12:12 AM
@BenPilbrow I do like that Evanescence song

WAIT! Was someone talking about jessica chobot?

@BartSilverstrim You know it. She's my dream girl

Gets Popcorn

....cute. Not the hottest I've seen though.

Meh, to each their own. Just means less competition for me

12:16 AM
My dream girl is... well, any.

You're in brazil. You probably see naked boobs just by looking out your window.

I mean c'mon! Into video games, anime, cosplay and she's (to me) hot. She's my kryptonite.

@BartSilverstrim right now this is almost true.

My stepdaughter has a friend that looks like Katie Wilson's sister.

@BartSilverstrim the one that can't sing?

12:20 AM
Shes' singing?

It's true, her voice leaves something to be desired. That aside I feel like I need to meet her regardless

The last thing on my mind would be listening to her sing.

@Holocryptic You like being humiliated and rejected by hot blondes?

Plus you had me at "roll that 18 sided die"

there are no 18 sided dices.

12:21 AM
@coredump There is a company that makes strange sided dies. I'm pretty sure they probably have an 18 sider.
I have seen a 7 sider.

how about Alessandra Torressani? youtube.com/watch?v=sKFW6QeGvns

@ChrisS It's just a fact of life. All I can do is hope I roll a high enough resist.

@BartSilverstrim She's reasonably attractive, yes.

@BartSilverstrim Yes please. I was all over that when I saw Caprica

I am the only one that considers Sasha Grey to be a serious dream girl?

12:23 AM
@coredump Links?

@coredump yes
@ScottPack totally NSFW

Is it NSFH?

Who's the porn star in MENSA?

Oh, ew.

12:24 AM
She looks...deformed.

Maybe Felicia Day on the nerd crowd. But I am not very knowledgeable on those nerd/geek famouse girls.
I also think they are all faking to be nerd/geek for popularity.

As girl-next-door I've enjoyed watching Nadine Sykora's videos. But I think if I actually met her she'd annoy me.

@coredump Like that girl who used to be on Attack of the Show and is on the Daily Show now?

Then for the atheist crowd there's Zomgitscriss.

@ScottPack Olivia Munn
The day I find a pretty girl that is able to discuss kernel internals with me is the day that I will fall in disgrace.
but from my personal experience, kernel internals and pretty girls don't walk together.

12:28 AM
Cute girls as competitive in the meritocracy of geekdom as we are...would probably be a pain in the ass to tolerate.

@BartSilverstrim that's the other problem :)
I don't discuss Tolkien with my wife
unless I want to start a fight or something

lol; smart man

DAMMIT
@#$%!!
sigh
Hey! Anyone want to guess the problem here?

@BartSilverstrim you discovered you love your toaster and it is probably a cylon?

12:32 AM
And two hours of tinkering with this dumb ASA I found the two stupid mistakes I was making... First, forgetting which interfaces the ping utility defaults to (the wrong interface in my case) and second forgetting the allow firewall rule to get traffic across the link... sigh

bbl, time to watch stuff

If I discovered a cylon I'd...well...is it a skinjob cylon? And a she?

@BartSilverstrim I got one on my FreeBSD box once where is showed Windows Explorer's My Computer, with little virus warnings for the C: drive and My Documents. Just makes me smile.

The best part of switching to a Mac: it's so blatantly obvious when malware authors are trolling Windows users.
@ChrisS: it would have made me smile but it had something in the script that made my FireFox window turn into a @#% postage stamp until I resized it, wondering what the hell had just happened.

Well half the time the displays aren't even accurate for Windows... but if you don't know better it's somewhat close.

12:34 AM
Have to admit though, I don't know what link/window did that.

Someone at work got a XP style (webpage) showing some dialog; we're running Win7... The user called me and mentioned how the screen looked "different" from normal screens.

Usually I don't stumble into those traps. Probably the talk of those D&D die earlier.
Anyone here have an iPhone?

I liked Glee better in the first season when they pretty much stuck to songs I at least like, and several that are really good.
@BartSilverstrim I refuse.

