@Magellan ...do you get the Jewish holidays as a trade?
It's not an answer to my question. It's a generic statement that avoids addressing the question "How do I expand a RAID drive?" in every way and could be posted as a snarky comment on nearly every question on this site. It's not helpful or useful in any way. It doesn't address a single piece of information in my carefully worded, detailed, specific question. In fact, it damages my question because a question with an answer is less likely to be viewed by others that might try to offer real solutions. — HighTechGeek 4 mins ago
This guy's getting really upset that I won't delete my answer so that his question has 0 answers
Apparently 0 answers = more likely to be viewed now
@Wesley yeah, I'm the director of IT now. How about them apples?
@tombull89 Yeah, he's a bit of dumbass. But the seller is also a major dick.

Q: Include vote count in Achievements drop down

WardVarious SE staff have said the hover popup is not coming back and have suggested "make a case for putting that information somewhere else." Ok, here are some thoughts and suggestions: Loss of the hover popup was the highest-voted complaint about the new top bar when it was tested on meta. Vo...

18:02
@tombull89 I'm going to go with this guy is an idiot. I highly doubt the console was for his 4 year old.
@PeterGrace YO!
yo ho ho and a bottle o' rum
@PeterGrace Wow that's awesome. I'm putting out there for a job... need a remote IT wonk? =P
how's it goin @mdmarra?
Not bad, man. Not bad at all
18:03
@Wesley you wanna do desktop support?
Still in beautiful Pottstown?
@Mdmarra yessir, I am
@PeterGrace congrats!
We should get together one of these days
beautiful is an interesting word for Pottstown :)
18:03
Get a drink at the Limerick Ale House or something
@cole thank ya!
What the fuck is this?
To clarify once again, I deleted the question because I read the discussions with regards to the explicit meta of this site. I see the value of having said explicit meta, and the value the major contributers get from it or the efforts of said contributers. I dont really have the motivation to discuss the abstract paradigms of system administration or see the point of doing so. It's entirely possible that the paradigm you specify is entirely correct. — MetaChrome 19 mins ago
@MDMarra I have yet to check out the craft ale house
I hear it's good though!
@ScottPack brb getting popcorn
The food selection is a little thin, but it's always quality
18:05
@ScottPack What it is: wank wank wank wank oh yeah people are reading my meta posts wank wank wank wank
@PeterGrace ...no. =(
@MikeyB wank
kce
kce
@ScottPack - How the heck to folks still not understand the distinction between Moderators and users VTC-ing? You think after 600 rep points he'd get that.
I will likely be hiring for additional IT staff, but not sure what SRE's doing
@PeterGrace holla 'atcha boy.
not full time desktop-support, still project work but will be some tickets/desktop
18:06
@PeterGrace Would those people have to work for Bart? That sounds terrible.
Oh wait desktop NOPENOPENOPE
@ScottPack No, they'd work for me with Bart.
:)
@PeterGrace "You poor bastard"
I sell our people short a bit -- we get like 2-3 tickets a day with 60+ salespeople. Our environment is pretty nicely laid out.
@PeterGrace See how nice it is when you hire sales people who know what a computer is? :)
I bet some of your sales people even have 3-button mice.
18:08
When you see that TomTom has replied to one of your answers, you get a simultaneous feeling of wonder and terror.
12
our hiring process is pretty rigorous, even for salespeople
It's unique
@PeterGrace Oh good. Because Bart already got himself one intern and that seems like more than enough
@MDMarra s/answers/questions/ must be interesting
Oh god
18:09
Does anyone know of a replacement for Google's Timeline feature? Sometimes I really miss that.
TomTom agreed with @MDMarra
He agreed?
AND HE EVEN USED A SMILEY-WINKY FACE
Surely you mean argued.
@MDMarra BROKE TOMTOM
18:10
Damn autocorrect, I know.
@cole Turn Left...Turn Left...Turn Left...
Fuck before you know if - @Wesley is going to have a bike and I'll have a job I don't hate. Way to go @MDMarra - disturbing the natural order of shit.
@mikeyb you work for discourse now right?
@PeterGrace Yep, I'm doing about 10h/week with Discourse
18:11
@ScottPack One can never have too many interns!
@MikeyB Nifty, how's that working out for you?
