@Magellan for me MSP is MSN Service Protocol
that's about all.
@freiheit nopenopenope. I do not even want to know that ringworm of the groin even exists.
8
@Magellan I think I glossed over Managed Service Provider, but it was either that or Microsoft Student Partners lol
@Jacob You probably shouldn't google it and go to the wikipedia page, then. :)
@DennisKaarsemaker I'll check. The setup for that is part of why I'm so grumpy at the moment.
22:01
(no, really: do not go to the tinea cruris web page unless you're really prepared)
@freiheit Google loads wiki inline these days.
@Jacob At least it doesn't load the image inline, though...
@freiheit Thank Heaven for Small Blessings?
@Magellan That's an interesting penis nickname, but I guess it makes sense...
22:03
@freiheit Very Small Blessings. =D
@Magellan That's a lot more than small... It was painful to read about if I saw a picture of groin ringworm I'd be sick and unable to get on a bike again.
@BigHomie Flagged that.
@Jacob For?
@Jacob You're a dude, you should know about these things.
Hey now. Reserve flagging for me harrassing Kevin, okay?
it's also sfw oddly enough
@BigHomie I didn't really.
I was making a funny about my gore tolerance.
22:04
@BigHomie Flagged for Blatant Jackassery.
:P
@Jacob me either, but once you've had an std test, those things will cease to matter.
@Magellan But that's actually rather appropriate
@BigHomie Yeah, they gore you out with those photos. I do need to get tested though.
@Jacob flag whoever decides to onebox that though on the real
I have a feeling I know who it's gonna be
22:06
@BigHomie Yeah, Onebox that and it's war
Oh I wasn't talking about me, but there are worse sfw things to onebox
you guys need to toughen up. work in a hospital for a year
Here's a better onebox. A brewery in progress, and my dad pipe-fitting.
@Jacob I...I...don't get it.
Shifting the subject
22:09
@RyJones A couple years in a mental health clinic would do well enough too. The nurses in the shelter I worked at found more than 50% of the known necrotizing fasciitis cases in the past 15 years.
@RyJones Yep
<< (works @ a medical school)
@RyJones Actually, when I get in a little better of a shape I'm going to apply for the rescue squad
@Jacob What's the brewery name? Is that a 20-barrel system with 4 fermenters?
@freiheit O'Connor[oconnorbrewing.com/] I'd have to ask dad I just ran in to give him some parts and I had somewhere else to go.
@Magellan How's that even possible?? No one suspected the place was the cause?
22:10
@Jacob You have any more pics? I know some home-brewing mechanical engineering types that would need some alone time with a setup like that.
@Magellan Yeah
@BigHomie No, the place was clean. The people are usually WAY crazy and end up in all sorts of strange environments.
@Magellan I'd still be suspect. Have you seen what that looks like?
/rhetorical
@BigHomie Yes, unfortunately. I'm going to forget that we're having this conversation considering that I just ate lunch.
@Magellan Ok. <Silently decides not to onebox Necrotizing fasciitis wiki>
@Jacob That's wassup, I thought there was a dead body in the photo I had to find for a second
22:13
:15674483 Mmmm.... I think when one of my local breweries did a huge upsizing recently, they borrowed from the bank and had it mostly paid off by the time the new stuff came online.
I kills me how hard it is to open a distillery
you have to build it out and sit on it for a year+ while the ATF issues your permit
@Jacob Glycol jacketed fermenters? :)
@freiheit that's what woodinville whisky uses
@RyJones And how hard it is to (legally) home distill compared to home brewing.
@freiheit you can buy kits that work out-of-the-box pretty well
22:16
@RyJones Most breweries do these days. Unless maybe they're small, only doing ales, and located someplace cool.
@freiheit Mmmmm... Lagunitas...
@Jacob best way to handle difficult customers is time and material
@RyJones I don't which regs are state (California) and which are federal, but home distilling requires a permit, can't actually be done in a residence, etc... Home brewing you just buy a kit and do it on your stove and it's totally legal as long as you keep it under 200 gallons a year and don't sell it (and a few other things, I guess)
@Jacob Those kettles are huge
@freiheit yes, I understand completely, I spent quite a bit of time and no small money looking into setting up a legal distillery
@Jacob I was a general contractor for about five years
Oh man, now that I have this Raspberry Pi to fuck around with, I'm gonna' be asking you guys so many basic-ass remedial Linux questions...
