@ewwhite Not sure what you're offering, tbh.
@BartSilverstrim A place in the university city section of philly that deals with foreign medical graduates transitioning to practice in the US
@MDMarra How much does it pay!?! No salary range listed.
@ewwhite I am genuinely interested and willing to pay shipping plus whatever we agree upon if it's reasonable for my home budget. You wanna map out what you've got and I'll let you know interest? Like, proc/ram/drive trays/etc.
@ewwhite I meant they're in my last post to you
ah..
@MDMarra You're going to another uni?
15:01
@PeterGrace G5s are good for esxi vmware.com/resources/compatibility/…
If I had to guess, I'd say low to mid 70s
@Iain well then, G5's are sold!
hehe.
@BartSilverstrim Nope, it's not a university
Hmm. Would I be willing to take mid 70's to work somewhere where I could get a degree for free
@PeterGrace definitely worth it IMO.
15:02
@mdmarra I thought you worked for LaSalle?
@BartSilverstrim It's a private non-profit that certifies medical grads for the US
@PeterGrace My last day here is this friday
Not sure if I'd fit in with higher ed though.
@PeterGrace That's actually going to become an interesting question in coming years...
@vcole you don't know what I make here ;)
@PeterGrace We'll see... I really want the G4 gone. Intel 7140M CPUs
15:02
@PeterGrace true.
Education is WAY out of price range for so many people. It's quite sad in the US.
@PeterGrace That's why I took it, tbh
@BartSilverstrim agreed, hence why I only completed 9 months of college.
Yeah, but at this point I don't necessarily need a degree to get a job.
maybe even less so when this book is done
Yeah. I was in my early 20s when I started here, so it was a good opportunity for me
15:03
@PeterGrace ...book?
Yeah, I'm co-authoring a book with a guy from google.
Honestly, the IT/CSC programs here aren't that great so you'd be doing it for the piece of paper, not for any real knowledge
@MDMarra that's awesome, wish I had done something similar. Now I'm 25, and well......college looks like it'll never happen haha.
@vCole I'll be 27 in Sept. It's never too late man.
@vcole if I go back, I'm going for something I want to learn for fun
15:04
@MDMarra I may go back, for a degree in CompSci.
@PeterGrace you know what the worst part would be. If you did work in the city, your commute would still be shitty and you'd still hate your house situation
@PeterGrace I wanted to go back for Engineering and/or Astronomy
Are a lot of you guys in PA?
I was thinking of going back for economics actually
@ewwhite Well, let me know what you've got, ebay-style -- my current network at home is hurting so I'm looking to upgrade.
@vcole I live in PA but commute up to NYC
@vCole Me and @PeterGrace are both close to Philly (I work in Philly he works in NYC)
And @BartSilverstrim is on the other end of the state
15:05
@PeterGrace that sound gross.
@PeterGrace DO you care about heat and noise?
I commute from RI to CT
1.5 hrs
My commute is usually around an hour with traffic
I roll out of bed onto the commuter train, and am at work in 16 minutes :P
each way, it sucks but I'm done in less then 4 days now. I had been living close to here.
15:06
@ewwhite not terribly. If it's a roaring jet engine at idle then maybe I'd be given pause
@MDMarra I'm at the top/middle of PA. Moo.
My new place is right near 30th st station. I'm looking forward to being able to take the R5 train into work
@mdmarra awesome!
I was looking into possibly moving to PA.
that's really convenient.
15:06
downtown montreal is literally the best place in the world.
Yeah, I'm maybe 5-10 min tops to Radnor station
Seemed like a cool place to be, lots of tech stuffs too.
@vcole it's a wonderful state to live in. I'm trying my damnedest not to move out of PA.
So it's gonna be super easy and they pay for Septa monthly passes
@Basil For traffic he means
15:07
My car is going to love not commuting into the city any more
My car is about to explode from 150+ miles of driving a day.