Oh, yeah, you're one of those...droid...people.
Anyone else?
@Chopper?

We've been switching everyone at work; I'm one of the few without a company phone though, mine's currently a Win Mobile 6.0 that I hate, next will be an Android though.

12:37 AM
I broke down and bought an iPod a while ago. I still haven't been able to scrub the taint off in the shower

New app to play with. Photosynth. Try it out if you like picture-taking on it.

I do have an iPod Nano, first gen.

It stitches images together into panorama shots.
And it's from Microsoft.
And if I heard right it's not available on windows mobile :-p
Maybe @Chopper3 would like to play with it if everyone else here is a iOS hater.

I love the pre-iTouch pods, work great, well except the first few generations that Apple wishes never existed; and they work with Rythmbox flawlessly.
I'm still buying music from ITMS, can't beat the AAC quality (Amazon would be a serious competitor if they'd up their MP3 collection to AAC).

shrug I used to have an iPod touch first gen. Have iPhone/Verizon now. Would not switch to another platform. Wife had a Moto Droid. I hated it.
Support Windows all day at work. Workstation at office is Linux. Use MacBook Pro at home. Saved my sanity.
Had DirecTV. Upped rates. Dropped them. Bought AppleTV gen 2. Works fine for us.
Use iPhone 4/Verizon + AppleTV + MacBook with iTunes. Happy camper.

12:43 AM
@coredump While I won't discuss Tolkien with the wife, we do watch a lot of nerd/scifi shows together. I find that acceptable.

"Kinkos.... What are we, homeless?"

Shit. That's me on end user support calls

le original

12:58 AM
hmm...any taryn southern fans? I think my mind is stuck on women at the moment.
Boobs. Apple. Tech support. Boobs. My mind is sharp as a...she's cute...
Oh, and the russian performer on a kids's show. </sits transfixed...>

@BartSilverstrim That about sums up my day to day, minus the apple part

Is it sad when your day gets summed up in something that sounds like it's from bash.org?

@BartSilverstrim no?

Just making sure.

gonna play the new Assissin's Creed now. BBL

2 hours later…
2:41 AM
what's Assissin's Creed...

It's a new game about how ass is sin.
So I've been told anyway.
@Melanie your picture scares me.

Lol, sorry about that.
:( No edits on Pro Webmasters, queue is full. Makes me sad because I want to submit a bunch of tags/edits/etc. :P

2:58 AM
omg it's a woman
let me check hell's temperature

Lol

feeling tired? no fear, I shall wake you up

jesus cody

yes?

Is this a parody of the Rebecca Black song?

3:10 AM
Nope, it's just a song that someone did.

Oh yeah, durr.. this is older. Wow.

It wakes me up every morning.

"Ha ha ha" @ 2:24 is hilarious.

oh...you made it that far in

Damn that girl has a lot of friends.

3:13 AM
And they let 12 year olds drive.
And every teenage music video must have a random black guy start rapping in it.

I just don't understand how these people have kids "drive" in music videos. Doesn't the filming crew ever think "This is so unnatural."

I think as long as they get paid they don't care what happens in the video.
"What? you want her flying an airplane? Can do!"

Checklist for teeny video:
Lots of friends
Underage driving
No parents
Random Black Guy
Well, you have 10 years olds doing air traffic control in the song "Rosa Helikopter"

forgot one, use autotune.

Oh yeah

3:17 AM
Oh and super rich parents to pay for it.

Yeah, although whatever Rebecca Black's mom paid, it wasn't too bad... like 2k or something. That's like sending your kid on a class trip or something, but not as wise of an investment, imo.

She make around $28000 but donated it all.
which is good. She only got lucky because she can't sing.

Maybe I'm bitter because I have a terrible singing voice, but I just don't understand people who promote their children's interest in being a singer/actress.

They should be promote computers not acting/singing skills.

Kids want to be doctors, nurses, teachers, movie stars, firemen, police officers when they grow up.

3:21 AM
and sysadmins in my case.

