Q: Change account profile photo on network account

Mark HendersonWe have recently joined three iMacs to our Active Directory domain. I would like to set the account profile photo, however this seems to be disabled for network accounts (I can set it for local accounts). Is there any way to set the profile photo for network accounts?

(probably shouldn't have called you macfags and then asked for help)
Also this is mission critical, priority 1, business impacted issue so your prompt attention is kindly appreciated
@MarkHenderson setting the jpegPhoto attribute in AD ldap?
@DennisKaarsemaker Worth a shot
(note that I don't use AD or macs, so any chance of this working is about the same as pure luck)
@MarkHenderson starred for the use of "Macfags"
@strugee We're getting into some app development so I bought a mac mini for some xcode work. My boss was so enamoured by the mac mini that we all got top-line iMacs
Throw some vmware fusion on there and let's cross our fingers and hope for the best
Doing a vmware converter to get everyones current PCs into VMWare Fusion. I've done mine, seems to work well.
00:59
@MarkHenderson nailed it
@MarkHenderson Isn't that trivial using your standard run of the mill enterprise management suite for Macs?
01:23
@ScottPack You mean Active Directory?
I dunno this is my first domain-joined mac
@MarkHenderson Nah, I was being smarmy because there isn't one.
Wasn't even prepared, boss just came in with a boot load of iMacs and said "enjoy"
I haven't worked with domain joined Macs since 10.8 but I never was able to convince myself it was worth it.

Should I be worried that the IE 11 installer disabled Windows Security Essentials?
It seems counter-intuitive.
Let's upgrade IE! I know let's disable the first line of defence against malware!
@MarkHenderson Seems odd when you all are worried about the bottom line...
04:39
@MarkHenderson The obvious answer is that Internet Exploder is actually malware.

@FalconMomot the site doesn't have a robots.txt, not my problem. — Aarushi Ign 46 mins ago
that asshole is yet another guy using EC2 to get multiple IPs to bypass rate limiting and dump someone else's data.
07:09
yeah.. :(
07:21
oh crap, our redis servers hit the connection limit -- which wasn't even monitored
07:42
The EC2 API request limit is another fun one
07:56
@MattBear ouch. OUCH.
Yes, if you want to be a recalcitrant malfeasor and justify it that way, go right ahead I suppose. Booooo. — Falcon Momot 1 hour ago
No no, You need to call him an unrepentant miscreant, involved in much nefarious activities.
@FalconMomot can you stop abusing man? — Aarushi Ign 1 hour ago
08:04
just stop abusing man generally?
(is malfeasor even a word?)
looks like it
recalcitrant malfeasor - that's a hell of a phrase
It sounds suitably victorian

Morning
@JourneymanGeek yup!
hmm, my first attempt at making flatbread is only a moderate success.
it's thin as to be translucent, and way too salty.
08:12
@FalconMomot what kind of flatbread ?
I didn't know there were kinds
unleavened and thin?
I should probably make it with a little less water, and roll it
way too much lemon thyme also
aah well, better flatbread next time.
Pita ?
what I came up with is more like a water cracker without the air
but the pita recipe I have uses yeast so it's leven
yeah I'm trying to make it unleavened
hmm, I basically made matzah
08:19
@FalconMomot: google.com.sg/…
@JourneymanGeek yeah, but even thinner
herbed though, so it's more chapati than matzah.

Can I ask a really dumb question? I've got someone pointing out that their app is reporting 'really high split I/O' and that I should reformat my disks/defragment.
Only... the disks in question are being accessed via CIFS from a NetApp. So I -think- their app is just talking nonsense.
@Sobrique Well, the first half of what it says may well be correct, but their suggested solution obviously assumes you're using local disk
Dan
Dan
@JennyD Haha, that's wonderful.
Yeah, I'm trying to decide if I should be shouting 'duuuuh' at them, or ... actually trying to figure out what it means in a 'network attached storage' context.
This is a wild guess, I'm not really a storage admin, but it seems likely that read/write times may not be quite consistent when you're using networked storage, due to e.g. network congestion or other disk usage. And on a local disk, that might also be caused by bad blocks/fragmentation.

So if the application notices that there's a variation in I/O times, it'll assume that it's the latter. Which IMO is a crap assumption.
I like that one. Reminds me of my personal favourite - the '500 mile email': csua.berkeley.edu/~ranga/humor/500_mile_email.txt
Yes, I'd sort of assumed 'their app is crap' - in no small part because it doesn't say why it's bombing out, it just 'has an error'.
I've got some identical - replicated - storage on two NetApps. One of which works fine, the other crashes out after about half an hour. No idea why.
10:49
@Sobrique That's a reasonable conclusion... even if you were using a local disk, you could get the exact same symptoms e.g. by running something else that's also I/O heavy at the same time.