@gparent It's also generally a good place to work. Plenty of things to do.
but Boston is pretty sweet, so I'll probably stay there for a bit. :)
But yeah, if anyone is looking for a sysadmin position in higher ed, it's a good opportunity for someone that wants to learn fast, get their hands on a lot of shit, and maybe get a free degree. It's probably not a great choice for someone that has a ton of experience though
I just can't stand how crowdy it is and how much traffic there is downtown
15:08
I tried to convince my boss to drop Senior from the title for new highers, since it's sort of unnecessary
@MDMarra I may have applied, if I didn't already accept my current offer. Doh.
@gparent You wouldn't want to drive here, that's for sure
If you get tube access then it isn't bad I guess
metro reaches pretty far
@PeterGrace I haven't heard it outside the data center :)
15:09
When it isn't smoke bombed
@gparent Trains are way better imo- they almost never stop or are late
@Basil Where do you live?
Is the metro late that often? I figured it'd be hard to be late when you're rolling underground
@JeffFerland montreal
@gparent seems like they're announcing service outages every week
@gparent Depends on equipment maintenance and the competence of the logistics people who do scheduling
15:10
Oh dang
Also a factor: the number of people who stand in the door when the train is already full
mostly from stupidity of users, though- backpacks on the track, suicides, etc
Yeah... suicide shuts a line down for hours.
Yeah I suppose once you add in all that
no, only 30 minutes or so
there's a few a month
15:11
Actually last time I went in montreal I saw one of the cars pass by with a busted windshield
It slowed us down a bit
I've always said they should offer suicide booths like in futurama, but only in the metro stations so anyone considering jumping has a less painful alternative that won't clog up traffic
that or install cow catchers
You'd probably die fairly soon after impact
I don't know why they bother to stop the train, to be honest.
Either that or have the slowest death ever...
I don't get why people choose trains. Makes a damned mess. Ruins an enigneer's day.
15:12
actually most metro suicide attempts end up in horrible injury, but don't kill.
Looks like a bad idea then..
@PeterGrace Because if the engineer who caved my brother's head in didn't stop, I'd kill him.
One of my dad's friends was a train driver and had a woman step out in front of him. He said he saw her look up and say "I'm sorry" before the train hit.
@JeffFerland I've heard suicides on actual trains are very rare, but we hit a couple drunks a year and the train crews have to be taken care of
@JeffFerland what's the story on this?
15:13
Maybe they should solve it like that, keep a big screen up with the ratio of successful and unsuccessful suicide attempts!
@PeterGrace Brother laid down on tracks 8 months ago.
er, and he survived?
@tombull89 that's depressing.
@PeterGrace I think his point is that you'd be an asshole to keep the train going.
@PeterGrace No. Instant death by trauma.
15:14
Plus they need to check the scene anyway
@JeffFerland No offence, but that's pretty selfish.
It could be a murder
@JeffFerland my condolences.
@vCole unsurprisingly, he quit soon after.
@JeffFerland sorry to hear that.
15:14
@Basil I know. See my above comments.
What if the train had a doctor on it that couldn't get to work and because of that, 10 people died
Most trains are freight, honestly.
passenger traffic is a small fraction of total train traffic
@Basil nationwide yes, but not around here
@tombull89 that would screw with me the rest of my life.
@PeterGrace What if that doctor saves a terrorist who then kills 15? You can't really argue like that.
2
15:16
Boy, The Comms Room is a bundle of fun this afternoon...
What if those terrorists ended up killing 10 future hitlers?
by accident?
Then we should promote accidents
@JeffFerland I'm sorry if my position on this bothers you, given the history. I'm genuinely sad to hear your brother took his life, but I don't necessarily think that having the train stop is going to help anything in the investigation.
15:16
@tombull89 right?
The time it takes to stop a train invalidates the "crime scene" anyway.
@PeterGrace I don't know if doctors are routinely called out to commute in for such a pressing need...
@PeterGrace even using air brakes instead of dynamic, it takes a long ass time to stop a full train
@PeterGrace I'm not so sure about the investigation, but I certainly wouldn't want to have the train (or the motorman) in service after that kind of an incident. There's a reason the MTA forces them to take 3 days off and sit with counselors.
There's usually others there already in the ER.