@Wesley just forwarded you a job that was sent to me in AZ.
@cole Oh cool, thanks!
@Wesley no problem Windows/Linux/VMware jerb
@PeterGrace Pretty well - they are all awesome guys and it's been a great learning experience for managing a type of system like that and working directly with the devs to maintain a rapid deployment environment. Also documentation, end user support, remote skills, so handy.
so remote. so devops. so handy. what code.

18:13
@MikeyB wow
I <3 doge
@Wesley To answer your earlier question, basically, I live in a reality in which I don't need to worry about how much money I earn via consulting, due to my faculty role at the college. It's a pretty decent arrangement, because I can limit myself to consulting work that I actually like, and I can bill whatever I want (if they don't want to pay me, I don't need the gig anyway).
Wait, you teach too?
@MikeyB Hah, I'm running discourse for my minecraft server community, forum.blocktown.org -- it's been pretty "set it and forget it" which I dig.
@Wesley HALP!
@Skyhawk I should really get a Ph.D so I could go tenure-track faculty
18:15
I don't think I could teach, because I don't think anyone would listen to me/take my seriously. That's why I don't think I'll ever be in management.
Unfortunately I'm too ADD to do Ph.D level research in...well pretty much anything
but I could do undergrad/graduate level research in a lot of things! :)
@voretaq7 y u no hyperfocus?
Because that's why.
(yes I'm blaming YouTube)
@MDMarra Yeah, at least until June I'm full-time faculty in a local vocational/technical program. This afternoon there's an instructional council meeting where I'll get to see what happens to my recent proposal, which basically is to realign the entire program to industry-relevant objectives and ensure that students get actual certifications as a result of taking courses.
@voretaq7 You don't need a Ph.D. for that.
@wesley I have uploaded your santa hat.
18:17
@voretaq7 Unless you want to be in a university setting.
@voretaq7 did you see my ping earlier about that postgres question and the angry lecture you gave?
@Skyhawk Oh nice, I didn't know entirely how that all worked out with you.
@Skyhawk Nice
@PeterGrace So santa.
And that pays well enough to not have to worry about $$?
18:18
much fluff
Now @PeterGrace you just have to tell @Skyhawk to put his on.
@MDMarra oohhhh bomgar is here
@voretaq7 If you just want to be tenure-track faculty somewhere, you'll find that all you need is expertise, the ability to teach, and the willingness to accept the level of compensation in the faculty union contract. You don't even need a master's degree at a lot of 2-year institutions...
@Skyhawk put your hat on.
@MikeyB GET A CERTIFICATE AND THEN PLUG THAT BITCH IN
18:18
@voretaq7 Had another disucssion last week with someone over whether taking Adderol should be cheating, like Steroids are in Sports.
Obligation: fulfilled
I stopped taking Adderol, and any ADD meds.
@cole And now you're feeling much OH MY GOD IS THAT A SQUIRREL?
much meditating. such help. very focus. wow.
@Skyhawk True. I applied to teach at a vocational/tech school after college. Their requirements were 15 semester credit hours worth of classes in the subject. /cc @voretaq7
18:20
@MDMarra My life is set up so that I don't have a lot of monthly payments.
nice
@Skyhawk I'd like to get to that point.
@Skyhawk you're basically the zen master of IT then
Sounds awesome
@ScottPack @Skyhawk Yeah I could get tenured at Nassau Community College easily enough. But they don't pay well :P
@cole Just do it. Don't buy anything on credit, ever again. Easy.
18:21
@Skyhawk getting there! I've cut my monthly expenses down $1000+/month
Hofstra requires a masters for assistant professor, and Ph.D for full professor. I think associate professor is open with a masters and published work.
@cole Now cut them down to $1000/month :-)
From ~$3600 to ~$2500
@Skyhawk working on it - student loans :( $500 month alone is student loan payments
I should get a degree.
@Skyhawk hah even I can't manage that
@Skyhawk I don't even want to think what my monthly is. Mortgage alone is $1500/mo, property tax $250 or so, ...
18:22
my fixed monthly expenses are around 1750-2000/month
@voretaq7 That's pretty amazing, considering where you live.
@voretaq7 wow.
As much as I hate my neighbors, my rent is so cheap.
