Finally got my 2012 R2 .iso. Let's give this a go.

@DennisKaarsemaker No, but I can edit it.

A: Why is the f word still allowed in profiles?

Jeff AtwoodThe user page is a reflection of that user and it is their page to do with what they will. (Within reason, of course.) We also allow explicit self-promotion on the user page, which is not allowed in posts, either.

@TomO'Connor Going home tonight. Got to get smart for tomrorow. Should be back to normall next week.
@t1nt1n What's tomorrow?
@TomO'Connor Interview
@t1nt1n Cool
Wherebouts?
@TomO'Connor Brum
Hmmm... I've been assigned a ticket stating ".NET browser templates for IE10 not working - suddenly started working again" and they want me to work out a root cause analysis. When asked when the erratic behavior stopped the response from the customer was "sometime between May and now" -_-

I think I'm in love with Sarah Sharp marc.info/?l=linux-kernel&m=137391401112514&w=2
@JennyD: eheh. I was disagreeing with her viewpoint the other day
I felt the missed the essence of why and who linus cusses out people
and is trying to change a community to her outlook without entirely understanding it
(and goddamnit, I need to slip "management by perkele" into an assignment or report somehow. And I have one module to do it in :/)
@JourneymanGeek Well, I've not been a part of that community since I don't do kernel development. I just thought that email was very well written and a good example of how it's entirely possible to be very clear about what you think is wrong without having to be abusive.
I also think that a community that has "has to be able to take abuse from persons in power" as a standard is likely to lose out on a lot of talented people.
Dan
Dan
@t1nt1n Whereabouts?
10:41
@RyanRies Lync meetings aren't hooked into our meeting place server :( the Cisco guys only have web ex tied into conference voice :(
@Dan jewelry quarter
oh cool, our datacenter forces us to use a central firewall cluster which they manage
one node just failed and the other one didn't take over, awesome.
10:59
@JourneymanGeek there is no good "why" to be a linus-level asshat. None. Hell, the only reason I don't want to get into kernel development is that asshat attitude that just says it's not worth wasting time on communicating with him.
Dan
Dan
@t1nt1n Heh, I've got a mate who works there. Need any inside knowledge?
@JennyD: depends on whether you see it as abuse. He's capable of communicating without being an asshat. Usually when he explodes, its something thats seriously annoying - I think the two most recent ones were when redhat wanted PE signing and one of the devs broke KDE, then tried to say it wasn't his fault
I'm not saying she's wrong, but I'm thinking there's much more to cussing at someone than abuse
@Dan Where at Supreem?
headesks
I need to plan my finances better.
well, not money, but where it is.

@tombull89: Prolly from the subcontinent
We had two power cuts at home last night - both just for a second about 20 minutes apart but enough to kill everything.
I'm glad I wasn't playing an online game because I would have just got my machine back up and re-joined the server again only to have my machine die again.
@tombull89 yes, that would have been disasterous
the planets would go out of orbit etc
@pauska well, when Battlefield tracks your quitting rate...:P

Do you all know about the HP "waiting for rebuild" RAID status?

Q: HP Proliant ML350 G5 SAS HDD

Gurpreet SinghI am getting problem in HP Proliant ML350 G5. Some few days back one of the SAS HDD failed. It was 146GB SAS 15krpm HDD. We got new one which is 146GB SAS 10k rpm HDD. Its on RAID 1(1+0) configuration. We replaced the SAS HDD but its not rebuilding. We get message when rebooting server to do AU...

I'm wondering how other controllers display this condition.
Dan
Dan
Not seen that but it doesn't sound like much fun
@Dan usually happens with RAID5 setups... the URE condition.
but can happen in RAID 1+0 with the wrong two disks.
Dan
Dan
@ewwhite RAID whatnow ;)
@ewwhite Some guy tried to, essentially, call me stupid for referring to a HP mirror as RAID10 the other day. It felt good showing him the console and telling to, again essentially, fuck off.
yeah, it's RAID 1+0 even with two disks.
Dan
Dan
It's odd, but I can see the logic I guess
11:47
fecking bugs. I have one on the inside of my TFT
@ewwhite maybe the two disks doesn't have the same sector size/sector count?
@pauska Rare in HP-land... this only happened with 72GB disks.