22:20
@RyJones Construction?
T&M is a polite way to tell them to fuck off
@RyanRies Ban Him
@BigHomie I put him on the ignore list
@RyJones Really?
y?
How am I not worse than he is?
@BigHomie residential construction, residential, commercial, and industrial interiors and painting
22:21
He ignores you to Yacob
built subdivisions, painted a lot of CMU
@RyJones You have everybody on your ignore list, don't you? ;)
@RyJones Yeah I was kidding, but looking at his server fault profile, I see he probably wasn't kidding.
(Done deleting things. Sorry, can't leave things about customers on a google index chat)
I bet he doesn't have as many as me
22:23
I actually need to send an email to Iain, and ask him to unignore me...
four right now.
@Jacob You better b/c next time it's getting permalinked
@Jacob so don't mention specifics
@BigHomie I can mention them, I just can't leave what I said.
@Iain ignores even himself.
22:23
man, even looking at the wikipedia article for CMU gives me flashbacks
@RyJones Central Mich?
@MatthewIfe it won't let me :(
Setup two accounts and ignore one another. Its the only reasonable compromise.
@BigHomie Actually, there was a professor from Bangladesh that pronounced my name Yackub. It was rather irritating.
@Jacob yep. Back in the Day, there was no J
22:25
Pedal time!
See you folks later.
@MatthewIfe I just ignore everyone else
Achievement unlocked! Starlight: Rule the star wall!
@Jacob Wesley does that a couple times each week.
@Magellan @Wesley has at least two stalkers though, @Yackub doesn't.
kce
kce
Is installing .MSIs with GPOs a fools errand? I no longer have SCCM in $NewJob.
22:35
@kce oh baby, I'm so sorry
@kce did you join @cole in the land beyond time?
@BigHomie Does @PauskaSock count? On second thought, I don't really want to know.
kce
kce
@DennisKaarsemaker @RyJones - Small/Medium Business so no SCCM.
@DennisKaarsemaker he's doing AJAX-over-smoke-signals
kce
kce
(yet)
22:36
@RyJones I think he already upgraded to telegraph
@DennisKaarsemaker hmm, smoke over copper? Intriguing.
kce
kce
@RyJones - So I'm taking your response to indicate that using GPOs to install software is, uh... painful.
@kce you're re-inventing SCCM in CMD scripts
kce
kce
@RyJones - All you need to say. :(
I mean, the idea isn't as bad as it could be, but the results are bad. How do you rollback stuff? How do you ensure the install worked?
22:39
Apr 3 at 18:29, by BigHomie
user image
kce
kce
@RyJones - So it's basically just automating the running of the msiexec command and hoping that works.
do you handle the guy on a cellmodem who logs in from a hotel in BFE, then you push a 400 meg installer?
@kce sure. I mean, it's been done, but there's a reason the industry moved on
kce
kce
@RyJones - Not in the SME-space. We're still walking to each machine to update software.
But yeah. I see your point.
how many seats are we talking?
kce
kce
22:42
Maybe I should just move the rest of our services into the "Cloud" and then look for new work.
~100 maybe
tough place to be.
@kce is Windows Intune in the budget?
kinda small for sccm
kce
kce
@RyJones - Yeah. I felt with 400-450 clients at $Job[-1] were just barely big enough for SCCM.
@BigHomie - Maybe. We got some "Cloud" management stuff with Meraki but it looks pretty basic so far.
@BigHomie $6/user/month isn't too bad
22:45
$600 a month is small change to support 100 seats, really
@RyJones beats sneakernet, especially for a distributed environment
@kce Seattle.
I read a great quote today: "You can replace every mention of the Cloud with Virginia with full fidelity"
kce
kce
@Magellan - что?
@freiheit - Yeah. Maybe PowerShell. Maybe Windows InTune.
