Terribly stupid
@MDMarra THey'd load up Skype once in awhile
@RyJones yeah it looks BLACK in the little jar but it's supposed to be the closest color they could find to cyan
i'd drive it down the stairs
I interviewed a dude over conference room skype through a speakerphone.
So you guys didnt have real video presence set up?
03:00
@voretaq7 seriously, use small little drops. use a syringe to mix little bits. potent stuff
I'll try toothpick-ing it into the gum media and see what happens - worst case it foams up when I add the sensitizer and my apartment turns into a 450 square foot blue slime mold (which would be pretty awesome)
the telepresence shit at amazon was always jacked up.
like high quality video/audio meeting rooms with cameras that track sound to display the current speaker, etc
@MDMarra Nope... webex acccount...
lol
ghetto
03:01
there were three conference rooms that were connected and wired up for telepresence.
so, story time, I worked for FXPal - Fuji-Xerox Parc
but someone obviously never finished.
@RyJones hmm, I do have 1ml syringes around here somewhere - if the toothpick doesn't work I can probably dilute it down in those
we had an office at Parc, and one in Tokyo. We each had a ring of cameras on the exterior of our buildings and walls of monitors in a conference room.
You could set the walls of the room to look like the exterior of either one
like you were sitting on the roof
@MDMarra And when didn't I describe ghetto things?
03:02
it was fucking boss
@RyJones nice
@ewwhite So you guys had all these big clients, yet you built your servers from spare parts with no warranty and were broke
@RyJones If you ha to travel from one site to the other did you spend 3 days in the conference room to adjust to the 12 hour time shift? :)
Have you considered that someone is syphoning money in large amounts?
@MDMarra Have you seen Ed's car?
03:04
"You're going to Japan, so we're going to lock you in this closet for a few days and fuck up your circadian rhythms so when you get there you'll actually be productive. Trust us, we're research scientists!"
@MDMarra Yes, I considered.
@voretaq7 dunno, I started the week before 9/11, and international travel was kind of off the radar after that
@RyJones Nonsense, there are perfectly fine cargo ships to sail on! :-)
Because when they couldn't afford for me to travel to NY for the rest of the year... that was a bad sign.
(considering I was never reimbursed...)
@ewwhite where are you usually based?
03:05
@ewwhite small claims court
@MDMarra and my HP vendor was owed ~$150k in 90+ day-late hardware payments.
@RyJones Chicago.
@ewwhite shit, shouldn't that flight be about $100 both ways?
@ewwhite when they go bankrupt you can make fun of them in here :)
@RyJones $200-$300.
it's the lodging... I paid about $2k per NY trip
it's not like shitsville, nebrohoma to fucktown, taxahassee
03:07
File in chicago if you can
They'll either have to fly a lawyer out or you'll get a default judgement
It'll be cheaper for them to pay you
@ewwhite 200-300 if you fly into LGA :P
@voretaq7 By then, they'll have their telepresence robots running the NOC.
@ewwhite ...needs hands.
@voretaq7 But then you have to be in LGA
actually no
03:08
@ScottPack Exactly
@voretaq7 I did that once.
Oh, I'm okay with LGA... I go straight to the admirals club.
"Don't worry, the runway overrun is nice soft water"
"Um, that's Flushing Bay. It'll dissolve the plane and everyone inside!"
@ewwhite The one and only time I've ever feared for my life in an aircraft was at LGA
you could have one set of robots pulling and moving rackmounts to a central workplace area and having a pair of robot arms with an electric screwdriver doing replacements ;p
Well, now my NY trips will be fun-filled and action-packed... I'll get to do all the stuff I never wanted to
Like...
The Lower East Side Tenement Museum, located at 97 Orchard Street in the Lower East Side neighborhood of Manhattan New York City, is a National Historic Site. The five-story brick tenement building was home to an estimated 7,000 people, from over 20 nations, between 1863 and 1935. The museum, which includes a visitors' center down the block, promotes tolerance and historical perspective on the immigrant experience. History The building at 97 Orchard Street was contracted by Prussian-born immigrant Lukas Glockner in 1863 and was modified several times to conform with the city's developing...
03:10
@ewwhite That's actually supposed to be pretty awesome.
but bear in mind I'm a museum geek
"If universal surveillance were the answer, lots of us would have moved to former East Germany. If surveillance cameras were the answer, camera-happy London, with something like 500,000 of them at a cost of $700 million, would be the safest city on the planet. We didn’t and it isn’t, because surveillance and surveillance cameras don’t make us safer." -- Bruce Schneier
@voretaq7 I've tried multiple times to go
@RyanRies Yeah, well.... he's a goddamn fucking terrorist. Peter King says so.
