01:47
@MichaelHampton looks like no by default
There seem to be instructions to compile it yourself tho

1 hour later…
03:06
Any windows people around?
@mossy I am but i'm not very good
@MarkHenderson Having a problem with alt tabbing applications. applications will randomly stick to the foreground and cycled windows appear behind, even if focused. Reallllly annoying.
Google isn't helping.
@mossy Random applications, or a particular application randomly?
Full screen apps specifically, sorry.
I thought that it was bugging out with games specifically, but it happens with Chrome, etc.
persists through OS reloads.
That is pretty weird
I havent had that specific problem
03:13
I have a feeling that it's high system load, and something to do with umm
what's the window shit that Windows 7 has
aero
you can probably turn it off and see if it makes a difference
well i did. lol.
still happened.
I've never encountered that tho
Where do errors of that level log to
because i dont see shit.
usually event viewer
Probably worth a SU question in my opinion ;p
03:16
sigh. yeah

1 hour later…
05:11
good morning aliens
05:36
@ShaneMadden You play kerbal space program right? Can't remember.
05:56
@mossy Yup!
Not very well, mind you.
Kinda stuck on getting out to the outer planets consistently
morning
G'day ?
I don't like Mondays
@JennyD Just as well it's thursday then
@MarkHenderson Thursdays are the worst kind of Mondays
5
06:19
every workday is the worst kind of Monday
@MichelZ I dunno, I get some deep satisfaction out of my work
(sometimes)
Today I feel like the king of devops because I fucking upped my javascript skills building some devopsy tools
@MarkHenderson you're a horrible person!
@MichelZ Devops as in I am an ops who works with devs to get shit done
Not a dev who dabbles in ops
:)
better then.
06:32
@MichelZ s/work//
@MarkHenderson right, I prefer the term "opsdev" since it's not yet been totally coopted as a buzzword
06:47
morning
@JennyD You do not seem to be in a good place if even your weekends are like mondays :)
07:12
@MichelZ they're not like Mondays, they are just a different kind of Mondays
although the fact that Sims 2 was just re-released for Macs did make last weekend better :-)
@JennyD How's the riding going ?
@Iain Now that the weather is back below 30C/85F it's going well
How's it going for you?
@JennyD I've only ridden twice in the last couple of months. Took a break and didn't get back to it. Now I'm back I'm really enjoying it again
07:39
ffs, riverbed renamed their load balancer solution again. SteelApp aka Stingray aka ZTM aka ZXTM
Dan
Dan
07:49
morning morning
good morning
@faker dafuq.
@faker Do they have a really bad reputation they're trying to run away from?
@JennyD they bought the product and immediately renamed it to Stingray
now they probably figured out that if you search for "stingray" you find mostly animals and not cool load balancers :D
@faker Given the company name I'd've gone with "delta" - a way for a river to take multiple channels so that the water always reaches the sea
08:22
@ShaneMadden Yeah I'm bad. I spent an hour trying to figure out why parts were horizontal by default... come to find out i was building a rocket in the air hanger thing.
And now it's 4:30am.
Bob
Bob
@mossy Spaceplane!
ow that was loud.
I'm up

2 hours later…
10:02
morning
aha! The guy who always uses my e-mail address signed up at a service which asked him for a password and e-mailed it back in plaintext
and he uses a terrible password too. It contains his lastname and year of birth (I guess?)
so now find out if you are actually the owner of the account when he uses your email.
if so go ahead and change stuff :)

Q: Corliss Expert Group Home Security: How to Secure Your Home without Spending Too Much?

