Nope, nothing.
And yeah, time is synced.
Event log shows: Security policy in the Group policy objects has been applied successfully.
@djk in rsop drill down to User congfig -> Windows settings -> scripts -> logon
Are your user logon scripts listed there?
Should have a Last Executed date also
djk
djk
No
This is on XP by the way.
Are the logon scripts user or computer?
djk
djk
There is no "Scripts" section under "Windows Settings".
User
User/Windows Settings/Scripts (Logon/Logoff) is where it's defined in the GPO.
It should be listed in rsop under that heading XP/Vista/7...
Can you verify the version of the GPO on the DC?
djk
djk
16:08
Just tried rsop on a Windows 7 machine and there's no "scripts" section either.
It will only appear if there are scripts defined within the GPO(s) applied
djk
djk
It's definitely being applied as the computer config stuff is showing up in rsop
but it seems the user config is getting ignored
I understand that part.
djk
djk
but it's definitely turned on
So the entire user config tree in rsop is empty?
Are you using security filtering or have you disabled the User Config settings in the GPO Status?
djk
djk
16:10
Yes, user config tree is empty. User configuration is definitely enabled under the GPO status.
hence my confusion :(
Or have you linked this GPO to an OU that contains computer but not users?
djk
djk
Yeah, linked to an OU that only containts computers.
Ok
That;s the problem
The User config settings will only affect USERs
You would need to link it to the OU containing the users your want to apply the settings
djk
djk
It's always been this way and has worked previously... odd.
?
Did user objects ever reside within this OU in the past?
djk
djk
16:13
I guess I have some learning to do then. I come from a unix background, not Windows.
Nope.
These OUs contain only computers.
I thought that's how it was meant to be done, that the user configuration would take place when someone logs in to one of these machines that's in the OU.
No.
djk
djk
I see.
Odd that it worked before, though!
By default. Computer settings tree only affects Computer objects. User settings only affect Users
Create new GPO with your User logon script, link it to the OU containing the user you're testing with. Should list in rsop.
djk
djk
User OU's don't show up in my GPMC – only ones containing computers do. Is that right? Sorry if I'm being really stupid here.
Your whole domain should show within gpmc. You won't see user/computer objects in there though, just OUs
check dsa for user/computer objects.
djk
djk
16:19
Strange, since day 1 it's only ever shown OUs containing computers.
Are you the domain admin? Is your domain part of a trust?
djk
djk
I am, yeah. And no.
Can you use dsa to navigate to an OU containing users? I've not seen this with gpmc before.
Interesting... A similar issue reported on TechNet: social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winserverGP/thread/…
djk
djk
I think I see the problem. All the users are just in a container called "Users", not in an OU. When I setup this DC I had even less of a clue (!) about AD (first time setting it up).
Ok
That's a CN
djk
djk
16:27
I just created an OU called Users
You can't link GPOs there
djk
djk
and it appears in GPMC as expected
the built-in
Right
djk
djk
yes
Just linked GPO to that new OU with my test user in it.
Will give it a shot.
Alright, let us know how it goes.
djk
djk
16:31
Yeah, that's looking better.
Cool, welcome to the wonderful world of Group Policy.
djk
djk
Strange that this used to work at all then – I have ran RSoP plenty of times before and the logon script was definitely getting executed.
So, I'm going to have to move all my users into an OU then.
Was the logon script ever part of a local (not domain) policy?
djk
djk
No, never.
Huh
Weird because you say all users are in the default Container, which cannot link GP.
djk
djk
16:33
Indeed
I think they were in a container because I did a nightmarish migration from samba
and not knowing any better I just left them in there.
as it worked.
Unless you had something with loop-back processing configured, I don't know how you would have applied a user logon script to an OU containing computer.
djk
djk
Nor do I, but up until I added a 2008 DC to the domain it worked.
If you continue to see issues, you should consider posting a question on SF proper.
djk
djk
I'm going to have to move these users into a temporary OU, delete the Users CN, create a Users OU then move them into that.
Going to make a list of everything that uses CN=Users as a path...
Thanks for your help!
You shouldn't delete the CN, in fact, I don't think you can within dsa.
djk
djk
16:37
Oh? Ok.
dsquery user "CN=Users,DC=domain,DC=tld"
should list all your objects in the Users CN. You need to change "domain" and "tld" to match yours.
djk
djk
Got it.
Thanks.
No problem, have fun.
djk
djk
Moving the users into an OU shouldn't break anything, unless it's setup to search in CN=Users right?
as in, authentication will still be ok as they still exist as a User
right?
Just any app that is setup to search in that CN will have issues..
Correct, and considering you can't link GP there, they shouldn't even see anything change (settings-wise).
djk
djk
16:41
Great.
Thanks again!
For LDAP searches you can use the domain suffix as search base
djk
djk
Yeah, then it won't matter where they are
bingo
That was pretty epic. Good job @jscott :)
Meh, I'm waiting on this reimage/install to finish over here, so.....
I had some spare chat time.
djk
djk
16:43
Much appreciated.
Not a problem, really. GP is awesome, in both the literal and popular-use sense.
djk
djk
If used correctly! :)
Still confused as to how that logon script EVER ran, but it definitely did!
Did you have it looked at the root?
That was the other guess. He said it was linked on an OU with only computers...
djk
djk
Not sure what you mean Zoredache...
16:48
...But I suppose a domain-root linked GPO could be interpreted as "only computers"
So if you are looking in GPMC, the root is the very top of the tree
There is usually a policy already at the root named 'default domain policy'
djk
djk
Actually, I may have done. I separated everything out and blocked inheritence, so maybe that's why it worked once upon a time.
And then stoppe.d
Also, if your mappings script were persistent, they would still "work" for existing users that applied the script at least once.
djk
djk
Yep
New users would be SOL though once the script was out-of-scope for their objects.
16:56
anyone know of a good perfmon replacement?
@Zypher Cacti. Oh wait, you said good...
yea
like something i can run on the box for realtime analysis
that lets me FUCKING RESIZE THE COUNTER WINDOW
@Zypher There used to be perf+ but I don't think it's around anymore :-/
You work with a set of good developers. Ask them to build you one really quick? It should all be accessible through .net.
aha: assembla.com/spaces/PerfPlus/trac_subversion_tool -- 3 years old tho, IDK how well it works anymore
Probably hackable enough too
17:03
@Zoredache haha i'm trying that too
bored
@Zypher slooooowly turn the bandwidth to the developer cage down. Entice them to write code for you with promises of the ability to once again watch YouTube videos.
djk
djk
or Spotify, I think that's the number one contributer to our massive bandwidth usage here.

