ASA 5505 -> 5510... the interface differences, plus cleanup.
and a jump in ASA version...
from 8.3.x to 8.4.x
I figured there was more to the story =]
it wasn't the config, however.
but it sucks not knowing the specific cause.
They changed the ASDM interface quite a bit in this version.
The Reiser guy is at it again

A: 8 hard drives, very same model, software RAID0, terrible performance

poigedd's output: 8082081648 bytes (8.1 GB) copied, 19.3765 s, 417 MB/s — 6 HDDs partially in RAID-6 (There's RAID-10 as well on the same disks), ~ 530 MB/sec in peaks, ~ 400 MB/sec average. Windows 2008Linux 3.3.4 Any ideas, what might be the problem? Sure. :-)

"Use Linux not Windows" was basically his answer.
How did he get 2000 rep?
Dan
Dan
He's a fucking dolt
@MDMarra he's an idiot
13:12
I just downvoted and flagged it
Not getting into it with him again
@MDMarra why do you call him the Reiser guy?
There was an answer he gave yesterday where he was pushing the OP to use Reiser3
When I and others asked, why not XFS since the lead dev for that isn't in jail like Hans Reiser he got insulting
Dan
Dan
@MDMarra I may have edited his answer
@MDMarra he want at it with me and @Joel as well the other day
He's like a mini TomTom, except TomTom is usually right
4
13:18
@MDMarra Hans Reyser killed his wife o.O?
yeah
Why else would Reiser4 be so unstable? :p
Wasn't any old wife, either, was it? Mail order one.
In 1998, while working in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Hans Reiser reportedly selected from a mail-order bride catalogue,[9] and subsequently married, Nina Sharanova
like so.
13:20
Didn't work out how or why though.
Dan
Dan
@LucasKauffman Surely he could've just returned her under warranty
@Dan Nah, once you break her seal, she's your's.
Hans Reiser's neighbors said that they saw him spraying water off something in the driveway for half an hour shortly after Nina went missing and said that his car — a 1988 Honda CRX Si hatchback — disappeared shortly after, and his mother rented a car so Hans could drive hers.
So, apparently there's not much money in making filesystems :p
I wonder how much money Linus Torvalds has
@LucasKauffman He gets paid by the Free Software Foundation, I believe
So that he doesn't have to work for a company and be influenced by their needs
@Dan he rolled the edit back haha
13:29
@MDMarra as if that would happen with his ego
Just flag it
I flagged it as other said said "Thinly veiled use linux not windows crap"
Dan
Dan
@MDMarra Bless
13:48
@MDMarra He's "worked" for the Linux Foundation since he left Transmetta around 2003/2004 IIRC.
I would guess lots of people have made more money off of Linux than he has
If I were him, I'm work for relative peanuts... Helps keep you from getting such a big head and a good source of motivation.
@MDMarra Seems like most of the big breakthroughs in modern computing have come from people who either aren't getting paid for it at all, or are getting paid minimally... It's a bit of a conundrum for the rock-star developer paradigm.
@LucasKauffman Hence murderfs instead of reiserfs…
Is reiserfs bsd?
I'll rebrand reiserfs 3 to murderfs
build a website
pretend to be Hans Reiser gone crazy
14:05
I'm still getting downvotes for my answer on that filesystem question
Clumsy:
http://serverfault.com/questions/384913/password-problems-with-postgresql
Oh, look. Stack Overflow doesn't migr...nevermind.
14:17
Holy shit... $120 for an 8GB PC3 1066MHz RDIMM? Have times ever changed.
@jscott apropos of the drink attribute, our first IT director added a staff record field for hat size in our in-house mgmt. app.
@Adrian Was the company a baseball team?
@jscott Gee, that's a mighty big head you got there.
Gah! Eaten by quickedit!
14:32
@jscott A homeless shelter, actually. Sadly, that workplace is less weird and has more dysfunctional than the old days. What comes from trying to run a 500 person org the same way you ran a 50 person org, I suppose.
I have an inexplicable feeling of accomplishment when I manage to remove an orange peel in one complete piece.
Dan
Dan
Hahaha
Someone (I'm guessing Resier FS) has been through a load of my Q's and downvoted me :D
10 times
@poige does this work?
Paying back the same coin? Surely. At least a bit
Dan
Dan
@poige Not really - I downvoted because I thought you were wrong
@Dan, the same thoughts but regarding you — in general
Dan
Dan
14:42
@poige What, you think I'm wrong on all of my answers?
2Dan, they're yours, aren't they?
@Dan I wouldn't sweat it, vote fraud detection will probably undo it at the end of day.
Dan
Dan
@poige Wow.
@jscott, all the more
10 times? yeah, that'll get countered by the vote fraud detection.
@poige the more you do it, the more your account gets noticed by the high-ups. Don't. Do. It.
14:45
Yeah. That's just warm fuzzy, nothing more
Dan
Dan
@tombull89 He's not the sharpest tool in the box
@Chopper Do you know if HP has a 64-bit HPQFlash utility?
Back in a bit, gents. Time to go do battle with Seattle traffic.

