@Jacob have you done that free certification exam from Dreamspark yet?
@CodyHarlow what where?
I need to...
On Dreamspark they have a thing for a free exam voucher.
I'm debating if it's worth the hassle to finally get my student iD
I can't verify, my school doesn't hand out .edu emails
Oh, just send them an email saying that your school is not listed. They'll most likely ask for a schedule or report card. Just copy it and then send it to them.
That's how I got it.
@CodyHarlow ok
00:10
It might take a while. I think it took me almost 2 weeks because they kept on losing my stuff.
But when I redid it it was very simple.
I love having access to Windows Server 2008 R2. It's fun to play with.
Hello @dioms.
oh you don't have 20 rep yet.
@CodyHarlow he can't talk :)
Yeah, I see.
@Jacob are you using 11.04 yet/
@CodyHarlow not currently using Ubuntu desktop, Its on my server..
Ah.
@Jacob so you live in Virginia Beach? I used to live in Roanoke for almost 7 years and then Bedford for 5 years.
00:26
@CodyHarlow Yep, nice thats a lot west of here though
Yeah, last time I went to Virginia Beach was 2 years ago in May.
I fell down Mount Trashmore. :(
@CodyHarlow it's not that tall?
No, it's not but when you are rolling down pretty fast it can seem tall.
But I won my race so it was all good.
And the jellyfish were all over the beach.
@CodyHarlow yep.
@coredump around?
here.
80 rep and I get to 5k
00:41
@coredump Mind starting a english blog :) I can't read Portuguese sadly
Google Translate does a good job translating it.
I am trying to choose a good URL
@coredump coredumped.com?
Hehe
So, @coredump, do you ever feel weirded out when you eat the pear in nethack?
00:50
lol
I was kinda happy first
then scared.
I am leaning towards coredump.im
What about coredu.mp?
@CodyHarlow OMG

Q: Why am I getting this error from IIS?

George EdisonI have created a very simple ASP.NET MVC3 application that runs just fine in the Visual Studio debugger. However, I have tried to add this application to my local IIS installation. I added the project by right-clicking Sites and clicking "Add Web Site" (specifying the project's folder and settin...

Any IIS people around?
@GeorgeEdison ye
@Jacob --------------^
00:54
@GeorgeEdison that looks like a error in your code, almost like it doesn't see anything
@GeorgeEdison show detailed compiler output
It looks like someone said that they fixed it by reinstalling the .NET framework.
@Jacob It can't be the code... it runs fine with the debugger in Visual Studio.
@CodyHarlow Oh that sounds like fun... :)
@Jacob There is no compiler output.
@CodyHarlow that could take a while
@CodyHarlow I'll try that.
00:57
That one does the same but it's written more clearer.
It works!
@CodyHarlow If you post that first link as an answer, I'll gladly accept it.
(...and upvote it too.)
Please no answers with just a link
I didn't.
01:00
elaborate the answer and THEN provide the link
OK, expanded.
@GeorgeEdison I can setup you a dev site on the server if you want?
UGH I'm having so many storage issues I don't know what to do any more
@Jacob Thanks, but I'm just playing around right now.
@Jacob Like what?
@GeorgeEdison long story ahead be warned
@Jacob Okay.
01:05
I'll get the popcorn.
I must be doing something wrong... the page is displaying now, but the CSS and JS files aren't loading.
A quick trip to Chrome's Inspector reveals that they're getting a 404.
Did you send the whole project to IIS?
It's been a while since I've did anything with ASP.NEt
@CodyHarlow I didn't send anything...
Any mods around?
...I guess now would be the right time to ask how you're supposed to do it.
I just added the site in ISS manually.
01:09
So, I bought a nice disk holder called a JBOD, and 3 750GB disks and a cheap RAID adapter. Well only 1 of the disks works, I think It'll fail soon. The RAID card sucks... in essence I need to redesign my storage setup. Well I just got paid about 200 bucks. I also need to turn this workstation into a server for the company(backups) I have a 1TB drive full of data I want to keep.
Hmm...I have no clue TBH. But it all works well inside VS right?
I need a new system with 4 SATA ports, 4 x 2TB drives( because you have to start with total storage for RAID
all under 200 USD ASAP
which isn't possible
@CodyHarlow Perfectly.
@Jacob No, it isn't... unless... don't some hosting companies offer 'unlimited storage' ?
If you can find one that doesn't forbid 'making backups' in their TOS, then that might be an option.
@GeorgeEdison thats really marketing garbage, but I'm talking local for my house.
That's impossible then.
01:14
@GeorgeEdison my point :)
@Jacob Could you settle for a little less storage?
How are you sending it to IIS?
@CodyHarlow I'm not.
I'm just adding the site to IIS manually.
...using IIS Manager.
@GeorgeEdison yeah, the thing is I want RAID1 so its really totalstorage/2
Some screenshots maybe?
01:16
@Jacob Right, so you could get 1TB easily (2x 1TB drives) for $200.
@CodyHarlow Of what?
I'm happy with my 320GB hard drive.
IIS manager.
@GeorgeEdison I'm going to need atleast 2TB and a new system, the current card is slow and doesnt work right
Can't use software RAID?
@Cody: -----^
01:18
@GeorgeEdison where is the directory of your files? inetpub?
@Jacob It's just the project's folder, which is somewhere in My Documents.
@GeorgeEdison bingo
@GeorgeEdison did you apply permissions to the IIS server user?
@Jacob [Facepalm...]
No, I only did it for the App_Data folder.
@GeorgeEdison No, I've done worse
I guess I need to do it for the whole project folder.
It works now.
01:21
@GeorgeEdison I'll be posting a answer then
@Jacob ...on what?
@GeorgeEdison your question?
@Jacob I didn't ask one this time :P
@GeorgeEdison can you :)
@Jacob Well, alright.
01:22
Welp, back to my pikachu.
@Jacob:

Q: Why isn't IIS serving my static CSS / JS files?

George EdisonI added an ASP.NET MVC3 site to ISS (which was working fine in the debugger). When viewing the site in a browser, everything appeared to be working fine except that all of the CSS and JS files were returning a 404. Here is the site in IIS Manager: Other details: OS: Windows Vista Home Premi...

There you go.
@GeorgeEdison done
yay, almost time for Police POV
@CodyHarlow ugh, that can't even be real...
It most likely isn't but I'd like to see how they do it.
After all, how long has it been since TruTV has done real TV?
and it'll give me one more TV show to watch at school.
/workshard
01:42
@CodyHarlow tv at school?
Yes of course. No major TV network is blocked.
In fact on Friday we watch The IT Crowd in 1st and 3rd block
@CodyHarlow huh? your teachers let you do this why?
I do my work and I do a good job on it.
That and my computer teacher doesn't really care.
He's pretty cool about stuff like that so long as work is done
And they took Pinball away from the computers.
02:17
I hate capchta... I can't read it
My ignored tags kind of explain it all: yfrog.com/h3dilap
Not a Windows lover I see?
@CodyHarlow None of us love Windows; it just pays the bills better than the alternatives.
Is that your setup?
I wish... I'm currently working from a single 19" screen and researching a dual or quad (haven't decided) 23" rig.
02:29
Yeah, I use a 13" laptop and I'm really starting to feel cramped by it.
Personally I'd like the X6 with at least 8GB of RAM for a lot of VM's
I'm thinking about downsizing my personal laptop from a 15" to a 12.7" (or some size like that).
The workstation I'm on only has 4GB, but the server has 8GB for toying with VMs and such.
@ChrisS Why the downsize?
Portability; the laptop is more for computing from in front of the TV or on the go... This workstation is my "powerhouse" so to say. That and the smaller one is a tablet.
I love portable laptops
but if I go home office, I will do some changes here
like rigging the small laptop to this 22 inch LCD
@ChrisS I am happy to live off open source for almost 10 years now
02:34
At work my laptop has a 15" screen too, and a 19" at my desk.. I really wish I had a pair of 19"+ at my desk.
@coredump Never said OSS couldn't pay the bills. ;-)
@ChrisS you said it pays best :)
@coredump Opinions are like a**holes; everyone's got one.
02:47
great.. the CTO at my company has configured auto-update on the vcenter server
it just rebooted, in the middle of my reconfiguration of the vmware vswitch setup
@pauska this sounds bad
How make @coredump mad... I like nano
03:12
@Jacob you're young.
@coredump I could be 29 and still hate VI
@Jacob or you could be 15 and loving it after taking some time to learn it :P
@coredump whats so bad about nano?
03:23
Hey any IIS people inhere?
04:02
@Jacob vi and nano edit text files, but after you get used to vi you do it 10 times faster

04:38

How's it goin?