Quick poll, does anyone find the technet feed useful enough for it to be here? I am about to go kill it, since I have seen more people complain about, then mention that it is useful.
it's pointless
Possibly useful articles, once in a blue moon, but I ended up ignoring it because it was spammy.
I don't watch the TechNet feed in here, no.
negative
@SmallClanger Agreed, there's semi-informative articles about once a month, but even then they're jush chock full of marking BS.
17:30
Time for a confessional, self-inflicted facepalm: I've spent half of today and some of yesterday looking for possible incompatibilities between XP Host/VirtualBox 3/Debian Squeeze Guest that could cause the sporadic dropouts I've been seeing on the connections to the guest...
One of those things where there's lots of nebulous talk and information along similar veins that fed the belief that I was thinking in the right direction.
Turns out I'd statically assigned the guest with the IP of a little-used wireless access point that wasn't in my list of assigned IPs.
Or rather it was on the list, but was listed with the wrong IP.
I had to put my head on my desk and chew my wrist rest for a bit once I realised.
So the question is, did you setup the AP and forget to document it?
I hate when I facepalm myself. But I do it so often, I've got a bunch of scar tissue built up so I don't feel it as much.
I did set it up and I did document the IP. There's a chance someone in the remote office this is all situated in changed it since then, but more likely I did and didn't document the change.
I just want to show off a bit. Got my new wheels/tires installed today.