Mika EsmondHOME SECURITY: HOW TO SECURE YOUR HOME WITHOUT SPENDING TOO MUCH Imagine if there were no burglar or criminals who threaten the safety of our homes; we will be surprised how much savings we would have on several things we do to secure ourselves and our loved ones. We would not need fences, gates...

flag spam
@DennisNolte well, I never click on the "confirm you e-mail address" links
but many sites also don't care if you don't
not even the big ones like Facebook and Microsoft. They keep on sending me crap although I never verified the address
My husband's brother used to own "dybedahl.se" but he let it lapse 3 years ago. I registered it a few months back - and am now getting stuff on a mailinglist that my SiL signed up for. Which has been bouncing for about 3 years
10:15
@faker you can get money for that :)
you should inform them that you never registered that account and then order them to stop (unterlassungserklärung) , if they still send you mail, sue them and let them pay you a fine for it.
@DennisNolte I got a xbox gold membership because he bought it with my e-mail address. I think it's expired now
lovely.
@DennisNolte good fucking luck with that
I tried to get out of the Microsoft spam
@faker afaik there was someone who won something like that.
oh you have a service request? No problem, just login first.
10:18
send it to abuse, or their legal team, they will respond.
the effort it takes is too much. I just move them into a "not-me" folder and move on now
nope, they didn't
@faker well plain old letter by mail?
sadly i never got something like that :(
the security team told me: "it's simple, just click the forgot password link, reset it, login and request the account to be deleted"
ye right, not your responsibility..
they need to be certain the mail is owned by the one registering
at least in .de
I replied that they now have instructed me to take over another customers account. Which is very possibly illegal for me to do. They never responded back
10:20
@faker yep, true :)
i think that was the case i was refering to.
if I was bored I'd sue them. But it's too much effort
usually when i sue someone it takes a few hours to get the paperwork done, meet with a lawyer , and wait a few years.. then there might be some more hours involved..
personally i see suing someone as time investment in the future.
and i hate guys who think they are above the law and can behave like they want.
same for gov or coorps..
fuck all of them..
10:39
@DennisNolte "usually"? You sue people a lot?
i would not say a lot, but there are enough situations.
as i did hate to pay a lawyer for that i got insurance :)
possible next step (not decided yet) is some law courses myself..
i find the lack of skill in certain law fields , especially with IT, disturbing.
it takes me more to explain the lawyer what he should do and why, getting the correct sentence etc than to just do it myself. sadly noone cares about a private letter.
I think we're on either side of a cultural chasm here
Dan
Dan
Indeed, I don't think I know anyone who has actually sued someone unless you count small claims for contract breaches and the like
@Dan well, in .de there is not the similiar think to small claim, but there are courts where you do not need a lawyer for.
most of the stuff i did/do is most likely small claim though.
Dan
Dan
@DennisNolte What kind of things are you suing for?
10:44
IP, data breaches, insults, small stuff when someone is pissing you off and you cannot just punch him in the face.
Dan
Dan
You're gonna have to give me some examples of the latter two
hehe
examples: tailgate on interstate, or cutting in to reach the exit.
comment flaming when someone threads to kill you f.e.