@poige Please don't invite me into chat rooms. If you wish to talk, feel free to do it here - you have 30 minutes before I go home
14:54
@ChrisS For the BIOS?
@ewwhite Yep; looking for a 64-bit utility to flash the BIOS image
@Dan all rooms (mod rooms notwitstanding) can have their transcripts read by all.
@tombull89, :)
Dan
Dan
@tombull89 Yeah, but I can't be faffed with multiple rooms
Although, really, you're better doing it here as there's more people to have an input.
14:56
@ChrisS on a workstation, right? hmm...
Dan
Dan
@tombull89 I'm not even sure what's to discuss. He's thrown a hissy fit and downvoted a load of random questions. It's only 12 points anyway
@ewwhite Laptops, same thing, but I'm running it under WinPE where there's no 32-bit WOW subsys, so I can't run the standard hpwflash utility.
So there's someone searching and actively downvoting your answers out of spite?
Well, ok. It seems there're 2 guys namely @Dan and @MDMarra who really have something against my answer mentioning Reiserfs.
Well, Mark did have a good point...
14:58
@ewwhite If so, don't worry about it, the bot will find it tonight.
Since the latest exchange of niceties they haunted my next answer.
Dan
Dan
@ewwhite Yeah, I had a debate with @poige and now he's sulking
@poige Look, you can read the chatlogs if you really care but ultimately we felt they were both bad answers and told you why
@Dan already had expressed his burning desire to edit my posts
and today he had his chance
Awesome

Dan
@poige I edited out something you'd included in strikeout in a pretty silly attempt at "OMG, DONT USE WINDOZE GUYZ, LINUX is better"
15:01
@tombull89 Yeah, but every rule can be abused
@tombull89 some people do. Just because they can
@Dan, it's your sick imagination
@Dan, I meant just "That's windoze, what would you expect"
@Dan, moreover I was just joking
Dan
Dan
@poige Okay, you're mental and I'm bored of you now
@poige That's why edits are logged and are publicaly viewable. If you believe someone has abused their edit privledges, flag the post and expain.
@Dan Huh.
Dan
Dan
@tombull89 He didn't need to - he rolled it back and I left it there
I just don't get why I shouldn't have freely expressed my recognition to Reiserfs. Just due to you dislike something about one of the its authors?
@Dan, What was all those dirty jokes bout it for?
15:06
Dear Timelord in Tardis, wasn't the Reiser thing yesterday's chat topic?
@Dan, you left, but there's your trustworthy friend @MDMarra.
Dan
Dan
@poige Dude, I don't "dislike something about one of the authors" - the guy murdered his wife and the company in charge of development disappaeared
@Dan, it's none of my problems.
@Dan, I just don't care since Reiser3 had merged into vanilla kernel
@Dan, it was quite long ago
Dan
Dan
@poige Yes, we were both holding hands while doing it as it happens
@poige I don't get why we're still debating it. The answer got locked and I think we all said what we had to say
@Dan " Reiser4 is pretty advanced, having learnt lessons from previous incarnations. Version 4 now burns down the house and dumps the car in the lake after homocides. – Dan yesterday"
15:09
y'all bitching about the grammar edit I approved? :)
@Dan, so your sweet jokes are quite okay. But mine only <strike>Windows</strike> isn't.
Do we have a no whining for an hour rule in chat? Can we have that rule?
Let it die.. like some file system developer's wife... duck