Hmm, cant embed?
Well that isn't good. I was hoping I could give you an excuse to blame it on someone else...
17:45
@Zoredache I have ignored the technet feed for weeks :)
@DanBig no snow where you are?
I'm fairly certain we are done.
@DanBig 3...2...1...FREAK BLIZZARD!
All melted away, hopefully no more to come.
I would be in serious trouble if we got more than a couple inches.
@Zoredache: Chartiable of you, but I 'll have to take this one. Combination of numpty mistake and "Ooh, an interesting problem!" = wasted hours.
17:53
Its about 58 here now (in RI) and supposed to be 65 tomorrow. Definitely taking the bike to work.
Gah, my coworker (and I use the term loosely) chews his food in such a fucking obnoxious way. It makes me want to throat punch him.
My coworker is like that with gum. I have had to tell him several times to close his GD mouth when chomping on it
It takes mastication to a whole new level of obscenity.
@DanBig Do you live in Kentucky? Your surroundings look like what I recall of living near N. KY
@DanBig Ah, RI. So I see everyplace east of the Mississippi has an obsession with brick constructions.
18:11
@WesleyDavid: How can you tell? (Specifically, how can you differentiate that from any other mall parking lot in the country?)
Granted I'm british, so perhaps there's nuances I'm missing :)
Hello every one! i need help from you guys ...very much appreciate if you can take some time

Q: unable to login to CISCO management IP

wildchildHello All, I 'm inable to login to my fabric CISCO switch ( MDS 9506) through management IP It's giving an error- when logging it from Device manager "10.20.XX.XX" timed out Busy Network, No Route, or snmpd is unresponsive. Fabric manager has also become unmanagable SNMP engine ID dis...

I have traced the cable , now here is the thing
@Zoredache I don't even read the TechNet messages when they come through any more. I'm all for killing it
Hello!\
ಠ_ಠ
San sw1 is plugged in to Ethernet sw1 on blade 4 ports 37 and 38

SAN sw2 is plugged into Ethernet SW1 on blade 4 ports 39 and 40
38 is down for San sw 1 and 40 is down for san sw2

So we have, 1 ethernet port down for each of the San Switches.
18:22
@wildchild, connect via serial and verify everything is setup correctly.
this was done earlier..what basically you want me to check here?
Can you ping something from the switch?
@Holocryptic :(
do the ports show a ethernet link as being up
@Jacob disregard, timing and headspace issue
18:24
Just follow all the standard verify layer 1/2 steps.
ಠ_ಠ
i will do that...i just asked one operation guy to help me trace this what he said "SAN sw1 is plugged into 37 and 38 on Ethernet sw1 port 38 should now be active I changed the port on the SAN sw from console to mgmt lan. SAN sw2 has no changes it looks like the first management blade is working, but the second management has no indicator lights, I don’t think it is seated properly. The link lights go on and off when a cable is plugged in and unplugged."
sorry that looks messy just wanted to give you all the right info
@Zoredache yes i can ping
the management IP
You can ping the management IP, but you cannot connect via telnet? That doesn't sound good.
@Zoredache--just now i gave the ethernet -port status sent by the guy
your question states that you cannot ping the management IP. So you might want to update your question.
18:27
we usually access the cisco fabric IP through a management Host
i can ping it when connected serially
not through the management server, like i said
I dont want to sound like a dick, but you've never contributed a single answer to SF, have asked 50 questions, and have a 57% accept rate, all of that really sucks.
2
So you are saying you can ping it from itself, but from nowhere else?
@DanBig- iknow
i have accepted all the answers and voted them
i dnt know why it still shows 57%..
@Zoredache-yes
So, that doesn't prove much. What I wanted to you to do is from the serial console ping something else. Like a default gateway, your workstation, the management system or something else that doesn't have ICMP firewalled.
@DanBig- I am very much new to this technology still learning the ropes ...and i will definitely contribute ones i start gaining confidence...i am always thankful to ppls supporting me here
@Zoredache--by management system you mean the management host through which we access?
18:35
After you try and ping something check the arp table. See if your system saw the arp response. Past that, consider setting up SPAN or something on the Ethernet switch port this device is connected to and perform a capture.
@wildchild, I am suggesting you connect to the box by serial and ping absolutely anything other thing other then itself...
Anything that should actually respond.
i get it, ..one thing , how do i set up a SPAN , sorry if that sounded too basic
@DanBig- my acceptance rate was showing 97% and it suddenly dropped to 57% ..i have always accepted every response i got. You might want to check if there a BUG or something
@wildchild I really hate to RTFM but honestly telling you only how to do something and no background info might cause you issues later :) cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/…
@Jacob--thanks ,but, 'The Page You Have Requested Is Not Available"
Works fine from here
@wildchild works for me.
18:49
@wildchild [worksforme]
I say again, ಠ_ಠ
@wildchild works for me too
unfortunately , its not for me :(

