:P
brb
false alarm
they wanted to reschedule it
@pauska A bit scary that the legal system can be used that way... I applaud the downfall of any botnets, and especially the lack of any new laws, lobbying, or further erosion of privacy; but I'm not sure what they did should be legal in the first place...
@coredump Congrats on your tag badge
@packs Thanks! I found it kind of ridiculous not having the "Linux" badge... It's the only thing I really know
@coredump I find it kind of ridiculous having the Linux badge as I wouldn't touch a Linux system with a 10 foot stick. =)
So if I ask about salaries on SF, will it be considered off topic?
14:05
@coredump no, too localized
@coredump I've found Salary.com to be an excellent resource, though you have to consider benefits in that number too.
@ChrisS how would you have had them handle it? (devil's advocate)
@Holocryptic Who what? The Microsoft thing?
@ChrisS yeah
sorry
I guess my knee-jerk reaction is that these machines were probably violating the data centers' TOS anyway; I'm not sure if MS could have convinced those 11 DCs to all disconnect/shutdown those machines at the same time, but it would have given me warm fuzzies all around that MS took a socially responsible lead, coordinated/cooperated with other businesses, and had a positive net effect.
Admittedly that would have been more difficult, especially coordinating the timing to ensure the botnet couldn't just adapt.
So, this is kind of fun to watch. I'm installing Win7 SP1 on my atom based notebook. I wonder how long it'll take
14:19
@packs Installation shouldn't take too long, it's mostly limited by the speed of the hard drive or cd drive. Using the computer after that should be a treat however.
@packs well now that they took down Microsoft's primary source of installing popular software, it'll take forever.
@ChrisS Yeah, that's what I've heard. The magic Performance tool gave me a high IO rating, so we'll see. I'm timing it.
@ChrisS So is there an actual performance in crease with sp1?
@packs nah
Not that I've seen
14:38
@packs I don't think so, I think it's all new features.. There doesn't seem to be too many bug fixes either (mostly just rollup type stuff)
@ChrisS Actually, no new client features that I'm aware of
Just remoteFX and Hyper-V Stuff on 2008R2
Herding Cats < Managing Sysadmins
there's a lot of good, dedicated people at Microsoft's security team. I can well believe they are happy to have done something that brings benefits to all
@RobertMoir Well they certainly should be proud of the "ends" of their labor... I only question the means to those ends.
"Hell is full of good wishes and desires" - Saint Bernard of Clairvaux
well this is true but sometimes you can't choose between good and bad, but rather which sucks less.
14:51
does anyone here have a 3750 or 3750-x switch?
I need a output from a command to make sure that im not going crazy..
@pauska 3750G
@ChrisS splendid. Please post "show platform tcam util" on pastebin or similar if you can :)

With the plethora of sites now, where do we ask MSSQL stuff?
Is it still SF?
@Holocryptic Unless it's T-SQL, it goes on SF.
T-SQL goes on SO, unless it's just backup, or other maintenance stuff.
@ChrisS There's the new database administrator site. I've been dragging my feet on switching over to it since I'd rather live on SF.
@ChrisS OK. I was thinking DB.stackexchange. I've got kind of a weird problem, and wasn't sure.
Didn't realize DB.SE got approved.... I really don't like the fragmentation.
15:40
Neither do I
It's almost done public beta I think
And I think it's dba.se just for reference
There's a certain level of specialization in system administration, but it feels like we're forcing people into pigeon holes.
Plus I think that database administration is very linked with server administration
Performance tuning and backups are very sysadminy
More and more I like the idea of having the SA related "sites" be subsites of SF (ie unix.SF, security.SF, dba.SF). If you're on the "parent" site you get to see questions from all of them on the front page. If you're on the "child" site you only get those, so you can specialize if you want.
2
I didn't think it needed it's own site but what can you do /
Personally, I'd rather keep all my rep in one place
@ChrisS ooooooh, I like that.
15:44
@ChrisS That's a really cool idea. I'm surprised I've never heard it be brought up/implimented
I've brought it up before... The other day specificially when Unix.SE was having their town-hall meeting (they're electing/elected moderators)
I think it's a much better idea than the current fragmentation.
Speaking of our new mods. Seems like we need another (election was originally for 3), specifically one who's in the EST or maybe Western EU.
I can understand people wanting their own little place but it forces people to choose sides
Unless you want o put effort into SF and db/unix/whatever...
Which I don't
@Dynamo chose sides, or split your efforts... yes.
It'd also create clear lines for what sites you should be able to migrate questions to/from.
15:48
Isn't this what the tagging system is already for?
@SmallClanger Yes but some people just want more separation than the tagging.
@SmallClanger Seems like that was the intention... But seem like people wanted specific communities; many of the people on unix.se for instance didn't land there first, they found SF or SU, didn't like it for whatever reason, and moved to unix.se.
I've had the same trouble when people ask for mailing lists or newsgroups or forum categories. I tend to refuse fragmentation requests; unless there's a clear, atomic separation and there's enough traffic in the general group that people are struggling to find stuff.
If you let people set their own categories, then you end up with usenet. :)
@SmallClanger Good point, wouldn't want to end up like uselessnet.
Perhaps a method of promoting the busiest tags to some kind of headline items; l from which people can set permanent filters in their preferences . Looking at the main tag list, there's probably only 8 or so that would apply. Other tags could then be made children of these.
16:01
blech, now I think I should have posted on SF.... sigh
@SmallClanger They're adamantly against meta tagging, which the parent tags would be.
Ah, it's been suggested, then. :)
@Holocryptic You can always remove the "old" accounts and add "new" ones. If there's a lot, that would be a PITA though.
@SmallClanger Not exactly what you're proposing, but some good insight: blog.stackoverflow.com/2010/08/the-death-of-meta-tags
@ChrisS there's 4 accounts, but if that stuff didn't change when I changed the computer name, what else could be affected? That's what I'm worried about.
Plus I'm hoping for a click this, type this in, and fix all the problems in one go :)
Sorry, not all that familiar with that particular situation
16:13
@ChrisS do you think I would get a better response on SF? I'm considering deleting it from dba.se and recreating on SF...
16:24
k, just did that.

