You're not a real mainframe operator until you've tasted rich chunky volts
3

@DJPon3 Tasting rich, chunky voltage? Does that mean that having the mainframe operators lick the equipment is a universal problem, and not just a peculiarity of my latest workplace?

that or faulty equipment and/or pschopathic maintenance engineers

@DJPon3 Sorry, I came across a directory of old pictures (scroll up for the legitimate use in an answer)...

Jan 12 at 2:49, by MikeyB
One of the developers from my previous job was totally blind. And very smart. Did a lot of electronics work as well as writing parts of the speech support in Linux. Modified his speech card so that it talked like the blazes.
I brought him a VCR to fix one time (it was our security VCR) and we were trying to diagnose it (yeah, company could be cheap). He pulls it apart, we isolate the power supply and remove it. He traces everything with his hands, figures it all out, sticks his tongue on it and says "OK, plug it in." I do so.

@DJPon3 Not that I've ever been so bored as to check, but I'm pretty sure that licking the iSeries is not a supported operational mode....

7:05 PM
it was the only way to get the 3080 to start up

@HopelessN00b OK, you made me do it: chat.stackexchange.com/…

@MikeyB Not to doubt your word, but he doesn't sound very smart, at least not from that anecdote.

@HopelessN00b Nono, he knew exactly what he was doing. And I would never doubt it. This guy is the stuff that legends are made of.

@MikeyB Well, assuming this is like licking a battery to see if it's got any charge left, the very smart thing to do is find someone else, not blessed with an abundance of brain power, and get them to get shocked o find out...

@MikeyB Wouldn't it have been "Ohtay - hhlug ing nngg"?
Followed by ZOT! "hnnnnnggggg!!"

Q: All messages from the mail server are marked as spam by default

SergThere are many similar questions to this one but suggestions are usually pretty generic, like go check your server against that bulk blacklist checker. So my mail server has a correct SPF record, a PTR and signs all messages with DKIM but still every message goes to spam in Gmail by default. Wh...

Whats with this guys attitude?

@Dan He's smarter than you. Obviously you do not understand genius.

@WesleyDavid "Not-Moob" is my favourite name for it so far :)

Holy dickfucks this is annoying
Fuck you firefox

Kyle's puppet question hit the bigtime in this week's SF Newsletter.
(also today I learned that puppet 3.x supports SRV records. New knowledge safely tucked away for later!)

MOTHERFUCKER
If you buy Zmanda Enterprise, you need to buy a separate license to actually use it to backup to tape.

Dan
7:25 PM
Urgh, this is going to make me sound like a right arsehole but I hate the daily phone call home

@Dan Nope, I understand.

@MikeyB Bacula master race reporting in

@JoelESalas Unfortunately the customer has a single tape drive :( Cheap bastards.

Dan
@MikeyB Our weekday lives just aren't that interesting. As a man I have no desire to report my workday anyway and I swear to god I just learned that she moved the cats bed from one room to another. That's the level we sink to just to make it last more than 30 seconds of "Nope, I'm not dead"

"What did you do at work today, honey?"
Sometimes answered by "Stuff."
Sometimes answered by 30 minutes of excited conversation or angry rambling.

7:29 PM
@voretaq7 Indeed. Good to know. I also noticed that PuppetLabs's docs are only up to 2.7.
@Dan Isn't that kind of thing what text messages are for?
A little "miss you sweetie" and go back to your coding and drinking.

We're talking about mothers, right?

Dan
@JoelESalas Well I'm talking about my fiancee

@Dan At least you don't have to stop in tonight to return the iPod that you had to upgrade because they're too "simple" to save their music... and Apple decided it was a Good Idea™ to wipe your whole device during an upgrade.

Dan
@Adrian Lacks the personal touch - I understand why she* wants to call, but I'm not a fan of the phone at the best of times and when you have nothing interesting to say it's just painful

I dunno, but I think `asshole` is contagious...

@ChrisS Haha, ouch

@Dan SMACK
@MikeyB . . . or you could just buy Bacula Enterprise

@voretaq7 @HopelessN00b Good work team. I stayed away this time :D

@HopelessN00b yeah you should delete that, it's a little too snarky. (Funny as hell and appropriate for chat, but not for the main site :-)

@voretaq7 We haven't done either before, though we've done lots of the OSS versions of both. Generally we go Amanda where the customer has one tape drive and Bacula where they have a library. Hence the decision here.

7:33 PM
Yeah, I suspect that comment will last about 15 more seconds before deletion, but at least I can say I posted it. :)

@HopelessN00b heh, go delete it and save me the trouble of navigating back to the page

@HopelessN00b link! (oh, it was that one. I missed it. Nicely done though).

@voretaq7 Someone beat me to it.
http://serverfault.com/questions/434059/all-messages-from-the-mail-server-are-marked-as-spam-by-default#comment466583_434059

Baleted already, though.

