@MDMarra because devops.
I just want to buy a fucking cable and there are like, 3 different specs for displayport that all support different things, and some cables have pin-20 connected which fucks up wake-from-sleep
I'm not a SF regular. I don't have the rep to answer a protected question. But hey, I did what I could: multiple humans have seen my contribution to the subject. Maybe something good will come of it, maybe not; not worries either way. :)
I just want to plug a fucking monitor in. How did shit get so complicated
It used to be that if you have a fucking cable and you plug the fucking cable in to both sides, the device will fucking work. You might need to set bitrate or some shit, but a cable was a fucking cable
My head is about to explode
@MDMarra because consumerism, I think.
@MDMarra that's nowhere near as bad as my problem: I have 2 whisky bottles on my desk, but the glasses are 2 floors away!
20:01
drink out of one directly and bring the other to me
PHILLY ROAD TRIP
@daveloyall You need to to to meta.serverfault.com - the people here are a tiny subset of the people who use SF. You also need to state what your expectations are
Yeah I was gonna say, what are the glasses for?
Who ratifies this stuff though? IEEE?
Aren't the bottles made from glass ?
Who do I direct my rage at?
20:02
@MDMarra apple.
This isnt apple
At the machine
Apple didn't write the displayport and minidisplayport spec
@DennisKaarsemaker MIKEYB!!!!!
20:03
is he a canuck?
yup
It shouldn't take me over 30 minutes to pick out a DisplayPort to Mini-DisplayPort cable. It just shouldn't be this complicated.
I shouldn't have to read a spec sheet to hook up a fucking monitor
I'm really about to have a brain aneurism
@MDMarra I have a startech MinDP to DP I use on my Dell ultrasharp with my T430 that I can recommend
I was looking at them on Amazon and people were bitching that it had pin 20 connected which caused wake-from-sleep issues
the pre-Superb Owl rally is going on downstairs
@JohnD Is your Dell monitor 2560x1440?
fml
I was about to order it but I read the 1 star reviews
Never read 1 star reviews
I really don't fucking care about pushing the on button on my monitor
Reading one star reviews on Amazon will ensure that you never buy anything ever.
@JohnD So wait though. If your laptop sleeps and you wake it, does the monitor come out of standby or no
Because I'm hooking mine up to a T430's mDP port as well
Funny, I read one star reviews and my usual reaction is "You're an idiot, you were doing it wrong/ didn't read the documentation/ suck at life."
Oh. I've never tested that.
If you give me ten minutes I can try that out now while I get some coffee.
20:08
I'd appreciate it
That's what people on Amazon complain about. That if the display sleeps, it doesn't wake properly
brb
Today I almost didn't backup a site, thinking "meh this is such a minor upgrade, nothing will break". 20 minutes later. Boop. Site broken.
@Iain @Iain I'd have to have 5 rep to post on meta.sf. :) Anywho, back to work... TGIF everybody!
backups are so great.
20:15
@daveloyall that's easy enough to make
@MDMarra Yeah if I close the lid or press sleep, and then turn it back on the monitor comes out of powersave mode.
hm ok maybe I'll grab one then
thanks for confirming
No problem.
@mossy "I don't need this backup" is famous last words material
:P
haha.
note for the devs
¯\ _(ツ)_/¯
20:42
@RobM @Dan reference our earlier conversation check out room 101 tonight
finally legal is reviewing ticket I filed at 05:43 this morning
so much for the two hour SLA
Just saw a cry for help from a network admin... mirror.us.leaseweb.net has IPv6 address 2604:9a00:2010:a001:1:face:bad:c0de
@MichaelHampton oh I'd almost pay for that address
@RyJones You know the last half of the IPv6 address is yours to do as you wish, right?
@MichaelHampton eh, I let my airport dole out addresses. Anyway... that's been the case since at least 2011: mailman.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-mirrors/2011-October.txt
20:54
@RyJones I'm sure the bad code hasn't gone away.
21:22
network tech needs patch cables. I offer the ones I have - wrong color. you're welcome!
Seriously. Do you want to stick one orange cable into a sea of blue cables?
@MichaelHampton Especially if that orange cable leads to the beer fridge, yes.
I offered white, black, blue, and orange flat and round cat6, he wanted red, I think
@RyJones Color is important. Blue cables are primary, yellow cables are secondary, red cables are uplinks
And to optimize signal quality (and make the rack feel pretty) all cables should be in a french braid.
Red cables are for strangling.