Dan
Dan
@poige My joke was written in Windows, so absolutely. It was funnier, too
@JeffFerland Rule 1. No live support. Rule 2. Markdown sucks. Rule 3. There is no rule three.
@JeffFerland I could just start kicking people until there are no whiners left. Works?
15:13
@ChrisS That depends on whether my whining about whining counts. I've been around IRC long enough to fear being first if I say yes.
What happened to that guy who wanted to prevent himself installing stuff as an admin? Did the question get deleted?
@JeffFerland, that's why I had invited @Dan into separate chatroom — just to not bother all of you. Sorry.
@tombull89 I think it was just downvoted into oblivion
@poige The correct response is not have an argument in private, but rather to have a drink and play a game.
@ChrisS ah, right, because I posted a comment on it, but I can't find it in my comment history so I presume it got deleted.
15:16
@JeffFerland You've got drinks and you're holding out on me?!
I can't think of a bigger case of spilled milk right now... which is good because that bottle of milk I found behind my beer when I cleaned the fridge yesterday had separated.

Q: Attend DEFCON this year, get a free beer from me

Jeff FerlandIt's the first annual Security.SE DEFCON meetup! It's your excuse to go this year! DOOO ITTTT

@JeffFerland Oh yeah?!?
2
Q: Educause Security Professionals 2012 Meetup

Scott PackMuch like what Jeff is doing for DEFCON, let us in the education realm get together for our event. I propose the evening of Wednesday May 16th. Depending on attendance, I may even buy a round. Who's in, and who knows the area to say where to go?

@ScottPack ... going to DEFCON is not worth it, not even for beer.
@voretaq7 I'm not going to DefCon.
@ScottPack beer not enough to entice you either?
15:22
@voretaq7 Timing is more like it. I'm already going to one out of state conference this summer.
@ScottPack isn't that what the spare parts budget is for?
or the DR contingency fund?
@voretaq7 what's bad about defqon?
@voretaq7 Why aren't you a fan?
@LucasKauffman Nothing inherently, I just don't like industry circle-jerks which is what it seems to have become over the years
@voretaq7 what you mean?
15:29
Hard to justify spending cash on that when I can get boozy with security guys here in NY, and anything cool/interesting that happens there they'll bring back to me
@voretaq7 So someone still needs to go, then
@voretaq7 you know what, you don't have to spend the complete fee, just sponsor a bit for me and I'll write you a complete report
what u say?
@Joel yes, but it doesn't have to be me that sorts through the crap to find the interesting things :-)
@LucasKauffman How industrious of you!
Dan
Dan
Right then, home time finally!
15:31
@LucasKauffman I say I'll buy you a bottle of mid-grade tequila and you can get drunk off your ass while giving me a braindump :-)
Or if there's something really interesting this year we can split a bottle of scotch, to be sipped thoughtfully while discussing how totally fucked the intertubes are
@voretaq7 meh good enough I guess
@voretaq7 Dude. The "Kirkland" brand tequila from Costco is surprisingly good. Mid-grade sipping tequila.
Half to 1/3rd the price of Herradura in Nevada, iirc.
we're generating flags now?
what did I miss this morning?
Not you guys too... ಠ_ಠ
Somebody was being a prick. It's like April showers and May flowers.
15:43
Don't make me have to start killing kittens... Because @WesleyDavid is running out of lives
@Adrian this is the comms room, someone is always being a prick
(it's usually me :-)
@voretaq7 Well, yes, but they were being a prick with ill-intent, which is unusual.
@voretaq7 You're cute :)
Seriously though. Going through and downvoting somebody every last question and answer and popping here and publicly stating so is sufficiently juvenile that it approaches Bridge proportions.
@ScottPack ::backs away:: I...I'm spoken for. the lizard marked me! See? ::holds up lizard bite::
In other news, yeah. I'll be speaking at Security Professionals this year. Anyone who's going should get in touch with me.
15:48
@Adrian Oi.
@Adrian that's pretty lame yeah. But he'll enjoy the massive rep penalty when the serial downvote algorithm sees what he's up to
@voretaq7 how much will his penalty be?
@ArdaXi We're not exactly known as shining stars of maturity ourselves.
If the serial downvote algorithm were given a form I believe it would be...
^ That cat.
More like this
15:51
@ardaxi I've actually been keeping an eye on Bridge to see if it's safe enough for my son to hang out in. He's a big gamer-geek, and he'll probably be ready to handle that in a year or so.
You could at least pick a good looking cat....
@LucasKauffman I don't recall offhand, I think it triggers whatever the standard vote fraud penalties are
@ChrisS I wanted an angry cat
Better?
Yours has more of an air of "Yes. Yes I see. Thank you for bringing this to my attention - I'll eat you after my nap."
@ChrisS that's better... though it looks digital :)
nothing makes you happy...
15:53
That one says to me "I SAID AFTER MY NAP MOTHERFUCKER! NOW I MAUL YOU FOR WAKING ME!"
@ChrisS that's not true. I like pie.
...and squirrels
Squirrels started annoying me when they chewed a hole in my bird feeder
@ScottPack I can deal with squirrels. I despise the rats that do the same.
@ScottPack Squirrels started annoying me in college. They knew what pizza was, and they wanted some.