Q: Network Management Growing messy and ugly need plan

NecronetHi i currently have a network management that is really manually and there is no user management at all, i've heard that Microsoft Active Directory allows you to have a better network administration by letting me install and configure equipment remotely by user or groups that would be nice. Also...

One of those "My god, it's full of stars" questions.
I'd like to take a stab at it, but I don't feel like he'd understand anything I say to him
Sam
Sam
@SmallClanger I just saw that, where do you start?
pet peeve = AD is not a "network managmenet" application
I sorta want to call him on that, but think it would probably just add to the generalized confusion.
I told him to hire a consultant.... meh
Well, I guess (hope) English isn't his first language, which makes it harder.
16:40
christ - that's like word/idea coleslaw
@Holocryptic: Same here. I sympathise with the guy, but all you can say is: Things are going to be much more complicated. You need some help.
@SmallClanger truth.
Also a last, hopeful, grasp at an OS solution.
@Holocryptic Just looked at your question on SF. I found a link that may help you out but I do't have a lot of time to test it out/make a competent answer out of it atm.
Check it out and see if it helps
17:05
someone didn't read the question; serverfault.com/questions/249033/…
Well, I'm happy to report that it only took 1 hour 40 minutes to install SP1, then another 15 to do the reboot.
@Chopper3 I'm sure he read that VLC can stream media... Not knowing really how it works.. I wouldn't call it a media server at all really...
17:23
@Dynamo Thanks. That's what I've been getting in the responses to my question. Thanks for looking!
17:36
I find it funny that RSA got owned
@hobodave RSA? That Rustock thing?
no
their SecurID tokens got compromised
Actually: rsa.com/node.aspx?id=3872 - It it just me that's concerned when someone in his position uses a phrase like 'Cyber Attack'?
"Our first priority is to ensure the security of our customers and their trust." I think they missed the boat on that one...
17:51
@SmallClanger You're not C-Level enough to appreciate the marketing dynamics of the "Cyber AttacK'
Just got an email from PayPal: "We choose you: Up to 80% off home..." I think someone's been watching too much Pokemon.
@ChrisS the fact that you used the term "maketing dynamics" has me questioning your sanity.
@Holocryptic Meh, just proves that I've been prepping myself for a cushy overpaid C-Level job. ;-)
@ChrisS: Sorry, I'm just not feeling the synergies.
@SmallClanger Oh, I'm sorry, didn't realize you were still using Web 1.0 terminology.
17:57
My last 'homepage' still had 2 pixel blue borders around the images. I think I'm getting old...
I was disappointed when I woke up this morning and we had not carpet bombed Libya
I thought they'd have played down the doom-ladem terminology when discussing their own issues, though; and perhaps use something like "Mild Electronic Scuffle"
I think they have played it down
"information could potentially be used to reduce the effectiveness of a current two-factor authentication implementation as part of a broader attack"
that translates to "this information will most definitely be used in the near future"
@hobodave I like how the UN wants us to go in there with military forces, after bitching at us for doing the same in other countries.
eh it's a different situation
18:04
meh
this is the imminent slaughter of thousands of civilians and rebels
it's also right on France's doorstep
totalitarian regime...killing civilians.... Sounds about the same to me
In a broad sense that is
neither Iraq nor Afghanistan really had the same situation
yes they had oppressive regimes
but that's not the same as their leader vowing to kill opposition supporters
and bombing/shelling them with the military
Well, there was that whole thing with Saddam gassing his own people....
among other things
and?
18:09
And the most he got until we went over there was strongly worded letters of disapproval
@Holocryptic some of the other things including people with differing opinion disappearing on a regular basis...
Personally... More importantly than the fact that he would probably do bad things in the future, left unchecked; the US put him in power in the first place, making it our mess, and our responsibility to clean up. I know that opinion doesn't sit well with most Americans, but if my dog shits on someone's law, I'm the type to clean it up.
put who in power? Gadaffi?
@hobodave Saddam, sorry, wander off your topic.

