I replied saying, yeah looks good. Was that job posted on $x date? Yeah? Well I did apply, and i was hired. I'd say the position has been filled.
In my last job hunt, I was contacted for a 6 week temp office assistant position that paid $8/h to file papers.
So, there's that.
Noice.
Lasagna for Lunch. <3
Lasagna at 8am?!
@MDMarra ooh, you're in for the big bucks now!
13:04
@MDMarra I'm in GMT ;)
Never heard of it
Isn't that like EST+5 or some such?
My school seems to have fucked up my graduation
is that eastern standard time, or eastern daylight time?
They apparently don't seem to realise I have an elective, and say I haven't met the graduation criteria
13:05
JUST JOKING PEOPLE
@MDMarra it's civilization standard time
@DennisKaarsemaker: thats GMT ;p
I get annoyed with the whole "standard" time only being in use for 4 months of the year.
Oh, I know CST. That's one hour behind me!
@JourneymanGeek that's what we were talking about :)
@MDMarra you're saying the midwest is civilization?
13:07
I don't really understand what Midwest means. Why does it include Ohio?
@ScottPack I think it's more a mindset than geography
@ScottPack does it ?
@Iain Exactly.
I duuno I live in the North West but there is more UK North of me than South
@Iain but is there more england north of you?
13:10
@Iain I thought the ocean was north of you?
@DennisKaarsemaker No, but Scotland is UK too and is often referred to as the far North
@ScottPack The Irish sea is directly north till it hits southern Scotland
I had forgotten how cocked the island is.

@Iain And will be very interesting if they get independence, and they'll have to get a Visa to enter England.

I wonder if they'll still continue to print their own currency.
13:20
@TomO'Connor we'll see later this year I guess
@Iain I'm amused by the assumption that they'll keep all their rights, like being in NATO, and the Schengen agreement, and so on.

@PatoSáinz That could make sense depending on your vertical.

@tombull89 I'd like to see Pornhub etc do a tech AMA
how do you scale, etc.
This looks interesting.
@TomO'Connor yeah, something like the 60th busiest site globally must have some major hardware
my brain hurts
13:52
@MDMarra Cool, let me know if you need any input afterwards, but "not in the right store" is just not enough to make a reasonable response :P
Of course not haha
I'm assuming either device certs are going to the user store, or certs are going into the intermediate store instead of the personal store
Now it's a race against time to see if I can finish this bowl of cereal in the next 6 minutes
Just relax the gag reflex and let flow down, just like in college.

@MDMarra Coming to BBC 1 and BBC America Summer 2014: The many exciting adventures of Mark D. Marra. Episode one: Mark speed-eats breakfast. Episode 2: Mark overclocks his smartphone. Episode 3: Mark videos his cats.
Thanks Comms room
@tombull89 Well, coming to BBC 1 in Summer 2014 and BBC America Winter 2018.
14:22
@MathiasR.Jessen ok, so they're saying that a cert shows up in AD in the user object, but not in the Personal store
That doesn't make sense, right?
/cc @RyanRies
<- Had to look up what AMA was. Apparently I need to get out on social media more.
@TheCleaner It's just Reddit, don't worry about it.
Configuring a bunch of Dell switches...wheee
@tombull89 they mention that they have 50 servers in the AMA. But it wasn't very clear if they have 50 servers or 50 server classes
You guys act like running a pr0n site is impressive!!!
14:37
@ScottPack I never go to reddit.
@ewwhite I had to fix a supermicro server today
@MDMarra Do you know what kind of cert/templates? EFS, web browser, signing?
apparently supermicro doesn't care about checking the RAM population
@pauska they prefer GOAT instead?
I have no idea what they prefer
14:47
@MDMarra "A" cert? Is it the right cert? Or is it an old one? Whether a certificate public key is published to AD or not is an option configurable in the certificate template, but if the user successfully enrolled in a cert it should always at least end up in one of their certificate stores, depending on the kind of cert it is
@pauska how was it?
@MathiasR.Jessen user auth
@RyanRies that's what I was saying
But they insist that their user auth certs only show up in AD and they dont show up in the personal store until they delete them from AD
My response is "You've got someone tinkering that doesnt know what they're doing"
Really sounds like it
I assume they got a cert from the user auth template we made somehow, it got published to AD, then they deleted it from the local computer store and not from AD and are trying to re-enroll but it won't because there's a cert issued from the same template that's still valid in AD
do people just not publish the cert to AD?
mornin gents
14:57
I assumed that you wanted to publish all certs to AD and check the box to not allow duplicate certs, so that you dont end up with users getting new certs every time they log in
We've got auto-enrollment, AD publishing, and private key retention (only for certain types of certs).