15:17
@BartSilverstrim true.
I suppose that it's fallacious logic for me to have made that comment
@voretaq7 I'd vote for trains remote controlled by an offsite engineer
no windows
@Basil oh hells no
@voretaq7 Don't forget the users. While the british may be inclined to Keep Calm and Carry On, you can't expect this from everyone aboard.
of course, it'll never happen...
the absolute last thing we need is control lag
15:18
@voretaq7 Automate all the trains!
@gparent The usual reaction in NY is supreme frustration, tempered by mild sympathy for the deceased.
I guess alternately... as a guy who operates a diesel locomotive for a train museum, I don't care what the SOP says, I'm stopping.
@voretaq7 humans always make mistakes. Way more than automation would lag
@voretaq7 Um...isn't that what it's like for anything in NYC?
I'll admit, if I was going to kill myself (and not that I've ever planned to) I'd want to go as painlessly, quickly, and without distress to anybody else.
15:19
@BartSilverstrim we are. We still have someone in the front to work the doors (and pull the red handle when someone jumps in front of the thing)
@tombull89 Nitrogen-saturated environment.
@voretaq7 Suicide is horrible. It's more horrible for the survivors than it is for the person who committed it, but it's even more selfish if 10,000+ people are delayed because they have to fault a track on the northeast corridor for 4 hours to do a "due dilligence" investigation
@voretaq7 I guess I'm in the NY state of mind.
@BartSilverstrim yes, but this is maybe 150 frustrated people all in one place.
(usually in summer, and they shut off the A/C)
@PeterGrace I think most of us in the Northeast have that attitude
The train I ride in the morning is absolutely full, every morning. there are two tracks on the northeast corridor to handle like 20+ trains on that route. If one of those tracks is down for an investigation, a LOT of people are having a real bad day. I'm not in ANY WAY saying the annoyance is a balancer for the horrible grief the family might be feeling, I'm just saying, it's more than 150 people affected.
15:21
@PeterGrace People die every day. All those accidents you hear about on the traffic reports? People die in them all the time. Everyone dies eventually. That said, most of these deaths don't force tens of thousands of people to be unproductive for a few extra minutes.
People are shocked by death because they're insulated from it
To be honest TV probably steals more productivity than suicides or train delays.
Does someone remember the Windows tech to pick a DNS server based on a policy?
@BartSilverstrim TV has never made me late to work
@Basil Exactly. And in some cases, hours. The last time someone committed suicide on the route I take, not only was my train delayed for 45 mins on the rails, but they had to take an alternate track to another station then bus 10+ cars of people to my station.
@Basil Being at work doesn't guarantee you're productive :-)
15:22
@ChrisS isn't it tied up in "network location awareness" or sommat?
Dan
Dan
@ChrisS Edited cause I talk rubbish!
2
@voretaq7 Sounds familiar
i'm pretty sure that's what it is on workstations, might be the same on servers
@PeterGrace Tragedy on an individual level shouldn't be allowed to affect so many people.
@voretaq7 Nope, that's the thing that identifies if Win is connected to the Interenet or not.
15:24
@ChrisS hm, i thought it could also tweak configuration based on which network it thinks you're connected to
BUT ANYWAY -- Takeaway from this conversation, guys: If you're going to commit suicide, please drown yourself, preferably not in your house. Maybe stick your head in a bucket of water in a local park so as to avoid hurting anyone else in the process.
@voretaq7 That did lead me to a search that turned up the right answer though! "Name Resolution Policy Table (NRPT)"
In a park? Where there are kids?
Yeah that certainly would be better
I guess you don't visit parks so you'd be happily commuting to work
@BartSilverstrim damn it! I don't know. Just don't do it in your bathtub. Then your family has to remember you did it there every time they take a shower.
15:25
@BartSilverstrim Won't somebody PLEASE think of the children?!?.... EW! NOT LIKE THAT YOU PERV!
(While they have to close parts of the park and everyone watches horrified)
@PeterGrace How big does this home server setup of yours need to be?
I also have a lead on a small rack...
