Is anyone aware of a good OS neutral 'how do I secure my box' question?
Hey, any VMWare ESX experts around? Chopper3 is not here I see...
If not when I get home i am going to edit this question serverfault.com/questions/247402/locking-down-a-box-on-the-web a bit then and try to post a semi-comprehensive answer.
I just REALLY STUPIDLY set my VMware server's nic to 1000 Mbps and it's a 100 Mbps port, so now my management console is totally down
@Josh, it might be easier to just ask a brief version of your question and see if anyone knows.
ouch.
Do you have physical access?
KVM access
but I see no link speed settings to change on the console!
00:12
and you are wanting to know how to adjust the speed via the console...
yes
if it's even possible
Gimme a second, I am booting up my ESXi test box... what version of ESXi are you running?
4.1.0 Build 348481
Thank you so much @Zoredache
Sorry @Jacob, CTN...
ok
So you are on the local console, do you have local tech support enabled? Or can you go enable that?
00:16
it's enabled
after that, hit F1 to go to the console. login as root with your root password
The command that appears to do what you want is excfg-nics
just type that and it will give you help.
AH HA, I didn't know about Alt+F!, THANK YOU
excfg-nics -l to list the nics, and -a appears to set it to auto.
You're a lifesaver
00:17
That it?
Maybe, I am just clicking around in my test VM and guessing.
You'll have to try some of this to see if it really works.
@Jacob, that article seems to suggest doing about the same thing I am guessing you need to do. So I may be guessing correctly.
@Josh I'd call LW and play stupid... I want it fixed NOW!
night night!
@TomOConnor night
Night Tom. I think I'm going to go as well - I almost fell asleep whilst standing up this morning :/
00:21
@BenPilbrow thats not new for me... :(
Well it took me 100 tries to type the password right but that did it, I can't thank you enough @Zoredache
I will now go upvote every one of your answers ;-)
@Jacob I will be in touch after I finish this server migration
later everyone!
@Josh That 30 char PW came back to haunt you :P
00:37
30 is all?
I think my personal record is 36.
A number of years ago I got to see a 25 character password cause Tru64 go all kinds of wild. It was pretty funny.
00:56
If it was any cheaper, your shit would be on the street.
or better
That got book marked for this quote "The expression on her face when she’s saying the “fun fun fun fun” line is somewhere between ‘I’m saying “fun” but that word means something different on our world’ and ‘Help me I am being held hostage by Kim Jong Il and forced to do this.’”
I really like the Gateway 386DX they have for hosting
@packs Dude, I liked there net rack :)
Thats like better than what I have ]
What are t1 racks worth, I think I have one and I don't have a t1... People were throwing stuff out at a DC and my dad went I'll take that.. I also got like 5 25 and 1 50 port patch panel
and close to 6 miles of Cat5e
I digress, I am getting a quote for that colo now :)
@Jacob wait ... you mean like a fiber hotel for terminating an OC line?
or a rack to terminate multiple DS3's and demux them?
@Zypher It looks like some sort of T 1 something... it has phone connecters
they don't have "T1" racks ... it's just a cat 5 cable ;)
BNC connectors?
01:08
BRB I'll get photos
I'm getting the feeling that the kid doesn't know what a 386DX is. Hell, wasn't the Pentium already out when he was born?
@packs yep
PIIs even
/me sighs
@packs I know what a 386DX is... My father was studying to be a computer engineer in the 80s... oh and they were P3s.. He bought that PC 1month after I was born...
01:17
1999?
@packs 95? It must have been when my sister was born..
@packs PIIs launched in 97 if I'm not mistaken
@MarkM that would fit then for my sister
sigh i rmember drooling over the PIII 550's
@MarkM That's right. The P5 came out in late 94 or early 95, I can't recall
@Zypher Or when the AMD Slot-A came out? 1GHz! And watch it overheat in 10 seconds or less
01:21
hahaha, i think it was an ASUS board that you could do either a Pentium SLOT-II (?) or a socket something
i REALLY wanted to put one of each and and have two procs
supposedly that would have blown the board
That would have been real fun to watch
That thingi
Just put on goggles so you don't get any cap fluid in your eyes.
ohhh
that looks like an adtran
I'll put the rest of my photos on my blog
@Zypher ?
01:23
Adtran is a manufacturer of telco equipment
i'll look at the rest
but normally there are more to those
modem bank?