22:47
@kce Lots of jobs here. =)
@Magellan I hear Chef is still hiring
@freiheit nice
@RyJones IT labor market's getting very tight right now.
kce
kce
@Magellan - I don't have any Linux skills anymore. It's been like two years in the Windows small/medium business area. I am the dumb.
22:49
@Magellan tight as in hard to find people or hard to find jobs?
@RyJones former. We can't even hire people fast enough to match growth. It's crazy.
@Magellan welcome to my life for the last 5 years :)
@Magellan I know a guy at S that's interviewing (post layoffs, natch) and he has a ton of interviews
his impression of them is the same as yours
@DennisKaarsemaker I don't envy you that. Really tough finding good people now.
23:09
ugh. just got email from head of IT asking all users to reset their passwords. To a custom web form, over http.
@Sirex Gross.
on the plus side. finally getting central auth. 500 users with shadow files has been an eye opener.
@Sirex So you got a phishing scam email from the IT boss? wow...
yup.
23:24
Are you being pen tested?
We make a specific point to never email URLs to users that they're expected to put their password into
i really do wish. Any time i've overthought something like this and thought they were being clever enough to double bluff something, its turned out that no, they really are that dumb.
i'm hoping this will signal a slow move off of novell at least. trying to stay optimistic.
kce
kce
@Sirex - NetWare is Life. NetWare is Love.
like herpes ?
@Sirex Like ringworm of the groin.
23:34
Anyone ever heard of the crypto virus?
One of my produce clients is infected.
@ewwhite Other than the obvious?
It encrypts the first 512k of files.
and renders the files inaccessible...
@ewwhite Cryptolocker eh?
the hacker requests $500 via Bitcoin to gain the unlock key
So, it's a bit dodgey that eBay doesn't have any notice on their website at all, even after you log in, and hasn't sent any direct communication to its members. Right?
23:36
and it increments $500 each day
@MarkHenderson Sup fuckface?
:-*
The only reason heard about them being hacked was because I watched the nightly news that day. If I hadn't watched the news, I woudn't have known
@Wesley Lickin mah own butt
@MikeyB yes
@MarkHenderson I know! I heard it from a friend. Reset my passwords last night. Sucked.
CryptoLocker is a ransomware trojan which targets computers running Microsoft Windows and first surfaced in September 2013. A CryptoLocker attack may come from various sources; one such is disguised as a legitimate email attachment. When activated, the malware encrypts certain types of files stored on local and mounted network drives using RSA public-key cryptography, with the private key stored only on the malware's control servers. The malware then displays a message which offers to decrypt the data if a payment (through either Bitcoin or a pre-paid voucher) is made by a stated deadlin...
23:37
Actually no I decided to let my wife sleep all night on Wednesday night to be nice because she was exhausted. And because of that she has mastitis now, so I have to stay home to look after her + kids
ransomware
Wesleyware
@MarkHenderson What on earth.
@ewwhite @PauskaSock ware
@ewwhite Groinwormware!
@ewwhite That is the suck.
23:38
Just to let everyone know, it will take some time for every eBay user to get our reset email. You can still go to eBay to change password.
@Wesley I usually feed Sophie with one bottle either first or lsat feed of the night so Angela can get at least some span of sleep. But if you're breast feeding and you go too long without actually feeding your breasts get engorged and then infected and you get sick
@MarkHenderson That's awful. =(
I hate it when my lactating breasts get infected.
kce
kce
Life at my new job!
@MarkHenderson There was at least one time where I managed to feed the kid without waking up the wife.
@Wesley Yeah so Sophie woke up at midnight, I fed her a bottle, and then she didn't wake up till 6am so Angela hadnt fed her for 10+ hours
23:39
@MarkHenderson So are you going to race @MikeyB for brood-size? You've only got like nine more to go to catch up!
@Wesley Fuck no
I found out this week that I'm too young to get a vasectomy
so I guess I'm not having sex until I'm like 32
@Wesley Well I'm a Christmas tree now so I've finished the race.
@MarkHenderson Too young??? Hmm.
@MarkHenderson So nothing has changed then.