the ladder came from some small shooter game i played a few years ago, where the community was very insulting once they knew your german.
it did get less (the suing) during the last years, cause as you said, it takes much time and i rather use it with wife.
while i do get that a lot of people breach at least some of the laws accidently (IP law f.e. ) on traffic there is no excuse.. and i hate to be in a situation where i can die because of some shithead ignoring common "street" laws.
@JennyD why do you think that?
Suing other people should be reserved as a last resort of justice. I'm not arguing whether you're in the right or not, but suing people as a "future investment" is an act of selfish frivolity if you ask me
11:01
@MathiasR.Jessen there is no justice in this world anymore. While i do agree that it might be selfish i would not think it is a frivolity. i gave up in having an impact on the world, so fuck them, if they can game the system, ruin my life with their decisions i could not care less about them.
Justice is an ideal to pursue, not a given.On the other hand, law can be both the way the powerful people perpetuate their power and the only tool for the powerless to use their rights. In between, there's always people that find a way to game the system.
Wasting time, money and effort on pursuing legal back-and-forth towing inherently works against building sustainability in a world filled with inequality. Each minute any legal professional pours away on a lawsuit over something as indifferent as an insult, is another minute not spent on something viable or meaningful. By suing people when you would have been just as fine off not suing someone, you do have an impact on the world. You're making it slightly shittier.
while i do agree with the overall points i think you make i think this is not as easy as it seems . where do you draw the line of what is meaningful and what isn't? is the happiness of one person significantly more important than another?
We could start now with freedom of speech vs religion but i guess we can end here.
so lets get back to flaming fuckin web configuration pages loaded with JS, taking 20+ seconds to respond, and have no fucking option for batch processing..
usually when someone annoys me, I just decide they're not wasting time, effort or emotional energy on. or family.
;p
so what do you do to relieve stress build during work, commuting, or just reading?
am i that far off that it is better to not use violence for that?
And at least for me the sports i do build up more "hate" than relieving..
11:15
@DennisNolte: virtual violence
or I just go elbow deep in a system
@DennisNolte Let's say person X attacks you in an online discussion, below-the-belt, with nasty insults that aims to demean your persona. Why in the world would you bother formally retaliating against somebody who's already been wasting your time. Does it make you happier wasting even more time on this asswipe?
@MathiasR.Jessen how would i know if this is a "serious" thread or just some kid flaming? i would need to waste more time anyway.
obvious xkcd:
@DennisNolte Threats to you life is a criminal offense in DE (Deutsche Strafgesetzbuch § 241), file a complaint with the police and let them deal with it
Flaming and rambling not containing death threats > /dev/null plz
i know, but it is not that easy. while not personally a friend of mine had to deal with this IRL.
he got a thread to his life, called the cops, they did find the names of the offender, but there is some group of people suggesting you to withdraw the notice to the police.
Dan
Dan
@DennisNolte You've sued someone for flaming you on the internet.....?
11:21
@Dan and we make jokes about the US being sue-happy...
@Dan well, i was not that old .
@DennisNolte People being factually wrong out of ignorance on the other hand ... that'll have me stay up all night as well though ;-)
@tombull89 it is just me, and some 50+years guys who constantly fight with the neigbors
Dan
Dan
@DennisNolte Old enough to sue.....no offence, but this is ranking up there with one of the more pathetic things I've heard
@Dan careful, I'll sue you.
11:22
@Dan when they call your family, thread them too, you will think otherwise.
@DennisNolte I'm pretty sure witness coercion is a criminal offense too, file complaint no. 2 ;)
I'd call the police, let them deal with it...
Dan
Dan
@DennisNolte I just, and i'm trying not to victimblame here, can't fathom how you're getting yourself into these situations
I mean, I'm an internet veteran and have had a lot of arguments and some have spilled into real life. But I've never felt that I've had to sue someone
@Dan provoking helps a lot :)
Dan
Dan
@DennisNolte Were you successful in all of these endeavours and what do you gain? Monetary compensation?
11:25
@Dan sucessfull, sometimes, money compensation not worth talking about. Seeing the face of them loosing, priceless. But more often than that i was just "random" damages to house/care etc.
Every day is like monday
which usually the police did not care about and the insurance does not pay all the time.
Dan
Dan
@RobM I'm not complaining too much because I do have other stuff to do, but I've spent all morning trying to get on to do some work that has now been canned because th esystem is fucked. So no paid work for me today
@dan that does suck :-(
Dan
Dan
@DennisNolte I should add, I do support people fighting for justice and I'm definitely not someone who suffers from the bystander effect - I'm just struggling to think of any time I could have realistically sued someone
11:29
its the question what you sue for, if you (bad example) have lots of contact with religios people it is pretty easy to think they force their religion onto you:
think about the christ symbol in churches, the clothes, church bells etc.
there a at least a 100 "valid" reasons i could sue, where i do not because i know there is no point, and i won't win, because of believes which are just plain shit.
not judging religion here, dont get me wrong, but do not make noises..
similiar: the air polution, why is it accepted that i have thousands of people arround me in cars polluting the air arround me without me having a benefit of "them" driving arround for personal gain.
Dan
Dan
@DennisNolte If you won't win, how on Earth can it be classed as a valid reason?
@Dan valid != legal.
Dan
Dan
@DennisNolte Uhm, no - surely they're synonyms here
ok let me rephrase it then.
Dan
Dan
How can you have a "valid" reason to sue that isn't a "legal" reason, and vice versa?
11:33
@DennisNolte surely you accept that when you live in a city?
To be honest, I've got bigger things to worry about than that.
@tombull89 no offence, but you could say the same to unequal woman/man handling, or crimes for that matter.
@tombull89 and yes i can theoretically change a lot of those myself, moving outside etc.
thats not what i was trying to point at
i was trying to point at the possibilities (now/10years/whatever) that there is no need for the current traffic system to be so ineffectiv, noisy, and polluting
Dan
Dan
@DennisNolte But....who are you suing?
I'm sorry, maybe there's a language barrier thing here, I just don't "get" this conversation at all to be honest
Basically, if you think you can sue and win, go ahead.
@Dan let me sum it up: i am sad that people behave the way they do without understanding the impact on others, be it health or mentally.
@tombull89 no point in suing if you loose.
Dan
Dan
@DennisNolte Yeah, but me driving my car isn't an offence - so whatever you think of it, you can't sue me
Or rather, you can sue me in the sense you can sue anyone for anything, but it's going to get tossed out very quickly
11:39
it is usually not meant as an insult ofc.
(hint: did you see some truck drivers modify their carbon cars with large black smoke output?)
However, if your decision to drive has an impact on me, should there not be at least some sort of discussion held over which rights should be "reduced"?
any mods around? serverfault.com/users/238681/tony-ohare this dude is a spammer and about as legit as a 3 and a half dollar bill.
Dan
Dan
@DennisNolte So you think the answer to this is frivolous lawsuits?
Dan
Dan
@DennisNolte So how are you bring a lawsuit against someone for pollution any other way?
@Dan i can't. maybe we misunderstood us there.
@Dan people accept "reducing" of personal rights in ways which are strange for me to understand. And as a minority i most of the time am unable to change this situation.
to close the "discussion circle" back to IT "stuff":
think of privacy, all the cameras on public ground, closed source government work etc.
11:59
@DennisNolte Because I don't know anybody in this country who would think it's perfectly reasonable to sue someone for insults or small stuff
Dan
Dan
LiveLeak have decided to ban any future IS beheadings - interesting move
@MichaelHampton: Yeah, Nuke him please, he's a spammer
LiveLeak did surprise me with what it's hosted in the past.
Still, it'll end up on the deep web, etc.
Thats odd
renuked
@JourneymanGeek I did already!
12:25
@MichaelHampton: I did so too! This is the second time I deleted that account
which is odd
@JourneymanGeek He made two accounts
quite a determined little spammer then
Does anyone have a better answer to "How do I get a ton of SNMP data into graphite" than "set up Cacti and feed the RRD into graphite"?
And no, the answer is not collectd, unless you know about some auto-config-building tool that I don't.
13:16
oh man. We just redeployed one of our webservers. Checking monitoring afterwards I noticed it got a extra 2TB data partition.
Turns out there still was a external USB HDD connected to it from migrating datacenters.
heh
this login is taking suspiciously long...