Q: open port 1883 in webserver

how to open port 1883 in web server?? please give me solution. thanks

Huff. This is getting boring now...
I'm so glad to see that Stack Overflow are migrating better quality questions now after we complained. </sarcasm>
@RobertMoir that should be sent back attached to a "Dear Stackoverflow ..."
Boys
and gals
It's FRIDAY
and my country generated something worse than RB
eh just close them
18:17
There was another abomination migrated the day after the rant... they clearly aren't listening
questions like that don't deserve answers
@RobertMoir and that was a 5-man punt too....
RB makes me think fondly of the days when we were just rickrolled
The next shitty question Stack Overflow send us, we ought to vote to move back to Stack Overflow instead of closing it :-)
@RobertMoir Yes! Got in on the Close action. Cut it pretty close though.
18:17
@hobodave SO shols kill them themselves rather than making us do their dirty work
Some of them are idiots overe there, what can I say
@BenPilbrow that would be awesome.
it takes two seconds
you should care less :)
it's the Internet
@hobodave if you have a diamond yes
you vote and move on
do you sit there refrshing the page fanatically waiting for it to be closed?
I hope not
18:19
we think that So should think before voting on shit questions and sending them to us
oh i'm not all upset about it or anything, just a little fed up at their attitude. Apart from anything else - presumably the questions are asked by real people with real problems they need real answers to, and this moving a question just to have it closed jamboree isn't helping them
@Justin Niessner @pst @Mike Atlas @Jay Riggs @Surreal Dreams, WTF with migrating this pile of fecal matter to SF? serverfault.com/questions/249103/open-port-1883-in-webserver
7
"SO" is thousands of people
good luck with that :P
Hopefully that still shows up in their Inbox even if they've never been to this room... not sure how that all works.
based on the quality of that question I would consider that not a real person, and the questioner doesn't deserve an answer
if they havent been here they won't get it
been here "recently" at that.. not sure what recent is though
18:23
I'm off to the Mockbeggar Hall for a $pie and $pint - laters
Only 944 more points until I can vote to close.... sigh
@Holocryptic I've earned 930 so far this month and we're less than 3 weeks into it. Just target some low hanging fruit and you'll get some quick rep.
Is it bad when my mind immediately filled "1 cup" in this title?

Q: 2 Network Cards, External & Internal. DHCP and DNS Setup

deanpcmadI have setup a server at work and I want to use 2 network cards to have a local and external (internet) interface. I have set it up as follows: This server will be used for Windows Deployment Services and I would like to spoof internet domains and redirect them to this server. This would be ...

18:43
@packs This has got "bad idea" written all over it.... sigh :-/
@ChrisS It could be an awesome learning experience
You know, for learning how to make a network design implode into a black hole.
2
yeah... in what not to do.
Hello guys
@Jacob yoo
18:52
@Jacob Morning Sunshine
Looks like two factor auth coming to Linux boxes soon :-)
Do they already have a Windows port?
:693831.... I bet I woke up before you did....
@ChrisS methinks my low hanging fruit is lower than your low hanging fruit :)
omg
ZFS is coming to OS X
18:53
@hobodave for the 10th time?
@Jacob The time that I wake up is very different from the time I get out of bed :D
not sure what that means
@hobodave It's been rumored to be includes in OS X Server since 10.5
@Jacob That is almost definitely true. I don't bother getting up until around 6:50.
rumors are nothing
@packs 5:30 :(
18:54
@hobodave It was included in dev builds of 10.6, but later pulled
@Jacob Sucks to be you :)
@MarkM I have a feeling Apple wants to pull out of the Enterprise market....
@hobodave You can't buy a rackmountable Apple server anyway, so what's it matter :p
@MarkM I'm pretty sure it was promised in the 10.5 betas as well, but I didn't realize it actually made it into any of the 10.6 builds.
18:55
highlight me less :P
@MarkM Don't they make a bracket for the mini?
@packs What good is ZFS going to do me on a single HDD mini?
One can also rack mount a MacPro. All you need are some L-brackets and a metal bit.
@MarkM The Mac Mini Server (yes, I know how stupid that sounds) comes with two hard drives, but no optical (and how stupid that sounds too).
time for that double expresso
@packs Yeah, but even still. Why would I want ZFS on a 2-drive non hot-swappable system
Mirror those bitches and call it a day
18:57
@coredump So you're Colombian? You lied...
@Jacob He didn't say "time for an 8-ball and a shotgun"
@Jacob :%s/your/you're/
@packs Look, your not my English/German teacher....
@Jacob If you used the wrong your/you're on a cover letter, I wouldn't have you in for an interview :)
18:59
@Jacob: %s/your/you're/
@Jacob: %s/your/you're/