@Nel hi
@coredump nope, I'm 15... Meaning I've got atleast another hour,,,

05:10
@Jacob Hello!
Anyone got any experience with WDS?
@Jacob automatic installation of updates on any production server is bad
hmm
Server density is pricey but nice
@pauska I knew that, but how much damage did it cause?
05:51
@Jacob I was luckily in the middle of a wizard, so I didnt get to submit it before vcenter died
@pauska thats good

5 hours later…
11:13
Hmm
Quiet morning?
easter holiday
Little early for that isn't?
@CodyHarlow I thought it was anyway?
It is but not many people get the Monday before off.
Two 4 days weekends coming up, though (afternoon all)
11:23
@CodyHarlow Really?
People get today off?
No, they don't.
Most get Friday off and that's it.
And Sunday.
@CodyHarlow It's spring break here. Teachers and students are off for the full week. We, of course, have to work, but this is really the best time for us. Nobody around to complain about changes/outages.
@jscott Same here.
minus the fact I work for a "cloud" provider
ditto... we've just had half the suspended floor up in one of our server rooms and used the corridor outside to put together a nice long cable loom to lay underneath it
Yeah, I have spring break right now too.
I wish my school IT would take advantage of the time though. Most computers are still on XP SP2.
11:34
I am part of the 5k club now. Weeeee
Do I get a card?
@coredump Yeah
@jscott We had our spring break a few weeks ago. It was rather nice.
well you have to make it yourself, but yes
Dammit, @coredump! Why couldn't you have announced it earlier so that I could have downvoted you back below 5k?
@ScottPack you can downvote me now you know :)
11:36
@ScottPack If we launch the Down vote ring... It's not too late...
@coredump I could, but I would lose a boatload of rep to do it.
@ScottPack it depends on how much you don't like me. It can be satisfying! :) I am just 33 rep over 5k!
@coredump Exactly. That's just outside my comfort zone for a prank.
@coredump Look out for the next rep-re-calc.
I recommend regularly recalcing yourself.
11:40
can I do that?
@ScottPack Each recalc (site-wide and manually triggered) I've been on the losing end.
I figured it was they put the recalc button there to train users not to click it. :)
Get recalc'd down enough, you won't want to ask for a recalc as often.
ahahaha
4965
dammit
It will give you a day by day of what rep you earned on what as well as what your rep should be and a recalc button at the bottom.
11:41
I recalc whenever there's a variance of 50. It hurts less that way when it's forced upon you :-)
Told ya! :)
That makes me have only 303 points
@BenPilbrow Same here. I try to check it about once a month or so.
I think it's a negative feedback loop psychology/sociology experiment put in place by the devs.
WTF Akamai has decided to keep 2 of their boxes trying to connect to my server... I don't use their CDN
11:43
35 off, it was better than I tought. Probably the NginX question I deleted after the guy suggested that paying Expertsexchange was better than asking here
in soviet russia akamai use YOU
@RobertMoir apparently
@Jacob you know that it resolves to akamai but it may be a hundred of their services right? Even their DNS service.
@coredump I run my own DNS
What port is it connecting on?
11:46
@Jacob that's good. But it doesn't mean anything on the context :)
Dang. No club card.
I'll bet I have a whole fistful of akamai machines connected to my box right now. Context matters.
Pool.Fios is my RDP connection; Server Density is monitoring...
You realize that you're connecting TO them, right?
Are you web browsing from your server?
Dock overload right there. :P
11:50
@ScottPack nope
Well, you have initiated a port 80 connection to something that they're hosting.
@CodyHarlow +1 on that.
@ScottPack weird.
@Jacob Windows Update uses Akamai.
@jscott Really? That would make sense then.
11:53
Or at least, it used to, for cataloging.
We're running WSUS, so
So clients talk to our WSUS for updates, rather than MS.
apple uses akamai, a lot of things uses akamai
@jscott I have 4 servers in a utility room... it's well equipped... but still a utility room :)
I use akamai
@coredump I don't have a use for a CDN... I don't load my boxes beyond 20% ever
@Jacob I meant, I'll have to verify (if they still use Akamai) it's been a long time since I pointed a client direct to MS for updates... One moment.
11:57

A: How do I unblock certain parts of Youtube for the staff?

JacobJust about the only way would to be to scan for keywords, quite honestly that won't work very well, you might as well unblock all of YouTube if it is needed. A common saying here: Don't use technology for a management problem. This is really a management issue and should be dealt with as ...

