I find this a bit weird
@Chloe Suits you sir
A heterosexual couples-only bathroom? There have to be better locations for... "couples-only" activities than that.
@HopelessN00b Won't lie, that was my first thought :D
Close that question!
13:05
2 more votes required
On the other hand, you find a gal who wants to do it with you in a public restroom, she seems like she's worth hanging on to... so I'm not sure what to think.
@HopelessN00b I once nailed a receptionist in the office toilets, a cleaner walked in and I just grinned and carried on :) - Looooong time ago though
2
@ewwhite I was close vote #2.
@Chopper3 You lose marks for not involving the cleaner
she looked like a thumb with a face drawn on it
13:06
@Chopper3 Yeah, but you can't tell from behind
@Chopper3 Well, our receptionist is about 60... so I'm not sure nailing her in the restroom would be a story I'd want to tell.
she was a 32yo part time 'performance artist', I was 20yo - said it was a long time ago
Yeah, clearly I need to be selecting jobs based on different criteria... like the hawtness of the female workers.

Q: Set up VPS as to serve videos

Ascii DudeI'm running a video site and I need to get a cheap cloud server to host videos. I found an unmanaged VPS solution that seems like it will work, but I've only used managed servers before. I'm pretty familiar with Unix, Apache etc and think I can install them no problem. But I'm not sure what I'll ...

"What will I need to do to set this up?" - a bit of a clue?
awwwww closed
13:14
@HopelessN00b Chopper probably won't agree, but the twice I've done it, I've regretted banging women at work
Just seems to make things a bit awkward
And people get funny
@Chloe married my boss
@Chopper3 Ah, that was (presumably) a fairly 'proper' relationship though, no?
I wouldn't mind dating someone at work, well apart from that I'm getting married next year!
no, we were both just fucking animals, shagging everyone we knew, each other's friends etc. just ended up this way
(or were you just taking an attempt at promotion to the usual Chopper patented extreme?) :D
@Chopper3 I tell you what, there's things I'd never tell folk (even here) but I still want your life!
sigh Fucking puritanical USA... not nearly enough fucking in it.
13:17
she was CFO, I've never courted promotion, if you work hard you'll find the right level eventually, the ones who go balls out up the ladder end up falling down it eventually too
Reasons for a Chopper Blog number #32.
2
Sure you coudln't do it anonymously?
@Chopper3 Couldn't agree more
@tombull89 He needs a ghost writer
@Basil That must be a troll... Comparing U320-SCSI to iSCSI over 100MbE?
I'm a pretty prolific writer...
@MikeyB or a noob
Meh, even n00bs have more of a clue than that.
13:20
@HopelessN00b And we get some of those "values" bleeding over into Canada as well, it's driving me nuts.
his other questions have been ~ok
@Basil Classic case of someone who thinks they know more than they do, with a serious chip on their shoulder and a dislike for pro IT SysAdmins because, hey, we know fuck all (IMHO)
@Chloe BECAUSE DEVOPS
If you haven't run a production system on your laptop, YOU DON'T KNOW SHIT ABOUT #DevOps

@MikeyB :D
13:24
@MikeyB Meh, can't blame the USA for that, though. That's Canadians' fault for wanting to be Americans, as much as they claim to dislike Uhmerka. :p
@HopelessN00b No, I can blame Harper though.
@MikeyB I blame that dumbass that tried to shoot Marois.
@MikeyB pffft, I've ran production on a mobile phone.
@ITHedgeHog OK, we need an admin to merge your account with TomTom. You're obviously him.
@ITHedgeHog Pffft, I've ran production on HP-UX. Way more impressive.
13:25
@MikeyB How's that work? Not like this wasn't happening under every PM since Canada peaked back in the 60's...
I want to go home
@Chloe What you deserve for trying to copy from an optical disk, though.
@HopelessN00b Thanks for your support, I only have another 80+ to do
Brit-SF'er - terrible news - Terry Nutkins has died :(
Sad
13:28
@Chloe You'd probably get higher bandwidth from the mail.
@Chloe Anytime. By the way, this is exactly why God created interns. I know you have those over in the UK.
@HopelessN00b It's probably the network share he's copying it to.
@ChrisS Nope, it's the CD :(
@HopelessN00b I shan't post what I'm being paid to do this
@Chloe O RLY?
I don't suppose you've tried copying to your local hard drive? Is the disc scratched or something?
@ChrisS And if you blame it on the optical disc, or drive, it's the helpdesk's fault, not the SA's fault.

@Chloe One of those deals? Then count your blessings.