As long as it doesn't hold up someone's commute,...
@ewwhite I have a full dell 42U rack in my basement already, thanks though.
haha...
15:26
@ewwhite but to be honest, I'm considering both of those G5's if the price is right
@PeterGrace That's quite the setup...
Acquire boat. Sail out from shore until you can't see land anymore. Punch hole in hull. Wait.
Land Of The Free, just don't fuck with my bus.
3
@PeterGrace wow.
@gparent Welcome to New York, Land of the Free, home of the "GODDAMNIT I'M LATE GET OUTTA MY WAY!"
2
15:26
My home setup is quite small by comparison.
@BartSilverstrim You get the wrong impression of me. I do care about people, genuinely. I just care about everyone equally.
I don't have a home setup really Q_Q
I wish I had a place I could put noisy servers in.
Unfortunately I have to focus on silencing mine
@gparent Put them outside
when people complain say it's an air conditioner
haha
15:27
(you know you could get a little 12U rack and put a fake AC cover around it...)
Funnily enough air conditioners that extrude from windows are not allowed at my new appartment.
Sound isolating rack helps keep the wife from hurting me.
Sounds like a wife accessory too.
lol
Cool shit where'd you get that
15:28
@gparent there are lots of companies that make 'em
Sadly, live at home at the moment. So no room for anything :(
Yeah I'm in an appartment
We're moving in a bigger one though, with an office room.
Thinking about getting a 2 bedroom apartment, so I can have an office.
expensive apple-flavored ones
15:29
@gparent You can get them anywhere... but if you're in NYC or LA, it's easy to find them used, cheap...
We moved into a new house - good news was that I got a server room, bad news is I ended up having to put in a 100A panel and a dedicated AC unit to keep it all intact
My new house must have space for a datacenter.
At least for 1 rack.
A lot of recording studios and Mac users like them...
@PeterGrace your electric bill must be insane.
Eh, during the summer, 250-300$
15:30
@vCole I have a large bedroom (one bedroom apartment) and I have half of it set up like a home office.
Not too terrible for a 4 bedroom house.
@vCole The fiber optic line from L3 is more expensive
Not the greatest, but better than an extra 200-300 per month
@gparent Hahaha, I just got comcast.
@MDMarra pretty sure my girlfriend would murder me if I did that once I have an apartment.
15:30
@vCole Plus the small dam he keeps running for backup power
:D
@PeterGrace I didn't think you didn't care about people.
My home server is sitting in a HAF 932 case. The massive sized fans keep it very quiet.
Mine's in a Antec P80
Which is like 10 years old
Realistically, that's probably an accurate summary of what people actually behave as, though.
@vCole Haha, WELL, I originally sold it to my fiance as her home office. Then, I slowly took it over, piece by piece and now it's mine. Mwahahaha
15:31
@MDMarra hahaha.
@PeterGrace and 2-4 tons of cooling?
Luckily, my girlfriend wouldn't be moving in with me but still I think she'd be a bit irritated listening to fans going while...well yeah
This is a family chatroom!
@vCole Nothing wrong with listening to fans while doing the dishes.
@vCole If the fans don't speed up while you're doing it you're doing it wrong!
@vCole Remind her she'd fit in a full size rack.
15:32
Lmfao Bart
lol at all of that.
And if the door is tinted no one can hear her.
Get a big enough AC and you can barely hear the fan
@BartSilverstrim Please re-read that for a moment.
That too.
My bedroom at my parents
is so freakin' hot.
That's just from my PC being in there, and not even on all the time.
and the 46" LCD & Xbox 360. But that's about it, it's hot all the time.
15:34
@BartSilverstrim cough*TapeSafe*cough
@vCole I have a i7-930 at home OCed to 4.2 GHz, a 6 HDD file server, a small DHCP/DNS box, 3 monitors.
Why is today dragging? FML.
I have an AC unit in my room
If I turn it on, and play BF3 for a while
I can actually walk along the outside wall
And feel the temperature change
@voretaq7 Duct tape, rope and candles. Walmart cashier thinks it's weird.