You did click on the hyperlink... right? (and not copy and paste the above). http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/ takes me to that error page but clicking it works fine
18:52
@Zoredache-The switch ports from Gi4/37 to Gi4/40 are enabled and we can see the Gi4/38 also came up around one hour back. All the four ports are in Vlan1.

memswserver01#sh int GigabitEthernet4/38

I just received this update from the network guy..port 38 went up
My question is can i do something to bring port 40 Up?
@BenPilbrow-yes , i cliked the hyperlink
any help please , i know there are great networking guys here ..any one shed some light
Wait, how did dd'ing a 650MB CD make a 1GB .iso file??
@WesleyDavid Fat bits? (WTF?)
Maybe I should call Jenny?
@wildchild, go plug a laptop directly into port 40 with a cross over cable. Manually set the IP on the laptop and see if the link comes up.. If you have a networking guy it is extremely odd that he can't help you with this...
port 38 came up after doing the change - sorry to type it over again-
18:59
@WesleyDavid if it was a Chuck Norris CD, that would make sense. His sense of justice is so huge, dd can't make a straight copy of it.
3
fumes just had a call, it's 7pm here, from some tool freaked out why he couldn't extend a .vmdk disk on ESX, he'd only taken a snapshot of it just before trying to extend it - durrrrr, what was I saying earlier about rubbish minions :(
@WesleyDavid 8675309…blast! Damn you Tommy Tutone!
@Chopper3 Have you considered Violence?
@voretaq7 Not that Jenny, the other one.
@voretaq7 certainly I spoke of it with him
@WesleyDavid, if you where trying to copy stuff at the filesystem level I would point out that you can have hard links on the iso filesystem...
19:01
@Zoredache--removing cable from port 40 should not cause any issue , just making sure:)
unfortunately, i have a system guy available at present..
and what IP should i be setting up manually?
FFS!, a valid IP on whatever subnet, that port exists on, that isn't the IP assigned to the interface...
@wildchild oh god, why do I do this - not read all your chat posts above but what card type is in slot 4 that you've plugged into
/popcorn
@WesleyDavid Are you sure it's 650MB, I've overburnt a CD to 800MB, seen some that claim to be able to do 900MB, and specially designed CD might make it to 1GB.
/tequila
19:06
@wildchild because you have to manage these boxes by either the ethernet management port or the serial/async port both of them are on the supervisor, you can't manage it over any other port whether it's FC, FCoE, FCIP, iSCSI etc.
@ChrisS whaaaaaaaaaat? I've seen 800MB CDs but never larger. Where can I get me one of them?
I need a Makers Mark and coke.
@voretaq7 Last time I had tequila, I ended up doing body shots off this chick. Good times.
@ChrisS Yeah, it's just a XP CD that I need to make an ISO of.
@Holocryptic that wasn't a chick... ;)
4
19:10
@Chopper3--i am not sure of the card type
@WesleyDavid, ah, windows XP. What you got is all the mythical bloatware.
The hell...
` df -H /dev/cdrom
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
- 1.6G 390k 1.6G 1% /dev `
@voretaq7, touche`
shrugs
@wildchild read it from the front - oh for f**ks sake this is ridiculouse - are you fit to do this job or not?
19:11
no
@WesleyDavid, you can't run df on devices... The filesystem must be mounted.
Did you mean df -H /media/cdrom0?
@Zoredache No, I ran it on dev.
That was a direct copy from my terminal
I got that impression that is what you actually did. I was asking, didn't you really want to use the the command I suggested instead?
@wildchild right, supervisors don't have "ports 37 and 38", seriously you're so far out of your depth it's not funny, change jobs immediately, anything will do but this is A, B, C stuff, super basic, insultingly so - you're not learning from us/me, you're clearly not choosing to learn this yourself, it's gone too far, put down your keyboard and leave your job right now
3
@Chopper3 Thats... intense...
19:17
The truth hurts like a bitch
3
@BenPilbrow That is true... Luckily I don't work with Cisco(yet) so I'm safe for now....
@Jacob this is how pro's have to speak some time, he's responsible for a client's data, they're paying a lot of money for a storage guy and they've not got one, he could kill their data and not even know it
@Jacob but accurate.
@Chopper3 Yeah, I kinda figured he was pulling a give meh teh commandz plz... Not a great idea in a production systems
/peeks over desk Is it safe to come out now? Shit just got real up in here...
19:21
@Holocryptic I'm not sure.... Just be ready to hide again in .5 seconds
It's downright irresponsible, and I am shocked that a supervisor/manager hasn't noticed yet...
