@cole not much. Finishing up my last week at twerk
@mossy Where are you going?
@MathiasR.Jessen Going to do some Point of sale stuff for a month, then start at Rackspace.
@mossy does the POS place know about Rackspace?
13:20
Yeah.
oh well then sweet
I didn't want to hide it from the guy.
I'm a little nervous about rackspace though.
@MarkHenderson Yeah, I hate job searches enough that one of my acceptance considerations is whether or not I could see myself at that company for 10 years. Even if I don't make it that long I want to be able to.
@mossy why?
@mossy Cool, any particular position? :-)
13:24
@cole They made it sound like they're going to push RHCE training when i get there.
I don't know if i'm that smart.
@MarkHenderson For me it's more of an overhead concern. For a proper FTE (as opposed to contractor) I typically assume 6-9 months before we can start getting full value out of the hire. Makes it hard to justify the time involved in hiring if I'll only get 1-1.5 years out of somebody. Especially when I was with the Uni where a hiring cycle might be minimum 2-3 months.
@MathiasR.Jessen "Managed Cloud Team" from the sounds of it. Linux admin position.
@mossy I believe in you
@cole Thanks. I'll be sure to let you guys know if i fuck something up and get fired within the first month.
@mossy Nice. Don't overthink whether you're "smart enough" for a RHCE, look at it the other way around: Rackspace needs a certified engineer and are willing to put time and resources into educating you to be that guy
13:26
@MathiasR.Jessen Yeah I know. I'm a negative little bitch though.
If you found Server Fault and we haven't run you out of town with pitchforks, you're smart enough to get an RHCE.
7
Found my new apartment.
@MathiasR.Jessen The nice thing about rackspace is that they provide all of that training on site. Redhat, cisco, etc.
You attend training on normal work hours.
that's good.
Jesus, apparently i need a job at Rackspace
Far too many places seem to think you can do it on top of everything else and I don't think that's reasonable.
Going to try and get CCNA and CCNP in my own time though myself, but that's my own choice, not my employer's
13:33
@mossy While that is nice, in terms of "ease of access", I rather like having to go off-site for training. That sends a clear signal that I'm "off-limits" and preoccupied with something else than my coworkers petty problems
@RobM After four years of asking the school has agreed to pay for my CCNA.
Thing is, I'm not sure if there's any real point and I'd probably be better off doing something like a SCCM course instead.
after figuring out the I/O solution I also found a SF question about it: serverfault.com/questions/361032/…
still don't understand why our CentOS 5 servers didn't behave like this, but eh ¯\(°_o)/¯
@tombull89 They should pay for both, eh?
13:59
@MathiasR.Jessen yeah, true. I won't complain though. I love free stuff.

Going to hell for laughing, but I can't help it
@NathanC You're in the Comms Room - if Hell is real, we'll all have a beer in it

this ice bucket challenge reminds me of the beer challenge a lot of my facebook friends were doing 6 months ago
same concept, you had to chug a beer down and then nominate 3 people to do the same. If you don't do it, you had to buy them a create of beer
I find both challenges equally weird....
@faker Well, to the ice bucket challenge's credit, it's gone viral enough to raise millions for ALS research
which is the whole point of it, so I can see it doing some good :)
@NathanC yes, true. At least something good comes out of it

Q: GMail detecting mail as spam, solver gets a beer

Petru ToaderI've been trying for a long time to get our company's mail server send mail that will get accepted by the GMail spam filter. So, I keep thinking it's my wireless adapter on my desktop at home causing my latency woes
Which is strange since pings to the router are fine...but, when I did a ping test from my phone (yay terminal emulator), times were normal at the same time I was running the desktop test.

Can I get an assist for an approved edit?
That is, can anyone push that through as approved. :)

@NathanC there's another one along those lines "You think some of the IBC's were bad, leonardo dicaprio died doing his"

Heh. I think I still have a WDNA3100 around somewhere from before I managed to get dual band on the internal chip (laptop).

@NathanC heeeeh
I was looking at deploying printers with group policy preferences today. I died a little bit more inside.
@tombull89 I did that once. It was awful.
It would have been nice if it was working by the time I left...but noooooooooo.
I love GPP for printers.
Well, use of Ubuntu is not generally recommended either. :) — Michael Hampton ♦ 16 secs ago
Granted we've 450+ printers and 100+ GPOs for deploying them.
15:57
We're got around 60 printers
I was thinking of having one policy per printer and then using the targeting to say which machines should have them...not sure if that's the right way to do it.
I can't look at the GPO for our sister site because they have ONE print queue.

Is there a reliable way to re-format a "get-" command into a "new-' command? I have piles of Exchange settings that I need to apply to a new Exchange environment
Example - New-ManagedContentSettings
pipeline it? I'm not sure what you're asking
16:37
There are lots of fiddly details when running get-managedcontentsettings. I can certainly use a text editor to manually copy-and-paste, but in some cases I have to insert quotes, etc
These are on different servers, different domains
I dunno, write a script with all of your parameters as variables?
I'm sure you've thought of that, just not sure what you're trying to get at
@MDMarra Sounds like I
Get-Help about_Splatting might help if I'm understanding what you want to do.
I'd have to define every parameter?
Basically, gather all the names/values from the Get- in to hashes, then splat them into the New-.
The parameter list could be defined on the fly from the return of the Get-.
@jscott Perhaps I spent too much time in Perl; PoSH bends my brain
[PS] C:\Windows\system32>$HashArguments = @{Get-ManagedContentSettings}
Missing '=' operator after key in hash literal.
This error is so irritating
and it's only one server that's popping that error as far as I'm aware.
@NathanC Then make sure that the server presents a trusted certificate ;)
@MathiasR.Jessen that's my guess, busted or missing cert perhaps
either the remote computer's cert or the remote computer doesn't trust the domain's root ca
@MathiasR.Jessen Well, none of the servers do as far as I'm aware...I do have a CA set up though.
And it's trusted
17:02
Might be a missing SPN ... Kerberos wouldn't have a problem sending saved credentials as only the trusted target computer would be able to decode it

I wonder if I can retire when I'm 35. How low would my living standards need to be to make that happen.
From what I gather on there, you need to plan for it from like 18 years old to retire self-sufficiently around 40

Python and Perl

@cole If you really want to be confused, try C
:p
@NathanC I'm already confused
I ask you to follow "learn python the hard way", and follow his rules.
Something like C# would be a good start though. .Net libraries do practically half the work for you
@RyJones tried that
even bought the book
Like...I needed to FTP stuff to a remote server. There's a library for that.
lol
@cole did you take advantage of his office hours?
he literally tells you exactly what to type.
It's also hard I have no projects to apply Python to
@RyJones I can't even that website
18:15
The only reason I can do anything in PowerShell is because I actually have had projects to do.
No, you've just applied no Python to your projects.
you choose helplessness in the face of knowledge.
@jscott no sense of doing Python on Windows that PowerShell will do native?
You can mangle your Active Directory just as quickly using Python as Powershell. :)

@TomW I'm not a regular user or administrator of *nix systems, but if I have to choose a general purpose linux distro, be it for server or client, I'd pick Debian
I'm a Windozer
Did that make sense ? :P
@kce did the error actually say "Cryptogrpahic Services"?
yeah, just wondering what use they have for you, if that's not rude
sticking up for the non-expert user?
Well, in that regard, I am a non-expert user :) I run a number of websites off apache httpd and nginx on Debian, for various purposes, but mainly for "staying sharp" by exposing myself to challenges outside IIS, which is my Web Server of Choice in any professional setting :)

Why is it so hard to find a webcam where the software supports a vertical flip?
