@ShaneMadden Whew, I think it's safe.
@WesleyDavid That's what she wants you to think.
@ShaneMadden tis true!
@RebeccaChernoff D=
/me runs screaming
05:14
ahh yes, the ancient Egyptian god of frustration
@WesleyDavid I have no choice but to picture you and imagine your voice like this now.
@RebeccaChernoff I approve this message.

So according to Alexa, Serverfault gets most traffic from the search term `sftp port`
That's... random.
top 2 results if you google that
According to Google's keyword tool, 22,200 search for that or a close variant each month.
If I recall my conversaion rate studies, holding the top two positions should rake in like 75% of the total traffic.
so that's about 16K clicks a month on that one keyword alone
The first post that returns as 111,032 views already in two years. The second has 32,022 in two years
Nice.
05:55
views and visits are different, and we track visits conservatively

Morning All
Yep. Working in Germany this week, so it's interesting to see the chat activity in this timezone versus the US.
@ewwhite Normally @Iain & @Chopper3 are in here, seems not today.

Morning - how are things on the Western Front?
09:26
G'day, $deity my head hurts and not just from yesterdays festive drinking
Well, wow. What a shitstorm that was
Yesterday when I read back and saw @voretaq7’s message that I linked to in my meta question something gelled and I realised what had been bothering me about chat for some time – this is a sewer. We all need to let off steam unfortunately the profanity has become somewhat the norm rather than the exception.
I was hoping that my post would cause a certain amount of introspection, just like the Snark one, unfortunately people got all dramatic, acted like their PHB wanted all their system passwords and sadly the rest is history.
I’m not actually offended btw but I do believe it’s offensive
Hi Iain. Yes, the storm spewed up quite the clusterfuck but it's (ofcourse) not your fault
It's a valid point/complaint, but I really wish you just said something here to us instead
If you read the transcript for yesterday (it's only 11 pages or so..) you'll see that we eventually all agree, and that certain blue mods were speaking about things they don't know anything about
The stuff that happened with Chopper doesn't have anything to do with it, it just upset everyone BEFORE they got to read your meta post
there was a sense of agreement here later on.. the boobs meme is gone
@pauska Indeed. The mayor part of the clusterf* has to do with this meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/112691/…
I'm pretty sure "flag all the X" stays though :-D
But hey - we're done with the drama now
Dan

Can I get back to moaning about the random things that happen throughout the day, now?
@Dan Yes, please do

