@MDMarra Seems like most of the big breakthroughs in modern computing have come from people who either aren't getting paid for it at all, or are getting paid minimally... It's a bit of a conundrum for the rock-star developer paradigm.

@ardaxi I've actually been keeping an eye on Bridge to see if it's safe enough for my son to hang out in. He's a big gamer-geek, and he'll probably be ready to handle that in a year or so.

@Chopper3 Indeed. I think we ditched Reiser in 2005? About the time that we convinced our director to quit running strange experimental stuff in production.
Same dude insisted that we run our production PostgreSQL boxes with a Xen kernel back in 2006-ish. The entire Postgres list chimed in and told him to stop being stupid and run a proper kernel.

The funny thing it Reiser3 is the only FS in kernel 3.0.x (stable Ubuntu server) which handled properly removing of directory with tones of files (~ 1e+6) in.
@ewwhite I dunno. I've seen stupid implementations like that. One app I supported downloaded 112,000 zipped files/hour off some OSS/BSS equipment and had to unpack the files and repack them into grouping based on time and data type. That was about 10M files/hour when it was running at full-strength.
While I appreciate that you like ReiserFS (and even that it has a number of interesting features) it's pretty much been leapfrogged by ZFS, and the future of its development is uncertain at best. You're more than welcome to evangelize if you can do so civilly, but if you can't maintain some professional decorum, particularly on the main site, I think you should consider taking a day off and enjoying the weather or something...
@poige If it's any comfort when I was young and inexperienced I over-advocated OS/2's virtues (and 'Thirtysomething' too but that's a different story) - but eventually I grew up and realised that not only could I back the wrong horse but it was actually quite common
@ewwhite ReiserFS was a winner for a while - If it still had an active development team I'd even advocate using it in some cases - but ZFS can handle the many-tiny-files scenario pretty well...
Been telling them for 2+ years that running the databases on the same box as the user sessions was stupid. But that particular fiasco was deployed before I got here.

@Chopper3 Our biggest technical problem is that I'm the senior admin, really. I'm certainly not up to @ewwhite's standard, but my chops beat the living hell out of anybody else they've had in a decade.
@ewwhite Meh. I'm not all that impressed by the throat-beardy Olde Guyz who claim to have everything memorized. Most of those guys seem to be able to do one thing well and not as adaptable.

@Adrian ! I spoke with a recruiter yesterday. She said that companies don't even look at your skills. They only look at your experience. Like if you "know" MongoDB but you never used it in production, then it's worthless to them
Caveat emptor of course, but she advised me to work any real experience into am experience bullet-point instead of leaving it to languish in the "skills" section