@voretaq7 And considering how much you earn. Perhaps you are are the true Zen master.
@Skyhawk that's also "bare essentials" (the things I have to pay every month, food, and half a tank of gas - no going out, no bottle of scotch, nothing)
18:24
In reality I probably spend.... hmm....
<does math>
My monthly budget
@MDMarra nice! bank?
@MDMarra ohh you went over your shopping limited
I will note that the 1k/month is for the wife's student loan replayment and I pay 100% of rent and utilities
@cole christmas presents :(
@MikeyB mint.com actually
@MDMarra I feel you, just joshin ya
18:25
It ties into bank and cc info and auto-categorizes purchases
I'd show you my budget but it's sad
I don't enter a single transaction into it
looks like $3000 / month on average
Definitely need to get some side hustle to pay shit off quicker.
@voretaq7 So, you're basically at Jedi level.
@voretaq7 Unless I'm wrong in guessing that $3000/month represents far less than half of your income.
18:26
$80 for pets - wat? @MDMarra
@Skyhawk most of it is disposing of my disposable income - how much do I fly, how many nights do I order sushi instead of cooking, etc.
@cole Hamsters.
some months I spend basically everything I earn. Other months I'm banking about half my salary
@voretaq7 how the shit
@Skyhawk not "far" less, but less
18:28
@mdmarra heh. Ex tried to get me to pay her last student loan when we split because she'd refi'd it twice. Duh. Nope.
@Magellan lol
@cole Cat food and nail trimming
Bro's food is ~$36/case on Amazon subscribe and save
I tried setting up a budget in Mint but I have to do different things for bills
@MDMarra the shit
He has some kitty health issues
18:28
Ahh ok
He's cute though :)
So he eats wellness brand chicken and lobster
Oh, that's good stuff.
like, my car payment is a transfer to another account (checking) so I can pay it. And, I split rent, but since I collect the money to pay it all goes into my account
It's basically the only thing that doesnt make him puke after. Anything with grains or beef and he barfs
Yeah jeez - brocat here get MeowMix and Friskies wet food
18:29
Wellness is grain free
He's fat and happy. My brocat is a big cat, too.
@Magellan Wow
2.5 hours to go - I can do this
@Skyhawk I also have $500ish per paycheck that gets skimmed away to various savings accounts before I even see it.
@Magellan she's putting $600 on hers each month and I put 1k on them. They should be paid off in 14ish months I think
Just in time for her to abandon her education to make babies
sigh
18:31
Doh
@MDMarra Tell her she has to bank the first year of college tuition before she can have one of those.
ha
yeah right, she's a librarian
My girlfriend has about $30K I think in student loans - she makes $16.50/hr.
Babies are like kittens. They grow up to be unpleasant resource drains.
The ROI on a MLIS degree is pitiful
18:32
@cole What, is she a Millennial?
@MDMarra ...so then by that standard the'll never have babies :)
@Skyhawk 24, went to 3 different colleges...now is a dental assistant.
Her two undergrad degrees are paid off for the most part. It's just her grad loans
@voretaq7 I'm at $3900, but that's with 1/3 of it being child support. will see if I've got enough to swing a single income and let Lady stay home with the twins.
@MDMarra actually if you have a BIG law firm in your area they sometimes take on a staff librarian
18:32
She's a youth librarian
@MDMarra lawyers are like spoiled children - sounds like a good fit to me! :)
She does story times and reads YA fic
haha
@Skyhawk You missed my rant earlier about her money situation...it's sad and frightening.
@MDMarra can she read case summaries to the junior associates in the story time voice?
18:33
@MDMarra I know a guy who's a youth librarian, and it didn't stop him from taking a job at a certain "urban" for-profit college for a few years.
so much red <.< >.>
$400 for shopping?!
Sadly, I need to buy a minivan this month. I hate financing stuff.
@NathanC Um, why is your mortgage and rent category blown up like that?
@Magellan What, and forsake a perfectly good Subaru?
@cole It flags Walmart as "shopping" which is where I do most of my groceries...
