meh
@voretaq7 does bsd find have -maxdepth ?
@Iain -maxdepth & -d/-depth
When it comes to FreeBSD: man and handbook online
Everything is documented :)
just curious as I know Solaris doesn't
17:12
@pauska and Postgres.
there's a reason I use the software I use :-)
@pauska Just don't expect that documentation to match OSX. Even if they they should be.
@ScottPack Thats ok for me, I dont use OS X
@pauska Me neither. This was back in the 10.4/10.5 days when I was given a few XServes to manage. They're unix right?
mach kernel, BSD-alike userland but not sysv/posix compilant afaik
I wonder whos great idea in Cisco it was to buy Linksys
@pauska 10.4 and I think 10.5 conformed to the Single Unix Specification
17:16
I want to throw this POS Linksys switch out the window.. my office is at the 4th floor
or at least the open group said they did :P
I just spent 30 minutes configuring vlans on it (as there is no way to specify an interface range)
rebooted it, and WHAM - clean config.....
@pauska the same brainchildren who said "Buy Scientific Atlanta"
@voretaq7 I had a Scientific Atlanta MPEG2 encoder once.. it was extremly good compared to the price
rock solid afaik
@pauska It was actually really cute. Most of the time the standard binaries were exactly BSD code. The real fun was when they used either outdated or incomplete man pages.
17:20
@pauska my Scientific Atlanta experiences have been cable products -- awful.
I got in the habit of looking up the BSD man page online rather than using the ones installed on the system. Often the most useful options were otherwise un- or incorrectly documented.
for those that never made their user suffer with APG generated passwords
0
A: Creating random password

coredumpThe apg tool is kinda dated but still good for password generation. It supports sizing the passwords, password checking with dictionaries, generation of pronounceable or random passwords, has a built-in PRNG and /dev/random support and can generate various passwords on a bunch or on a shell scrip...

Anyone in the south boston area recommend an ISP, besides Verizon DSL?
@coredump I like apg personally.
@DanBig Are you in a FiOS area? Still Verizon, but 25% less suck than DSL.

The Apple iPhone team has sued The Apple iPad team for copying and patent violation.