I know it's important, he will be back in a week for the cutover, he can find the right cables then
shrug
@Chopper3 wuuuuuut?
hmm it's been a while

There's a server monitoring product discussion on HN, btw. news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7156291
22:09
Oh wow. I just tethered to my phone...and got an IPv6 address.
@MichaelHampton nice
@RyJones Yeah. It wasn't doing that last year; only the phone itself got an IPv6 address then.
Oh, and if you haven't played with RHEL 7 yet, be prepared for some strange network interface names.
28: enp0s19f2u5: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UNKNOWN group default qlen 1000

    inet6 fe80::3c77:56ff:fe59:42d4/64 scope link
       valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
looks like a hash of an interface name
I wonder how far it will go with linux and it's weird network stack
22:25
@MichaelHampton ethernet-physical-0-…?
@MichaelHampton looks more like an lxc interface name (veth6WX9ZP)
@pauska As far as people can imagine probably. That is the feature of the bazaar.
@MikeyB I give up?
@MichaelHampton Does it make those names until you give the interfaces a "static" name? Hrm. Gotta play around with 7.
@MichaelHampton install ifrename, and give them useful names?
@MikeyB No, it makes names and they stay the same forever. They don't occasionally reverse themselves like eth0 and eth1 do.
22:32
cough
OK, so p is PCI bus, s is slot, f is function, I have no idea what u means.
@MichaelHampton How exactly are those names derived? Does it have something to do with the pci port, or something? Do they change if someone swaps a network adapter?
Probably that it's USB
Probably that it's really USB and not PCI
@MichaelHampton WTF is with those names? I've got "eno16780032" for the interface on this RHEL7 VM...
@freiheit That one I have no idea
22:40
"[ 10.997523] systemd-udevd[620]: renamed network interface eth0 to eno16780032"... why? what? At least I guess I can maybe change that...
@freiheit It supposedly gets those names out of the BIOS. See what happens when you pass biosdevname=0 on the kernel command line.
@MichaelHampton First I have to find out that that shit lives in /etc/sysconfig/grub now, and involves some script that generates the real stuff....
Shit, they've moved all my things around!
7/SRPMS/uucp-1.07-41.el7.src.rpm
... What decade is this?
kce
kce
Hello.
G'day
kce
kce
22:53
How's everyone's Read-Only Friday going?
@kce I don't observe that holiday
@kce I'm breaking this RHEL7 server all sorts of ways
The SSL certificate on my mail server just expired.
kce
kce
@voretaq7 - You heathen! Read-Only Friday is one of our most hallowed and sacred traditions! Must you tempt the gods with your doooommm!
@kce fuck that noise, my patch windows are on weekends anyway
22:55
@kce I actually have a regular every-2 months patch window on Friday morning
It is a little hard to explain to the users the simple "Friday after the 2nd Monday of odd-numbered months" formula, though.
kce
kce
@voretaq7, Do you enjoy working weekends?
@kce no, but it's part of the job
our customers work weekdays, taking the system offline for maintenance has to inconvenience the least customers, therefore it has to happen on weekends.
kce
kce
@voretaq7 - Do you flex time? Like if work Saturday you get Monday off?
@kce yeah
kce
kce
23:11
Salaried or Hourly?
@kce Someone else was mentioned a job opening in Washington yesterday. I mentioned that they should talk to you.
kce
kce
I think that was @Tanner? I just found a moments time to ServerFault.
@kce salary
I don't enjoy working hourly anymore
kce
kce
@Zoredache I'm not sure how serious I am. I'm just playing with the idea of moving back down south in next year or so... but you know, the right job could certainly expedite that schedule
unless i'm doing contract/project work
kce
kce
23:12
@voretaq7 - Makes sense.
Speaking of jobs did @Wesley ever find something?
yesterday, by Tanner
@Zoredache No job announcement yet. Going by word of mouth for now. The pickings are pretty slim around here... it can be hard to fill the slot with somebody who isn't entirely braindead.
@kce Yeah that was me. Sounds like it'd be beneath you though. ;) Entry-level support, probably around $30k...
kce
kce
23:31
@Tanner I'm not sure about that... I'm not a particularly big fish, I'm just in a particularly small pond.
Where in WA are you?
@kce Wenatchee
'tis a lovely little valley
Smack in the middle of Washington, about 2.5 hours from Seattle. The mountain passes can get nasty during the winter, but otherwise Seattle is pretty accessible.
kce
kce
Ah the dry side of the Cascades.
23:48
@kce Yup. Also the Republican side...
So, Edward Snowden has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
@MichaelHampton There's a ton of people that can nominate somebody, so a nomination doesn't really mean much...
Watch this, they'll give it to Kim Jong-un.