18:34
Ah well go in and edit the transactions :)
@Skyhawk I live with roommates who contribute to the rent, but they give the rent to me and I pay the entire amount
@NathanC I don't have a gas budget. When I travel for work I get reimbursed 56.5 center per mile and when I drive outside of work it never outpaces my mileage reimbursement from work
I can't figure out how to tell Mint that =/
@NathanC split the transaction
then hide the other part of the transaction from mint
Also, shopping ballooned way over my budget because of christmas lol
18:35
fucking Christmas.
@NathanC It boggles my mind to imagine that Walmart might sell things that one actually would desire to eat. That's how much of a West Coast food snob I am. Well, and my medical issues with the grains, like @MDMarra's cat.
I hate Christmas.
@NathanC Split everything but 400 and categorize the 2nd half of the split to "Exclude from Mint" I believe
and it carries to the next month
@Skyhawk. Keeping that. Ditching my ratty 96 Explorer that's getting bit rot in its electronics and gets 11mpg.
18:36
@Skyhawk Celiacs? Or just a gluten allergy?
@MDMarra I'll try it. I'd love to use Mint more instead of my crappy spreadsheet :P
@Magellan My family happens to know a thing or two about old Explorers, because my mother still owns the '91 in which I learned to drive. Be ready to do the entire engine and transmission wiring harnesses within 3-5 years. Oh, and Ford doesn't make those parts anymore, so they have to be refurbished by hand.
@MDMarra I AM in NY... So what was I supposed to do with a gyros and @voretaq7?
@cole have you considered simple.com?
@ewwhite Just kinda crush one down his windpipe
18:37
"a gyros"
Wouldn't that be "a gyro"?
that worked...now to tweak some things...
@MDMarra That's mean.
@MDMarra I don't LITERALLY inhale my food!
@skyhawk not worth it. It's reporting bad fuel pump voltage, bad mass air sensor, and bad o2 sensor already. Time to donate it and have it crushed.
18:38
@pauska In NY, it's would be a gyro. In Chicago, it's gyros.
@ewwhite Isn't gyros plural?
Bought it for 2k 3 years ago.
gyros == jeer-roas
Chicago, where the real greeks are.
@ewwhite really?
@Magellan Likely so. What kind of Subaru are you getting rid of?
18:39
Everyone knows it's pronounced year-ohs
@Magellan plus it's a ford... shoulda been crushed 22 years ago!
Or "year-rows"
Go here and either upvote me or comment to leave the poor guy alone...thanks:

@MDMarra In NYC, it's gyro, like "gyroscope"
Ohhhh @ewwhite:
"Great news: You can now place sunrise orders through OpenSRS for 14 new domain extensions, including .BIKE, .GURU and .PHOTOGRAPHY. You can also register trademarks in the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH)."
18:40
maui.bike
Hmm...
@MDMarra Or like "speculum"
@ewwhite It's a greek word. I'm not sure the location changes the pronunciation, just the willingness/ability of the local people to use the proper pronunciation.
Its been a decent truck. Motor is hella strong and worth rebuilding. Electrical are letting it down.
@ewwhite isnt it pronounced euro?
@MDMarra In NY, it's a singular... Elsewhere it's more greek-like.
@voretaq7 Looking at it.
18:41
@Magellan Sure it's not German?
ooh, new mustang
must rent one during teched
@pauska you'll regret it
Heh. No. Its drive and transmission are no.
There we go...much less red now.
I rented one few years back, had a blast on the motorways
18:42
@Magellan You're right about that. With clean oil and a light foot that engine's good for more than 300K miles, just like a Subaru, but without the mid-life head gasket failure.
S/no/just fine/
but it seems like there is an europeean version of it now, which looks a bit different?
@voretaq7 ok bit the bullet and signed up for Simple.
@Skyhawk yeah. May wait a couple months. Or just keep it to work on it.
i'm weird like that
@pauska Good. You can pick me up at my hotel which will probably be 100 miles away at this point
18:44
@MDMarra I told you so douchebag
we found a downtown hotel on hotwire.com - try it
Recruiter "I have two Desktop Support roles - one in Boston, and the other in Marlborough. If you're interested feel free to reach out!"
