Q: "Core Charge" on defective server HDDs

BrianI have collected a pretty decent amount of SAS and SCSI disks over the years that have a predictive failure warning. I was just about to throw them all out, but wondered if any of the manufacturers offer a buy back program or maybe a credit toward the purchase of new hardware. Surely there are so...

@ewwhite It's not a battery...

Yet most of the disks I use are refurbished.
(yes customers, I'm selling you refurbished HP gear!!)

@ewwhite It's not like they'd buy new...

I prefer HP refurb
Same warranty.
I get less DOA stuff.

12:39 AM
On a plane... can't open that.
people will look at me weird

@ewwhite Only if you have a blanket on your lap that starts vibrating

I've seen someone give head on a plane
that was... precious
Flying to Antigua from Miami.

@ewwhite wow

first class, too

Sometimes I wonder if I'm missing out
I'll never get head in first class on an airplane

12:47 AM
Yeah, you're missing out.
@MichaelHampton So how would you distribute your software to your RHEL 6.2 and 6.5 servers? :)

@MarkHenderson pre owed?

@ewwhite I wouldn't be holding back any machines on 6.2, that's how. The vendor can go fuck themselves.

@JourneymanGeek Well its fake
There was a real BMW one, but I liked the fake Aston one better

@MichaelHampton Yeah, I couldn't imagine that. But the OP is going down the wrong path, right?

The primrose path refers to a life of ease and pleasure, or to a course of action that seems easy and appropriate but can actually end in calamity. == In popular culture == An early appearance of the phrase in print occurs in Shakespeare's 1602 play Hamlet (Act I, Scene III), where Ophelia, rebuffing her brother Laertes' insistence that she resist Hamlet's advances, warns Laertes against hypocrisy: Do not, as some ungracious pastors do, Show me the steep and thorny way to heaven, Whiles, like a puff'd and reckless libertine, Himself the primrose path of dalliance treads And recks not his own rede...

12:55 AM
@MichaelHampton funny, since I wrote, "you don't find people still running RHEL 6.2"

It's windows, so two interfaces cannot be in the same subnet. It simply won't allow it. — Ricky Beam 3 hours ago
That's wrong. Isn't it?
You can totally have two network interfaces in the same subnet

ye
s

Can anyone direct me (or tell me what to search for) to information regarding deploying a new network in a mixed OS environment? (i.e. Common tools/services which can be used seamlessly and aren't OS dependent)
I am not having luck finding what I am looking for

a new network?

Like a full infrastructure basically
I know how the network will be comprised (physically), but I need some help figuring out how to implement services, and maintain it correctly

that's pretty broad
You kinda either know how to do it or you don't.

1:12 AM
I can put it in a question.

@NoTime It will be closed, as the main site doesn't do "shopping" or research-based questions
What you need to do is start with the services that the company wants to have
And work your way from there

I will be implementing it
Starting new business

@NoTime or maybe help us understand what you are unsure about?

Is it going to be 100% Windows workstaitons with 100% Linux servers?

@ewwhite I want to be able to do cross os services, I only really have experience with MS Server

1:15 AM
Or a mix of linux and windows on workstaitons? etc

The server will be Linux supporting 2 OSX, and 3 'Windows 7' computers

@NoTime I build new environments all the time... partially why it's hard to say, "oh, here's how you do it"
I prefer Linux on the server, but Windows where it makes sense...
so Active Directory - YES
Exchange mail - YES
Windows DHCP/DNS - YES

I want to implement VPN, a SAN, and poissibly VOIP

you can tie Linux servers into Active Directory

OK, so better to have a MS Server

1:16 AM
Storage is a whole world of choices...

For AD

Will you have virtualization?

I can get VMWare I am sure.
Right now there is no huge price point. But I won't need an overblown server, and a bunch of stuff. I will be doing all the cabling myself, and setting everything up

are you up to the task?