Q: Strange Server Problems

user1315802I'm having some server issues, hopefully someone might have some insight. There is one server in my workplace which is set up strangely and I don't understand it. Every machine can ping/access/share with every other machine on the network except this one server. It is inaccessible except for an ...

@Adrian, Huh. I won't be upset even with 0 level. Just because I've seen all this "juvenile" leveled group of ppl, so no delusions. It's worth of it all.
16:05
@poige Whatever floats your boat, old boy.
Seems like I missed a little bit while meeting with our Cisco guys
@MDMarra Get them straightened out finally?
Haha, not really
@poige I assume you're the one that went and serial -1'd a bunch of my stuff. There's a vote fraud algorithm that runs twice daily to correct things like that.
Sorry that you wasted your time.
@poige No offense, but it seems you are the only one here that's always sticking with his opinion, you actually said something was wrong which I actually tested on my own machine. Now who seems to be the know-it-all here then =) ?
@Adrian This is my Cisco impression "We have this software product. It's fine. We're EOLing it. It's being replaced by a different product that does the same exact thing. The migration SKU costs $1995 retail. Bend over."
16:08
@MDMarra ah, for some reason I was thinking it was your in-house Cisco people you were referring to.
No no, Cisco sales peeps
@MDMarra when I built my home cisco lab one of the devices was EOL, cisco wouldn't even provide old IOS bins anymore
@LucasKauffman, what is it about?
We don't have enough Cisco kit here for in-house people. We use Extreme gear for switching/routing
@poige the iptables question where a guy listed the rules but failed
16:09
The only Cisco kit we have is wireless and NAC
@MDMarra try 'well hp/whoever are doing something similar for far less with lifetime support etc., so see ya' - then watch them drop their trousers
@LucasKauffman, the one with your failed guess and even missed what was the real text? so?
@MDMarra That reminds me that I have to poke @MikeyB.....
@Chopper3 Yeah, we've done it more than once. Our sales guy ends up with his foot in his mouth now and again.
Don't they all, though.
@Adrian You should see it shortly.
16:11
@MikeyB Sweet. Thanks. =)
@ChrisS I don't know about that 64-bit question you asked sorry
@poige see my failed 'guess' according: I did the same command on my own debian machine and got the SAME result as a normal user
[root@LivingOnTheEdge ~]# w
 09:10:33 up 997 days, 13:51,  8 users,  load average: 0.07, 0.15, 0.13
so how can I be wrong then? please enlighten me
@LucasKauffman Leave him be. There's an ignore button if you click on his avatar.
16:12
yea
@LucasKauffman, go and the the subject you're citing. There's real answer
He'll get a decect rep penalty for vote fraud and he might stop blathering if we just ignore him
Woot! I'm still sad that the schmucks in Facilities cut the building's mains for 3 hours just a week before my server rolled 1000 days.
at least I'm not juvenile enough to make childish chatrooms =)
You guys are STILL fighting?
16:13
@LucasKauffman, surely. You can not face your opponent alone.
@MDMarra Indeed. One thing I like about .SE is that the ignore user function actually works quite well.
@poige are you still banging on about RaiserFS? The only files he's interested in these days are the ones you can fit inside cakes snuck into the visitor's room, the filesystem's as dead as his wife
3
@LucasKauffman, group against one it way interesting (and safer) deal
I wonder if I can exceed the rep cap today with the rep that will get added back when the vote fraud mechanism runs. The fraudulent votes might actually help me today.
@MDMarra, poor child
16:15
@Chopper3 Indeed. I think we ditched Reiser in 2005? About the time that we convinced our director to quit running strange experimental stuff in production.
who is arguing with who?
Same dude insisted that we run our production PostgreSQL boxes with a Xen kernel back in 2006-ish. The entire Postgres list chimed in and told him to stop being stupid and run a proper kernel.
гыыы
and vote fraud?
ah is this it?