Um wat
@pauska Not booking anyhting yet
I told my practice director, he said the budget for 2014 hasnt been approved yet so he can't do book it yet
@MDMarra they look pretty nifty, I'm sure as hell going to have to go over their TOS to see what data they're collecting.
haha
they collect a lot, it's how they work
They show you targeted ads based on your purchases, etc
Definitely not for the "privacy minded" but apparently they work with banks to use a "read only" API so that if your mint gets compromised, your accounts arent
supposedly
@MDMarra Well, my dad was celiac. I've never been tested, just developed a ton of symptoms and stopped eating gluten and got better.
18:49
fair enough
@MDMarra Which, according to my doctor, is plenty sufficient evidence. To get tested I'd need to go on a "challenge diet" which would basically mean that I'd need to be within 30 feet of a toilet for 2 weeks.
@Skyhawk that's baaaasically the diagnostic criteria :)
@Skyhawk sounds fun!
@voretaq7 I sure think so. Right? Right.
just move a desk and computer in there
18:50
Income:$2,000
Spending:-$1,500
Goals:-$500
Left over:$0
boom!
unless you need the medical diagnosis for something ridiculous that's basically how most MDs determine if you have Celiac disease
"Quit eating things that have gluten in them."
...a month later...
"You feel better? Good. You're celiac. Never eat gluten again."
@voretaq7 I am not sure how much someone would have to pay me to eat wheat for that length of time, but it definitely would be combat pay.
they have gluten free pizza here now
I want to know how that works
heh
Income:$2000
Gasoline:$150
Wife:$1850
Me: $ :-(
@voretaq7 Since the placebo effect doesn't exist, you know.
18:52
@voretaq7 Depends on the pizza. Out here, there's a place called Garlic Jim's that actually makes decent GF crusts.
@voretaq7 A lot of places just pull one out of the freezer.
@MDMarra "Same security levels as banks" PSHAW. My WoW account had and my gmail account has more security on it than my bank account does.
@Skyhawk I'm just wondering how you toss dough without gluten to act as an elastic/binding agent
heh...
I was adding a new interface on our loadbalancers to do multicast HA checks on
@MikeyB "Same security as banks" -- OK so cross you off my list
2
@MikeyB But, if they're tying into banks, no need to go above and beyond banks
18:54
and entered 10.254.254.2 as an address
and it defaulted to a /8 bit mask
guess what happened to our 10.x traffic...
@pauska 10 is a class A network :)
@voretaq7 ...and then there's the question of how well they control for cross-contamination. I have learned not to order GF pasta in Italian restaurants because it turns out that pasta water gets reused like fryer oil, and bang.
@Skyhawk yup.
@voretaq7 (actually, I have learned not to visit Italian restaurants... or Italy.)
but that's like my one friend who is actually allergic to tomato (not "I don't like it" - "I swell up and turn blotchy purple") - it's amazing how many places just pick tomato off a premade sandwich
18:56
@voretaq7 cause people who use "class A" (doesn't exist) ususally use a 8bit netmask..
and she's like "No. I can. not. eat. that. I will have to go to the hos-pit-al."
@voretaq7 Xanthan gum is the typical substitute, and toss? On the West Coast, pizza restaurants do not hire tossers, unless they're restaurants called "Buca di Beppo."
@voretaq7 xantham gum, soy flour, nut flour, egg...
@pauska It exists in the hindbrain of every TCP/IP stack I've used -- specify a 10net address in *BSD and you get /8
@freiheit I don't really object to the xanthan gum, but soy flour? I don't need bigger boobs!
maybe it's some dumb outdated RFC that dictates this nonsense
18:57
@Skyhawk if you don't toss the crust it's not a pizza. Stupid west-coast people.
@pauska it is.
@voretaq7 there's various options for getting protein into a gluten-free flour. Soy or nut flours
@pauska windows does it too
@pauska Pretty much anything that populates a default netmask for you will put in 255.0.0.0 for <128, 255.255.0.0 for 128-191, and 255.255.255.0 for 192-223. It's not as though we're in a completely classless society.
@MDMarra I know
and it's ridicilous to even suggest something like that today
yup
agreed
18:58
btw hers my post on Reddit about the GF money situation: reddit.com/r/personalfinance/comments/1s3ert/…
@freiheit almond flour. because when I slip cyanide into the food I don't want people knowing. :-)
@pauska It's not dictated, they're legacy defaults that are just still around.
@cole Gluten-free money, yum!