@voretaq7, i'm not sure
haha
@Nel As long as this doesn't affect my iPad ship date I'm OK with that.
Nel
Nel
:D
im sure it wont..
but damn Apple.. sigh
I'm getting my smart cover on thursday apparently. iPad to follow :-)
@voretaq7 Let me know when you get words with friends.
Best app out there
17:38
@MarkM I'm only buying it for ForeFlight - using it on my phone is just too tiny. I'll probably find other uses for it too though :-)
Nel
Nel
@voretaq7 Have you looked at the new samsung tabby? Looks pretty sweet
with android gingerbready goodness
@Nel it's a nice tablet :)
Nel
Nel
Yup yup.. i've thought about buying a tab.. but i honestly dont have much use for one :(
i ordered an ipad the other day
just waiting for it to arrive
I told myself "I don't have a use for one"
then I went into the shops and played with a xoom and an ipad 2
and "do I need it" lost to "but I w-w-WANT one"
Everyone NEEDS an iPad. They are very useful.
Nel
Nel
17:45
Hehe
in all seriousness, there is an emotional appeal you get from the well made bits of hardware like the xoom and the ipad2 that you just don't get from looking at them. You have to pick one up to appreciate it. And then you're trapped...
I got an ipad 2 on day one but I can't say I really notice the difference between it and a v1 - the camera is nice enough I guess but the performance gain is barely worth the effort
for me the ipad 2 just felt so much more "right" in my hands than the first ipad
i was able to resist the lure of the first one and the new one had me smitten the moment i picked one up
Nel
Nel
Mainly because I got an iphone and i cant get myself to look at a bigger set of icons :|
because it's thinner but not much lighter than a v1 it feels denser
17:47
i'd like to see what amazon can do if the rumours about them playing with android are true
I've been on the hunt for a v1 ipad, not many for sale locally though.
if "content is king" then they sure have a lot of content
the 10" one?
I'm all for the v2 iPad based on size/weight & available apps
i was quite interested to see what the RIM tablet would be like. Turns out it would be like fail - fancy not having a proper built in mail client...
17:49
can't bring myself to spring the extra $200 for 3g though
Nel
Nel
hopefully HP wont fail and do something about WebOS
it would be nice to have a few good options about and webos is interesting
Nel
Nel
WebOS looks sawweeeet
I want Xoom or the Samsung 10" one
i know its obvious but its still true, the more good alternatives out there the better everyone will be for the competition
i liked the xoom... for me the ipad2 was better but i would have been happy enough with the xoom
17:51
@voretaq7 I had a v1 3g, used the 3g about 2-3 times ever, went for a non-3g v2
And now, after a forced recalc, I can say I am a member of the 5k rep club.
unless @ScottPack downvote me again
cool, @coredump
@Nel I turned down a freeby HP tablet this morning just to wind up my HP account manager :)
@Chopper3 I can see a use for 3g, but not with what Apple and AT&T are asking for it
Nel
Nel
@Chopper3 Oh man, i just raged
17:52
plus I have to use an external GPS for accuracy anyway, so the built-in GPS chip isn't worth the premium...
hehe, here in Brazil if you don't buy a 3G tablet you only use it on your home or at work
@coredump same here -- there's not a huge amount of (good) free WiFi in suburban NY
and even in urban NY they're usually so overloaded it doesn't make sense.
@RobertMoir I like the reference stuff. I have a Nexus One and I love anything I can just type fastboot oem unlock and start messing around with bootloaders and mods. Xoom is like that.
@coredump, i'm trying to hit 5k, but its slow goin
Nel
Nel
@Chopper3 just checking, a webos tablet?
17:55
yeah i used to be like that for phones, use to be active on the XDA developers website and all
then i realised i just wanted a phone that worked
but i was really tempted by the xoom, I actually wondered if it was worth making a point of getting an android tablet just to keep my eye on that and mix things up compared to my iphone. I think if the xoom had more native apps then I might have got it... or at least reduced the decision to flipping a coin to choose
@Nel yeah, poor fella turned up to a meeting with one for me to play with, sent him off with it - funny thing though is that he's actually in one of the new Nintendo 3DS adverts in the UK at the moment for some reason
@coredump In my defense, I never downvoted you the first time.
trolling your sales contacts?
@ScottPack we will never know!
@DanBig well it took me... 6 months I think
@coredump Unless you do an api call :)
17:59
@voretaq7 @Iain Added a regex version to that BCS find question (serverfault.com/questions/261325/…)
@ScottPack My will for revenge is not that thirsty
@coredump Beware the feller whose is.
@RobertMoir we have on-site HP people, so yeah we constantly rag them
fair enough
@SmallClanger that's also a good solution (offload the expansion onto find instead of ls|grep)

Oooooh I did not know about that. Whoops, starred
Ugh, i have a client with Verizon DSL. It's down. The "internet" light on the modem is off. The tech says she can't understand why its not working.
@Chopper3 government. I take a trip to vegas on a supplier's money, then they win a acquisition or procurement, I can be investigated or something.
18:10
well from what i hear about verizon the tech is probably truthful - they probably don't understand why the internet light on the modem has anything to do with connectivity
So many "do my job for me" questions today.

Q: Why is out corporate network very slow?

Michael StollHi, I'm administrating a small corporate network. It has a Windows 2003 SBS domain controller and about 10 client computers (Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7). Last friday the users started complaining about a "slow network". On some Windows XP machines the logon process is very slow. After the "...