(of course if you ask peter king about ANYONE he says "they're a goddamn fucking terrorist" -- I think that's how lard-ass justifies his existence...)
@Magellan Potential fodder for your to serial abuse: serverfault.com/users/193694/jflory7
KILL!
@Wesley @Magellan has convinced me, so I VtC'd every single question from that guy!
03:18
@Ward Whoa I did too! We're like a gang!
We should make our own hand signals and everything.
#SysAdmin #GangSign t(-.-t)
That's lame.
I keep trying to think of new hand signals but they always just end up with .|..
@Ward Buy a bike asswad!
/preemptive
SIGSTOP -- Hand held up, palm facing out
SIGKILL -- stabbing motion with the right hand
SIGUSR1 -- "Bitchslap" motion with the left hand
SIGUSR2 -- "Bitchslap" motion with the right hand
@voretaq7 kill -9?
03:21
SIGSEGV -- Elbows on desk, face in hands. Muttering something about "Stupid fucking developers"
@Wesley Bad kitty!
yanno, this is a PERFECT application for a leapmotion controller ;p
@JourneymanGeek . . . are you drunk?
@voretaq7: not nearly enough, no
@voretaq7 Random thought: I do not understand people who think they're drinking alcohol but by some mistake aren't, and they start acting tipsy.
03:24
@JourneymanGeek I thought you were talking about a Leap Pad for a minute there
Have you ever seen that?
@Wesley Placebo Effect.
There was actually a study done on that
@voretaq7 Christmas paper tube to the head! That's for breaking up my train of thought.
@voretaq7: nope. I can see how giving developers devices that are appropriate to their mental age can only end in tears however
I can't find the study, but that's a BBC article ABOUT the study
@Wesley: your new robot overlord
@JourneymanGeek that Leap Motion thingy actually seems cool/
@voretaq7: it is
and not too expensive too
(and makes more sense than a touchscreen)
hahahaha
03:26
Hey! That lets you telecommute while not getting any of the benefits of!
@JourneymanGeek 90 bucks? Fuck, I might buy one!
My life's goal is now to be on the screen of one of those Segway bot things
@voretaq7 People are dumb.
...but I on't have a desktop :-/
@voretaq7: they work with laptops too
03:27
@Wesley yes. But we call it "the placebo effect" because it sounds nicer than saying "Y'all so stupid I could give you a glass of non-alcoholic piss water and tell you its Budweiser and you'd think you're drunk."
And I will drive into people's offices with my face on the iPad-like screen and just be like 'fuck you' and then slowly drive myself out
actually, iirc there's a few models coming out that have em built in
That is one of the dumbest things I've ever seen: vimeo.com/76096255
but my laptop has a multitouch track pad. And I usually use it on the couch or bed where gesture control is slightly impractical
Ooh, I have a Mac Mini hooked up to my TV
@voretaq7 Ya'll so stupid you couldn't pour water out of a boot if the instructions were printed on the heel.
And you'd probably drown yourself in the process.
03:28
I wonder if I could rig up a Leap Motion thing so I could control that without needing my bluetooth keyboard/mouse?
@Wesley I'm sorry, research subjects aren't allowed to have boots anymore. Not after the last batch strangled themselves trying to tie a bow in the laces...
We have these nice hospital-grade traction sock thingies though. They're super (un)comfortable
I'm sort of laughing my ass off thinking about this iPad taped onto a Segway
@RyanRies I'm laughing that someone is going to be making legit money off of that.
@RyanRies I'm laughing thinking about the ways it would get abused
If we could just incorporate teledildonics into that....
"UNPLUG ME" post-its on the back of the screen
Moustaches drawn on the front of the screen with dry-erase markers....
03:32
@voretaq7 Dildos.
Lots of dildos.
@Wesley . . . are you making a robot dickwolf?
@voretaq7 Well now that you gave me that idea...
The word 'teledildonics' has already been used too many times in chat tonight.
@RyanRies What, teledildonics?
Taking teledildonics into BUTTSCALE!!
facepalm
@Wesley Any new success or failure stories regarding the scheduler lately?
03:39
@RyanRies Nope - no one new has jumped on it, oddly.
I don't get it, but I don't care. Money in the bank, project done, I'm moving on.