Dan
Random question: Do we have any dyslexics on here?

@Dan Ah. All in what works for you and lady. Mine knows I'm not a big phone person and that it's much easier to reach me with an email or SMS.
Of course, she knows my texts aren't facile either. I don't 'small talk', and every word means exactly what's there.

7:36 PM
@Dan Depends on what I'm trying to get out of/avoid responsibility for.

Dan
I forgot to add to that the * explanation:

*I hate calling Jane "she" and "her", but it seems odd to use her first name on here all the time :D

@Dan Not sure if I've ever used my Lady's first name here. I'm fine with that though.

Dan
Nothing, I'm just curious. I'm not dyslexic (I don't think, anyway) so I wondered if this worked for you:

http://www.pixelscript.net/gilldyslexic/

I can see the logic behind it, and have no trouble believing, just that as a non-dyslexic I actually find it harder. Just curious is all

@voretaq7 Out of curiosity, why doesn't the vengeful hammer of the mods come crashing down on questions and users like Serg? I don't see how a halp me now without details or GTFO question could ever become anything useful or constructive.

@HopelessN00b Out of curiosity why haven't 3/4/5 people here who have obviously visited that question not voted to close it? :)

7:44 PM
@HopelessN00b link?

it only has 2 close votes right now - I prefer to let the community rack up at least 3 or 4 before I throw a mod vote on it :)
otherwise it looks like the mean mods are closing all the questions

@voretaq7 If you want help with those, go upvote my answers so I can hit 3k. =)

@Adrian how the fuck are you not at 3k yet?!
2

@voretaq7 busy working. Not much time for answers.

@Dan As a non-dyslexic I think it's easier. Hard to tell… it probably has something to do with the fact that I'm a very fast reader. I do know the fonts help dyslexics though! I know a few.

Dan
7:46 PM
@voretaq7 In truth, I was hoping he'd come back with some actual info. It has potential to be a useful question

@Dan it does, but I'm 99.9% certain the answer is in the headers, which he refuses to provide

Dan
@voretaq7 Totally agree - let's face it, there's not really anywhere else to look is there?
But having read his comments, I'm forced to conclude he's just a cock

@Dan well you could hack google and look at their SMTP logs...
or you could contact the gmail people with message IDs (FROM THE HEADERS) and they'll offer you deep insight

Dan
@voretaq7 Google is all about DevOps, they won't have logs

@Dan lies - they have excellent logs (or something that lets them fabricate excellent logs)

Dan
7:49 PM
@voretaq7 The latter sounds like a utility with a million different uses

Some mod edited out the majority of the jackass, but revision 2 is really... jackassed.

Dan
We should get more of these people into chat

@voretaq7 Don't look at me. I'm close vote #2. Would be close vote #1, but I was bust wasting my wit on a baleted comment, and looking for the jackass retard close reason. :p

Dan
7:54 PM
(In a "drag them outside for a chat behind the bins" kind of way)

@HopelessN00b "But again, have no clue how to get around this." → "But again, have no clue." FTFY

Dan
Hey he posted a header!

yeah i'll edit it into his message.
(FWIW he's right - there's no obvious bad in the header)
ah you beat me to it
comment cleanup incoming...

Dan
@voretaq7 Whoops, you should probably delete my last. Replied while his was still there

Leaving the answer at "contact support for the provider you're having a problem with," and the observation that while Google "never got back" to him, the message headers he posted are from earlier this morning. <sigh>

I still say: nuke question from orbit, catch user in kill radius.

8:03 PM
It's been locked and I explained the situation to him.

yeah ok lets not beat up on the guy anymore - he (eventually) realized his bad & posted the necessary information (and he was right: the headers say he's fine, so it's something inside gmail/postini that's not liking his content or IP reputation)
@ChrisS beat me to it

@voretaq7 You were playing Suzy Homemaker (cleaning house) while I was busy throwing out the trash. =]

Dan
Can a mod send me a message on the main site , I've always wondered how that worked! :D

@Dan Yep... Coming up

@ChrisS In Boston we have servants who do that sort of thing for us...

A: How many Force10 "port channels" are needed for a VMware port group?

RexYou would setup a LAG for each vSwitch. If you assign all 4 physical NIC's to a single vSwitch, the simple answer is to setup one LAG with all 4 NIC's. This would be per-host. You can assign multiple port-groups to a single vSwitch. There are other ways to do this, so, it all depends. :) Distri...

Can someone read the comments on that answer
and make sure I'm not losing my mind
And while you're at it, read the comments on my answer to the same question?

Dan
@ChrisS Oh man you told me off :(

@Dan It's a canned message... There's a dozen to choose from, but that one wasn't too mean.