The python documentation really annoys me...
@coredump I get that, but that's just pissing in the wind, deals get signed for lots of reasons, most involve some form of bribery, stopping you getting a free lunch is just senior management ensuring they get at the pork first
@RobertMoir, which frankly, is just sad.
indeed.
18:12
@Chopper3 Corruption here runs free, I just try to not involve myself on it.
you're just delaying the inevitable ;)
FFS, the modem's internet light is off, could that be an indicator that customer doesn't need to restart their servers?
@DanBig, not at all
@DanBig see the issue is all those guys in the call centers are too busy getting high and screwing the fugly chick in the bathroom
@DanBig That usually means the modem has lost sync, doesn't it?
18:14
@SmallClanger, i would think so. Restarting the modem should be sufficient enough test. Yet, they want me to disconnect it from the PIX, connect it to a PC, install the DSL software and try to connect.
F that.
I know you have to read from a troubleshooting script, but shit, have some common sense!
I'd go: Check cable -> Reboot modem -> Get a line test done -> Get an engineer out (in that order)
some people i spoke to who did that kinda job got warned from varying from the script even when their shortcut solution was 100% correct and helped the customer
18:16
Last time this happened at this exact site, V had been in that day for another customer, and inadvertently cut a line.
I wonder what type of customer these phone-monkeys actually hate the most; a customer who understands the technology or another crazy old lady
@Chopper3 Nope. I am not corruptible.
@RobertMoir that's shitty, what network
@Chopper3 at the VZ call centers they are all so high all the time it doesn't really matter to them
going by my friend's comments it was the person who explained how they were not only a MCSE but that bill gates personally marked their test paper... and then asked wtf dhcp was
18:17
@coredump everyone is, nobody's found your price yet, that's all
@RobertMoir do you need to know DHCP to get an MCSE these days? ;)

Q: Is it possible to install apc, memcached, nginx and varnish all together?

mcbeavJust wondering if it is possible to have nginx, apc, memcached, and varnish all running together. i am currently running on a dreamhost private virtual server, not that it matters. any input would be greatly appreciated.

I actually spoke to someone at BT broadband support who knew what they were doing last Friday. AND I wasn't on hold at all. I had to apologise because I'd gone downstairs to make a drink, anticipating being on hold for half hour and end up talking to a clueless buffoon.
@BenPilbrow sorry about that, I'll have them flogged and replaced with another John/Pushparaj in a jiffy
18:22
No please don't, he was REALLY nice!
More of those please
@SmallClanger I like it
Unlike Raj I spoke to from Barclays earlier. She fucking hung up on me before I even got a chance to tell her what my problem was and start yelling abuse at her
I know the head of broadband really well actually, I'll tell him, although it's funny that he can't get broadband himself at home, lives too far away from a bras
I had a local ISP a while back who, when I'd finished describing my problem, replied: 'Oh fuck, really?'

Q: Get individual message size for all Exchange 2010 users

user65712I need to make a report with a list of the largest messages on an Exchange 2010 server. I looked through the commands that I could use, and Get-MailboxStatistics isn't granular enough - I need to find individual messages >25MB and print their size, user account, and subject. This is for a migrati...

If anyone knows the Exchange 2010 cmdlets well, I'd appreciate the help
the other week we did an hour long conf call on one of our new conf call systems that does voice to text things and emails participants with the transcript after the call - apparently I used the work 'fuck' and 'dude' way too much :)
4
@user65712 3 minutes - really? 3 minutes from post to chat escalation - wow, really...
One thing I noticed with a similar system is how certain people speak in one long runon sentence, even if in email they know WTF a period is for.
@Chopper3 oh, I didnt really think of it as an escalation
I guess it is, sort of
oh, that's nice for you then
18:29
well I'll avoid doing that then
@user65712 I'm not entirely sure that's possible. The best I know of is per folder, with Get-MailboxStatistics
This must be the most vague question ever presented on StackExchange...
@user65712 Here's the deal. We just hang out here. That's all. Typically we don't do live help, etc unless we're just bouncing ideas off of each other. We hang out in here to get away from that throughout the day :)