I just haven't run a Linux Server before, or had a cross OS network, aside from onesies and twosies which someone else did
I have done lots of cabling, and networks from boxes through sattellites
but everything was MS

1:18 AM
not to sound mean, but I'm a consultant, and I spend so much time cleaning up environments, that it's hard to understand how people can gain this experience if they don't already have it.
DOn't be thrown off by Linux.
or Mac, for that matter
you can link the Mac to AD as well

I understand that it is going to be a lot of work. Maybe I should forgo having a Linux server? I wanted to reduce price of software in exchange for support

Hmm...
the business and needs should dictate what you do at the server level.
if you don't need Linux, don't use it.

Main thing is SAN (not OS dependent), able to access network from outside (not OS dependent), web/webmail already taken care of.
So really I guess I should stick to what I know... unfortunately.. I don't like MS as much anymore
I could always virtualize something on the server
Honestly @ewwhite just having this conversation helped.. I couldn't get through the thought process on my own. Thanks

yeah, I dunno.
I mean, I stick to certain things.
I like Active Directory and Exchange a lot.
I'm a Linux engineer, though...
Storage has too many options...
server hardware options are pretty varied... but I prefer HP

And I'm happy to dump MS wherever I can get away with it.

1:24 AM
Cisco ASA 5505 for the small firewalls and VPN capabilities.
APC batteries.
APC racks
HP ProCurve switches
and I use @MichaelHampton to do my hard work.

I had the ASA 5505 on shopping list. I was going system76, but HP would be ok for server. APC of course :)

in the US?

I am yeah

(I sell HP at unbeatable prices shill)

Heh. Not for a little while. I just have to build the network in my head before the business proposal
That's why it's kinda hard I needed to bounce it off someone I guess
You have a site?

1:28 AM
ServerFault usually isn't the place... but if you went to Spiceworks, you'd get all sorts of opinions in how to do this.
@NoTime no, I'm a consultant and offer HP to my customers... but can link you to my vendor.

Ok

shit. I am being super unproductive today

@JourneymanGeek That's OK. I was too.

@ewwhite Not sure where you want to link it

no, not send a website.. connection. It's old school... we do business over the phone :)
anywho, my flight is landing. Signing off.

1:33 AM
Ok have fun
I'm off

2 hours later…
3:57 AM
Ugh
It's like moving to the west coast has ended all of the chat activity

Bob
4:21 AM
What's this about chat activity?

@Bob There was marginal amounts today
damn lenovo keyboard

4:39 AM
@Jacob I've been too busy to chat lately
Too much work, not enough time to do it all in

@MarkHenderson Oh yeah?

Believe it or not I do actually work most days
But lately it's been crazy

@MarkHenderson It happens
That's the problem falcon has.

I've been doing a full 10 hours in the office, then another 2-3 hours at home lately

He's been too busy working on redacted

4:41 AM
And I now have $160/month in Azure credits. You can't do a whole lot with that, but you can a few tiny VMs

@MarkHenderson for work or for fun?

I consolidated all our seperate Ubiquiti uniFi controllers into a single controller on Azure so I can configure them all from one location
@Jacob Well I got it as our work now has BizSpark which includes MSDN which include $160/month in credit for Azure. But we have no desire to run anything on there business-wise so I basically have it for myself
I might throw a few DCs up there. Can probably get a few of them in there for free.
But the VPN back to the sites is $30/month/endpoint

@MarkHenderson you have ~5 employees? Why do you have several APs?

@Jacob We have a lot of clients and we do a lot of stuff for a lot of people
I also put my home ones up there
And yes I am totally flooding my immediate neighbours with my WiFi (but I turned off SSID broadcast on the outside AP, so they won't even know it)

@MarkHenderson Did you scan or is that an estimate?