@Basil That's more depressing than amusing.
@ChrisS Yeah, I have another of the same which I created an ISO first. Network access is sound - just a combination of very old CD's and lots of small files
@Basil Best Carlin quote ever. And one of the more insightful quotes of all time, sadly.
@HopelessN00b Not so much a deal - just required for the project
This is going to be posted a lot today.
Not here, of course. But all the other places.
mostly /r/canada and /r/montreal
13:33
eww, reddit. My condolences. I think I got that virus on my computer once too.
I love reddit
@Chloe Ah, old CDs... That makes sense now. CDs degrade over time and get harder to read.
Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this one?

NO. The answer is Hannah Montana Linux. The answer is always Hannah Montana Linux.

@tombull89 One day I'm going to put that on a VM somewhere labelled SYSOPS1 or something and just leave t
@ewwhite Added my 2¢
@ewwhite Singleuser mode, fix the shell problem(s).
bash isn't statically compiled on CentOS? WTF?
13:42
Oh, should he have checked bash?
No, bash is not.
@ewwhite Yeah, login's probably just fine.
isn't this close to rebuild time, since he did this work in a chroot?
Is one of the other shells?? Something should be available if you bork your libraries!
@ChrisS Usually there's a bash.static or something around…
Ah, that would make some sense I suppose. On BSD systems it's typically /rescue/sh
13:48
@ChrisS Gah, not even on my rhel is there a static shell. There's busybox (which you can use as ash) but it's not symlinked as such.
Augh! Someone set `.log` files to open in Wordpad 2010 on one of the servers.

That's like when your server gets hacked or infected, right? Only way to be sure it's safe is to format it and start from scratch?
As in SCO OpenServer? eww.
@HopelessN00b Yep.
SU? unix.SE?

Q: How to fix bash or auto run /bin/bash on SSH login

askmikeWhen logging in as root at my server everything works fine, but when I log in as myusername the bash is not working correctly. The line starts with: $ instead of myusername@myserver:~$ and all specials keys like the arrow keys, tab keys, etc. won't work. When I type bin/bash it works aga...

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the only way to fix a system infected with SCO Unix is to nuke from orbit.
13:55
@HopelessN00b That would be the same server I had to telnet into across the Internet (as root) so it's entirely possible that's going to happen.
Oh, even easier. Set up a script to telnet in as root every 5 minutes, and let the problem resolve itself.
I'm sure a hacker in a 3rd world country could find a use for even an SCO-Unix machine.
@HopelessN00b I hope not. This is their only server :p
14:19
wow, great stuff
atleast he's trying
Aww, bless
Just did a telephone interview for a small bit of work, not too motivated by the job as I couldn't probably scripted the whole thing in the time it took to do the call - they reckoned it was 3 months to do but I reckon I could have it done and documented in half a day, not sure I want to work with people that far out of the loop
@Chopper3 I'll do it. I'd love to bill 500 hours for 10 hours worth of work.
That's not how I do things, I wouldn't mind but they were happy with the price (the only reason I took the call tbh)
@Chopper3 Scary stuff
14:34
Meh. There's that, but if they want to pay you for 500 hours worth of work, I'd be happy to offer the extra 490 hours as a "retainer" with an expiry date....
Usually free money, and it seems to make everyone happy.
It was a fixed-price job
Oh, then it's probably more trouble than it's worth. 3 months of migraines for a fixed price, ick.
it was one of those 'old-boy-network' kind of jobs, their new CIO is an old colleague
@pauska Thanks for your answer, dude

OK, if you see a server with an "Out of Option ROM" space error, does anyone NOT know what causes it/how to handle it?
Destruction has always been easier than creation. Snarkiness is easier than Helpfulness. Insulting is easier than Educating. We choose to do The Right Thing not because it is easy, but because it is hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone.
@MikeyB Network bandwidth, right?