@packs no probably a DS3 demux
@Jacob let me know when they are up i can take a look at them
You know, it's funny, the majority of my social circle is in the telco realm, yet I know almost jack squat about that equipment.
that might even be the back end of a CPE fiber hotel for OCx lines
@Zypher ok? still not helpful :) what do I do with it? I mean I have FTTP now I don't expect getting a DS3 soon
:)
01:26
lol
uhh actually not much
they are cool
but ... yea unless you have direct telco links inbound not a whole lot
actually sombody is probably getting threatening letters right now about that equipment :)
since you don't buy it they rent it to you or lend it to you when you get that service
Cell phone camera sorry
But I even got a few photos of "Jernigan Networks" :)
Utility room FTW?
uhh you don't wanna link to wp-admin links
Whoops, I am done with the photo spam
any ideas with said photos?
yea with that many boards you either have the back end of multiple DS3 or an OCx line
@Zypher options? What do I do with it?
01:37
not a damn thing
try to sell it on ebay
buy
sell it on ebya, but you won't get much for it
since the telco provides that equipment as part of the service
(blah damn 3g card)
3G card?
I'm on the train right now
3g card hiccupped
@Zypher ok.... whats it called?
Running off a Verizon 3G cell card built into my laptop
hmm i forget what that piece is
@Zypher I hook my droid 2 into my Mac book pro
01:39
yea used to do that with my bb
but builtin cards are much schweeter
@Zypher I have a MBpro there was no option to get it built in
yea
there should be damnit
i think i might invest in one if they did that
i refuse to get a lapotp w/o a cell card now
So, I guess I know what that is... How does you like "Jernigan Networks"?
It even has Fiber transit... :)
hahah
nice
and my own little space of IPs
01:44
very nice
SWIP'ed to my dads company
alright i'm switchin to the kindle i'm outtie yo
Want to drop some SE stuff on there?
:)
@Zypher kindle bah
01:58
That box looks like just a cage to drop line cards in
@WesleyDavid!
CSU/DSUs
@packs! runs through field of wheat and embraces
While I do enjoy a comfort of a warm embrace just as much as the next guy I believe you're being slightly dramatic.
Although, now I'm wondering what it would feel like to run through a field of wheat.
I've done flowers, which is fine except for the ticks, and corn, which I do not recommend, but never wheat.
I once went fishing in Oregon, tramped around in the woods, got back into the car and felt a tickling on my finger. I looked down... a big fat tick crawled around the tip of my finger.
Little bastard.
Ticks piss my bitch ass off.
I just have trouble internalizing parasites and their place in this whole "circle of life" thing.
02:07
Dude OMG I got an email from Jeff cool. I have to save that forever :)
@WesleyDavid How'd you like Jernigan Networks?
hint the last 4 photos
@Zoredache Thats quite interesting
I wouldn't have believed that it was possible to upgrade from Windows 1.0 up to Windows 7.
@Zoredache I haven't seen it fully, does it keep settings all the way up?
no
well not the color prefs anyway
@Zoredache Wow, thats really cool everything stuck for over 20 years
03:52
hahah "Windows ME can't be upgraded to 2000 so it was skipped" ... good move
@Zypher You mean Windows BS?
yea ... it was a horrible abortion of an OS
@Zypher If you want the reference to the star messages
hmm oh yes , was in chat this morning :)
@Zypher oh yeah...
03:57
god ... my activity histogram is kinda depressing :)
@Zypher How'd you like my tier 1 network?
looks nice
hmm not oneboxing
oh well
@Zypher huh?
my chat profile should onebox
like the youtube vidoe zoredache posted
@Zypher want to host some SE stuff on it? see how long it takes to explode
03:59
hahaha
meh i'll bug the devs later
hmm, what kind of hardware/intenet connection do you have?
It though about one boxing... but then was like I am much too lazy....
haha, should just onebox automagically here if it's a supported site
@Zypher HPDl380G4 5GB ram 2x3.6GHZ 2x IBM x335 2x 2.4 GHZ with 4GB RAM 1 Sans digital JBOD with 4 2TB drives in a RAID1....(I learned) My FW and VPN box is a 2.4GHZ P4 with like 2GB ram My WAN connection is 35/35Mbits FTTP Verizon "Medium business transit"
04:04
hahaha i'd give it five mins at peak traffic
we hit ~50Mbps for about 3-4 hours during peak
Anyone have a clue how long ramen noodles are good for? I've got some packs in the garage that have probably been sitting for a year, and have a craving now.
uhh i think 20 or 30 years
The story with Verizon was I was with the Small business office and something on the account wouldn't work so they moved me to medium
don't they have an expeiration date one them?
