@qroberts oh god
Yeah I know
i have better at home
I'd rather managed and 48-port
notice, i am not bragging.
15:00
These are perfectly cromulent switches, and should allow you to embiggen your network over time.
Ah ^
Managed, Gigabit and have GBIC capability for fibre uplinks.
Now I am curious though. Would there be performance benefits/problems with 2x16port switches versus 1 larger switch? I am assuming the larger switch would be better but there's also redundancy with multiple switches
Dan
Dan
@qroberts WAAAAAY faster throughput between ports on a single switch
Yeah of course
Dan
Dan
15:02
Bear in mind, multiple switches doesn't add redunancy for end clients
@qroberts Yeah, you're gonna bottleneck switch to switch
@qroberts No redundancy unless you have managed switches with STP.
Dan
Dan
Unless your end devices have two NICs (I.e., servers) to two switches, all you're doing is limiting the impact
Yeah the only server in this specific office has 2 NIC's
Dan
Dan
@qroberts If it's one server and one office, buy the switch with the number of ports you need [+10%]
15:03
Makes sense, I'll go with larger switch :D
looking into ntp appliances, anyone used anything inexpensive, not gps for 6k maybe radio once?
Oh, and you have the power to stop any more network smell accumulating, so start buying HP, Cisco, Brocade, Juniper and stop buying DLINK.
Brocade have some niiiice stuff now
but it's in the 4-figure price tag range
OK, I laughed...
@DanilaLadner We bought a GPS ntp timeserver.
The router is a cisco RV082 10/100 8-Port VPN Router
15:04
@MikeyB I'm not foolish enough to put my fingers next to the blade. Instead I lost a few layers of skin from the base of my thumb... This isn't the first time I've cut myself either, those things are wicked dangerous. =]
Can't remember where from, but I'll have a think.
@qroberts Well, that's not too bad.
Dan
Dan
@RobM has done some work with proper GPS timing, too, I believe
@qroberts Do you have a requirement for PoE?
@TomO'Connor 1 WAP using PoE
@DanilaLadner Old PC with $100 Garmin 18x-LVC
15:06
@qroberts So you don't need a switch with 48 PoE enabled ports.
I have a separate PoE injector for that
Nope
is what we bought.
Dan
Dan
@TomO'Connor We had a PoE terminal (including monitor) to test last year
@qroberts TFFT.
@Dan Wyse?
Dan
Dan
@TomO'Connor HP
15:07
every modern additional switch adds ~20us just for processing delay(latecny), and i am talking about good switches not that it significant for office network.
@ChrisS hehe, seriously?
@Dan I bet it's Wyse tech underneath.
We have two of the model @TomO'Connor mentioned.
@DanilaLadner Why wouldn't I be serious? I've got one at home...
15:08
@Dan COOL!
I believe they have radio models too
@TomO'Connor how much was it?
$460
well for home, not university network -)))
@DanilaLadner Good question.
15:09
Also from LOPSA - We constantly find memory, network, and hard drive failures very early on after turning over to a customer. Sometimes as soon as we start to deploy an OS/software to them. It happens *quite often.*
Dan
Dan
@TomO'Connor Don't think so
http://www.galsys.co.uk/ntp-servers/nts-4000-msf-ntp-server.html

@DanilaLadner ^ radio version of the GPS box that we're using here and Tom's using at his place.
Dan
Dan
Dell owns Wyse now, why would they let HP use it?
Yeah you guys convinced me now. My initial gut instinct told me to get larger switch, possibly managed and not D-Link (Cisco preferably as the router is Cisco). I'll get some pricing and run it against the CFO. Thanks!
15:10
@DanilaLadner We budgeted a grand, I think it was less than that.
He's cheap so it will be interesting
oh not too bad.
PSRemoting is so sexy.
God I fucking hate using Infoblox and not AD-Integrated DNS
Dan
Dan
I've decided that job hunting is weird
I see and get contacted about a lot of permanent roles even though I'm looking for contracting - but I keep seeing roles for less than what I'm on that look really challenging. Then I find jobs offering £10k more and I think "Heh, I could do that in my sleep".