@ChrisS Sure, but good luck convincing the SE developers...
@HopelessN00b Nope. (serious question BTW - I keep answering this question and wondering if that kind of level of awareness into how computers work is common or not)
@MikeyB Needs moar ROM, obviously. Then again, if you're young and got into the industry very recently, maybe the whole idea of ROM is foreign or something. How often do you even need to worry about having enough ROM on a computer made in the last decade?
14:54
@HopelessN00b I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not :)
Hard to blame you... I sometimes have trouble telling myself.
I was serious on the last bit though... that error means you're trying to load too much into limited ROM space. Is that actually a problem these days? I can't even remember the last time I saw such an error.
@HopelessN00b Well it'll happen on any server with a lot of interfaces/HBAs on it that's booting into legacy BIOS mode. I get asked about it about once every one or two months.
Oh. I guess I can see that, then... Not that it should be conceptually difficult, but anything "legacy" is always a stumbling block until you've experienced it yourself, so not too surprising to me people would see an error message from the bad ol' days and jump to WTH, halp!
@HopelessN00b I find that not many people are using EFI-boot nowadays, especially those who use deployment solutions that can't handle EFI systems properly (Ghost).
Well sure, but just because you're still using good ol' BIOS, doesn't mean you see a lot of "not enough ROM" errors. Like I said, I can't remember the last time I saw one.
15:09
@HopelessN00b Doesn't take much. This server, fer instance, only has RAID card, 2×8Gb FC HBAs and 6×1GbE NICs. ROMs are bigger nowadays, too.
@MikeyB We have precisely 0% EFI enabled systems (though almost all support it). I suspect most businesses are the same.
@ChrisS UEFI is awesome. I'm using it wherever I can
I have no doubts, and I'll look into it when I start this years laptop refresh, but right now we're not using it here. I do have a couple home systems using it, but that's somewhat different.
@JoelESalas I use it everywhere I can, which, like @ChrisS said, is on exactly 0% of our systems. :)
My servers go in the rack with whatever their default configuration is (all BIOS) - One day EFI will be the default from our vendors and that's when we'll start transitioning.
Our desktops are Macs though so those are EFI.
15:12
@voretaq7 Oh, is EFI how the MacOS virus protects itself from being uninstalled? :p
@HopelessN00b would you rather the Windows virus?
Ok legit question: I've once again been asked to "collect performance stats," without the hassle of proper monitoring and with much higher resolution
this involves CPU/memory/disk I/O
I'd argue that the results of siege ARE the "performance stats," but that's another conversation
@JoelESalas nmon
@MikeyB Tryin' it, thank you
@voretaq7 Absolutely.
15:16
@MikeyB Is there an easy way to store the results?
@JoelESalas You can run it interactively or in the background. In the background it'll log complete info every X seconds to a csv.
Ah, got it
@HopelessN00b ...freek
how did I not know that existed?

@RebeccaChernoff What now?

@voretaq7 This RebeccaChernoff thing's a bot, right? It looks like it's pretending to be a woman on the interwebs.
@HopelessN00b yup - bot. comes in every so often, smacks @WesleyDavid around, Chaos Monkeys a few machines...
never eats the peanuts though. It's OK, the psychotic squirrels will be along shortly to clean.
Ah, excellent. Just had to make sure my worldview wasn't completely out of whack again... I mean, a woman, on the internet? Whoa. Threw me for a bit of a loop at first.
@RebeccaChernoff It's very simple - If you don't eat peanuts you're a bot.
All those people with peanut allergies? Bots. Every one.
15:30
unless it is peanut butter, not really a fan of peanuts >_<
remember everyone - when Skynet comes to take over use the peanut test, not the Turing test!
@RebeccaChernoff that counts.
@RebeccaChernoff Not even in a pub?
@voretaq7 See, this is why I'm not worried about Skynet taking over. We run Windows. If it comes for us Windows users, we just have to wait until Skynet throws a BSOD, and we'll be safe again.
Or if Skynet was Windows based you could just plug an old printer into one of its USB ports and watch it flap forever
15:35
Come to think of it, if it comes for our network, it'll probably have to store its AI in an MSSQL 2000 database. Hah! Good luck ruling the world from there...
Did we ever reach a consensus on whether or not language-specific stackoverflow sites are a good idea or not
I like it. Force all the developers to post in Estonian. That should cut down on the amount of crap they migrate here.
Oh, comeon.... who the hell put 6 gigs of RAM into a 32bit Windows server? Yeah, I know why you can't get anything to use all your RAM.... grr.

A: Migrate linux dhcp to active directory

StuartInstall samba4 as the domain controller and it can then act as the Active directory server. See http://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Samba4 leave the dhcp server where it is, or run this on the same server as samba4

Dammit Joel, now I've got -1 rep on the day. I better do something marginally useful to rectify that.