I suppose uploading it would be more constructive.

If I wasn't rocking this wallpaper and it was bigger I'd have that.

Ouch, that doesn't hurt your eyes?

Kind of. But I don't see my desktop much.
And it's such a good motto.

True

3:24 AM
and people like it a lot more then my Bug Bunny Debian one.

Yeah?

I like my "I accept no feedback" water bottle.

I'm looking for it righ tnow
can't find it. anyway it said "The way I run this thing you'd think I know something about it" and had the debian logo in stars.

lolz
I like wallbase for wallpapers
but right now the Doctor Who ones are taking all my spaces.

Idk what wallbase is. :S

3:31 AM
wallbase.cc
it's very nice.

I'm pretty lame, I usually just set my desktop to a plain teal.
I'm not sure why, just reminds me of my first computer I guess. Win 3.1 ftw
Not really ftw. But I was like 9 or 10 so I had no choice.

Most people I know are using this right now

I <3 Portal

For Portal 2 awesomeness.

Almost have played it through, but I didn't want to finish the game too quickly.

3:36 AM
I haven't got it yet. I timed games wrong as I bought Just Cause 2 last week.

I am almost all my time on Linux those days, so no time to get Portal yet

I only have Portal because I got it when it was free.

Yeah, I was pretty miffed when I found out that the whole "Steam is coming out on Linux" thing was a myth/hoax.

yeahhh me too :(

It runs well on Wine doesn't it?

3:40 AM
I have never really had luck with games on Wine.

I've only tried Civ 4
and Civ 5.
Both ran pretty well

I don't know about portal

oh shit I forgot to bring portal 2 home
:(
I was in such a rush to leave work

Eek, shame.
You are missing out. Not knowing about Portal is like not knowing about Star Trek...
... or Firefly.

Firefly was a pretty terrible show

3:44 AM
Firefly was awesome

It was watchable
I watched all of it on Netflix

There's some info on Portal for you.

so I guess terrible was too strong of a word

I just bootlegged it. :\

but I never got into that dude's stuff
josh weese or soemthing

3:44 AM
I don't know his other stuff.

buffy

Oh
LOl

and the other one that's similar

Joss Whedon

yes him

3:45 AM
Never seen Buffy.

since when do we let girls in here btw?
this place is usually like a boy's locker room 18 hrs a day

:(

I guess we can behave
:)
@CodyHarlow wow worst thing ever
@Melanie so Portal 2 is good?

Yeah, I like it a lot.

Is it longer than the first one?

3:58 AM
longer and harder
3
and I still talking about portal

Nah, I think it's easier than the first.

@coredump great star-bait
I can imagine they'd make it easier

Although one feature that presents a challenge is that in the second one, the chambers aren't as sterile (plants, broken things, etc) so it makes it harder to spot the obvious routes

Portal was kind of an inside joke for hardcore gamers
Portal 2 they want to market to everyone

I was a little disappointed in a lot of the jokes. I didn't find them as funny.

4:03 AM
I'm almost tempted to drive to work and pick it up

Like they tried a little too hard. But that's a problem with a lot of sequels. However, it wasn't devoid of hilarious elements.
I'd say not to, but damn it's a good game.

yea I'm not, it's a 35 min drive
and I need to be in bed in 50 mins

Eek
There's always tomorrow.

true, plus it's my rest day so I have all night to game
I didn't even finish the last game I played it was such a disappointment

last game I tried was DA2
and I stopped at the middle

4:10 AM
same @coredump
I think I've decided to just never buy another EA game
I'm almost ready to swear off AAA titles all together
they've been just a string of expensive disappointments
$5 for angry birds and I was in heaven for months
maybe I'm showing my age
everyone at my office plays angry birds

What age is the average Angry Birds player?

I dunno, it probably spans all ages
but noone at my office is a "gamer"
and everyone is over 40
and they all play it

Lol

I'm 30 :(

Yeah, I was at the gym playing Angry Birds waiting for a friend and this guy is across from me and he says "That sounds like angry birds" He was in his 40s. I was like wtf.