Q: EXT4 "No space left on device (28)" incorrect

Aiden BellI have been through the other questions/answers regarding inode usage, mounting issues and others but none of those questions seem to apply... df -h /dev/sdd1 931G 100G 785G 12% /media/teradisk df -ih /dev/sdd1 59M 12M 47M 21% /media/teradisk Basically, I have an EXT4 form...

@Aaron I got -1'd on 10 answers in a row all a few seconds apart
No big, it'll get corrected
16:19
The OP was a bit rude, too.
The funny thing it Reiser3 is the only FS in kernel 3.0.x (stable Ubuntu server) which handled properly removing of directory with tones of files (~ 1e+6) in.
@ewwhite I dunno. I've seen stupid implementations like that. One app I supported downloaded 112,000 zipped files/hour off some OSS/BSS equipment and had to unpack the files and repack them into grouping based on time and data type. That was about 10M files/hour when it was running at full-strength.
Neither XFS, nor Btrfs, nor EXT4 couldn't. So I won't be surprised if at last the OP would use namely it.
Kept a V490 humming along at a pretty good usage percentage.
How horrible stupid all this fuzz would be looking?
16:25
@poige I don't understand that last sentence sorry, could you rephrase it please?
Has anyone used the Cisco NCS virtual appliance?
@Chopper3, never mind.
@Chopper3, what I've learned today regarding serverfault is really worth of being minused.
@MDMarra about to, but not yet
The sales guy I was just talking to tried to tell me it listed at $20k. I said VIRTUAL again, and he was like "ohhhh, I'll have to get back to you"
While I appreciate that you like ReiserFS (and even that it has a number of interesting features) it's pretty much been leapfrogged by ZFS, and the future of its development is uncertain at best.
You're more than welcome to evangelize if you can do so civilly, but if you can't maintain some professional decorum, particularly on the main site, I think you should consider taking a day off and enjoying the weather or something...
2
16:26
@poige 'minused'?
Even they can't find stuff on their own website
@Chopper3 methinks "downvoted"?
@voretaq7, thanks for advice
@voretaq7, and being quite neutral in all this ergh. stuff
@voretaq7, in no case I'm just a single FS's user.
@poige If it's any comfort when I was young and inexperienced I over-advocated OS/2's virtues (and 'Thirtysomething' too but that's a different story) - but eventually I grew up and realised that not only could I back the wrong horse but it was actually quite common
@voretaq7, I use almost everything except Nilfs, at it seems. And that's why I know which one suits better for certain tasks.
16:29
@Chopper3 hey! OS/2 ROCKS! I don't care what people say!
::mutters something about viruses::
@voretaq7 HPFS Til I Die!!!
But this industry is partially about picking the winners...
@Chopper3 I want to convert my environment to zfs at some point, but I don't relish reinstalling all those systems...
@Chopper3, not my case. Once again: I use the best fitting tool for tasks. It could be NTFS (but rare)
@voretaq7 Long live UFS!
16:30
It's one of the reasons I was so against KVM versus VMWare in my last job.
but I've made plenty of bad calls...
@ewwhite ReiserFS was a winner for a while - If it still had an active development team I'd even advocate using it in some cases - but ZFS can handle the many-tiny-files scenario pretty well...