Man, i finally get a starred comment, and that bad boy is gone in less than an hour, damn its hot in here today.
3
@Jacob not a great idea in any system - particularly enterprise production systems though...
@DanBig there :)
@Danbig - it's easy, watch
BOOBIES!
5
19:22
@BenPilbrow I'll see your boobies and raise you a pair of tits!
4
Just drop it into conversation and it boobies is almost guaranteed to get starred
"Boob" is the perfect word. The B looks like an aerial view of them, the 2 o's look like a front view, and the b looks like a side view.
10
@DanBig your getting the hang of it...
Yes ladies and gentlemen, the inhabitants of The Comms Room have the collective maturity of a Jr. high school locker room
I met this really awesome sysadmin chick at a technical conference once. It was going great, and then she took me back to her datacenter and showed me her rack. It was SO HOT!
@voretaq7 LIES!
19:25
@voretaq7 I disagree, its closer to High school we were more mature in JR HS than in HS :)
@Holocryptic TRUTH! And the cabling was atrocious as well!
LOL!!!!!
@voretaq7 INSUFFICIENT PIXIE DUST! SERVER ADMINISTRATION DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY!
So the question of the day to ponder is: Do we ever expect females to seriously consider entering the system administration field if this is what they find when they enter the chat channels?
@Zoredache 42
19:28
@Zoredache Considering that one of the women I worked with put us all up to taking a picture of her rack in a rack (on an appropriately-mounted shelf of course), Quite Possibly.
42U?
DOUBLE U?!?!
@voretaq7, I am just wondering. It was a topic of one of the discussions at the casitconf
19:30
/shrug dream big
@voretaq7 I wonder what the security guard watching the cameras was thinking....
@Zoredache I have mixed feelings on it. Most of the women I've worked with don't seem to care (and/or are equally crude), but I can see it being a barrier
@Jacob room wasn't live yet (or there wouldn't have been any free space)
@Zoredache Then again I'm gay, and I still use that as a disparaging remark against software and hardware (and sales goons). Perhaps I'm not the ideal person to rate the corporate sensitivity training program :)
Some of the ladies in the conversation at the conference indicated that some of the sexually charged IRC conversations can get very annoying. I wasn't really looking for an answer. I don't think we have gotten to a point that we are extremely bad yet. I just wanted to bring it up for people to consider.
@Zoredache So what your saying is... NO MORE BOOBIES!?!?
@Jacob You can have all the boobies you want.
19:35
@Jacob, I don't know that I am saying anything. I am just asking for you to consider it yourself.
That's it! throws down pants in disgust I'm outta here!! @voretaq7 that's over the line, sir!
2
@Zoredache I was joking, but I do see your point
YES! I've offended @Holocryptic! Achievement Unlocked!
3
Is there a badge for that?
there SHOULD be.
it's right up there with that!
19:38
Blast it! Youtube has to wait till I get home. And their stupid commercials...
@Holocryptic well it gives you something to look forward to
I was forgetting it
Happy St Patrick's Day
@coredump Happy drunken day! I won't be drinking today, but I wish I was!
@Holocryptic just bought 4 cans of Murphy's and 1 bottle of Deus to drink later
19:54
@coredump mmmmmm. Beeer..... Thing is, I really want some when I get home. But drinking by yourself sucks. And I have to work tomorrow.
@Holocryptic excuses, excuses
@WesleyDavid WinXP w/SP3 Pro MAK/VL ISO = 617,756,672 Bytes
@voretaq7 Find "99 Minute CDs" - A quick Google didn't show up any places to buy them...
Did you hear about the old Irish-Muslim joke?.. No?.. Ahh, Jihad to be there..
@Holocryptic Which is why $DEITY invented bars (and pubs on the other side on the pond); so that thou shalt no drink alone.
I've been ripping out ancient phone wiring for the last couple hours... stuff that should have been removed when we upgraded from one system to the next... I just cleaned out most of 3 systems' worth; and only most because I know some of it is still live, but of course it's undocumented and unlabeled.
I can't stand that crap laying around... You never know what's important and what isn't; you just know 90% of it definitely does nothing at all.
2
@ChrisS true. Now I just need someone to go with. Plus I was never one for bars. Maybe I should change that. But there's other considerations running through my head, including money and such....
@beans That's pretty good. In a weird, bad way.
20:11
@ChrisS My favorite thing is pulling out a few hundred feet of cable from underneath the raised. Never terminated, and labeled on both ends with systems that were retired 5 years ago.