4:48 AM
@Jacob Its an estimate calculated by the controller software, based on the known properties of the APs
Its pretty accurate though. By the time I go to the purple bit, I can connect but nothing actually works
As I get into the orange part, it works but is a bit slow
I could get the AP about another 100cm higher, but I couldn't reach to the top of the pole that was there and I'm not brave enough to take stepladder actually onto the roof itself
For some reason my house has a gigantic 300Mhz antenna mounted on a huge pole, so I just re-used that mounting, but couldn't reach the top of it safely

Must go exercise...

Bob
s/brave/stupid/

DOOM!

@Jacob I started Couch 2 5K again the other week. This will be my third time too
First time, I finished it and was doing 5k's three times a week. Then it got cold.
Second time, I got to week 7, then had a baby, and cbf'd
It's a bit like quitting smoking. Each time you do it you get better at it.

5:09 AM
@MarkHenderson: you should get a flagpole. Then run up the AP on it as needed ;p

5:27 AM

morning

G'day

ugh, I can't deal with the close queue lately
so depressing
not even funny anymore

morning

I want to respond to pretty much all of the questions with "You're doing it wrong. Try doing it right instead."

7:15 AM
@FalconMomot why bad entries in it or the questions are truly bad?
I see that the overall queueueue length is increasing so it seems like more and more people who can are choosing not to review and new people can't because of low rep and inability to gain rep because of paucity of voting

hm
@FalconMomot: eh, I sort of gave up on the review queues.

@Iain the questions are just pathetic.
@JourneymanGeek sure

(outside, of course, the mod flag queue, and occational regular review queues when I am SUPER boreded)

@JourneymanGeek snap - audits did it for me

@Iain: thats one of the things.
and (least on SU), ironically its the sheer weight of my modly closevotes.

7:30 AM
Your description of the exploit still makes almost no sense (I still think you mean forced browsing, not XSS). However, if I were you, I'd work on securing my application, unless you want to play whack-a-mole with the source until the end of time. Look at your access logs I guess? — Falcon Momot 18 secs ago
my god the guy that's a response to is an idiot

good morning.

Q: What is logcheck, and why is it consuming 100% CPU out of the blue?

Yuji TomitaI have a server that's hardly used, basically a fresh linode VPS with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. It has been running for 14 months with hardly a blip in the CPU graphs (2% max, average over 2 hours). Suddenly, the past 2 hours have been at 100%. The culprit is an egrep running by the user logcheck. Most...

lovely question title..
we cannot say hire a sysadmin in comment right?

of course we can!

ye but i am sure it gets deleted :( so no reason to do it in the first place

by whom?

someone will flag it , and for all i know i do not have yet flagged comments. I would like to keep it that way.

obviously a dev again.. "freelance web design and development "
fuck them, seriously..

ayup
web developers are the worst kind

meh - just do it or say something like You need to speak to your manager about some much needed education in the tools you are required to use - you desperately need it

@Iain i am not quite at that part i am afraid, you are way ahead of me there :)

Q: Simple linux router with two NICs

HarryI tried following the guides to no avail @ - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Router - http://www.yourownlinux.com/2013/07/how-to-configure-ubuntu-as-router.html I have a small Linux box with two NICs: Cable modem/router (out of my control) ----> LINUX BOX w/ two NICs: eth2 => connected to ...

@DennisNolte why - it is good advice for the $clueless

looking nice, still both shit.
@Iain it is not like they will listen.

::shrugs::

i was going to answer the "simple router" stuff, but figured out first: way too much work for someone who takes 16 hours reading what? examples, manuals? nothing of that sort?..
ah fuck that, lets get some work done, this is depressing

@DennisNolte anyone who tries to follow a guide, fails, and comes here for support should be sent right back to the guides author. That that OP tried two different guides and still failed suggests you should just walk away and die a little inside

7:49 AM
People need to publish less unofficial step-by-step guides.

@Iain you should definitely not die inside because someone else is too inexperienced (or dumb) to read a guide...

@Iain actually a lot of guides assume you know enough about the topic that you do not need the guide anymore..

they encourage people to ignore the docs and ignore the theory.
then they come here "I followed all the magic incantations, why does my thing not work as I imagined?"