"VMWare Server 2.0"
I was pretty much all XFS since 2004...
@MDMarra ...until such time as I can be arsed to reinstall everything. :-)
DAT72 or DDS5 tape drives...
FML. Added 8G RAM to a Win2008 WTS box and now it's running like crap.
16:32
WTS?
UFS+SoftUpdates does everything I need, and I've abused UFS filesystems mightily with no problems
@Adrian WANTZ MOAR!
MOAR RAMS!!!
windows terminal services, or whatever the new acronym is this year.
ahhhh
I forget now
RDS maybe?
Been telling them for 2+ years that running the databases on the same box as the user sessions was stupid. But that particular fiasco was deployed before I got here.
@Adrian Remote Desktop Services
I bet for Windows Server 9 they're going to say "Well desktops are a thing of the past, so we're going with a new term: SCREEN! No one's used that, right?"
16:37
:-)
@Joel Ah, yes. That's it.
@Adrian 64-bit?
@Chopper3 I wish. 32bit with a PAE kernel patch that a padawan found on the MS website.
@Adrian How much did you have prior to adding the 8GB?
@Adrian ew
16:39
@Chopper3 8. We're at 16 now.
@Adrian oh ok, hmmm...odd, what make/model of server?
@Chopper3 POS SuperMicro.
and it's really noticably slower?
@Chopper3 oh yeah. keystroke lag of 5-10 seconds.
wow - you didn't convert it to RaiserFS at the same time did you? ;)
2
16:41
@Chopper3 No, that was the LAST boss. ReiserFS ON ALL THE THINGS!
Fsck it. I'm gonna reboot it later. And if that doesn't work, I'll pull the RAM. I have too much stuff to do to worry about a server that's supposed to be deprecated in a few weeks.
@voretaq7 My thoughts exactly. PAE is like an eastern european knockoff of a designer watch
@Chopper3 Our biggest technical problem is that I'm the senior admin, really. I'm certainly not up to @ewwhite's standard, but my chops beat the living hell out of anybody else they've had in a decade.
@Adrian make sure you reboot it 3 times
@Joel those knockoffs actually keep good time. PAE just sux.
@voretaq7 I kept a tab with your Postgres question open for a week, glad you got a good answer
It makes me think we need a real DBA around here
16:48
@TylerShads Ah, yes. Forgot that rebooting it THREE times is required for funky Windows stuff.
@Joel Ah, but there's DBA.se.
Community fracturing, THUMBS UP!
@MDMarra We should have an *.se for each programming language! Let's see how SO deals with that.
But I actually meant "here at work"
I dunno. I think DBA deserves its own site
@Adrian Oh, I'm a hack!
16:51
urge to star rising, rising...
@ewwhite Meh. I'm not all that impressed by the throat-beardy Olde Guyz who claim to have everything memorized. Most of those guys seem to be able to do one thing well and not as adaptable.
@Adrian If there's one thing I've learned in the last few weeks, being some basic level of personable while having tech knowledge is gob-smacking to employers
@Joel Yeah. Just need a good resume' to get past the HR filter.
@Adrian ! I spoke with a recruiter yesterday. She said that companies don't even look at your skills. They only look at your experience. Like if you "know" MongoDB but you never used it in production, then it's worthless to them
Caveat emptor of course, but she advised me to work any real experience into am experience bullet-point instead of leaving it to languish in the "skills" section
@Joel weird. I've gotten the exact opposite advice
