go?
dooo it (might not be SFW, depending)
@Zoredache in this case just "\\unc\path" -replace('\\', '\\') (yes, it's two backslashes for both parameters to -replace
mainly due to the fact that the first one is parsed as a regex
@syneticon-dj -replace('\\', '\\') is hilarious, somehow...
Powershell tends to be that all the time.
It took me a while to bend my mind around it. Got all twitchy in the process.
(I say that, but I have code in production right now with \\\\\\1 in it, which is pretty hilarious...)
22:37
@freiheit We have that regularly in config files
\\\\servername is a common one
so anybody ever debugged Windows PPTP dialups? I just tried that and a failed connection created a monstrosity of nearly 5 MB of client-side "logs". Is there something sane which just tells me what phase of the PPTP exchange is failing why?
@syneticon-dj yeah, that works. I was hoping for something less ugly...
@syneticon-dj Not in a long time. PPTP is horribly ugly.
@Zoredache the troubleshooting surely is.
@syneticon-dj Ggrraaahhhhhhhhh I feel your pain so badly
We have a flaky PPTP VPN - I gave up troubleshooting it about a year ago; I just reboot the routers on both sides about once a week
22:54
@MarkHenderson It's a very old 4chan joke
If anything you should be pleased that you didn't get outed as a 4channer
@JoelESalas I just don't get 4Chan
I don't understand its purpose, or how it works
I understand you can get child porn there if you visit at the righ time
@MarkHenderson People put things up. Other people read them...
Another month, another collection of Java Critical Patch Updates...
@MarkHenderson "at the right time"... WUT
why don't you take a seat right over there?
23:38
rawr timtams
@WesleyDavid Did your timtams finally arrive?
@freiheit No. =(
@WesleyDavid Maybe you should console yourself with a bicycle... a shiny shiny bicycle...
Hi friends
23:56
eff this!!!

Q: Yum (CentOS 6.4) - Remove all Installed Packages

rtaincI need to clean my system and redo it all. Is there any easy way to get rid of every single package I've installed (to a point where it's CentOS minimal)? I can't remember all of the packages and yum list installed pulls up a list of 1,000s of packages. Thanks! Edit: I cannot reinstall CentOS.

A: Yum (CentOS 6.4) - Remove all Installed Packages

rtaincI had to reinstall CentOS... it was a waste of money for a CD drive, and the RAM went dead, but I've got the server up and running.

@Goatmale hello
How's the IT on your side of the fence?