:)
(I've already flagged the answer, but the user should also be nuked from earth)
09:50
@pauska Funny, if you flag it, the flag-window is also transparent because of the downvotes.
Well, it's the last day of term before the kids break up for christmas and I've not had any "HALP MY DVD ISNT PLAYING" helpdesk tickets yet.
Looks like I need to get transcript-reading too :/
@BartDeVos That's got to be a bug?
@pauska I didn't know @chopper3 had stopped modding till much later. I'm saddened but not surprised by that. He has said several times he was going to step down at the next election and he was showing signs of being burned out by it.
@tombull89 Yeah, I think i've seen it pass on m.SE
@pauska meta is where we discuss things. Saying something here would have just delayed saying the same thing on meta till a short time later :(
@Iain Well - yes, usually
Dan
Dan
09:58
@Iain I completely disagree with this - the reaction would've been completely different had the Meta post spawned from a discussion on here
The problem is that someone flagged someone here for being offensive, which lead a ton of blue mods to come here, read the transcript, and THEN read your meta post
which created the shitstormclusterfuck (sorry for the language, but it's highly on target)
@Iain I think a lot of people (including me) didn't see it coming. That's why they didn't understand.
I didn't see it coming either but like I said @voretaq7's message kinda gelled
10:49
Hello folks. Nice to see you @Iain
@Iain reading back the comments you wrote in chat, I don't think your post was the problem really (though it was very timely!), rather that it just crossed paths with a situation in here anyway and got dragged into that instead of being considered as a separate point to address in its own right.
@RobMoir yes, it looks like I picked the wrong week to give up ... (swearing)
11:04
Hi.
Anyone managed to bribe @Chopper3 back yet?
Airplane quotes... very nice
Morning @Tom
I guess he's giving it a break. As I think Iain said earlier, regardless of the blowup yesterday he seemed a bit burned out and fed up anyway. God knows being a forum mod is a thankless task at the best of times
@RobMoir Rule with a fist of steel. It feels good.
Morning all
Random q: does anyone go for 'alternative' keyboard layouts that aren't QWERTY?
If so, where do you source your keyboards?
11:19
@growse Get a Das Keyboard? The keycaps are totally blank.
@TomOConnor I sent chopper3 an email a few hours ago. The guy needs a break, I don't think anyone needs to be coaxing him back
He told me he's going to take a few days off to just have a breather, and then he's going to go back to working on his reputation ;)
@Tom I saw that :) Thing is, blank keys aren't so useful for learning a layout
So thankfully we haven't lost one of our finest contributors
@growse True, I suppose. Letraset might be an option :P
I have to say that yesterday's little blowup was a bad advert for being a mod on SF. Not to criticise you guys who are doing it, I just mean to say it shows how much of a thankless task it can be.
11:21
Also, they don't seem to available in the uk
:(
@growse They so are.
@RobMoir Meh, that's the first time in what, two years? I saw mods burnout on other sites I was a moderator of for far less than what it took chopper, but that said, I think you'll find he has a lot of other stuff going on. I think it was perhaps 1/5 moderating and 4/5 life that caused the chain of events that set this going.
@growse I can't remember where I got mine from.. But they are uk available.
I've got a lovely G80-3000 at work.. Clickety.
mark I totally agree with that. I just mean to say its still horrible to see it happen, the way some people kept jabbing at him just because he was a mod they disagreed with, is all
I find moderating a self-fulfilling role. I don't care for thanks - I'm sure I've upset far, far more people than I've helped with my moderating, I do it because I like to see the internet made a better place. Because it's a pretty sucky place most of the time for Q&A
11:24
@Tom I'd love a clickety at work, but my colleagues might consider shooting me
Yeah well I'll give him his dues, I read the transcripts from earlier, I would have just mod-slammed the people that were pissing me off out of the chat room, and to his credit, he didn't
@growse Pfft. They're better for RSI prevention, so they can't really say no ;)
@Tom - interesting, didn't know that
time to flex the expense account
@MarkHenderson I'd have kicked them off Chat, then gone after their pets, families, wives, and AS numbers.
11:26
I'm just looking forward to next week off work to relax
oohh, AS numbers? That's going too far.
there's plenty of stuff there that I'm being paid to be annoyed about
Wife is back from putting my son to bed so I'm going to back to watching our movie
Night
@Tom thanks - I'll order one in the new year. Will have to replace the Apple kb I'm currently using
11:28
er, night mark!
(We're watching Contagion and our son woke up with a cough right in the middle of it. It's ominous)
@MarkHenderson Isolate him.
11:21 <scruff> Please do not feed the intern! He's on a strict diet of snark and sarcasm as we mold him into a Sysadmin. --The IT Team.
@growse you could always get a TomTom keyboard. That's one where the letters are randomly rearranged after each key press.
@growse: There's always the unicomp customiser ;p
any layout you want... if you want to rock it 80s style
Unless you mean the really bizzare sorts of alternate layouts, like what maltron or kinesis use
is currently Superuser's other resident keyboard geek ._.
11:43
@MDMarr I don't know why but that reminds me of the Masochist's Dictionary. All the words in the English language arranged randomly
@JourneymanGeek I'm just wanting to experiment with something like Dvorak
I switched layout on my phone and have picked it up quicker than I expected
@MDMarra: that would probably be hell. Being forced to work with an optimus maximus which did that ;p
or whatever that crazyarse keyboard was called
That's the joy of the TomTom keyboard. His keys aren't even labeled
@Iain glad you're back. We all felt bad when you weren't in chat yesterday because we thought you and chop were gone.
Like you said, it was all certainly timely. There was too much blue in this place yesterday which made it rather uproarious, to say the least.
darn, just when i had my back turned ;p
11:58
And that is how I ended up with my current GF
@KennyRasschaert Funny stuff
Man chat is no fun when all you see is (removed) and then "funny stuff"
unless you had an overactive imagination
@TomOConnor I got an email from him.. he's very tired of mod'ing, so he gave that up. but he's coming back as a regular user, with the aim of being #1 in rep :)
12:13
Thats a good aim ;p
@pauska Cool.
I'm almost tempted to stand in the next mod elections.
well I obviously have no choice since I started the thread on meta
but I hope someone else gets elected than me.. someone with more rep
@pauska I don't think rep is a good factor here.
well, regular users might think so
@pauska Same thing last time
A lot of discussion about it in the last mod election's comments.
12:21
I don't want to pile on this guy, anyone else?
which guy?