A: Proliant server will not accept new hard disks in RAID 1+0?

ewwhiteYou may have a spare (replacement) drive whose size in sectors is slightly less than the original drive. What operating system are you using? Dan
@t1nt1n And it's definitely not an animated GIF?
@dan
@dan its moveing around. You can see its legs and stuff. let me try and get a pic.
@pauska But hopefully the OP will post his output. I'm betting the drive's been dead for awhile
11:50
I wonder how downvoted that would be if I openeded it as a question "My TFT has a bug behind it" How do I de-bug it.
But it would be OT for SF would need to go to SO
@t1nt1n Pretty sure that's been asked/answered on SU already.

11:58
@JourneymanGeek What you need to hide money?
@Jacob: no, I transfer money to paypal for paying for some stuff
so happens that 1) the steam summer sale
2) shipping for my pen (paid for it via debit card)
3) VPS bill
all are at the same time ;p
@JourneymanGeek You don't let paypal just pull it from bank account?
@Jacob: You need a credit/debit card for that I think
1 min ago, by Journeyman Geek
2) shipping for my pen (paid for it via debit card)
It appears you have one?
@Jacob: different account
12:01
In the US it uses ACH to pull money from bank accounts
I have two accounts - one's long term savings, one's for monthly allowance, and short term things
its messy ;p
@JourneymanGeek I have 5 accounts between two banks, you just need to plan :)
@Jacob: didn't I say that? ;p
@JourneymanGeek Unless you have crazy bank restrictions a short term savings isn't too important
@Jacob: more of a historical mess
the money in the 'long term' account is mine
the one I use for day to day stuff isn't 'entirely' mine - I just draw on it for my allowance, and it so happens that includes transfers to paypal
12:08
@JourneymanGeek I don't see the issue?
@Jacob: I should have planned better ;p
just that, really
@JourneymanGeek Let's talk about planning better. :)
I just put my Uni tuition on a credit card
Morning all.
@NathanC hi
@Jacob: I prefer cash mostly
and usually I plan purchases months in advance
so its less a lack of financial planning, and more a lack of remembering I had this due ;p
12:12
I'm excited that we're finally getting a second server as a VM host. Moar powah!
:p
@JourneymanGeek I was making a joke about myself