Before I put in the AC, I could only run one or two systems and a couple of routers before the room hit 90.. I ended
Up with a 2.5 ton unit and now it is mostly cool enough
15:35
@gparent mine's just a 4ish year old PC.
and 2 x 22" LCDs
Also every time I talk about my file server I remember that I have to fix the debian install that bugged a week ago
@vCole During Winter I turn heating off, and during summer I run AC almost constantly.
I need to upgrade :(
@vCole My landlord hasn't implemented any rules, and they can't count the electricity
MUAHAAHAHA
@vCole Next month though I'm starting to pay for it and it will suck.
15:36
@gparent ouchies.
I'm smart though, when I made the file server I decided to make my first AMD purchase since it was a file server and didn't need much juice.
I'm also running on 6x WD Greens (which isn't that smart for a RAID, but ends up using less power).
As for my gaming machine, well... I might start shutting it down I guess.
my PC is my gaming machine, and everything else.
Might keep this rig for gaming, it's powerful enough for that.
15kva of ups and I am running out - I think everyone wants to upgrade
but I'd like something beefier
@rnxrx sounds like you need a bigger UPS...
15:39
It's just a Q6600/8GB/nVidia 500 Ti/400 WD SATA 7200RPM
nothing special.
Yeah, I used to have my gaming machine and a Atom 330 file server, but I decided to upgrade it into a full-fledged file server
So now it's over RAID1/10, a sizable amount of ram for caching, decent quad-core proc
I'd like an ESXi lab.
That's more or less what I'm going for.
Not that you need 100 cores for sharing files but it makes everything smoother.
@voretaq7 or less stuff... Oddly the servers aren't the worst of it - network gear is pretty awful
15:42
Oh, speaking of spring cleaning. Anyone need any old SGI Indys or a sparcstation 5? I also have some cisco 2600's and miscellaneous switches.
I should put together a google doc for swapmeet.
@PeterGrace Depending how expensive shipping is, I'm really lacking in the cisco routing and switching department
2600's are pretty low-powered, fyi -- they will slow down your network if you use one as a baby-pix.
Especially if it's the 10Base-T models
If you only have 2600s I'll pass, I have one home too
I'm running a Mikrotik RB450G as my home router at the moment.
Depends on the 2600 - 2690's are still supported, 2650's weren't bad
Max out the RAM and they are decent lab routers
I had two but one of them broke down, not sure why.
I flashed the latest IOS on both of them, and it worked fine
I booted one a few weeks ago and it said the image was too big for the device
After it used to run perfectly fine...
15:46
@gparent I think I have two 2611xms and two 2600s
Probably busted RAM or something
upgrade the bootrom
definitely have 1 working 2611xm which I took out of service last week.
@gparent - I've run into that issue before... It's almost always a firmware problem. If it's RAM the box is primitive enough that it'll stack dump in spectacular ways
One thing I have that's very, very rare: hothardware.com/Reviews/…
as far as I know, it still works. I don't have a connector to plug it into.
If anyone's a fan of SGI equipment, like I am, I'd love to give it a new home for the cost of shipping.
15:52
See that guy that got shot in Miami for having a snack near the freeway? They're sticklers for that no-hitchiker thing along freeways there.
@PeterGrace I remember my old Sparcstation 5 pizza box. Took something like 20 hours to the Oracle section of our app's install on it.
hahaha
I've wanted to play with a NeXT station.
Or an old Amiga.
I miss the Indy from college.
@rnxrx I'm fairly certain it's a hardware problem because it was caused while the device was shut down.
@rnxrx I upgraded the IOS, the device ran fine for a few hours, I shut it down, opened it again a few months later to do some different tests, and it wouldn't boot anymore.
@gparent sometimes that happens - upgrade the IOS and it looks fine but won't reboot after that
15:56
No I mean I rebooted after the IOS upgrade.
@rnxrx Always adds some excitement to the list of things to do.
The device was 100% functional, I'm not sure how to make it clearer than that
It died in its sleep.
@BartSilverstrim You can have one of these Indys! Relive your youth! I also have a 24" 13w3 monitor to go with it.