Early flight. Lots of sysadmin discussions on lopsa and linkedin. I may ask a question on main that reflects my thoughts about this.
@FalconMomot there's herbed varients. And stuffed ones.

It was just as additional info I was looking for. Basically I want to know how messengers in general do it now a days. I modified the question accordingly. — Andrew 45 mins ago

@cole How was the workout?
@faker: Yeah... if you design a "messenger" for a "huge user base" and you need to ask such questions, you're way over your head anyways...
lol
whatsapp is basically glorified jabber with mindshare.
it's a typical facebook killer question and as such we can't help
It's the next big thing!
other than to say get a conslutant
12:18
what's a facebook killer question?
just tell him to buy F5's - he'll look up the price and move on to do something else
@Iain this is close to what I want to ask on main.
"get a consultant"
@MichelZ It's when someone makes wild claims that they're about to build something huge that will kill Facebook the way Facebook killed Myspace.
I'm seeing my clients start to pull away and want more in-house knowledge.
12:19
@MichelZ The claims are almost always absurd.
@MichelZ I have $idea that will put facebook out of business what hardware/software/xxyzzy do I need
but the people they hire to house this knowledge seem to be... not qualified.
we should actually have a "Get a consultant" close reason
:D
@ewwhite not your problem dude
@Iain oh, but it is...
12:20
and usually those projects are over-engineered. Yes twitter/facebook needs to build their own CDN, you don't. Not in the beginning. Probably ever.
because I'm being asked to do the cleanup...
@ewwhite why - they call you and pay you - how is that a problem
and I've had a lot of run-ins with internal staff the past few weeks.
@ewwhite yeah, that's cool... you get money out of it, don't you?
One of my favorites was this one.

Q: Cloud service to receive up to 30000 emails a minute

DavidI am building a business where I want the infrastructure to be able to handle up to 30000 emails per minute during peak periods. The question is what kinds of services offer this? I expect to download the emails using SMTP or similar. I expect each email to have a total attachment size of 2 mb, a...

12:21
@ewwhite increase you rate for fixing fuckups
because boss is paying/hiring me... IT staff is not happy I'm around.
@ewwhite then they have to ask themselves why and respond appropriately
still not your problem
@Iain It becomes a problem because in the end, you need cooperation at all levels.
@ewwhite you have a solution to that - $boss
in the best cases, the boss/IT director/whatever lays down the law, and his people fall in line.
one IT director did that yesterday... and it saved me a lot of grief.
Scott, time to take this conversation offline. No need for Ed to explain some of the basic principles here.