@Jacob nice
@Iszi Do you want to die?!?
@Zypher oh and I have /29 of IPs'
04:05
@Zypher Yeah, but I think that's more of a "best by" date than a "you will die if you eat this past" date.
ROFL
yea ... i mean that are freeze dried
@Iszi That got a star
@Jacob Haha. Thanks.
@Zypher Whens that intern position showing up....?:) But I bet I pay ALOT less than you do :)
you mean cost?
>Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to this question
04:08
yeah what do you guys have a full rack?
awesome
we have 2 racks 1/2 full
stupid power limitations
we might have to get into a 3rd rack soon just for more power feeds
I think I may just give it a shot... I mean, after three minutes of boiling in water and subsequently passing through the human digestive system, whatever's left alive has definitely earned its piece of me.
@Zypher want to ship some stuff here?
@Iszi don't forget all the salt
@Jacob hahaha
@Iszi Want to include me in your will real fast?
04:10
Far as flavor goes, I rarely eat it with just the included ingredients.
@Zypher You could use all the power you need here... including 3 phase if you really wanted it...
yea, i bet ... we are currently drawing about 40amps
@Zypher our RV alone pulls 50 you got nothing
hahaha
If you don't mind sharing whats your colo costs?
04:12
honestly i have no idea
I bet I know of a DC where you could get all the PW you want with a gig unmetered
the colo was already up and running when i came on
haha
its a DC too :)
yea but there is something to be said about being able to walk to your equipent :)
@Zypher but then you have to carry stuff poop
@Zypher You still know you need an intern :P
04:17
gotta get my excercise some way ... all i do is sit in front of a computer all day
@Zypher I'm worse I do it al night too
haha... once again look at my profile, you can tell when i'm asleep and when i'm at lunch
@Zypher I really wish the concept of a remote admin worked like a remote programmer... As, remote admin work is impossible to find... even for free... :( I'd totally work for SE for free.. Its worth it for the little diamond not mod powers just the diamond :)
and SE must be one awesome place to work
there are remote sysadmin jobs
Quote of the (new) day
So yes, you are blown away. My friend Trevor puts it best: “It’s like everyone involved was given cat tranquilizers and then forced at gunpoint to make a video. The expression on her face when she’s saying the “fun fun fun fun” line is somewhere between ‘I’m saying “fun” but that word means something different on our world’ and ‘Help me I am being held hostage by Kim Jong Il and forced to do this.’”
@coredump We're did you come from? and orly?
04:28
@Jacob Kyle is remote
@Zypher Ok, your one of the few companies that do that? I haven't found much of anything that doesn't want a local person have?
@Zypher You should "hire" me even if its only here watch the monitor server and email me if we have a problem :)
@Jacob at my last company we had 30 or 40 remote admins
hell even though i showed up in an office (not required) all my equipment was in Ohio and Utah
their international director of IT (my friend) is 100% remote :)
the jobs are there
although you do have to get to about 5-6 years of experience before you can seriously contend for them
@Zypher I have ~2 but at 15 no one quite believes that
meh it'll server you more as you grow older :)
@Zypher haha did you purposely misspell serve as server?
04:37
Okay, well apparently these noodles are a bit older than I thought. "Best by" date was October of '09.
@Jacob - If these things turn me into a zombie or something, I'm coming after your brains first for being the one to jinx them.
@Jacob nah ...almost bed time
and i tend to type way faster than my brain can process what i just typed
@Iszi i'll have my 9mm waiting
@iszi hahaha nice
@Jacob ya need a shotgun to take down zombies
or a 308
@Zypher Beat me to it.
@Zypher I has CP on the left side tso I think about 4x faster than type thats why I quit programming
:This article is about cerebral palsy as an overall umbrella term. For the most common type of cerebral palsy worldwide, see the article on spastic diplegia; for spasticity more generally, see spasticity and spastic quadriplegia. 04:40
ah man sorry to hear that
@Zypher the 9MM is to wake up dad who has the semi-auto 308 to take care of business...
there ya go
@Zypher that should be my internjob .... Monitoring boy...
I emailed jeff about your Chat network crash... but I was really tired at that point
@Iszi Thats ok I have plenty to spare :P
nice ... alright i'm out ... sleep time for me
@Zypher lol your brain shutdown 5 minutes ago
04:46
yea bout that :) g'night
@Zypher night
@Zypher I think @Iszi died
I need to go grab the 308....