Dan
@ChrisS I didn't expect to see a whole secret mini-PM system! Clever stuff, can understand why they don't want to let people PM each other though

And I didn't have to modify it, so it doesn't get forwarded to everyone on the Community Team automatically. (I think that's how that works... I know if I modify it, they get a copy)

Dan
@ChrisS My response goes to everyone, by the looks of it

8:09 PM
@ChrisS you should have sent @Dan the one that says "If this behavior continues we are going to slaughter you like a lamb and feed you to the grues"

@Dan If you respond the message just goes to all Mods, not one in particular.'

Dan
Heh, there's a bug on there. My name has a diamond in the Reply To window

@Dan Congratulations, you're the new janitor :P

@voretaq7 I thought about suspending him, but the minimum is 24 hours.

Dan
@ChrisS Dude, I would die!

8:11 PM
@Dan Take a screen shot please, so it can get reported

@Dan yes, if you don't want to be the new janitor please file a bug report in triplicate like @ChrisS said :)

Dan
Not the most interesting one - the "From" field

@MDMarra I know with standard vSwitches you're 100% correct... I dunno with the vDS though. Where's ewwhite or chopper?

Dan
I just watched a trailer so bad that I thought it was a parody

yeah that VMWare question is outside my sphere of experience unfortunately

Dan
8:16 PM
Do you mean vsphere?

Boom!

@Dan You are a terrible person. I resisted making that pun.
(and because you're a terrible person, if I change it to say "realm" you'll make a Kerberos pun won't you?)

Dan
@voretaq7 I'd sure try!

if we are going to joke:
How to manage enterprise network of Linux machines?
A: Hire some pupper to do it for you?

Kerberos: All the efficiency and elegance you'd expect from a three-headed dog that can't even spell its own name properly.

*puppet. Darn. Worst word to typo in

8:20 PM
@Hennes Install Windows on them. You're better off.

Eh, no. I did not know

(you know you can edit by using the up arrow, right? :)

@Dan your hat and coat sir - the taxi is this way

@Iain Oh my paws and whiskers, he's late!
@Hennes Now you know, and knowing is 5/8 the battle.

I tried editing. Most ly by pressing control-U to kill a line and then getting the view webpage source :(
I might be a windows admin, but I started on slackware.
Back when windows 95 still was not stable, and NT did not run well on 64MB

8:23 PM
Dammit. WhyTF does Puppet have to have 3 different ways to do everything?

It is windows compatible :)
Granted, I feel out of my depth here. I never used puppet.

@Adrian Why wouldn't it have 3 different ways to do everything? It is designed to be a flexible tool that works for everyone.
BTW you are supposed to use the method that works best for you.

@Zoredache Having a bunch of different ways to do things makes it blasted difficult to figure out the language by working with the modules though.

Can you elaborate? The puppet DSL seems very simple to me.

@Zoredache It's probably me. I've been out of real programming too long. And Puppet seems to have an awful lot of different ways to call functions.

8:33 PM
The key point you have to always remember is that puppet is declarative not imperative. It doesn't even have 'functions' really.

@Zoredache Yeah. A decade-plus of Bash scripting makes that a rough transition.

@Adrian @Zoredache Lambda Gators.

@voretaq7 ?

Dan
@voretaq7 You should see me in real life :D

8:41 PM
@voretaq7 "People who spent more time online and who had a high percentage of close ties in their network were more likely to engage in binge eating and to have a greater body mass index, as well as to have more credit-card debt and a lower credit score, the research found. Another study found that people who browsed Facebook for five minutes and had strong network ties were more likely to choose a chocolate-chip cookie than a granola bar as a snack."
Schweet!

Dan
@ChrisS That'll be me going for a run tomorrow, then!

@ChrisS OMNOMNOM?
@Iain NARQ or dupe of capacity planning

I really hate the whole "It's anonymity that makes you an arse online" argument. There are lots of places where you're essentially anonymous and people don't act like idiots. Its the distancing effect, you're staring a computer screen, not the person. I can't find the study right now, but they did one where 1/2 the people used video conferencing to talk with each other instead of text. Everyone video chatting was notably nicer than the texting group.

Dan
@Iain One million gigavoltamps

8:43 PM
@voretaq7 pfft, the person that wrote that article is an idiot. She didn't provide any answers or post anything new. ;)

I wonder if I could connect the disk shelfes of our old EMC san right into a SAS HBA and see the disks..

@Zoredache WSJ/Social Sciences...

@pauska suck it and see

The best online bullying punishment I've ever seen: The school caught wind of whatever the bully said, and made him read it out loud as a school assembly.
Which reminds me of an XKCD cartoon!

@pauska Yes.

8:54 PM
@voretaq7 Yeah. I'm not real great at calculus. It's been a very long time.