Q: urgently please help

rickywhat system software and application software would you use in a network

hahahahahaha
18:30
@Hyppy Wow, that IS pretty vague.
What system software and application software would you use in a network. And would it slow down if you bound 2800 IP addresses to one NIC
5
@Hyppy CatOS.
@voretaq7 CatOS is dead :-P
@RobertMoir IPv4 or IPv6? :)
I would be tempted to reply and tell him that OS2 was what he needed
18:30
@RobertMoir very good, bravo
@Hyppy Nonsense, it has at least 8 more lives left :)
IPv6 and a belkin home router, of course
@RobertMoir Banyan Vines, or go the other way, 4-way mesh of Cisco Nexus 5k's
still not as bad as DecNet
though i have to admit banyan vines is a pretty decent attempt
i am having a headache, suddenly
And people wonder why IPX hung on so long.
18:32
<pulls pin> isn't Active Directory just Vines <throws>
keep talking. I'm re-loading...
serverfault.com/questions/261389/… - today is turning into fuckwittery-Monday
and considering its a tuesday....
3
ok that's a vote to close
sigh Need nicotine.
I may wake up early one Monday and make a dozen or so alts to ask questions just so I can see the reaction from @Chopper3. "Hay guyz, why are my Hyper-V VMs slow? I took four laptops apart to get the disks and make a really fast RADE set!"
18:39
@Chopper3 @RobertMoir IDK I'd have let that stand on the grounds that VOIP has thrust telecom shit squarely back in the lap of the sysadmin crowd...
i've got no problem with tackling telecoms questions - i admin a phone system as part of our workload too - but its a crappy question
That was out of our realm really
The only people who can "get back" a phone number is the telco that took it away...
i'd have no problem if he was asking how to configure it on his mitel or asterix or whatever box after getting it back
Yeah, I'd leave that
@RobertMoir Oh yes, lost a day there sorry
18:42
@RobertMoir Absolutely. I'd consider that a bit more on the networking side, at the very least.
@BenPilbrow even then it's a 50/50 shot - If they're not the telco that was assigned the number by NANPA it usually reverts to the original assignee when it's released.
@voretaq7 I'd agree, except that the answer to the question is almost cetainly "Your client is screwed, should have paid the bills" (as an aside, I'd be worried about getting paid myself if I were that consultant).
@ChrisS sometimes (frequently) "Yeah, you're screwed there" is the appropriate answer on SF :-)
Anything come of the question about 2800 IPs?
a book deal and a minor art cinema movie
6
18:54
@ChrisS lulz
that question was the craziest thing I read since "How to win friends and influence people 2011 edition, by TomTom and VGV8"
7
I'm sure we've had similar questions to that 2800 IP's before
why 2800? not a 2^x
@Chopper3 Because then at least one thing in the entire question would make sense.
4
@Chopper3 I think the magical explosion was the rollover from 2799 to 2800 :)
@RobertMoir I miss VGV8
18:59
but I can see someone misunderstanding say a /24 or whatever and wanting to setup 256/255/254 etc IPs but 2800, that's not a significant number in base-2800 ffs
@voretaq7 No, no. He was good up till 2800. Once he hit 2801 his server went tits up. And not in the good kind of tits way.
2
you do?
@Hyppy had that been asked on SO it would have been migrated to SF because it's about networks :(
@Iain I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry. Either way, you're absolutely right.
we just, fleetingly, had a video compression question - shat into space
19:01
@Holocryptic hmm, well I'll admit to not reading the question (I can't afford to go all rage-y)
for the regexp challenged this is handy strfriend.com
@voretaq7 I read 2800 IPs on one NIC and my head kinda assploded.
3
i think you're allowed
Could also be induced by nicotine withdrawals though ಠ_ಠ
@Holocryptic how goes the nicotine withdrawal ?
19:07
@Iain It'd be better if I hadn't forgot to change my patch this morning. Again.
But I'm on the second phase of stepping down, so it's not as bad as last time.
you managed it last time
@Holocryptic I had to quit drinking to quit smoking
there's no patch for working in IT and not drinking.
I had to quit going to the pub to quit smoking
@Iain oh the horror.
@MarkM I'm not really a big drinker. I just hang out here now.
19:09
Lucky
Hanging out here has the same mind numbing qualities of alcohol.
I haven't smoked in over a year, but every time I go to a bar and see someone smoking, I want to jump them and steal their pack
@voretaq7 it wouldn't be as necessary now as you can't smoke in pubs anymore
It also helped that I moved into my own place. I was living with one of my best friends before and he smokes like a chimney, which also makes it impossible to quit.