Q: Does Galera Arbitrator require a SST?

ChrilleDoes Galera Arbitrator require a SST? It says it's stateless but it's not clear if a SST i required. The reason for asking is that I'm having a large database and would like to skip the SST if possible.

Morning
@ChrisS That's pretty standard right? Publish to AD, don't allow duplicates if one exists in AD?
15:07
Yes, that makes it nice and easy... users and computers end up reenrolling in duplicate certificates if you don't check that box
@MDMarra I thought so.
@TomO'Connor what did I just read?
I have no idea.
15:30
Retaining all network flows is actually a great policy depending on how you do it (if it's reasonable on your companies budget, level of detail you retain, and for how long). I recommend looking into Riverbed Shark appliances. This is great for troubleshooting issues and doing NBA (network baseline analysis) for security reasons. — Ormis 5 mins ago
Logging all network traffic is a great policy?
@MDMarra If you're the NSA
lol
depends on your threat profile. There's such a thing as TOO MUCH information tho
@TomO'Connor I'm stealing that
@MDMarra So are they.
15:34
@MDMarra It depends on what you want to use them for.
It's impractical unless you're tiny or have a 40GB backbone
Remember, this guy isn't talking about ingress/egress, he wants all routed traffic
Which to me says "internal" as well
Keeping all the logs so that you have them is silly. Collecting flow traffic for incident response, capacity planning, troubleshooting, etc, is pretty reasonable. You want to make sure to set up and enforce a retention policy.
Flow traffic is also very different from packet captures.
Flow data tends to be not terribly huge.
Oh definitely, but the OP was asking about how to use wireshark to get everything his router does
Ah, I should probably go look at that. I have some experience with it.
Anywhere with any decent network device monitoring is going to have per-port flow trends
15:38
Those are pretty fantastic to have available, for much the same reasons, but you need to be very careful with access control and retention.
> I have installled wireshark on my server but can only monitor traffic through the local nic but all network traffic does not go through the server. I would like to monitor all network traffic.
It's also worth mentioning that any record you keep is available for court orders.
no good ideas but two approaches here:

1. Create a duplicate template (and verify that the issue persists with the duplicate), but check "Prompt user during enrollment". This should yield an info dialog (on success) or a warning (on enrollment failure) at logon when enrollment occurs.
2. If nothing happens, enable informational AutoEnrollment logging on the client and try again
yeah
I'll queueueueueueue up that to review later. I need to get some things done and don't want to think about it right now.
15:39
@MDMarra Somebody read a magazine article....
@MathiasR.Jessen Customer has an internet outage (hilarious as they're a MAJOR food vendor) so I'm in a holding pattern
Also make sure your retention schedule is documented and adhered to.
@MDMarra lol
I must admit, being employed by a major ISP has it's merits
"Internet outage? No way, we're still here"

Son of a bitch. I thought I had a meeting free day!
@TomO'Connor Give me a call when you figure it out
15:45
@TomO'Connor no idea, I have the same issue.
On one hand, this PM's mom just died and she had to fly back to the UK to handle it during the holidays. But on the other hand, she sent out an email to a customer with no webex link in it three different times, then never sent me the invite, then asked one of my engineers why he didn't configure something that she never scheduled him to configure.
I might have to start headbutting people
@MDMarra Sounds about right for a PM.
@cole Like, I have all these playbooks in my head for how to deal with various sysadmin crises, but I can't write them down. I just seem to have become semi-autonomous on these things. I dunno. Blah.
Dreamhost is very slow.
@TomO'Connor Oh I know. My boss has asked me to document a lot of the stuff I do...most of it I can't.
15:48
@ewwhite he inserted the ram in the wrong slots.. the system wouldn't even post (instant reset once the supermicro bios logo popped up)
and a hole lot of fun stuff.. two degraded raid arrays and god knows what
@cole Oh, you open a text editor and type things out.
@ScottPack I don't know how to do that!
=fgajdslk;fdsakl;fdsa
@cole It sounds lame or lazy, but I hear ya, have the exact same problem
@Tanner You mostly deal with Windows right? You forgot the "reboot" step.
15:51
encountered another "funny" situation on the same server
he upgraded from 32GB to 64GB of RAM, with ESXi 5.1 installed.. BLAM - YO NO GET VM POWER ONS
broke it...
the 5.1 license only permits 32GB of physical ram.. off to upgrade to 5.5
did that, and then one of the vms were upgraded from vmx09 to vmx10
tried to edit settings on the vm and get the "Must be managed through web client"
only there isn't a web client for the free esxi
nice move vmware, nice move...
@pauska Wait. So it doesn't just carve out the overage as unusable, it prevents VM startups?