:)
12:24
:)
I'm doing a hardware upgrade for this client, and asked for a 90 minute downtime window.
downtime = evil
the cloud is never down!
their IT guy was like, "sure... you can have 4am-6am Saturday. Oh and the software developers will be making some major changes right after you!"
@MichelZ erm amazon
and I'm like, "bad idea: Change the hardware out... minimize risk and don't modify your software at the same time"
12:26
@MichelZ the cloud sometimes falls faster than a rock
@Iain you did get the sarcasm, I hope
and IT guy is like, "Nope.. not the same time: they will be changing the software after you do your thing"
And I replied, "suck my ass!!"
and then the boss stepped in.
then their IT guy is stupid and should be exposed for it
@MichelZ missed it - sorry
@ewwhite Just say: Here, I'm done. Please sign here that I performed my duty, and everything after now is not my fault
it's perfect, if something goes wrong you can just blame the software guys!
12:28
@faker Even if the idea is tempting, it usually leads to bad blood
exactly.
so I've had a lot of thoughts swirling around in my head about this.
I'm noticing a lot of people who are woefully unqualified for their jobs
It's like the SF main board in real life
:)
I do notice that as well, yes
puts us in a much better position though
At a client yesterday, I saw 2 of the 5 IT guys at this software firm freaking out because they couldn't get the Mac computers in the office to connect to the new copier that had been delivered in the morning.
"I mean, I can add the printer by IP address, but Bonjour doesn't work"
@Dan great - I feel really good right now. Eating some eggs and bacon now.
and since the firm doesn't have DNS, that makes life a lot harder for them
13 hours ago, by 84104
@ewwhite Would you say that not having DNS has put them in a BIND?
12:32
why no DNS ?
Yes, it does.
@Iain Incompetence.
@Iain They do have DNS... their private DNS zone sits on Amazon Route53.
and their Sonicwall firewalls hand out 8.8.8.8 as the resolver via DHCP.
And I think they have a /22 internal scheme for their 50-person office.
how do things get THAT BAD?
I've been working with them 9 months, and no progress has been made on DNS.
I don't know... I think they hire the wrong people
5 Linux engineers...
50 users (all Mac)
there's 1 windows PC.
3 data centers + multiple hosted servers around the world
I was hired to build a vSphere cluster and do a data center buildout.
@ewwhite One of my coworkers is currently out at a certain client... where their ops staff is so bad that half the department is forbidden by the devs manager to work on deployments
and one of their Linux engineers was like, "KVM or GTFO"
12:37
...where a certain server was down for a week because the ops staff had "lost the documentation"
@JennyD so just bad blood due to incompetence?
...where in every SPRINT run one of the Risks is always "the ops will mess stuff up"
3
@ewwhite I think the only way that place will ever get their ops to work properly would be to fire them all and hire new ones
I went to the boss-man and said, "you want VMware for what you're doing". He agreed. Their main BOFH threatened to quit.
so they hired two NEW Linux engineers in anticipation
and one of those engineers asked to be the "infrastructure manager"
why's he/she so opposed to VMware?
@tombull89 "I haven't touched Windows since 1996... I want to be able to do everything on the CLI. I have KVM/libvirt on my Debian machines at home, so I definitely know a little about virtualization"
@tombull89 because VMware kinda needs Windows to build/run.
so the two new Linux guys come in... and one took at a look at the small 3-host vSphere cluster I built in February and says, "I'm wiping it... you're going to do it over and show me how to do this"
he wiped everything... picked up the equipment, moved it to a data center and plugged things in.
I was asked to visit the office yesterday and build the cluster all over again in front of him
12:44
paid twice :)
Whoa wtf @ewwhite
bleh
"Pay attention, because I do not have the time nor the crayons to explain it again"
Of course, things weren't connected right, DHCP didn't work, and there were issues with the MBR on reused VMFS partitions.
@Iain more like three times, since the BOFH guy wanted to see me install ESXi a few months ago..
and this is a problem how ?
and I want to stress that the process of building the cluster is not important.
@Iain 4 days of work that should have been done and complete in January/February is still going on.
12:47
have you been paid ?
well, no, you're probably only going to need to build the cluster once.
so it makes me look ineffective... has stalled their projects... is a drain on my time.
@Iain definitely been paid... but at some point, you are taking advantage of the situation. For me, I see that the staff they have is misguided, technologically religious and actually stands in the way of progress.
like not getting DNS running
you worry and whinge about stuff that's not a problem
@Iain Well, I didn't perform...
you are not responsible for their internal politics, you've been paid, move on
12:50
Yesterday, I still didn't get the cluster built
and no doubt you informed the $boss why
@Iain Apparently, the boss is avoiding the new infrastructure manager... so um... there's something going on there.
but yes, I have to go back
So I gave that guy with his "huge" messenger service a few words.

Q: Internet routing table breaks 512,000 routes

Frank ThorntonLooks like with all the mass IP grabs as well as subletting of space, things have finally hit the 512K mark. Anyone on the raw end of an upstream router that ran out of route space? @tombull89 Well, google plus automatically backs up stuff as soon as you take them if you're on wifi
so I find that kinda neat
Dropbox will do teh same.
Set phasers to stun.
Personally - I prefer dropbox for it, because it then automatically syncs to my home computer systems.
I would use Dropbox, but I prefer self-hosted, so I use BitTorrent Sync to copy files between my desktop, server, and phone, and then use OwnCloud as a front-end to browse it all.

Q: Why stackexchange.com promotes sexual perversion?

begueradjI was interested to read this blog. Everything was right, but further in the bottom of the page, I saw a shocking image that I feel shame to describe. Look to where the camera focuses on that picture.Where is the interest for stackexchange.com to promote perversion and pornography ?

the funny thing is, that guy hasn't visited The Comms Room, yet.

@cole that one was the most irritating of all
@TheCleaner yes.
I can call O365 support direct...I was hoping someone I trusted here would know.
Before I sit on the phone for an hour...
14:28
I hate it when someone's idea of "respecting their culture" means doing what they say on your property -- no one is forcing them to come to SE's blog
last I checked, the USA is a sovereign nation, and SE is an independent entity within that sovereign nation
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ agreed.
What bothers me more, had it been a man with shorts on (probably even that short, too) he'd have no issue.

My current spam/phishing links are from something called copy.com. I THINK Barracuda runs it....
@ewwhite - do the spam logs keep the original body as well or just the headers? You could have them send the same message to your Gmail or similar and compare the body to see what the odd double quotes are...
Bob
Bob
@ewwhite If only the "META: message body is 50-75% uppercase" was an insta-block :P
But that drop score rule of 5 points seems pretty low if such a simple email generates a 6.61. Maybe a quarantine at 5 and drop at 10 would make more sense...but that's up to you and the customer.
@TheCleaner I compared an accepted message to a rejected one, and the difference is "2.80 WEIRD_QUOTING_2 META: Weird repeated double-quotation marks "