@MarkM That is true. I'm finding now that I'm not enjoying the smell of cigarette smoke anymore (which is a good thing, as it makes me not want to smoke). I still love me some hookah though.
19:11
Every time I walk by someone smoking it smells fantastic to me
it's my clothes the next day that make me happy that I quit
Yeah, it's nice not having stale smoke smell on my clothes
At $11 an IP those 2800 addresses could be valued at $30k+ :)
@DaveDrager What's up! I haven't seen you around here in a while.
I gave up smoking 10 years ago and before that didin't smoke in my car for many years but I still occasionally find myself reaching for a pack of fags when I go through a particular set of traffic lights as that was where I and a coworker had our last cigarette before getting to work.
Hey! Yeah been busy with a new job and forgot to stop on by
19:14
Not at WCU any more?
That's where you were, right?
@Iain a pack of what?
No I was at the Chester Co Bar Assn
@coredump It's a British-ism, not what you're thinking.
But I am going to school at WCU
Ahhh
19:14
I'm in Philly now
@Holocryptic dang
Nice. The commute sucks huh
@coredump fags = cigarettes
If I recall you are at a Univer in the city here? We should get together for lunch sometime.
I'm at La Salle
Not much in my area of the city except for, well, the school. hahah
@Iain I've gotten over the need for my hands to do something. So now I just have to get rid of the nicotine dependency and I think I'm good.
@BenPilbrow Ah, I forgot about that South Park episode
@DaveDrager, but yeah, we should grab some food sometime. I think @Zypher is in the city too, unless he moved already.
@Holocryptic Heard good things about Chantix. The gum worked for me a couple times, too. It's mostly about changing your routine, though. Do things in a different order, or change them completely. Drive with the windows closed, take breaks at different times, eat lunch somewhere else, et cetera.
Developing a drug habit helps too
5
So does punching whoever is closest to you when you get the urge.
@Hyppy Like I said, I don't feel the need to "go out and have a smoke" per se. But I do feel the chemical withdrawals. Less now than before. It's becoming more manageable. The patches have really helped. But they help more when you remember to put them on in the morning. @MarkM Heh.
19:25
Can anyone help with this meta.serverfault.com/questions/1417/… - I can't
need 60 more rep myself....
@Hyppy I also liked the commercial for Chantix. "Users may develop symptoms like depression or suicidal urges". Fun stuff.
@Iain makes sense to me. need 2 more people now.
@Holocryptic that's what normally happens when you quit smoking right?
I don't have sufficient rep
@voretaq7 Pretty much
@Holocryptic The suicide risk part was fairly well refuted, but since a slightly increase risk was found in a single study during clinicals, they have to say that. It's the same reason why you see all the 50 side effects noted on every pharm commercial. The hard part is distinguishing the truly "common" ones
19:31
@Hyppy Yeah, it's all CYA stuff. Still makes me a little wary of taking stuff like that. Or any drug for that matter.
@Hyppy the standard is "anything that's more than ±3% from a placebo" or something ridiculous like that
so one study that showed a +3.5% increase in suicidal tendencies from people who just had their nicotine taken away is enough to damn the drug :)
@MarkM yea i moved last week, although i'm down in philly a good deal still ... like saturday ... tore that shit up
@Zypher You should make an appearance at the beard and mustache club meetings, man. There's another one on 5/15
They're hilarious.
Sounds like its time for a Philly meetup.
i may have to journy down just for that
19:34
Oh I have a beard, can I come? Ha ha
just gotta buy the tix ahead of time ... amtrak REAMS you if you buy day of
@Zypher You are in NYC now?
My buddy Brandon is the president of the Philly chapter of the club. It's legitimately a front for cheap drinks and access to music/random events.
@DaveDrager yep
19:37
just saw on twitter that Liz Sladen (Sarah Jane Smith from Doctor Who) died today :\
The beard thing is a public event, anyone can show up. Usually after it ends a bunch of us hang around and continue drinking way later than someone should for a Sunday night.
Ah drats, I have a prior commitment that day. Maybe the next one.
@Zypher Reading about your experience commuting to NYC. Was almost in the same position but I have a family with 3 kids so didn't know what I would do. I didn't get the position, so problem solved :)
@DaveDrager there's nothing close to NY that is family friendly?
well, yes - affordable, no :)
If I were single I would get a Manhattan apartment in a second. I don't need much myself. But can't cram kids in there!