@MikeyB I've never heard that euphamism and I'm trying to put two and two together.
@Wesley The balls are just there for decoration.
Hah
It's a good thing I'm finding out about this @eBay breach on twitter rather than, you know, getting notified by the company.
23:41
Your trunk was cut and stuck in water to die... ?
@MikeyB Ah okay.
@Wesley I like your interpretation better
^ SFW
@MarkHenderson So I'm going to be using Ruby/Sinatra to make a RESTful API tester. So there's that.
Am I #devops yet?
@Wesley Shit yeah
Oh btw apologies for saying that you worked at MONNGGGGGGGGGDB when of course you work at MONNGGGGGGGGGHQ
Is MongoDB even backed by a company?
23:44
@MarkHenderson It has corporate backers I'm sure.
I mean, it's its own company that rakes in managed services fees, support contracts, and charges partners ass-poundings to be official partners.
Apparently there is a MongoDB company (kinda)
MongoDB Inc. (formerly 10gen) is a software company that develops and provides commercial support for the open source database MongoDB, a NoSQL database that stores data in JSON-like documents with flexible schemas. History The company was first established in 2007 as 10gen. Based in New York City, 10gen was founded by former DoubleClick founder and CTO Dwight Merriman and former DoubleClick CEO and Gilt Groupe founder Kevin P. Ryan with former Doubleclick engineer and ShopWiki founder and CTO Eliot Horowitz and received $81 million in venture capital funding from Flybridge Capital Partn...
@MarkHenderson Yeah, it was called 10Gen before they changed names.
Kinda like how Opscode made Chef, and then changed business named to GetChef.
@MarkHenderson And I would never have known eBay was hacked if I hadn't read it here.
Fuck fuck fuck fuck I waited too long before buying Watch Dogs. It's now $79 on STeam, up from $59
I guess I will be asking someone to gift it to me
@MichaelHampton My wife called to me "Mark did you know ebay got hacked? Come watch this"
@MarkHenderson Holla.
Bob
Bob
23:50
@MarkHenderson Yea, I was complaining about that recently. Then someone linked me to their official announcement, which says they'll email users "later today" or something.
I'm still waiting for that email.
That was two days ago.
@Bob I'm sure they've got an intern hard at work writing out the emails.
Bob
Bob
OTOH, I haven't bothered changing that password... just can't be fucking bothered.
What's the worst that can happen? No, really? If someone wants to use my ebay account to buy me something, by all means!
Actually... on second thought, depending on how their email reset works (if it works)... I should probably change it :S
@Bob The real problem is that now the hackers have your real name, your address, and your password and phone numbers
Identity fraud here we come
(Yes, the passwords were encrypted. Not hashed).
Bob
Bob
@MarkHenderson Not gonna make a difference if I change the password or not, is it? That's a different (and far more important) issue.
@MarkHenderson Are you fucking kidding?
@Bob Not really, but do it anyway
Bob
Bob
23:54
Tell me you're kidding.
@Bob Based on what I read eBay used weasle language. Unless they used "encrypted" to mean "hashed" to the layman - but I doubt it
Bob
Bob
@MarkHenderson Yea, I was wondering about that too.
Hopefully they actually mean hashed.
i doubt it though
Bob
Bob
Most people don't have any idea what a hash is.
And ebay is old enough that it's probably just md5 or something easily reversed
23:54
@Bob That's illegal, isn't it?
Something do to with the marijuanas?
Bob
Bob
@Wesley What's illegal?
Don't hashes have like nine marijuanas in them or something?
@Wesley If by marijuana you mean a salt, then no, most of them don't
(dont worry I know what you mean)
Bob
Bob
@MarkHenderson Urk.
@MarkHenderson I did worry there for a minute. =P
"Here at eBay Industries we hash all our user passwords with Rot13 and encrypt all our data with plaintext algorithms."
@DennisKaarsemaker Urk
@DennisKaarsemaker Looks like a nice place
Bob
Bob
@MarkHenderson You'd hope that they update to newer hash algos (say, on password change). Rather unfortunate that it seems so unlikely, no matter how important it is for security.
Makes me wonder how secure PayPal is.