Q: What is a system?

adamoGiven that we are System Administrators that manage ...systems, what is your definition of one? I am happy with the definitions provided in "What is a Systems Approach?" but I'm wondering what other people think. (Not sure if the question is in the SF spirit though)

New sysadmin on my team just did the traditional screw up
@coredump Removed the disks and put them back in the wrong order?
@packs applied the wrong Zabbix monitoring template and broke everything.
@DanBig CW at the very least.
20:19
@coredump dump halon
meh
1 close vote to go
@coredump sorry.. that's a bit of a running joke around here after an electrician dropped a wrench on one of our halon cans, triggering the manual release. scared the poo out of him. a default response to "guess what <> just did"
@beans ah right, rofl
20:27
@packs keeping me busy
@Chopper3 Should only be, what, 4 or 5?
of yours yes, lots more from others though, is there a badge or prize for flag weight?
I need to go terminate a couple rj45 jacks, and i'm outta here. Almost time for some green beer!
I wonder how many people do it to get the badge and then stop?
There is, but I already picked it up. At this point I'm just trying to clean up the crap.
20:30
@Chopper3 There is but @packs keeps flagging all the good crap before I wake up
@voretaq7 You're the one that takes a late lunch
@packs avoid lines.
@voretaq7 Ah, yeah, you would have that.
I usually go home for lunch.
@packs the trip to/from my house would take my entire lunch hour. Unfortunately I don't have a galley slave to cook for me :-(
@BenPilbrow as there are only 10 of us with the badge and 5 of them are regulars here you could get a good feel for it
20:32
I remember a few of them having the badge when it was announced.
@voretaq7 Yeah, that would do it. Fortunately for me it's about a 5-7 minute drive.
sysadmin1138 and BenPilbrow wasn't it ?
I didn't get it straight off, but I was only a few flags away
Let's see, the first 4 were random, sysadmin2343445634234246, yhw42, and Ben
Sorry, what badge are you talking about?
Looks like the first 3 got them all within a couple of days of each other, then Ben about a week later.

Ah, there was a bug with the weight when they introduced it. Did they revoke the badges when they fixed the weight?
I thought that was only > 500? In which case it doesn't matter
But badges are nevar revoked!

I still wonder why flag weight is calculated to four decimal places though
@packs Thats what The man wants you to think...
@Jacob what was tghe problem with your DNS yesterday ?
20:43
@Iain Appearntly PFsense didn't like DNS traffic.. that was until I reloaded the rules.
@Iain As I recall you get +10 for every correct flag until 500, then something like +((sqrt(e^-1))/pi) for every correct flag thereafter. Or maybe they use a quaternion for the calculation factor.
I setup a cron to refresh rules every saturday
I'm getting ~ +2 for each good flag
If I understand correctly, the number it goes up by only goes down?
(Admittedly I haven't really looked in detail at how it's done > 500)
Me neither, it seemed like too much record keeping for something that doesn't really matter.
my FW is currently 539.7356

I did notice a sharp drop when they discovered there was a bug in the algorithm though - I was close to 750 :P
@Iain I'm at 586.5320. I think it was 556ish before this afternoon. So who knows.
you are obviously faster at them than me
In other news. I scribbled down the 7 character SN from a Lenovo ThinkServer, so I could look up the factory specs but the Product Number is failing me.
Is that expected behavior?
@packs Yes.
I'm accustomed to the Dell system, which is pretty bullet proof. Provided you can find the search page.

@packs HP FTW!
All Hail HP!