I just need more of the latter :D
15:25
@TomO'Connor ...
@MDMarra What?
@cole larger ntds.dit
@TomO'Connor bloody tux
@MDMarra Oh yeah. We didn't get an explanation, either.
haha
@Dan In my looking I've only found Internship/Apprenticeship/Help Desk type jobs or CIO/ITO/Senior Architect of the Intertubes type positions. Absolutely nothing in between.
15:26
I think the police were informed.
Dan
Dan
@ChrisS :( The contract market moves so quick I'm noticing - I have no idea what it's giong to be like when I'm actually there
recommended Dell server for vmware environment for a SMB?
heavier on RAM, no local storage needed other than optional SSD for flash cache
@FalconMomot Dude, R&D is expensive. That's why Cisco costs more. Same reaason why Dell and HP and IBM cost more than SuperMicro. As a consequence of the R&D, they also work better, have better support and wider adoption. Of course, is that isn't important to you, feel free to go with something cheaper... but be prepared for it to hurt.
SuperMicro isn't that bad, selective models are fine.
Cisco is that overpriced... Just like Apple iPad/iPod/iPhone... But they've got the ecosystem going now (both cases) and momentum is the single largest hurdle for massive markets these days.
15:41
@ChrisS So do an Architect job!
It ain't hard - trust me
lol - says the guy who's answers impress me on a regular basis.
Also, I've been really impressed with a lot of the Cisco BYOD/management offerings lately. Really cool stuff, but requires their L2/L3 switching

Any HAMs around?
Dan
Dan
@MDMarra That's true, to be honest - I actually find the OVERALL quality of engineering to be so low that it's not actually hard to be "good". Some of the architects and design authorities I've met are absolutely no more technical than me
Feel free to abuse these cunts
How in the flying fuck did this get 35 upvotes?
Actually Https doesn't defeat the NSA as they have a back door to the CAs. To defeat the NSA you need a private (non-CA) certificate that is privately distributed in such a way that the NSA doesn't get a copy of the decryption key. O and be sure to use a non-compromised encryption method. — D_Bester 2 days ago
anti-NSA circlejerk
@MikeyB No idea. It's obviously wrong. I blame the developers.
@MDMarra that's what I figured - probably just wait for now.
15:51
> I have always wanted to set up SSL on a server, just for the practice of doing it, and I finally decided to do it tonight.
OT! :P
Dan
Dan
anyone who spends any time bother to try and hide from the NSA is just silly
@mikeyb are you saying that you can't find 35 idiots posting idiotic questions and writing idiotic answers in a week here?
What I want to know is how the question got upvoted?
This is how I just felt that the DC promoted fine w/ no issues even using Infoblox DNS: i.imgur.com/Jk5TqOa.gif

Q: Driving two 2560x1440 displays with Lenovo T430 and 433715U ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3

MDMarraI want to grab a second HP ZR2740w for use in my home office. I have a Lenovo T430 with an Intel HD4000 GPU, not the nVidia model. @MDMarra Reckon SU is going to shout at me?
@Dan Fuckin lol'd
16:11
@MDMarra I use one of these for my third monitor:
@cole It runs windows 7??
But I don't think that's a high enough res for you
@JoelESalas que?
"and upgradeable to Windows 7"
lol
Bad wording on their part
HAHAHA can't help but laugh at this email
Not really a decent question for Main...but what do you do when you decide to replace one backup strategy with another? Do you keep the old tech/software/hardware/media around?
16:14
@JoelESalas can I make it run Windows Vizsla?
Group out of the woodwork starts asking about a server, that is a Dell 1950 running Windows Server 2000
Could you please raise this issue to be highest priority, instead of Priority 2 ? We are shocked to know this important server is not being maintained properly.

Because all the production QC and ISO related analytical data, along with many important evaluation and application data of <this> department have been archived on< Server>, we urgently need to have this server properly maintained, otherwise, if the QC and ISO data get lost or damaged, Waters will be in danger of losing ISO certificates, which are checked twice annually. This will bring disastrous consequences to manufacturing of
a 1950? bloody hell
@cole That thing is easily outfoxed by an ipad
Dan
Dan
Haha, I had to do some work with a bunch of old skool 1950's on 2003 last year
Horrid things
@cole Forward the message to your boss. it's been given "extremely top attention"
16:16
@voretaq7 i did
NOT MY PROBLEM
we have a ton of 1950's still running lab/dev environments o_O
Sometimes these PhD's can be PhDicks.
the only issue ive ever had with them is that they're really picky about ram config
Dan
Dan
16:19
@jlehtinen Yes, I angered them while doing an upgrade - you have to be careful there
@cole What the hell happened? Someone over there look at a calendar and realize it's been 14 years since Windows 2000 was new?
@HopelessN00b they had no idea that it was Win 2000
My boss responded with:
"What's the issue?"
me, right now: i.sstatic.net/5pYQi.gif
@Dan any time i do any ram change i run the dell diagnostics, then memtest for ~24 hours to make sure they're stable...