4:17 AM
haha

I'm 26.

what gym do you go to?

Oh I don't go to the gym. I was just there in the lobby waiting for a friend.

ah

I am 32, and I am losing momentum with games too

4:19 AM
so you go to the gym to play video games :P

Well it was on my phone.

the only big label games that still haven't outright failed me are Valve games and the Battlefield BC series

I'm not very athletic. I have like turkey arms and legs.

lol
I don't know what that means

I don't buy EA games.

4:20 AM
but turkeys have wings
so I imagine you with feathers

Just weak.

Only game I played to the end in the last year was Assassin's Creed II I think
and DA

I played a lot of games last year
I go in phases
I go through random periods of reclusivity for a few weeks

i started studying a lot last year so I started playing
now I am settling down
maybe I will write a RPG setting

that'd be cool
I had an Amiga back in the day, it has a pretty amazing RPG game builder on it. I can't remember the name but I spent hours on that

4:25 AM
I am thinking pen/paper RPG

ah
I've never gotten into that
I wanted to as a kid, but none of my friends were into it

I still play with friends here. That and the occasional board game
carcassone, war, warhammer, settlers, etc

are those communities open to newcomers?
I'm sure it might be different here in the US, but I've always wondered
Does anyone ever show up and say, "Hey, I'm interested in this, but I'm a complete noob and I've never done it before. Can I join?"

rpg shops and conventions always run games for newcomers
rpggamefind.com for example

Nel
4:43 AM
Morning.

mornin @Nel
I'm craving deep dish pizza :-(

Nel
Hehe

it doesn't help that living in Chicago there are several great options just a phone call away

Nel
5:00 AM
Why so?

Chicago is famous for its pizza
@Nel are you in the USA?
Chicago-style pizza is a deep-dish pizza style developed in Chicago. Chicago-style pizza has a buttery crust up to three inches tall at the edge, slightly higher than the large amounts of cheese and chunky tomato sauce, acting as a large bowl. The term also refers to "stuffed" pizza, another Chicago style. While in Chicago most pizzerias serve thin-crust pizza, generally in a style characteristic to the city, the term Chicago-style pizza is used to describe this deep-dish style of pizza. Styles of pizza Deep-dish pizza The Chicago-style "deep-dish" pizza was invented at Pizzeria U...

Nel
@hobodave Nope im not from teh USA :P
Mmmm

2 hours later…
7:00 AM
G'day

Nel
Hello chaps
Printer issues are the best

far from my forte sorry

Not by thing either - Hey @Warner how's tricks ?

2 hours later…
9:23 AM
Achievement Unlocked: Steps Reputation "▾Tom O'Connor 5,678"

I would call that a realistic assessment of the capabilities - not snotty at all

9:40 AM
It's a bit of a 'hot button' for me, I'm a VoD system designer, there aren't many around the world that do that at >100k user consumer grade level, I can probably name half of them, so I get a bit uppity when I see what amounts to a boy doing a man's job :)

i liked your answer to that question

thanks :)

If I'd asked that question, I'd accept that answer and be thankful. Didn't seem snotty to me at all.
Barely out of the noise floor on the TomTom scale. :)

didn't think it was too snotty at all, just a bit of a pummelling with the cold hard weight of the facts
Even TomTom's reply barely registered on the TomTom scale
Dell are here setting up the new iscsi (pauses for chopper to vomit) SAN
so i am happy, stuff i need done is getting done

10:20 AM
@Chopper3 I'd just tell him to buy a DL980 with 2TB of ram, and stream teh video from a feckin big ramdisk

I am happy too - the annual battle with the lawnmower is won - it surrendered in less than 5 minutes !

