Time for a confessional, self-inflicted facepalm: I've spent half of today and some of yesterday looking for possible incompatibilities between XP Host/VirtualBox 3/Debian Squeeze Guest that could cause the sporadic dropouts I've been seeing on the connections to the guest...

One of those things where there's lots of nebulous talk and information along similar veins that fed the belief that I was thinking in the right direction.

Turns out I'd statically assigned the guest with the IP of a little-used wireless access point that wasn't in my list of assigned IPs.

Or rather it was on the list, but was listed with the wrong IP.

I had to put my head on my desk and chew my wrist rest for a bit once I realised.

SAN sw2 is plugged into Ethernet SW1 on blade 4 ports 39 and 40

38 is down for San sw 1 and 40 is down for san sw2

i will do that...i just asked one operation guy to help me trace this what he said "SAN sw1 is plugged into 37 and 38 on Ethernet sw1 port 38 should now be active I changed the port on the SAN sw from console to mgmt lan. SAN sw2 has no changes it looks like the first management blade is working, but the second management has no indicator lights, I don’t think it is seated properly. The link lights go on and off when a cable is plugged in and unplugged."

After you try and ping something check the arp table. See if your system saw the arp response. Past that, consider setting up SPAN or something on the Ethernet switch port this device is connected to and perform a capture.

@wildchild, I am suggesting you connect to the box by serial and ping absolutely anything other thing other then itself...

I've been ripping out ancient phone wiring for the last couple hours... stuff that should have been removed when we upgraded from one system to the next... I just cleaned out most of 3 systems' worth; and only most because I know some of it is still live, but of course it's undocumented and unlabeled.

I can't stand that crap laying around... You never know what's important and what isn't; you just know 90% of it definitely does nothing at all.

@ChrisS My favorite thing is pulling out a few hundred feet of cable from underneath the raised. Never terminated, and labeled on both ends with systems that were retired 5 years ago.

Given that we are System Administrators that manage ...systems, what is your definition of one? I am happy with the definitions provided in "What is a Systems Approach?" but I'm wondering what other people think. (Not sure if the question is in the SF spirit though)

@Iain Appearntly PFsense didn't like DNS traffic.. that was until I reloaded the rules.

@Iain As I recall you get +10 for every correct flag until 500, then something like +((sqrt(e^-1))/pi) for every correct flag thereafter. Or maybe they use a quaternion for the calculation factor.

I did notice a sharp drop when they discovered there was a bug in the algorithm though - I was close to 750 :P