Dan
13:32
Fuck I hate paperwor
My next career move should be either architectural design or pre-sales etc, but man, I dunno
13:52
sup pee-pole?
@Dan It's allllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll paperwork
Dan
Dan
@MDMarra I know, right - I'm kind of embarrassed at how much I've been paid to deliver so little
I just finished 40 pages on SCSM and SCO
:-|
Dan
Dan
Hah, yep - I'm just finishing up 30 pages on Citrix
And honestly, it's killing me - I feel like a kid doing homework
haha
Dan
Dan
I could've had it finished hours ago if I'd not been interrupted by Buzzfeed, YouTube and anything else I can find
13:56
I've made templates for the most common ones we do. So now, the next time I need to do an AD migration, for example, 20 of the 30 pages are written and generalized in a find/replace friendly way
Dan
Dan
Ah, that's not too bad - this is a review so fairly specific
Common sections, but it's nearly all unique
ah, yeah we do "health checks"
sounds similar
I'm playing with setting up SCCM (in a lab) but is there any full documentation? There's bits like opening ports in Windows firewall for SQL server, but nothing that covers everything. Or am I looking in the wrong places? YouTube videos doesn't really cover everything...
System Center Documentation Library ^
It's got everything
@MDMarra I did find that, but there's no Configuration Manager sub-section, which why it confused me a bit.
14:01
sure there is
Dan
Dan
@MDMarra Yeah, one in the same - dull as fuc
Sup
@MDMarra yeah, I got nothing. I swear the page looked different (with no link to CM) when I first loaded it.
I'm on a plane
To PA
I'm on a boat
wait, no I'm not. I'm on a chair.