2. Mallets and hammers in different sizes

What do you people use for diagramming rack layouts these days? Is it still Visio?
4 DCs using KMS keys confirmed.
@ScottPack Visio 2003... haven't found anything better.
@ScottPack Yup.
I'm just going to go curl up in a ball over here.
@cole ... that's a problem?
16:01
@MikeyB yes.
@cole Do tell.
@cole Lemme guess. That gets fixed by re-creating new DCs and blowing up the old ones?
@MikeyB KMS keys are to be used IF the server is going to be a KMS server.
@Magellan they're going to get migrated to 2008 R2 - 2012/R2 soon anyways but still.
@MikeyB @TomO'Connor Any good tips or tricks that would be worth sharing? I'm only doing one rack right now, but I want it to be at least something approaching right.
@ScottPack Visio 2010 (although I personally don't)
16:03
@cole KMS keys shouldn't be used if the server is going to be a KMS host?
@MikeyB no they should be used only if the server is going to be a KMS server
I'll just be using whatever the most recent version of Visio is. I don't futz with Office often enough to remember.
G'morning @Jeff
@ScottPack Good morning!
@ScottPack yep, the entire esxi stops
@pauska That's pretty fantastic.
16:05
Other issue is - we're currently going through an MS audit.
@cole So a DC can only be a KMS client if it's also a KMS host?
@MikeyB You don't use a KMS key at all if your client is going to use KMS.
THIS IS SO HARD TO EXPLAIN PROPERLY
Basically - don't use the KMS key in your VL Portal for anything other than a server that will be a KMS server.
If you want a client to use KMS - you do not need to do any additional config.
@cole Ahhh right, terms. I was thinking the GVLK was the KMS key - right right. Don't put the KMS key on anything that won't actually be a KMS host, right :)
@MikeyB but here - they've put it on 4 DCs
The desktop manager tried to do his laptop roll our (1500 PCs) using the Win7 KMS key.
Weeee my man juice was delivered.
If anyone approved this answer, they weren't paying attention.

@Magellan word.
@cole Breakups like that are often the best thing. You know it's not right if you feel relaxed. (after)
@TomO'Connor definitely, I didn't want to have to do it like this - hate being an asshole, but I have to do what's best for me. I know she's going to be crushed :/
@cole why is that?
16:30
@DanilaLadner she flipped out on me on Sunday - then Monday we talked a bit via text, Tuesday barely at all - finally she was like "are we ok?" I replied "I don't know". All hell broke loose. Passive aggressive FB posts and all.

@JourneymanGeek And that's one of the reasons I'd never work for family, nor would I work for a family business again. Intentionally breaking other people's stuff is an professional ethical violation. And those insular organizations tend to not even be able to parse such a concept.

Do you all find yourself pruning your Google search results by date nowadays?
Anonymous
@ewwhite yes
17:20
E.g. I search for something like "VMware svmotion" and I end up with a lot of results from 2009-2011.
thats a shitty search
@MDMarra first think I could think of...
That's like saying you aren't getting good results for KFC locations, but your search term was chicken
:)
but SAN research, VMware anything... And a few other things
Anyway, the question remains... do you find you have to prune your results often?
@ewwhite Yeah, tech info tends to go out of date fairly quickly.

@voretaq7 someone killed it?
@MDMarra it had 3 close votes so I clopened it to clear them
I'm guessing before your edit it was a crappy question
1. I'm getting the PoA - family stuff, nothing of "significant" value
2. Misappropriating assets under PoA is a felony in MI.. so.. NO SOUP FOR YOU!