@Jacob Braaaaaiiiiiinnnnsss....
@Iszi don't BS people like that
@Iszi I'm heading to bed, I'll stop your brain fest tomorrow
@Jacob Only if I don't munch on your cerebellum in your sleep.
@Iszi where do you happen to live?
04:59
Mmmmmeeduuuulaaaaaa...
@Iszi in english or German I don't speak zombie
@Jacob A few states south of you.
Well, really... all the way south.
@Iszi Ok so it will take you atleast 8 hours to drive here... but even still thats absurd because zombies can't drive... So I'll be well rested and most likely have my degree by the time you show up...
:P
Dunno... I'm still pretty fresh. I think I could make it through airport security...
@Iszi Still you'd have to wait till 5 AM for atleast a 2HR flight...
@Iszi There is only one end possibility here... I WIN
On that bombshell Goodnight
that desveres a star too
No really it does
@Iszi DO IT!
05:17
So, yeah... 2-year old noodles aren't really great. Not that you'd expect them to be, but ehh... meh.
Not getting any sense of impending doom...
06:14
Hi people
I have asked a question of trying to find global telcos which provide MPLS and @Brian has answered perfectly, though I really need 2 telecomunication companies and he provided one (as I forgot to specify) can anyone help?
0
Q: Telco MPLS global networks provider

aurelHi Does anyone know any telecommunications company which provide Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) globally This is for a course work Assignment, I have been searching all last week and can't find anything useful Thanks in advance

hi aurel
hi :)
@RonDamon hi again :)
hi buddie
how r u
06:29
fine, how about u
fine too
i took this day out
from work?
yeah
i'm studing a master and i had to finish a report yesterday
got too streseed out, so... that was it
i work freelance too, so i can take days out
your on the roll
hey, I asked about masters before, did you take the course right after the under-grad course
how ?
not really, but pretty close
(about masters)
i'm from Chile, and college system is not quite the same
06:34
a i get you
i believe you study 3 years right?
(to get a mayor)
yes three years and under-graduate and then you can do 1 year masters
I just finished the 3 years course
i studied 4 years and got my "Informatics Engineer" degree
right after it studied 1 year more and got a "Informatics Civil Engineer"
then work a coupple of years more and begun to study my master's degree
"Information Technologies Master", wich lasts for 2 years
i'm finishig it right now (working on my thesis)
06:38
good luck with that
yeah... it's kind of a bitch really :D
:)
So would you recommend the couple years working gap
i will answyer you
but let me make an idea first
ok :)
it depends on what type of master you will be doing
and what direction you want to go
in old times, you would make a master to dedicate yourself to academic life
be a professor, generate papers, experiments, etc
in recent times you make a master to learn more from the trade, but not to do specific academic work
you follow?
06:42
yes
so... there are two main types of masters
engineering masters (just about learning some more)
science masters (to dedicate to produce academic work)
both types allow you to have a "master's degree", but it is the focus what is importante
i think Id me more suited into engineering master
I think over hear the call it taught or research based
so i recommend you get at least 2 years working experiencie
06:45
:) that is a very thoughtful answere
:D
if you want to do academic work, do not make a working gap (you will probably won't need it) and right after finishing the master's get a phd
you shouldn't need much money either, because you should get scolarships for research and study if you dedicate to academic work
you wouldn't know shit really, but trough experiments you'll get somewhere... but forget real work for at least 5 years
well... that's about it, just ask if you want to know some more details
no I think that's very good
so where you from?¿
uk
oh nice
would like to go there some day :D
06:50
o no I like it here
yeah i think it is nice
are there "intermediate degrees" on college there?
such as the "Civil engineer" i was talking about
i think that is the under-graduate course over hear
high-school, college, under-grad, post-grad, masters, phd
oh i see
what would be a post-grad course be?
the one I'm asking you about
ok
our education system sucks :D
06:54
which comes as a tough course, or research course
yeah
i have to study 7 years to do something you study on 4
nice... :_D
I have a feeling that could be better (for those that like it)
would mean more learning time (in theory)
yeah
but i think it can be improved
well, i don't know all study systems, but the 3 years under-grad system i believe is very widespread
well.... wish you best of luck
I find it hard to get my head around this system let a loan others :)
but the way I went to the open day venue (for further study), picked the course i wanted and when I asked the same question (I asked you) and out of 20 professors no one explained it so clear cut, so thanks a lot
haha thaanks for it