@FalconMomot: meh, I think thats a user problem

@JourneymanGeek who else are those guides for?

7:50 AM
@JourneymanGeek its all of our problem, just see the bot net servers everywhere..

@FalconMomot: I benefit from them by stopping to understand what I'm doing
but they're a good starting point when learning something new

thats why the victims of the hacks should be punished aswell.. you have a wordpress install somewhere and know nothing how to update or keep the server save? ye thats a large fine you have to pay.

@JourneymanGeek if maybe they were less about the steps and more about what was going on maybe I could support that

@FalconMomot: or maybe make people type shit out instead of copypasting them

less so with "here is how you forward a port in iptables" without mention of things like first dispositive match.
speaking of iptables, here is my favourite strategy instead of playing the port game and the whack-the-bot game

7:54 AM
ah

if you don't do business with anyone in a country, and you don't intend to, use a geoip service and block all traffic from there.

eh
iIt sounds almost like you're bitching about that elasticsearch question on SU

then, secure your fucking systems and stop worrying about bots picking off low-hanging fruit.

@FalconMomot wont work if you have business with ppl in china and east europe :)

7:56 AM
eh. I need to do PM on my VPSes.

@DennisNolte there are a good number of spambots and rotor00ters everywhere else too

oh, and moving stuff off our mutual acquaintance' VPS.

To clean up, kill the offending processes, and delete all of the offending files in /tmp.

@FalconMomot: neither is she

@JourneymanGeek SU, not SF :(

@JourneymanGeek also the proprietor has the attention span for businesses and projects of a butterfly ;)

shit, i still need to answer someone on SU before i can downvote, ah screw it.

7:58 AM
I'll probably move my bouncer to the VPS I run iris on.

well
people are all idiots
if we threw all the idiots in jail we would have more people inside than out
also stupid people have rights also I guess ;)

@FalconMomot well, US is going that route, 3 % or something inside jail?

@DennisNolte not all of them stupid! they threw weev in jail, for instance.

@FalconMomot agreed.

@FalconMomot: weev is kinda stupid
I mean, rule 0.

8:00 AM
@FalconMomot sadly there is not enough pressure from society and laws for beeing stupid.

don't get caught

@JourneymanGeek I'd say more naive than stupid but hey

@FalconMomot: domain specific stupidity? ;p

they were going to throw aaron swartz in jail!

@FalconMomot: that was just...

8:01 AM
as i mentioned above, imagine someone has to pay for the damage his hacked server does.. that would mean sooo many joobsss

official penis waving.

@DennisNolte my company is in the business of making that happen sometimes...
not quite like that I suppose
but, when you write vulns and then external security auditors point them out, sometimes things happen ;)
if you obstruct the audit and then also comes a low complexity critical vuln you wrote, sometimes things happen quickly ;)

Bob
Ooh, Tomcat vuln?
I wonder if I'm about to have a "fun" day sometime in the near future.

8:28 AM
tomcat is a vuln :P
also a bug :P
in fact, java is a bug
well, I guess all vulns are bugs
except when they are features and then they become bugs anyway
have you ever given any serious thought to being drunk? it's really advisable.
especially when thinking about such things as tomcat and java.

I can't ever remember giving any thought to tomcat and java when drunk - I guess it works then ;)

yup!

8:45 AM
I guess every tomcat/java developer was drunk when giving any thought on developing it

s/Windows Me/java

9:03 AM
Anyone got any favourite .eu hosting providers ?

I like transip for vps and domains

@DennisKaarsemaker what about whole servers ?

Very little experience with that. I never did whole servers myself, and work needs are obviously way different :)
hetzner seems popular though

this will apparently be a backup system for one that's already in hetzner so they're out

1&1 is popular too I guess
never used them tough

9:14 AM
I'd avoid 1&1
all I hear about them is the humongous amount of spam coming from servers hosted there
even if it's not their fault, their IP reputation is utterly shot.