HArdly worked with that guy this week.
focused on my Colorado office, a server migration, and a guy here in town that has a successful MSP that is using me for web work.
@RyanRies Actually, the guy in town is Chisholm
We might be working together more.
Good deal. Good to hear that you're moving along. That project sounds like it is not going to make a great deal of money for anyone involved to be honest.
@RyanRies EVery single radio station will need to be paywalled to make decent money, and he's now considering forcing the issue for the 2014/2015 sports season.
I can't imagine paying to listen to sports on the radio...
It's about time
though sirius xm seems to get a handful of people who will.
03:42
@FalconMomot It's rural market prep sports, so no where else to get it. Lots of people want to listen to their grandkids, or other family, play at their old school. Or just want to hear how their school is doing.
I was surprised, but the traffic is certainly there.
It's just the monetizing needs to be kicked into high gear.
The funny part is that the target market (i.e. 65+ years old) are probably the only people gullible enough to pay for radio.
People never cease to amaze me.
So it kinda' works out.
So this sports season will be about 300,000 unique people to the service. So far the conversion rate is decently high for the few stations that are paywalled.
But it's still hobby money.
But I do like that I was able to help those people be at home with their families instead of flipping switches late at night.
03:45
I think if everything was paywalled, it could legit turn into a half million dollars per year of recurring revenue.
@RyanRies Two letters: X. M.
I'm not sure subscribing to satellite radio is an indication of gulliability.
@FalconMomot At the prices they charge for it? I'm fairly certain it is
I could buy all the media I want for that monthly fee :)
@voretaq7 Naw, see, the new Kia my parents bought had Sirrius satellite, and they let the trial lapse. After like six months of pleading spam mail, they got it down to like $4.50 a month. Now that's not too bad.
it can be extremely nice while driving through remote areas, which I had a job doing for like 2 years
03:47
I dunno... I've never been a fan of XM or Sirius... I've rented a couple of cars for making road trips that had satellite radio... and there were still commercial ads in it? Why the fuck would I pay subscribe to your shit if you're still playing ads?
aah, in Canada none of the stations have ads except the american news.
@Wesley that would be an almost reasonable price for it - if I never had to hear a commercial.
@RyanRies Exactly.
That's what podcasts are for. I plug in my phone and listen to them in the car.
@ScottPack yup.
so it's really nice to have a commercial-free metal radio station, for instance, if I am bored of my ipod library and am on the road.
03:48
And the like $50/year I kick in to the various podcasts I listen to regularly - way cheaper than XM :)
@FalconMomot: that simply means you need a larger library ;p
not sure if it's worth $10 a month though.
heh
@JourneymanGeek <--- what he said @FalconMomot :-)
it's basically impossible to make it big enough
3
anyway
I must vanish
I have something like 5000 songs on my ipod
every so often on Shuffle it plays something and I'm like "Wait, I own that fucking song? When the fuck did I buy THAT?!"
03:50
@voretaq7 "buy"
@FalconMomot Nominee, best quote starred out of context, 2013
@Wesley ...most of it :-x
I realized recently that Richie Havens died just a few months ago, and that makes me sad. :(
@voretaq7 Celine Dion plays
@Wesley I....actually have no Celine Dion.
I'm a terrible gay man
@voretaq7 I'm a terrible straight man.
03:52
I think my music collection is slightly over 100gb
I have... um.... P!nk
and.... uhhhhhh
I have spotify so don't really own any music.
Tina Turner
I did buy all of Portisheads albums because I lurve them and want to show support.
All three.
What else...
Yeah... when it comes to the topic of women, it's funny how the majority of straight men actually end up being terrible at being straight men. >:|
03:53
Oh, almost all of Kate Rusby's albums.
Lurve.
gimme a moment while explorer SLOWLY counts all the files I have.
Massive Attack, The distance... some others that no one would know.
113 gb, 8531 files ;)
Yeah, Spotify saves me a lot of money. $10 a month and I'm good. I flip from Tennessee Ernie Ford to Dying Fetus to Primus to Michael Buble
Excuse me, Michael Bublé
Mike Bubble
03:55
boob-boo-leh.
@JourneymanGeek BOOBIES!
So I just tried to make an account at a website that shall remain nameless, and used the username :(){:|:&};: - something bad has just happened I think...
Shit I wasn't using my sock puppets either.
04:11
>_<
@ScottPack You shuttup!
Nighters, my little googlie bears.
ZZzzzz
G'night sweetums
05:15
G'day
@Wesley The last thing the world needs is more squirrel injections.