@LucasKauffman No he's not. :p When the difference hits 5 minutes, it'll be a bad time.
16:06
@LucasKauffman lol... one of my worries is our certificate-based wireless clients :\
@HopelessN00b Is that right? Oh good... I was hoping 2 minutes wouldn't be so bad.
@l0c0b0x You're fine, at least if you got domain defaults. 5 minutes/300 seconds.
@LucasKauffman Try 1 second. For some reason our in-house PHP app has to have 1-second for the shift log posting service to detect double-attempts to post. I don't think my Devs had heard of fingerprints or session keys when they wrote that stuff.
Mornin' Gents.
@l0c0b0x And you probably do... that setting isn't one I've ever seen anyone muck around with, so... everything shouldn't explode before you fix the problem.
Lol. In not-so-shocking news, the Avamar 6 client won't install on Windows 2000.
16:10
@LucasKauffman I never saw this episode of the IT Crowd
@HopelessN00b you let more than one set of systems in your environment see outside clocks?
@l0c0b0x "YOU FUCKING BROKE IT!" :-)
No, PDC emulator only.
Our switches get their time from there... I guess I should make that explicit in my answer, huh?
@HopelessN00b I use my routers (R001/R002)
@HopelessN00b yeah :)
or reply to my comment
my routers both look at {0-5}.us.pool.ntp.org, and everything else looks at both of those for time -- I've had 1-2 servers in my selected list go down or insane in the past without any trouble
so this is how people on SO get to vote on migrating shit to $elsewhere stackoverflow.com/questions/12313423/difference-between-and
hehehe... I think its a healthy worry. Your suggestions are great, thanks!.
16:16
I know we need to vote more but their standards a lower than a low thing
@Iain lower than the earth's core
Yeah, thanks for that @voretaq7 Corrected now.
@voretaq7 for me that would be somewhere near New Zealand
Had a problem today on a new HP P6500 array in my lab, it looked like we'd had a controller failure after a firmware upgrade, the HP engineer was driving to site when the normally-useless Indian-based 'call manager' suggested we restart the management system, I laughed it off but one of my guys did it anyway and it worked - I feel like a dick - literally switching it off and back on again fixed it - ffs
LIES.

@Chopper3 Because we make our disabled people live in squalor and they can't afford to go.

@l0c0b0x are you using ntp1.wa-k20.net/ntp2.wa-k20.net?
Does anyone pay special attention to email messages sent as "High Priority"?
@ewwhite they get High prioritized to the back of the queue
Or do you subconsciously ignore it because you think people that flag email as "High Priority" are stupid...
16:28
@ewwhite kind of. My level of attention is usually inverse to the level of priority set by the user.
@ewwhite I've found that some people send out all emails ah high priority so it's kinda useless
@ewwhite I actually had a boss who made judicious use of high priority flags. It was nice in a way, but also terrifying to get one
Heh... well, it's one of those pet peeves..
@US people: Can anyone tell me who I have to stab to get cheap upstream bandwidth over there (pref. west coast, though I'll roll out some UTP from the east coast if I must).
I can defintely tell you who to stab. She's in Ohio, though.
16:36
@JoelESalas If people actually used them properly I would like them.
I'm the only person in my company who properly uses high/low priority flags
which means you might see a message from me with priority set 2-3 times a year
It's frustrating. I get the choice between DSL over a copper infrastructure that's worse than britan's or $20bajillion/month for anything reliable.
@SmallClanger Define cheap
@voretaq7 ~10Mbit/s for ~$500/month I'd regard as reasonable.
@SmallClanger ...you're talking commercial with a guaranteed SLA? 'cuz that's not gonna happen
It's for a small office, so there's no will to spend money on something solid.
16:40
I get 30/30 plus shitty cable from Verizon for about $100/mo
@SmallClanger you in a FiOS service area?
That I understand. :) Not looking for an SLA, I can use the crappy DSL as a backup.
Not in FiOS area. It's downtown SF.
Give me a few tons of C4 and I could probably get line of sight to a Wimax provider...
@SmallClanger cable?
Hadn't thought of cable. Do they run to businesses?
@Zoredache No... one of the techs here used (I believe) a navy NTP server, which is down now. Our secondary was ntp1.wa-k20.net (that's where I want to be).
otherwise you're talking Metro-Area Ethernet which is megabucks (but you'll get 100Mbit or GigE at the termination :)
@SmallClanger they do here
16:44

@HopelessN00b they're round-robin (or maybe anycast) these days
@ewwhite can you force an NTP sync in IOS?
16:53
Yeah, I'd read somewhere that the Nacy had decided to discontinue NTP service to the public and was decomming tick and tock. Huh. Wish I knew where I read that so I could shitlist it...
@voretaq7 I just removed settings and reapplied.
otherwise crank up ntp logging and see what it says -- it's reporting all your candidates as stratum 16 (uncync'd) and reach 0 which makes me think it can't talk to then on the NTP port (123/UDP)