10:34 AM
hooray

Joining the happy club: I just managed to use a registry hack, service restart and group tweak to enable RDP on a desktop for a remote user without breaking their existing, locked desktop session.
/dance

@TomOConnor FusionIO drive ;)
'king hell, that video streamer dude wanted to speak to me about building his tin-pot porn-site - I should have let him know my day-rate ;)

10:50 AM
I would work for free on a porn site
just saying
anyway
there was a girl here last night
it was very strange

I doubt it really was a port site, although...

i got the impression it was someone who looked at youtube and thought "how hard could it be"

Why do people never explain their actual problem. Happens too much sigh

yep

This guy for example. He doesn't say it explicitly, but that's got all the smells of them running out of disk space. If he comes back and says they're running out, I have news for them :-)

11:23 AM
Just looked at that question myself. SIS is not the answer they appear to think it is

No, SIS doesn't actually do that much in my experience

Unless the question is "name a cool technology that can be useful in certain circumstances but which tends to return far less resource savings than laypeople expect"

Plus, you have the perf and IO overhead. That's why MS took it out in Exchange 2010

Yeah

I think they do some sort of compression of message headers/bodies now, but not attachments

11:25 AM
I mean don't get me wrong, i would totally use SIS where appropriate but any savings it returns are a bonus, not a basis for a storage strategy

Absolutely. MS have always said to ignore SIS savings when sizing Mailbox servers anyway, because you can't totally rely on it to be right all the time. There's so many things you can do that totally blow away the SIS on some things

@RobertMoir: +1 for that. SIS also makes it harder to recover space.

indeedy

Ick, I just got re-CAPTCHA'd on another site
Where's the sigma key again :P

It's the sum of all the other keys.

Character map?

Morning gents

hey

howdy

12:04 PM
@BenPilbrow it's U+03A3 - I put 03A3 into word then typed alt-x which converts the unicode immediately before the cursor into it's equivalent character

12:19 PM
G'day Nigels and Gents

I use string to tie the tapes and equipment to things in the server room. Seems to be pretty safe from wind that way. serverfault.com/questions/261690/…

I was really thinking about responding to that.
The answer is simple. Flip over to your BR site
Granted, the chances of one of those existing, and the work needed to build one out make the also also fairly snarky.

"What do you do about a tornado hitting your data center?" Run like hell would be the first choice.

12:39 PM
Hello admins. Has anyone used Etch?

The ones with two little knobbies?
2
I don't like them. You drop it and your picture goes away.

@KaustubhP If you mean Debian Etch, yes, but Etch is now out of support and should be ungraded to, at least, Lenny.

Oh yeah... and the person on the inside who draws stuff for you.

There's a person in there?

You didn't know?!

12:40 PM
Shaking it must really piss him off.

@jscott hey. No I meant Etch, the config tool.

Ha ha! My knobbies comment sounds like an early-day boob comment.

12:41 PM
It's hipster's ipad :)

@KaustubhP That's an unfortunate name for a project. :)

@jscott (:

And, no, I have not used that Etch.

Indeed. I thought you meant the debian distro :)

Hmm...etch-a-sketches were the 80's ipad. Wonder if I could convince them to deploy those to kids in the classroom at a massive savings...

12:42 PM
@SmallClanger I use Squeeze myself :)
I need some sort of server config management, and puppet is heavy-duty for my needs.

@BartSilverstrim Increased security too!

Can't help you there. I do most of my stuff by hand.

Using socks?
for...security.

At least then you know that nobody else will touch your management suite.

Ferrets will steal just about anything.

12:50 PM
Nothing like a cotton/polyester blend security layer.

@jscott @SmallClanger thanks a lot. see you around!

@BartSilverstrim As will one of my cats.

Thoroughly absorbent...

@KaustubhP Bye.

Ever see diabetic socks? I don't know why they're called that. They don't seem any sweeter than regular socks.

12:53 PM
@Chopper3, do you get Tornadoes over there??

Sure. They call them airspouts just so they don't match vocabulary in the US though.
I don't know the big deal about it though. My hard disks spin faster than tornadoes do. They should be able to survive a tornado through a data center. They're built for those speeds.

mild ones yes, usually nowhere near me though

@ChrisS we've probably had 2 that have done any damage in the last 10 years