@Wesley Offspring... Social Distortion!
05:35
Going to be a chilly start to my ride today 10C and NE winds - how's the weather holding up in Vancouver @ward ?
@Iain If greater Seattle may speak for Vancouver: it's fantastic for this time of year. The rainclouds are invading in waves, but we're still getting some sunny days in the mix.
@MilesErickson 140 miles on the continental scale isn't that much so I guess it'll be similar :)

Hey @Cole
@dawud how goes it?

Q: Windows Server 2008 Suddenly can't connect internet

blaanimal threeI have searched though some people has similar problems but non like mine. My server is already setup properly and can connect to internet, and open a browser in the server and can browse any page (normal scenario) In last two weeks, two times suddenly the server unable to browse any page (usin...

Good god...
13:30
MY GOD
I'm cold with the window open but hot with it closed. First world problems.
@Cole Fan. Problem solved.
Or, open window halfway!
@NathanC yeah I did the halfway
then I was like MY LEGS ARE COLD

Q: Properly remove windows.old on Hyper-V Server 2012 R2

MikeBazI have installed Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 on a server that had Hyper-V Server 2012. When I did this, the standard Windows.old folder was created. I now would like to remove that folder safely. The standard way to do that with a full GUI would be to use Disk Cleanup, but of course I don't have that ...

I thought you could just...delete it.
Pants...>.>
13:32
@NathanC No pants before noon on the weekend.
However, I need to buy a new computer chair today. This one is killing my back
My floor is slightly slanted so my chair likes to move on its own lol
@NathanC that happens to me too
I slowly roll back
Chair, stahp!
So I may be putting on pants, before noon, to go to Staples
I made an omelet with bacon, cheese, and pepperoni. yum :3
I found this random omelet pan and thought I'd try it lol
13:37
I made an omelet with swiss cheese, green and red peppers, and ham
and sriracha
and then oatmeal with raisins and honey
mmm
I realized that eggs will last a surprisingly long time in the fridge. I had a carton in there for a good 3 weeks or so lol
So I have to buy Windows, since I misplaced my TechNet key
Do I buy Windows 7 or 8...decisions
Neither. You obtain it >.> <.<
I...don't trust that
On the phone with my sister, I'm laughing so hard I'm crying.
14:01
@Cole: I'd go with 8
if the start screen annoys you just get classic shell or start8
14:18
Or wait for 8.1 and be able to change it natively :P
IIRC 8 is cheaper
and I've been running with start screen, isn't too bad
14:42
Pretty sure my sister is the best person to get advice from
8 is cheaper
I like cheap
is your sister a computer person? ;p
today is 10/12/13
Using an Oracle pen to fill out this form. I wonder if they'll charge me a license per form filled out with it.

2 hours later…
16:34
Sup, brotatos?
@NathanC Theres no start menu in 8.1. There's just a start button which brings you back to the metro start screen
Everyone that's misinterpreted "we've added a start button back" to mean "we've added the start menu back" is in for a rude awakening.
indeed, you'll still need to use one of the many third party start menus
Or just use the start screen. It's really not bad
To launch applications in Windows 7, I would hit the Windows key and start typing the application name. To launch applications in Windows 8, I hit the Windows key and start typing the application name. Same exact workflow, different presentation.
the Windows 8 start screen is quite reasonably for search
I just pin everything I use frequently to the task bar
17:00
same
17:34
the bad part about the metro start screen is no folders
Microsoft could learn something from Apple there, iOS does folders pretty great
AND WHY FOLDERS YOU SAY? Try to install something that has a ton of start menu entries..
@MDMarra Booo
@pauska I did once. It was awful.
Sup
other than that the new start screen works just fine
yeah I dont mind the start screen
17:53
Another big problem with 8 is that the metro apps suck, e.g. the image viewer. The older "Picture and Fax Viewer" is better.
Windows key + typing is almost ok, but fails if you want something other than an app. Then you have to mouse over to the top right and pick App, File, Settings, whatever.
found my windows 8 key in my email :p
18:15
@Ward Thats fixed in 8.1
Gonna do an in-place upgrade to windows 8. see you on the dark side.
lol
...after it downloads.
Should I take the bait?
@Wesley you think this is madness...why? I still haven't gotten any "professional" feedback from you. — CrackerJack9 40 mins ago
I'd like to give a real, non sarcastic answer.
I'm surrpised half his comments haven't been flagged as rude or offensive.
..... waits .....