One? How many are you hoarding?!
It could be a firmware problem but it would've still happened while the device was powered off, which seems odd.
15:57
The message about insufficient memory for the image happens
it isn't necessarily bad hardware - or completely bad hardware, anyhow
...loose memory?
I reseated it
@BartSilverstrim 3.
image itself could be corrupted, could have reverted to an older rommon version (if cmos got lost)
I have 3 indys that I believe are all in working order.
Two might still actually have IRIX; one has debian-mips
15:58
@rnxrx Those are good points actualy
Any of the IRIX machines have applications on them for doing something?
Not 100% sure. One's from a dumpster dive at microsoft, I've never actually booted it to see if there are fun toys on it.
the other one I booted and turned on xeyes.
It's a little scary that you just sort of acquire these random things...
I have a ton of Cisco gear - literally everything up to (and including) 6500's... A good chunk of them have shown up unbootable. It's a pain in the ass and a trip down memory lane with stupid ancient bootloaders, but the recovery rate is surprisingly high
I have a penchant for hardware and people learn this.
You know those people on hoarders? I have that, with computer gear.
Oh, and I have ham gear if people are in need of summa dat.
16:00
tubes?
@rnxrx Vacuum intertubes?
I have a TS-820S that's still in working order.
But not a collection of individual tubes.
@voretaq7 They make the hoovers run.
Filling it out by memory, I need to take a real inventory
He collects things. He is smart...
16:02
I know that Kenwood - friend of mine had one years ago
@voretaq7 Gotta love the tubes - something completely analog is soothing
haha
ok, lunch time. back in a bit.
Later, @PeterGrace
this has gone unloved since last September can someone else chuck a downvote on it so the cleaning fairies get it at the weekend serverfault.com/questions/312798/… please
@Iain I was actually working up an answer to that
16:20
@voretaq7 Remember that bit about me looking like I was moonlighting in a used car dealership because of the traffic cone and missing carpeting? It just got worse.
Classy, innit?
Does anyone here have LXC experience?
@ewwhite sorry, no.

Q: local DNS not working properly

bryceI'm having troubles setting up a LAN DNS server. I have multiple devices on a network and I would like my domain name to work on the LAN via any of those devices. The DNS server resides on the same machine as my webserver, which is a mac mini with Snow Leopard server. When I remotely connected vi...

holy paragraph
I was reading that. Sounds rather confangled...figuring out what is going on is more work than I think I want to put into it.
I don't even feel like reading it.
16:28
tl;dr
I really can't read that.
Please use paragraphs. It's as if your SF question was using jumbo frames. — gparent 2 mins ago
NICE!
Cannot wait to be done supporting South America
Making me work through my lunch and crap.
@vCole Honestly, I'd rather support EMEA than South America. 4 hours ahead is just annoying enough that it's a real PITA.
@Adrian wtf is going on in your office?
@voretaq7 The guys that were supposed to pull out the carpet and put new in figured that patching it with a "best effort" match would be good enough. They spent the entire 15 minutes of explanation of the work order talking to other people on their phones.
So we ended up with blue-grey instead of slate grey.
16:39
@Adrian also, language barrier
Portuguese and Spanish
our parent company is from Germany
so that, too.
@vCole Ah. The people I was working with in Brazil spoke pretty good English. They all spoke German also and had decent German accents. I can do German translation far better than I can figure out the Brazilian Portuguese-accented English.
@Adrian agreed. No one there speaks English that well.
so I'm like, fml
Our new HR person is freaky. Speaks English, French, Spanish, German, Dutch, Czech, Romanian, and Portuguese. Creeps me right the hell out.
@Adrian . . . . . !
@Adrian whoa
16:44
@voretaq7 Yeah, I have a feeling that we'll be getting this fixed and it'll be done for free.
@vCole Yeah, she's pretty cool too, which is nice. Definitely not uptight.
@Adrian good on her then, super impressive.
I barely know English
haha
@MikeyB Why thank you. That got modded 8 times actually, aha.