@DaveDrager actually princeton or new brunswick isn't that bad and a sub hour commut
and yes, would i do it again .. .probably but from philly ... it sucks everyday
19:50
@DaveDrager you buy a storage unit for those. :-)
yes, there is a downside, to a manhattan apt ... the bars are never closed
2
Sub-hour, man, I used to have a 5 min commute. With gas prices going so high, need to have better work/live proximity.
@DaveDrager That's why I need to find another job by end of summer. This commute is killer for me....
I clock in at between 20-60 minutes
If it was long, I wouldn't care. It's that it's so different every day for no apparent reason
I work 20 minutes from work
by car
well, at least when I had a car
wrapped it around a pole two weeks ago. Now I come to work with the missus, after dropping the kid at the school. Takes a little longer.
19:57
My new commute is about 45 minutes, half-hour of which is on the DC Metro. It's a LOT more expensive than my old 25 minute car-commute.
@MarkM At least 60 min for me (if there's no traffic and I can go 70-75 the whole way). 2+ hours at the outlier
I'd have a reliable 60 minute train commute, but I prefer my variable car commute
I just like having my car with me
Hmm, its things like that that make me go crazy.
@sysadmin1138 Metro fare is not pretty. Neither's the Metro cars themselves, really
I am working on a plan. Maybe next month my commute will be 20 seconds from my bed to my home office.
19:59
I got a writing gig I could have done for 2 days a week and paid 1600 a month, 0 commute... it was tempting but I couldn't live on that salary alone.
@Holocryptic Eh, it's public transit.
@sysadmin1138 I just got tickets to a Nationals v Phillies game in DC in august. The girl wanted to sit close enough to heckle Jayson Werth. No way you can get those seats in Philly. I'm right field, front row.
@sysadmin1138 true. They're building a new station down the way from me in Reston, which will make getting to the metro a lot easier if I need to go that direction.
Kinda excited actually
@MarkM That's cuz they're Nats tickets
20:02
Yep
Exactly
I'm working right by the Verizon Center so I've been having to wade through Caps fans on my way home occasionally.
I have friends that live in Alexandria, so we're going to just crash there that night. It should be a fun little weekend
Nice. @sysadmin1138 I love Caps games. So freaking awesome.
Heh. Bossman looked into getting season tickets. Waiting line of like 1400 people!
Soccer season?
20:04
@sysadmin1138 Yeah, they are on fire right now, and the Verizon center is sold out every night. My Old Man bought 4 tickets in December for a game in March. None of the seats were next to each other.
That's DC United, that stadium is somewhere else.
RFK stadium, in MD
pretty sure, at least
Yep, RFK.
Reading the ADMT guide is the reason why I hate everyone at Microsoft
It's clear, it's descriptive, it's thorough, and it still makes me want to punch every MVP that I can find right in the larynx.
Well in any case, if either @MarkM or @sysadmin1138 have free time at some point and are in the are and want to grab a beer, let me know.
20:11
@Holocryptic What area is that?
DC, I'm guessing.
Ahhhh, WTF?! Used my vote allowance?
@Holocryptic Yes! You only get so many.
Got ya, I'm in Philly actually
Yeah. I'm in N Va. Work in DC and Baltimore for now
20:12
@sysadmin1138 Wait, vote allowance as in upvotes?
No, stars
ohhh, whaaat?
note to self: talk about boobs early in the day, before people use up all of their stars.
3
Jeez, now I feel like my dick just got stepped on and my dog got shot. Not cool, man. And I don't even own a dog.
5
Well, guys. The CIO is out, the director of network ops is home already, so that can only mean one thing.
SEE YA!
<- still has stars left. Insufficient mention of boobs today.

My quitting time is 4:30

Schweet. I like when my backups test as good. It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling knowing that if my server blows up, and as long as the USB DAS RAID 5 box somehow escapes the conflagration, that someone, somewhere, will be able to restore the data. Because I'll have quit.

"Let's be clear", assholes. Ram it up your jam hole and fix the damned budget first before trying to come up with yet another cock-eyed scheme at another national registry
@Holocryptic this is HOW we fix the budget! Everyone must pay $LOTS for this magical new thing which will only cost us $LOTS+1 per person. We'll make a profit! No... wait, the other thing...
meh - that BCS guy with all the files needs a time machine
I don't see why people say Dead Space 2 is such good "survival horror". I've had games of peggle that were both more exciting, and scarier.
@RobertMoir, I don't know. I liked DS2