I have physical servers at Hetzner and VPS at hosteurope
much more problems with Hetzner than HE

hmm, it's really hard to find a recent source showing in any detail that java is unsuitable as a computer science teaching language

@faker i can second hosteurope, while you should be certain you do not want to upgrade your server afterwards, pretty expensive but never had "real" issues with them for the last ~8 years (private + company)
@faker Hetzner: same shit as strato or server4you.. how the hell did united internet get so big?.. Sadly i did not invest read money in their stock ~5 years ago..

10:17 AM
@Iain I like glesys.com for VPS

@Iain I use digitalocean.com most of the time

@JennyD Cheers
@Nick I like DO too but not for this - needs to be physical

@Iain you mean dedicated servers? hmm no idea then

IIRC husband and I have got four VPSes with them now - one for mail, Usenet and primary DNS, one secondary DNS, and one each for our own web and development stuff.
We've had no problems at all with them, and we've used them for a couple of years at least. Plus they offer FreeBSD in addition to Linux. Me like.

a lot of sites (like ebay.de) are not accessibly from our office - I'd just like one normal day without emergencies :/

10:34 AM
@Iain colo, managed or something in between?

@MathiasR.Jessen unmanaged bare metal sort of thing

@Iain Hetzner is huge and alright on price, but the customer experience is... shall we say "varying"

@MathiasR.Jessen yes I have heard and seen on the front page stories about hetzner. This is apparently a server to act as a backup for one already in a hetzner DC so it needs to be with someone else

@Iain I've had pretty good experiences with Bahnhof in sweden, but only virtual servers. All reliable providers I know of here in Denmark are pretty pricey

how pricey ?

10:44 AM
3-4x Hetzner

perhaps more pricey than will be acceptable

@MathiasR.Jessen I've heard bad things about their abuse response

@MathiasR.Jessen and I think the customer experience is a lot to do with $cluelessness

@MathiasR.Jessen Bahnhof are not only good, they're Good. They spend a lot of energy working to keep an open internet and generally oppose helping the NSA spy on us.

@JennyD Well, having had WikiLeaks and the bay hosted @ Pionen says it all ;)

10:50 AM
@MathiasR.Jessen I've a friend who was sysadmin at an other big company that was hosted @ Bahnhof. He happened to be in the datacenter when the police raided the Bay... he only narrowly managed to keep his company's stuff out of the raid. They weren't being very careful to only take the TPB servers.

@JennyD Not surprising. Another example of massive $cluelessness

I have 1and1 for domain and web hosting - I've been with them for just over 8 years. Never had any isues.
I've also recently got a dedicated through SoYouStart (sister company to OVH) and they're okay. I did look at Hetzner as well - some of their auction servers are quite good (well, the price of the servers drop until they're all gone).
@MathiasR.Jessen Bahnhof have the awesome datacenter that looks like a Bond Villian Lair.

@tombull89 Yup, Pionen, built into solid granite rock. I actually have a voucher from Bahnhof for a free tour through it should I ever come to Stockholm :D

@MathiasR.Jessen that would be something seriously worth doing

11:15 AM
@MathiasR.Jessen name some names for providers in denmark

is there something in the water at the moment? pregnancy annoucements and babies are popping up on facebook at a rapid rate currently.

@tombull89 well, the cannot hide their christmas fucks anymore..

Ticket opened at our datacenter provider "Users cannot reach our websites anymore from several locations, we see packets getting dropped by the managed firewall which appear to be legit, what is going on?!?" -- response "oh yeah, we have connectivity issues at the moment"
well great! Maybe tell us once you notice it and don't let us waste time investigating it also! ffs!

@faker ebay.de is still inaccessible from here

@MathiasR.Jessen oh, you have that too? Which provider if I may ask?

@MathiasR.Jessen strange, ebay.de works again from here (Colt is our ISP) since a few minutes or so