@Zoredache I don't think there's anything new to be said because it's the exact same thing people have been doing since forever, just with a computer instead of whatever they had way back when.

@ChrisS I was trying to prove the point of the article by bashing it here, as an attempt to be humorous. You did see the ;) right?

@Zoredache Sorry, sleep deprived...

@Adrian Lambda calculus is easy. And when it involves gators it's FUN too

@voretaq7 And unless you practice it, it atrophies like anything else. Trust me.

9:01 PM
@Adrian GATORS! :-)

9:17 PM
@voretaq7 TSO4 (and/or HW vLAN TSO4) <-- FINALLY figured out what was wrong with my server. No idea why FreeBSD 9.x has this f-ed up, but it definitely is.

@ChrisS really? WTF?

A quick ifconfig lan1 -tso -vlanhwtso and the problems went away.

Worked fine in 8.x - what the hell did they do?
intel NIC?

I even tried switching from the built in nVidia NIC to a Broadcom NIC and it was the exact same, it's a software issue.

definitely file a PR - that's a big one to fix

9:20 PM
It's only a problem when using TSO on a vLAN interface attached to a card supports it. So I'm suspecting it's the VLAN_HWTSO option, but I'll fart around with it more tonight.
It was just driving me up the wall for the last week though; randomly dropping outbound packets (ipfw would say the packet went out, and tcpdump wouldn't show it, and obviously the destination never received).

@ewwhite do you know of any well written zfs guides out there that explain everything you need to know? different type of vdevs/zpools/zil/arc etc?

The ZFS Intro article I wrote kinda sucks. I should do some revision... like, a lot.

@pauska Solaris ZFS Administration Guide (dunno how recent it is)

@MikeyB Too old.

9:42 PM
@ewwhite wow, that one was nice

@pauska I repeat a lot of that stuff

So, when other people load chat, do they get someone elses random chat message populated in their textbox?

@MarkHenderson No.

@ewwhite there's one thing that stomped me though.. best practice is to not use sas expanders at all. He can't honestly be serious about this?
if you have 50 disks you're supposed to have 50 hba sas ports?

@pauska He's talking about putting SATA on SAS expanders, I'm guessing because of the protocol tunneling required to make them work

9:56 PM
oh. ok.

10:09 PM
@pauska stay away from SATA disks if you can
too many problems

Howdy folks

Hey @Jacob
Long time no see

Howdy ya'll... what's everyone using for video capture these days? (specially to capture a terminal window, in windows).

@MarkHenderson Yeah, I'm currently rather sick and have nothing todo.

10:25 PM
I love the description on this
"Changelog by Seth Vidal (2010-08-10):
- conflict fedora-release so people don't indadvertently do something silly"

@l0c0b0x what do you mean by terminal window?

@Jacob Thats no good. On the mend?
@l0c0b0x camtasia?

@MarkHenderson Well apparently I have a sinus infection AND the Flu. Last Night I was about to go to the ER I felt so bad, but my doctor says I'll be "lucky" if I can attend School on Thurs/Friday. He thinks that I might not feel better until the weekend. -_- I've been out all week.

@Jacob Damn. My wife had a flu + sinus infection a while back, she actually had to have surgery to clear her sinuses. It's a nasty nasty combination.
Hope you feel better soon

@MarkHenderson Thanks

11:07 PM
Is Websense shitty software?

@ewwhite Their URL Filtering?
I've been subjected to it at a few institutions, it seemed to work reasonably well

@MarkHenderson Yes. It's been the worst software installation experience I've ever encountered on Windows.

Ah. I've never had to administer it, I've only had to use computers that are behind it

@MarkHenderson Yeah, just installed Cam Studio, seems to work great actually. @Zoredache... sorry, meant cmd or putty.

@MarkHenderson A good example of why Websense sucks...
Shutdown the Websense services in this order:

“ApacheTomcatWebsense”
 “Apache2Websense”
 “Websense Usage Monitor”
“Websense Reporter Scheduler”
“Websense Log Server”
“Websense Information Service for Explorer”
 “Websense Explorer Report Scheduler”
 “Websense Logon Agent”
 “Websense DC Agent”
“Websense Network Agent”
“Websense Filtering Service”
 “Websense User Service”
“Websense Policy Server”
 “Websense Policy Broker”
“Websense Policy Database”

Restart in the opposite order.

11:13 PM
@ewwhite I sense a net stop or a stop-service script coming on...

@ewwhite Holy crap, that's like a Myst puzzle or something

It wouldn't be that bad if tech support would just say something like: "Oh, and here's this happy little script that does it for you"

11:58 PM
@l0c0b0x Of course one cheap way to do it is to simply start your command within a desktop VM tool like Vmware Workstation. When you can simply start the VM video capture software.
I think parallels can do that also, but I am not sure about the free version of virtual box.