@jlehtinen Fuck that - straight back in the rack they went
@Dan rofl, yeah they're too cranky for that kind of treatment
16:21
@voretaq7 that wording. Dev.
Sometimes all it takes is for you to get frustrated enough to write up a question here on SF and the server will fall in line. — TheCleaner 5 secs ago
@cole "It's 2014."
There's multiple groups using this server - no one knows who though
@cole Kick everyone out and wait for the phone calls.
@Dan hah no idea

It's like -wtf dude
He's in FL at Lotusphere (my boss)
He's become a real dick to even me the past 2 weeks or so.
@cole :) sounds like a "server" I dealt with once where it was a Win2k workstation sitting under a EE's desk that was running the entire dept's Bugzilla stuff. One day they came to IT and said "how often is <x> backed up?" and I was like "what are you talking about?" Suffice to say, they had gone over 10 years of it running without a crash, etc. and no backup. I was at least a little impressed.
@cole A conference for Lotus? As in Notes? that sounds like.. possibly the biggest waste of time ever.
@NathanC oh, that guy
check out his other questions

Q: How to do sudo apt-get on an AIX machine

alvasI don't understand this AIX. How do I do sudo apt-get on AIX? -bash-3.00$ sudo -bash: sudo: command not found -bash-3.00$ apt-get -bash: apt-get: command not found

@JourneymanGeek dear god keep them the fuck away from.... you know what just tie a lead block and drop them into the ocean. Over a trench.
16:28
@cole Make sure the backups are saved to archives on CDs (or floppies), so the customer has the backups ona type of media that's accessible to their hardware. :o
@HopelessN00b well it's an internal group here.

Give me a redhat, i can yum my way out. With this, it's basically career suicide as a sys admin... — alvas Jan 14 at 12:09
Clearly he hasn't looked at what competent AIX admins get paid
haha
@cole Oh, then bust out the cattle prod. Users first, ancient server second.
16:29
@DanilaLadner Basically...lol.
I may smash my keyboard
@cole over their heads?
This is a business decision, so really, this isn't a "quick fix"
"I'mma beat you with my keyboard 'til it breaks, then kick your ass for breaking it!"
My boss really needs to handle it - not me.
If he wants me to handle it - he can start paying me to be a lead/manager/etc
16:30
@cole at least it's not on NT?
My manager responds "What is the critical issue that needs to be resolved asap?"
@cole "There isn't one"
y'all are backing up the server, so there's no critical issue as far as I can tell, it can wait until he's back in the office.
its like yesterday saw guy asking if he could specify one default gateway to two different interfaces in different vlans and then noting that he has no idea about networking, one of the good strategies i encountered in my career was not to touch things you have no business in.
@voretaq7 exactly.
@voretaq7 I agree.
Dan
Dan
16:34
@DanilaLadner I disagree - getting balls deep into the unknown is exactly why I'm where I am!
The trick is to be very careful
@cole so that's what you tell him. "Our idiot users are being idiots, and basically insisted that I email you. They want me to make major changes to a machine that's so far past its end of support life moss is growing on the case. I'm not doing something that stupid unless you order me to, in writing. We can discuss the plan of action when you return from your conference."
@voretaq7 I'll say something like that
(make sure you include my edit about you only bothering your boss because your users are forcing your hand :-)
and obviously polite it up a bit unless you can call your idiot users idiots :)
How many times do you have to select "Show me less of this" in the Twitter app to stop getting "recommended tweets"? Does the selection make any difference?

@cole We have a bunch of HP branded DisplayLink USB->DVI boxes. They work fairly good, up to 1920x1080 - Mark's looking for 2560x1440
Yeah, I can do 1920x1080 without a problem, and I'm pretty sure I can use the mDP on the laptop itself for the second display, but it defeats the purpose of the dock
I'm looking up the return policy for the Microcenter near me now haha
in my experience usb port replicators with video sucks mule dink
What's coming from a Microcenter?
@pauska If you're staring a Excel all day, they work great. Video, not so much, at all.
@ChrisS the second monitor, if I choose to buy it.
So if it doesn't work with the onboard mDP, I want to be able to take it back
16:40
Gotcha
Good deal?
$399
@MDMarra Isn't there a DP on the back of the dock?
27" IPS 2560x1440 - HP ZR2740w
@Tanner There's one, but I'm using it for the first monitor
Stupid firewall...it blocked facebook on me again
16:41
I gave myself a static IP...it worked for a day. Now it's dropping the packets again on my new IP
so weird
no daisy chain support? (not that I'd rely on it...)
$400, that's pretty good - especially for a name brand
@Tanner I don't know if my GPU or the monitor support it
This model is cheap because it's slimmed down. No speakers, no on-screen display, only brightness control
@MDMarra Do you notice ghosting on the one you have?
only connectors are power, USB (4 port 2.0 replicator built in), dual link DVI, and DP
@ChrisS not at all
16:43
@MDMarra Hm, yeah. No daisy chain...
I was like Woah! a full-sized DP connector!
Don't see many of those anymore
@MDMarra Size queen.