I still get rep for that... Wow
Rep attracts rep
Sure does. I still get the odd upvote for some of my highest voted answers. I guess people think "wow, this has a load of upvotes - must be good" and do the same
@BenPilbrow Hello String = TimeofDay Ben
Hey
Ha I just got spanked by my own userscript!
12:13
@BenPilbrow how?
It thought that was a "thank you" and flagged it should be removed :(
@BenPilbrow HAHA
12:37
@Jacob RE: Akamai, my test here is showing Windows Updates hitting MS and then a local major ISP (likely an Akamai Edge Platform device) to download updates.
@jscott hmm, Thanks!
Np, slow day at work.... And I wanted to be sure I wasn't just mis-remembering something. :)
@jscott You work for a K-12 district don't you?
Yes.
@jscott As seening as you're the only one there, I'd assume it'd be rather slow. No one to break stuff
12:41
Do you use Novell Netware there?
"Holidays" are by far the best time to be at work for just that reason. We haven't even turned on the office lights. The rest of the techs are quietly sitting in the dark, clicking away.... No Help Desk phones ringing off-the-hook.
@CodyHarlow LOLOLOL No
@jscott oh...
So what do you use then?
@CodyHarlow Active Directory. We're a Windows shop ~99%... Maybe two dozen OSX clients and a handful of Linux servers are the only deviation from the MS company line.
12:43
@jscott Sounds like it'll be a great week. Why are you even there then :)
@DanBig HAHA
Dang, wish my school had that. We mainly have Netware on XP SP2 but in some computer classes we have AD.
@Jacob Get to get out of the house, ride to work... We've got a few switches to move in the NOC. May also rearrange some servers so all the HP stuff is in consecutive order by age.
@jscott Are you guys using SCCM for your desktop management?
One more guy to certify for CACERT
@ScottPack We're piloting SCCM 2012b2 right now on our office machines... We're using Symantec née Altiris for the other 4000 or so.
12:48
@jscott You and everyone else who tried to do bulk management the early days.
UGH I need something todo.... My servers are at like 2% utilization... I think I'll start cracking rainbow tables...
I'm not in the know w.r.t. Windows stuff, but what I'm hearing sounds pretty dang good.
BTW if someone want to know the process: cacert.org
@Jacob (no not really but still)
@ScottPack The Altiris products were really good. I cannot even believe how b0rked they've become since the Symantec acquisition.
12:49
Greetings, mutants!
@coredump Why? they aren't trusted by anything
The pricing (edu) on the SCCM stuff simply makes it nearly impossible to consider other vendors.
@jscott Particularly in the education market with state contracts.
@Jacob one day they will and it will be cool.
@coredump I understand FOSS but your really thinking a head on that one...
12:52
@ChrisS tried to upvote the tag synonym and discovered I created it... :P
Since we're on the subject, can anyone recommend a decent set of earbuds/in-ear-headphones for < $60?
I tried upvoting the tag synonym and discovered I don't have enough rep to vote on any of them.
@Jacob there's understanding FOSS and living FOSS :) I want free software, free hardware, free certs, open standards and technologies, no patents and a reasonable copyright law :) (free as in speech)
I love how I have 18 upvotes in but since I don't have enough rep in I can't vote on that one.
@ScottPack the synonym system is ... strange
12:55
@ScottPack The tag voting and wiki editing rep system is a bit of a mess.
2
@jscott skullcandy?
not to say a clusterfuck
@coredump Apparently you need 5 rep in the tag to vote as well as suggest.... That system is just dumb (at least here on SF).
@coredump @jscott Tell me about it. They've done a great job of relegating their use directly to the mods and devs, though.
@ChrisS 5 rep or 5 votes?
@coredump Well, I'm not sure everything can be FOSS
12:57
@ScottPack I guess it's 5 votes.... Or maybe it's 50 rep... I don't know, it's screwy at the least.
@Jacob Any specific model that sounds best? They have a lot of the on their site!
@ChrisS I really don't like the fact that you have to have the rep in the tag that will be going away
@ScottPack I don't bother with any of it unless someone on MSF specifically asks for involvment... Too much hassle.
One would expect your rep in the Master Tag to be the important part, since the synonyms should be the lower use ones anyway.
@Jacob I don't say I am sure everything can be, but I am sure I wish everything can be.
12:58
Not everything should be FOSS... But a lot more than what currently is.. And we allow patents on damn near anything; I think the PTO has a hard time understanding what people are filing for, but if it comes from a larger corporation they just push it through instead of rightly rejecting it.
@jscott what's MSF?
@coredump meta.SF
@ChrisS There are some patents that are just... ridiculous?
@ChrisS ah ok