18:32
One of the 70-417 questions asks about Server 2012 Enterprise. That doesn't even exist! Get your act together @MSLearning !
@MDMarra damn
It was asking how you can upgrade from 2012 Standard to Enterprise
And there wasn't a "that doesn't even exist" option
@MDMarra Sounds to me like they just replaced "Server 2008" with 2012
and created the test lol
@MichaelHampton My comments to him are going to be too long. Any chance it could be re-opened just long enough for me to drop an answer on it and the re-closed? =P
@Wesley Brevity is the soul of wit. :)
18:47
@MichaelHampton But I'm stupid. =(
@MichaelHampton Also, I'm commenting bombing him anyway.
@Wesley And he just needs to die in a fire anyway. No need to waste words.
@MichaelHampton He gon' get an eyefull.
And done.
My comment streak starts here:
@CrackerJack9 Culturally professional sysadmins do not build our own servers or modify internal components. I know, I know, "But Google! And Facebook! and BackBlaze!!" They are exceptions to the rule. Exceptions to this culture of "no hardware hacking" within systems administration usually arise from unique circumstances surrounding heretofore unexplored scales of one kind or another. Also, they have doctorate level electrical engineers working on the problems. — Wesley 2 mins ago
@MichaelHampton +1
good afternoon gents
@Magellan Is the lady nearby or can I be my normal self? =P
18:58
@Wesley Ha. You needn't worry about that. She finds you guys hilarious, in a puppy-ish kind of way. She is nearly 50, after all.
and she's thinks I'm cute
God, Scientology is frightening
19:26
@Cole Pretty much. Tough to me to tell the difference between scientologists and mentally-ill people.
@RyJones Good afternoon, sir.
@Magellan good afternoon to you, sir. hope your day is going well
@RyJones Indeed. Nice quiet Saturday in the ghetto.
I hear Elvis every time you say that
anyway... plans for the weekend, beyond haircut?
@RyJones Not much. And I got the hairs ALL cut off. Freezing my ass off now though.
wow. what you put up with!
19:37
@Magellan Gonna watch the Ducks / Huskies game?
GO DUUUUUUUUUCCKKKKSSSS!!!
@Wesley Nah. I don't much go in for football unless it's snowing.
You too @RyJones
@Magellan Cue ball?
@Wesley thanks for the reminder - I'll not take the 520 bridge into town today
ESPN GameDay is in town, and traffic was AFU last night
@RyJones Gonna mess of people.
@Wesley Not quite. 2" up on top, shorter on the sides. Considering that it was 8-9" before, well, it's feels decidedly odd.
@RyJones Ugh. Glad we stayed in and entertained the neighbors. I hate dealing with out-of-towners.
19:39
@Magellan Ah, gotcha, so kinda like mine? fitocracy.com/profile/Nonapeptide/?feed
@Magellan Said like a true adopted washingtonian. =P
@Wesley that's not public, yo.
@Magellan WEEEEEIRD
@Wesley Pfft. i learned to drive in NY.
And yes that's a PowerShell T-shirt I'm wearing. =(
Triple the hair-length all-round.
19:40
Ohhh, okay.
I used to get a #1 buzzcut way back when.
So gents, have a Dilemma. Lenovo laptop or Mac?
what say you, @RyJones?
@Magellan Right now I have only macs and a surface. I really, really like my Air, but the powerbook retina is super nice.
depends on how you'll use it.
I mean, OS X is freebsd under the covers.
@Magellan Hmm... I've had my grubby hands on them all at one time or another. I think I'm locked on Macs since my Air a year ago. I like the constructions, the OS is solid, and it's overall a nice experience if not a tad bit expensive and I wish the warranty could go to five years.
@RyJones 13" or 11"?
@Wesley 13
@RyJones kewl
Mine is 11"
4
19:44
Yeah, the only pisser is the keyboard mapping differences going back & forth between Macs and the PCs at the house.
I wanted just a little more real estate, and the 13" is so light
I'm toying with getting a 13" MBP Retina next year.
@Magellan Yeah, that's a PITA.
I keep trying to buy a retina mbp, then I go to the apple store and pick one up and decide not to
@Magellan you can change the mappings if you like. I haven't done it, but I have been severely tempted just so I can map windows-L to lock screen on the macs
@RyJones Hmm. I may just do that. I've been told there's an app to flip the Ctl and Alt key functions to resemble PCs. I won't be doing any IT Support of the hardware, so won't be using anyone else's PCs much to have to deal with the base mapping.
