So you are on the local console, do you have local tech support enabled? Or can you go enable that?

after that, hit F1 to go to the console. login as root with your root password

The command that appears to do what you want is excfg-nics

just type that and it will give you help.

and what direction you want to go

in old times, you would make a master to dedicate yourself to academic life

be a professor, generate papers, experiments, etc

in recent times you make a master to learn more from the trade, but not to do specific academic work

both types allow you to have a "master's degree", but it is the focus what is importante

if you want to do academic work, do not make a working gap (you will probably won't need it) and right after finishing the master's get a phd

you shouldn't need much money either, because you should get scolarships for research and study if you dedicate to academic work

you wouldn't know shit really, but trough experiments you'll get somewhere... but forget real work for at least 5 years

well... that's about it, just ask if you want to know some more details