or even has integrated it with vSphere/vCenter?
@dan how comes you quit your job?
@syneticon-dj Yeah
@mickeyb backing up virtual disks or doing host-based backups?
@MDMarra @ewwhite Do you have Group Policy Objects that you keep around and put in place for multiple clients, etc.? Do you just import/export them as necessary?
Oh man I just had a fantastic lunch. But with sausage, whole wheat mac&cheese, and a quinoa/kale/sweet potato side I think my belly is going to be doing the macarana all afternoon.
@ScottPack Hey, hey, macaroni.
17:25
It reminds me of that time I ate a Kashi meal that was mostly whole grains, brown rice, and beans.
Hello Guys, First of all, I would like to apologize for my bad English. Here is the thing, big incident happened in our company a week ago. I heard that the management is going to fire one of our team member b/c of the incident.(No one from my team heard this)
The incident happened b/c of the team fault. It's not just only a one person fault. And i'm going to leave the company if they fire him. It will be very difficult for me to find a job but i'm going to do it. This is what team do right? Has anyone been in the same situation?
@achu No, probably not. You could speak up for him, if you want to do him a favor. It might get you fired too, but since you wanted to quit anyway, it won't make a difference in this case. Plus, it has a chance of saving your colleague's job along with your own.
I may sound like an evil bastard for this but no one person is worth falling on your sword for
especially without a fallback.Trying to talk to management good. Ragequitting bad.
I'd second what @MichaelHampton said and try the workplace.
Ragequitting is always bad.
17:30
ALWAYS
Quitting over an ethical or moral quandary is laudable, but sometimes it's hard to tell the difference.
Generally speaking if someone gets scape goated it's because that was the best reason they had to terminate, not because they were randomly picked out of the hat.
@Achu People only do the grand gesture in Hollywood fiction...
@ScottPack I once had an employer ask me to break into a competitor's servers. I quit.
@MichaelHampton Yeah...that's bad juju.
17:32
@MichaelHampton: thats one of the few cases where thats a VERY good idea
@ScottPack Of course, when I quit, I also sent a copy of my resignation, detailing exactly what I had been asked to do and why, to everyone in the company...and the police.
See, @MichaelHampton's example is probably the best example of when it's easy to tell the difference between rage and shocked quitting.
@MichaelHampton not the competitor's CEO?
@MichaelHampton That would be an interesting exit interview. :)
@ScottPack: that sounds like a measured response to me.
17:34
@ScottPack There was no exit interview. I came in at 6 am, printed a stack of copies, hand walked them around to everyone's desk, and walked out by 7 am. I did get my final paycheck, interestingly enough.
@MichaelHampton Well sure, corporate espionage is just local LE, or at worst FBI. Skipping on your final paycheck could turn into a labor law incident and maybe call up the IRS.
Most everyone I know would much rather tangle with the FBI than the IRS.
@ScottPack The strange part is, I never heard from any level of law enforcement. The company did go out of business within a few months, though.
Definitely the management won't listen to me. So, you guys tell me quitting this way is a bad idea? hmm.. i had a wrong knowledge/connection with the team? or i don't... I'm confused. @MichaelHampton Thanks for sharing your history. you did a wonderful decision.
@MikeyB Nah, moving GPO around can be a PITA. MigTables and all that suck
Clients that need the exact same GPOs are infrequent enough for me that I haven't scripted it
@MichaelHampton That strikes me as a shortsighted approach. Blackmailing the requester seems like the way to go with that one, IMO.
17:42
@HopelessN00b Give me a break, I was 19.
@MichaelHampton Same thing happened to my old man about 8-9 years ago. CEO demanded that he lie to cover her ass in court when they were getting sued for violating their union contracts.
@Achu I think what many of us here feel is that a team is great, but they're co-workers. Much like your employer isn't your friend, typically your co-workers are also not friends. Quitting because a co-worker got fired (to me) says that you're too personally attached to your work.
exactly...
@MichaelHampton Not judging, just pointing that out. I'll forward the advice on to your 19 year-old self, I guess. What's your 19 year-old self's email address?
seems noble, but NOBODY CARES
17:44
I'm not saying that it's not good to be involved and be friendly and amicable with people in your team, but "friend" is a different animal from "coworker"
@HopelessN00b Email? HAHAHHAHAHA
Yes, if you can't compartmentalize work relationships from personal relationships then you're in for a bad day.
@ScottPack You wouldn't leave a job over ethical issues in the workplace?
@Magellan I never said that.
@Magellan I wouldn't call firing someone from a team that fucked up enough to warrant a termination unethical
17:45
@Magellan I'd like to think that I would. I've never been tested, though.
But, of course, we weren't given all of the details
@MDMarra Yes, but shouldn't it be the person who fucked up?
@Magellan This doesn't sound like an ethical issue. It is just a crappy management issue.
@ScottPack BTDT, kinda glad I passed the test even if it sucked.
@Zoredache Heh. I've left several jobs over that.
@MichaelHampton The guy that asked said that it was "the whole team's" fault - you can't just dismiss an entire operations team. But - again - we don't have all of the info
17:46
Right, it's been my experience that if a whole team is responsible for a fuckup and a single person was chosen to be fired then that person probably already had it coming.
@Zoredache Agreed. And crappy management is certainly a good reason to leave... but probably not if finding another job to leave for would be hard.
Now if one person is to blame and another is fired, then that's skeezy and warrants a deeper look.
@ScottPack and if it was the whole team's fault, the manager probably should've been fired for not managing worth a tinker's damn.
yeah, sounds like a bad environment
@Magellan Probably so, but that doesn't make it an ethical issue either.
17:47
@Magellan It is certainly a reason to start looking for new jobs asap. But I wouldn't quit the same day the other guy was fired just for a dramatic gesture.
If you're leaving because of how management chose to handle the termination, then fine - do interviews, give your two weeks, and tell your story in the exit interview if you feel that strongly. If you quit on the spot it's probably not going to benefit you in any way ever.
@Zoredache knows what's up
Ragequitting is a great way to put yourself in an unemployment lurch and burn a bunch of bridges.
@Zoredache wut? I didn't see that part. Well, being 19 will do that too.
Even if you don't want your manager's reference you don't know what type of professional contacts they have and how it might bite you later.

