Hello,if anyone is in here...
@Jacob hi
@Iszi I thought you were a zombie?
@Jacob Oh... uhhh... right... eerrr....
Brains
@Iszi RMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM -------------------RRRRRRRRFFFF ?
rm -rf
19:19
@Jacob rm -rf is so yesterday
Now there's this
@Iszi so whats today?
19:30
I'm half tempted to write something up using that as an example of when you should let common sense guide your judgments.
19:45
@packs Do it
19:56
A lot of my students had problems with that. They would just assume the final results were true because, well, the maths said so. Training them to go back and think about the implications of their answer was harder than I would have thought.
20:08
@packs You teach too?
@Iszi I spent about 5.5 years TAing and tutoring for the math dept during my undergrad years.
@packs Ah, cool.
Well, a minimum wage job that kept me inside and working normal hours? It wasn't bad :)
20:40
Anyone still in here?
Good ${time_of_day}
@Iain Good ${TIME_OF_DAY}
how's your weekend shaping up ?
Anyone know how to get IIS SMTP to log its contact with a smarthost, I can't figure out why mail isn't goinh
@jacob there is a whole website out there dedicated to just that type of question
20:44
@packs I can upset our maths department by asking their students if 0.9... = 1.0
And what would that site be, @Iain?
great way to never be asked to cover any of their classes
@Iain Is there, I haven't heard of it?
@RobertMoir Yeahh....we would have chats like that in the tutoring lab when times were slow.
@packs hmm
20:45
hehe
@Jacob our IIS server at works logs stuff to the event viewer. There's also a log file somewhere (try something like C:/inetpub/logs/mail). Failing that, yeah - follow normal procedure and post on the main site :-)
I actually got a lot out of TAing those classes, though. They were remedial maths, equivalent to high school algebra 1 and 2.
does anyone here use any SE apps/add ons ?
If a kid scored below average on their math entrance exam they got placed in those. Most of them were there simply because math education is rather poor in this country.
@BenPilbrow No dice, I think I got my smarthost PW wrong
20:51
PW = password?
@BenPilbrow Yeah
Are there any SMTP logs in C:/inetpub?
@BenPilbrow Yeah, I checked the logs, it only has the mail I sent it, nothing about it forwarding to verizons SMTP server
It is allowed out on the firewall... right? I got most annoyed once at our web dev after he spent a morning trying to diagnose a SMTP problem, I then spend a further hour or so trying to diagnose with him before I finally tried it in telnet. I thought when he came to me it was because it had stopped sending email - not that it was never allowed to and he couldn't figure out why. I could have smashed something heavy over his head that day
Are you doing anonymous relay, or are you authenticating with Verizon?
Have you tried it in telnet?
@BenPilbrow auth, I found out that the pass was wrong, my parents changed the pass to the business again. lets see if it works now
20:58
D'oh
@BenPilbrow Well, there are no logs for contacting VZ
Meh, maybe he has some weirdo logging turned on
I don't really get involved with IIS - setting up OWA is about my limit lol
@BenPilbrow I do this alot, when I used exchange I had to fiddle for awhile for it to work
I love Microsoft and all, but the only web server I am responsible for runs on a proper web server called Apache :-)
@BenPilbrow Well, I know IIS is getting my mail, I just can't find a log of what it does with it and the connection to the smarthost
21:11
Oh right, then I'm afraid I don't know
Get-MessageTrackingLog FTW :-)
This is all thats in the logs #Software: Microsoft Internet Information Services 6.0

nothing about talking to the smart host
Question Time!
That 503 jumps straight out at me
Lemme look what that means
Hold the phone
20:48:59 206.46.232.12 - - 0
20:48:59 206.46.232.12 EHLO - 0
20:48:59 206.46.232.12 - - 0

20:48:59 206.46.232.12 - - 0
20:48:59 206.46.232.12 - - 0
503 Bad sequence of commands WTF is that supposed to mean :/
Does it go out with telnet?
@BenPilbrow nope
21:15
Does telnet give you a more sensible error? (usually does)
@BenPilbrow No, it just gives me queued for sending
That means it went
Is it in your junk mail?
@BenPilbrow Yes, IIS gets it but it seems to drop off the grid after that
Oh OK, I think I get you now, kinda, sort of, maybe-ish
Then yeah, I really am out of my depth - question ahoy
@BenPilbrow Hmm It does work, IIS was just keep trying to use the same pass for awhile
21:26
Oh ha
Please refer to my earlier comment about a proper web server :-)
@BenPilbrow I use Linux and Windows :P
@BenPilbrow Now to get PHP to use it :)
IIS or mail()?
@BenPilbrow the mail module to send it to IIS
That's the easy bit
Is IIS doing the auth with Verizon or your app?
@BenPilbrow but it seems not to want to do it. IIS is :)
21:41
Then it should be super easy
and it works again woooooooo