Oh fucking hell - all of my Word headers are right aligned for some reason now. What the hell did I do
#notinthefuckingmood
@kce Sorry. :/
kce
kce
@ScottPack I appreciate your honesty. I have mentioned this before but I sort of feel like I exist in a vacuum up here and I don't really have a good sense of what is or is not appropriate. It's always nice to get some perspective from SF.
@cole where to?
and for how long?
@tombull89 better than being in a box
14:27
Excuse me, am I in the right place for live support?
@AaronCopley Have you tried turning it off and on again?
4
Dan
Dan
Sure are, let me get you my Paypal address ;)
Have you tried re-jigging the flux capacitor?
Have you tried running it on TomTom's phone?
How is every one? Haven't been in here for a while.
@tombull89 Where's the 'any' key?
14:39
photoshopped!
@tombull89 This needs to be a real thing you can buy and sneak onto people's desks.
5 weeks later; uncontrollable laughter.
@MDMarra Pittsburgh till tomorrow
Literally going to be there for 24hrs
14:55
ah
bummer
if it were Philly, I'd buy you a beer and we'd have some ribs
How about that...

@Bob lol, nice!

After running Ubuntu for about two years now, I have a laundry list of complaints. Whether Ubuntu is automagically starting daemons that I install, or the relative difficulty of running an internal repo, or (and I'm heartily agreeing with my coworker Nick here) that it doesn't actually include a firewall out of the box....there are […]

Is there a SF chat room where you can ask a basic question that's not worthy of a thread?
Who the fuck is still using Ubuntu?!
2
@CopyRunStart You can ask a basic question here, but only if you aren't actually expecting an answer. :)
I still use Ubuntu for my Motion server =X
wtf is a motion server?
It's like ZoneMinder but better IMO
security cam motion detection/recording software
Dan
Dan
16:02
I guess I should begint o go through this stack of expenses
I need to start paying a book keeper
@CopyRunStart Now I'm curious. What's this basic question?
16:23
mornin' gents.
@MichaelHampton We still have solaris 9 kicking around on a couple of machines.
@MattSimmons Yeah, but that's at least pre-Oracle.
Ubuntu is just a gawd-awful mess.
are in this state where someone decided, around Ubuntu 6, that we should use Ubuntu
It was apparently during the switchover from Oracle. Now, three linux admins later, still ubuntu.
No one likes it. The new admin is likely to fix it.
At least, that's what I tell myself to sleep at night
16:26
The switch was late in S10 wasn't it ?
Tell me you don't actually have Ubuntu 6 kicking around.
I don't
:)
@MichaelHampton I won't tell you that.
OTOH, I don't know for sure.
@MattSimmons And 8 year old version of Ubuntu? That's frightening.
Well, if you're thinking about deploying 14.04, think again and consider something else.
16:29
lol
I'm not the linux guy. I'm working with him to get things over to CentOs
CentOS 7 is really nice. Really, really nice. I just brought up a new puppet master on it yesterday.
And last week I told a developer straight out that if they want the latest Docker they need to dump Ubuntu and use Fedora.
@MichaelHampton Was totally ready to call bullshit on that, but that article pretty much nails it cold.
OK, so this is maybe the saddest thing so far
Here's the machine count from our internal Source of Truthiness(tm)