17:49
@Magellan I may be making some assumptions. But that is what it seemed like he was planning on doing.
See. That's the problem with alcohol prohibition. Sitting down and thinking about it and drinking a 6 pack would make it much clearer.
@Zoredache Aye. And usually 2^n sides to every story.
@Zoredache Dramatic gestures are useful for drama queens, but not so much for the rest of us, IME.
@Magellan Where n = x*y where x = number of people involved and y = number of social links between people involved?
@Achu You need to do what is right for you. Take care of yourself first. In your situation, I'd probably explain to management that firing this other person over this will result in you not feeling comfortable working there and explain why. But remember, YOU FIRST. Nobody else is going to put you first.
@HopelessN00b Meh. Having a wild youth helps one eventually settle down later by establishing a nice clear delineation.
@ScottPack Stop it with the Math. It's too early for that.
17:52
It's 1pm, you west coast savage!
@Achu I would also recommend starting a job search as well. If you disagree with management this strongly then it's probably time to leave, plus if they're as petty as you seem to imply then telling them you disagree may result in a rather short tenure for you.
@MDMarra Ok. let's do the timezone math. Hmm. That means I work until 3am EST nowadays.
It's not bad. It's usually dark here all winter anyway, and light 18 hours/day in the summer.
@Magellan No, that's a horrible idea. Why would anyone want to settle down?
17:55
@HopelessN00b dude. I have 3.72 children. I better have settled down a little bit.
These are great

Sorry guys i'm busy reading all comments. @MikeyB Thank you very much! I will try my best to convince the management. Before talking to management i will consider what @ScottPack says. The consequence of talking the management. @ScottPack You gave me a very nice advice. Thank you!
@Magellan I might have 3.72 children too... I don't see why I should settle down just because I might have kids out there somewhere. :p
Guys, Thank you so much!!! you make me to think the other way arround.
THANK YOU!
@Achu good luck
17:56
@Achu Yeah. And be aware that talking with management may end up with you leaving right away involuntarily.
Yeah! i'm aware now.
Thanks
@Magellan Of course, if it's so bad that management will fire you for raising a concern... fuck that place anyway.
@HopelessN00b The 2nd two are due to arrive in 5 weeks. Very exciting and a little scary.
@Achu Not sure if anyone's pointed it out, but there may be OTHER REASONS this other person is getting fired which you don't know about.
So a random drive-by just sparked an interesting conversation and took the given advice? Where the fuck am I and what happened to the Comms Room!?
4
17:57
@HopelessN00b yep. BTDT too. Left that place too.
@Tanner Crazy, Yo!
@Magellan Eeep. Well, good luck. Personally, I have no interest in having kids, so I'm just pretty useless when it comes to that whole part of life.