Q: Will Amazon SES improve spam filtering through typical spam filtering packages

jdogWe built web applications which create a fair amount of transactional emails, such as tickets, reminders and logging messages. These emails are typically sent to end users, but most of them are also sent to users inside the client organisation, directly or via Bcc. Our solutions are typically ho...

hm, was that migrated? - it was... which is probably why i remember it
12:39
I just got an unexpected £42.30 windfall.. A company i used to work for discovered that they'd forgotten to pay me expenses from 3 years ago.
its all good @tom thats a few drinks at least ;-)
@RobMoir Totally. :D
I'm off to do the grocery shop soon :-)
Frankly, I'd rather be at work than in a supermarket at this time of the year but its got to be done
@TomOConnor: Meh... I got 5 pings here not for me. :D
@TomWijsman And that's my problem how? :3
12:50
Where did I say that's your problem? ^^
I dunno.
server porn.
13:09
@Iain Glad to see you back in here <3 I promise to only be as immature as a 18 year old, instead of a 12 year old.
...But.....Flagged for not being in here yesterday! (our new meme) =3
Morning, @Iain. It pleases me that the general assumption of your prolonged absence was ill-founded.
man my feet smell
or rather, my shoes
Ok, this is starting to piss me off. I've been getting several calls per day from the 800 number associated with CA. They'll leave empty voicemails, and then call back about 30 minutes later.
I'm getting really tired of ignoring the ringing.
@ScottPack Write a dialplan rule to quietly /dev/null them
@TomOConnor My phone has a button that mutes the ringer. I just don't know which one it is!
13:16
@ScottPack PRESS ALL THE BUTTONS
I think I put someone on speaker yesterday when I meant to do hold. :(
sure are a lot of nginx questions
@ScottPack DND buttons <3
seems like all people ask about are nginx, LAMP, and load balancers
@ScottPack Did you proceed to curse them out?
13:25
didnt we have some nginx gurus tracking that tag? I know we atleast have the haproxy author lurking here
@TylerShads No, I was just going to the other room to look in the key safe. Still, a bit embarrassing.
@ScottPack Sounds like you have plenty of opportunities to figure it out
@ScottPack Mine says "Ignore".. but thats Avaya
13:42
@pauska Ericsson's aren't that obvious.
I have an NEC. I'm pretty sure it just does whatever it wants.
So, the only way to get an .msi of adobe reader is by signing up for a liscense? Thats stupid.
@TylerShads Or just going to the link
@MDMarra I guess I'm retarded in the morning, I should just have off on Fridays -.-
All they do when you sign up for a license is send you a link that isn't on their main site anywhere
it's posted all over appdeploy and other places
You really should probably just sign up for the license though. It takes two minutes and is free
13:48
Hm. Both of you guys still have your old name on my screen. I'm finding their lack of cache updates disturbing.
@ScottPack refresh chat, you freak
@ScottPack Mine shows up as well as Mark's
No. It should Just Work.
Hmm. trying out a new monitor configuration on the desk here.... It's pretty ridiculous.
The names won't update if you don't refresh
13:49
Just like snowmen on IE9?
Is all quiet on the front today?
@PeterGrace Pics
In other news. How awesome is this?
@PeterGrace Is there less than 4 monitors?
@ChrisS syneticdj or whatever his name is hasn't popped in
but I'm sure he will
13:50
@ChrisS We're waiting for the nuke
@TylerShads 2 30"ers and a middle widescreen in portrait
I shall take a pic
@PeterGrace This is how big boys roll
Guess I should know better than to roll with the bad boys
The one in the middle is just downright adorable
That's weird
13:52
Yeah, I dont know the StackExchange fascination with the portrait mode screens
^My desk
everyone has 'em
@PeterGrace That middle one is disturbing...
@PeterGrace What's the size on that middle one?
Well, I'm trying to figure out how I might make use of this portrait monitor
13:53
It barely looks like a monitor
I use mine for chat
And other assorted non-email communication
My landscape monitor is for work, my portrait one if for communication
I'm wondering if having the start menu on the middle screen will be a good idea
I am probably going to remove the portrait one and just roll with the 2 30's
Yeah thats weird to me
But I also don't have three monitors
This laptop in the advanced docking station can power 5 monitors simultaneously
They told me I could spend up to 2k for a laptop, I settled on the monstrous hp elitebook 8560w
which I only later found out is really only supposed to be for people who do autocad presentations on the road :P
Thing is ridonkulusly overpowered.
At least it's not huge. 15.6" is about as large as I could ever possibly go on a laptop.
My wife has a 17" that, really, is just a desktop that she can take to the other room if need be.
13:56
Just barely squeaks into the timbuk2 bags we have at the company
@MDMarra I have 4 :)
YES!!!!
1,001 rep baby
(powered by three laptops)
15 days early
I had four at one point, but I had trouble finding a reason for the last one.
For a while I kept Spectrum running on it all the time, but the resolution was too low for the damn thing to be readable.
13:58
@PeterGrace Downvotes incoming
@TylerShads lest you forget, good sir, that I have database admin.
@PeterGrace 999 where I see it :)
@PeterGrace So...you can give me 10k rep =D
lol.
extortion!
@PeterGrace We're using 8560p right now..
13:59
hahaha you assholes