  1 10.04.1
  1 10.04.3
  5 10.10

  1 14.04LTS
  3 6.06
 31 8.04
 12 8.10
 22 9.04
 37 9.10
Last place that I was responsible for Linux desktops, they were still running 9.10 on LTSP until late last year.
@MattSimmons 6.06, yikes
16:38
haha
yeah
and actually, only one of those is really in use. The SoT hasn't been updated yet.
@MattSimmons I haven't seen a 6.06 machine in 7 years...
msimmons@OLDHOST:~$ cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu 6.06.2 LTS \n \l
If there's ever a computer virus that wipes out all Linux kernals after 2.6.15, let me know.
In any event.
It needs to go away

Q: Constant prompts for credentials from one Mac Outlook 2011 client

Top__HatThe majority of my Exchange users are all on Windows 7 and have no issues (at least using Outlook...) but a subset of the executives are ardent Mac users running Outlook 2011 for OS X. @DennisKaarsemaker mornin'. I see you still have a position listed in Bellevue. You still looking for CV's for that one?
Now that my wedding & honeymoon/vacation is done, I can focus finally.
@Magellan yeah
@DennisKaarsemaker Cool. I'll get my resume' updated and off to you soon.
2 open positions, so statistically about 500 resumes to go through
@DennisKaarsemaker I'm impressed. that's pretty good response. It's taken my current place most of a year to fill 3 positions on my team.
17:02
oh, we haven't received all those cv's yet
it's just that CV to hire rate is about 0.4%, so statistically, we'll need to get through 500 cv's, a few dozen phone interviews and a dozen or so face-to-faces
(If I remember all the other success rates correctly)
Ah, I forget about the CV thing that everyone else but the US does. I'd have to build one of those up. Nobody here wants to look at a 4-page CV listing. Surest way to get tossed in the trash.
cv and resume are synonyms here
brb, the twins are screaming....
17:43
And while we're complaining about snmp, whose bright idea was it to have com2sec for IPv4 and com2sec6 for IPv6?
17:54
That moment when I have to upload a 2 GB SQL backup to a file host...
waits
18:21
these are pretty excellent even if they're windows only
interesting sniffing the control frames and seeing what's going on
Why does SORBS want my home phone number just so I can get a mail system off a black list?
Because real spammers don't have home phones?
@MichaelHampton They do, they just steal borrow a random one!
I don't even use SORBS anymore
18:38
@MichaelHampton I don't use SORBS, it's used against me. -_-
@84104 I mean, I stopped using SORBS in my mail servers because it's almost impossible to get off of, thus its quality is unlikely to be very high.
So yeah, I see where you're at
We are in agreement.
And I thought installing NT4 from floppies was going to be the worst thing to happen to me this week.
You could convince your correspondent that SORBS is a giant steaming pile of crap that they shouldn't be using. It might be easier than getting delisted.
That may be faster than being delisted.
That too.
18:45
evening all :)
Apparently I'm not the only one who thinks so. Hit suckstest.com (disclaimer: I own this site) and put in "SORBS"
@MichaelHampton I typed "Comcast" and got About 4,880,000 results (0.50 seconds)
lol
@NathanC Sounds about right.
i did "Apple", i got 175,000,000 results (0.38 seconds)
lol
beat that comcast
41% into a 2 GB upload...I feel like it should be going much faster than that.
18:52
@ColdT Apple probably isn't worse than comcast. I suspect that might be holy war fallout.
19:29
anyone use gitter? Looks interesting.
@RyJones ooh, that sounds useful
quick and easy support chats
I dig the github integration
yeah, though I'm a bit weary it needs write access
19:45
they just sent out an email to tell us they'll be announcing pricing soon. thanks!
I added you to a chat

Laziness prevails sometimes...I didn't want to look through a folder of thousands of files to ensure there were pairs (say, *.xml and a *.dat output file to go with it) with the same filename, so I wrote a quick c# app to find them for me
@NathanC I've tried to get out of that habit and use powershell instead...meh, don't like it. Syntax dumb
(that is to say, I'm not familiar with it, therefore it's bad)
19:55
@TomW Yeah, PS would've probably done it for me as a one-liner, but I don't know it...
Yay for Directory.EnumerateFiles!

os.listdir()

Fuck Windows 8

You can't get into Safe Mode unless you trigger a reboot from inside Windows itself