@tombull89 I know the Metro has never been one of the classier publications, but when did it become 4Chan?
Do you guys always take responsibility for your work fuck-ups?
Dan
Dan
@ewwhite Depends on your definition. I'd never flat out lie, but if I can rescue myself and never speak of it again then I consider that acceptable
This sucks, the stupid softdev wrote a module that is way over priced, and instead I have to try to follow this hostbillforums.com/index.php/topic,268.0.html
@Dan Hmm. I did think "meme? in metro?"
@ewwhite Yes, although the worst thing I've done in work is shut down the wrong (virtual) server.
12:36
@Jacob sending things today
@ewwhite :)
Dan
Dan
@tombull89 Wish that was the worst thing I've done
@Dan @tombull89 I keep finding myself in traps at work.
For instance...
The gateway address there should be 10.80.23.252...
but I didn't know that
and now there's no way to change it in vCloud Director.
one in about ten mistakes I made in this build.
Dan
Dan
Wha'? How can there be no way to change it :o
another team member... No doesn’t look like it [can be changed]. Unfortunately in order to change it we need to remove the network…. Which I tried to do … but It would not let me, even after I removed all traces of it being utilized.
12:39
@ewwhite yep, always and quickly too - I know I joke on here and all but integrity is key
Dan
Dan
I just refuse to believe it can't be change
And I don't know whether to blame myself for not knowing the gateway was .252 instead of .1... or to blame the documentation... or to blame the process and nuttiness of vCloud Director.
But I'm trying to figure out why all of these mistakes seem to follow me.
@ewwhite: I'd see this as a chance to document ;p
@JourneymanGeek As in, I should document, or the VMware team should?
Dan
Dan
@ewwhite Well, serious question - but whose fault is it? I mean, if Default Gateways are always .1 in your org, or the docs you were working to say it was .1 then I don't think you're that accountable. Either way, the root cause is director being shit there IMHO.
@ewwhite You're probably like me and try to do too much at one time, too quicky
12:41
@ewwhite: document internally. Bitch at VMware if you have the pull to get it fixed
@JourneymanGeek I was working off of a 6-page Word document from my internal VMware team.
Dan
Dan
I mentioned it here, but yesterday I typo'd an IP address and wound up comissioning a server on the wrong box. As i thappens it doesn't matter (apart from wasting my time), but that could have been a real fucker
@ewwhite: In which case, the documentation needs to be updated
(since blaming people apparently is Bad Management Practice.... )
@Dan Yesterday, I was having internet issues with the same cluster.
and it turned out that a firewall's VIP address was placed at the same IP as my core router's.
I think our networking is too complex.
but maybe that's the norm for ISP-type places.
Dan
Dan
This just sounds like messy communication/documentation/design imho
I mean, don't you guys keep some kind of nice IP schema spreadsheet?
12:44
@JourneymanGeek a checklist would be good. More automation may be better...
@Dan we're multi-tenant... so I have to go to 5 places to determine IP addresses.
sounds like it all needs to be standardized either way...
@ewwhite: More automation is always better ;p
For instance, the ILO/IPMI for this setup was on 10.80.23.0/24... So I used that for my ESXi hosts.
Dan
Dan
We don't really do what you guys do, but every single one of our customers/systems has an Excel spreadsheet which details all the 'core' information. VLANs, IP's, ILOs etc etc etc
enforce that the default gateway (a router or a firewall or a clustered router or a clustered firewall VIP) always is at .1
putting default gateways on different ip's across tenants is a guaranteed way of making shit like this happen
12:46
but it turned out that I needed a vlan 1107 for the hosts, and that 10.250.160.x/27 network wasn't created.
so I had to re-IP everything once running.
Dan
Dan
@pauska *Subnet ID + 1 :D
@Dan: embarassingly, I have a notebook with that.
we have a /24 carved into multiple /27's for all ESXi hosts now.
and I mean, a cheap little paper one ;p
(but dinky little place, 2 other people and a dog...so meh)
so the core router is the bottom of the range (VIP), with two VRRP router IPs above it. And the public firewall IP is the top of that /27 range.
12:48
this is what I'm enjoying today (bottom post): social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/exchange/en-US/…
so in this case... /27, with a gateway IP of .129 - First useable for the hosts .132. Internet firewall .158.
@pauska that seems like a bad issue for such a developed/mature product.
@pauska Nearly any ISP/webhost has that issue
Dan
Dan
Oh....Citrix:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Citrix\WFShell
Name: LockOnReconnect
Type: REG_DWORD
Data: <0=ON (default); any other value=OFF>
@Dan and yes, that is what I meant
@Jacob you come from ISP-land... the networking is way more complex than in other organizations, right?
12:51
I always reserve the first ten IP's on any subnet for routers/firewalls
Dan
Dan
@pauska I know, I was just feeling awkward
@ewwhite As I've seen it, it has been.
it's always the same design - .1 HSRP router or ASA failover, .2 first router/first ASA, .3 second router/second ASA
@pauska I mean sometimes we get stuff in chunks
on linknets between the bgp routers and the firewalls it looks a bit different, but that never gets configured more than once
12:53
@pauska We're similar... except some networks only have one gateway... and other have a VIP with VRRP/HSRP... and then others are private-only.
it's a bit of a cluster...
@ewwhite I've also worked for an ISP, and yes, much more complex as you usually have to carve up public IP subnets into tiny pieces to get the most out of them
@ewwhite the ones with a single gateway IP should still have the IP's used for HSRP/VRRP reserved
So the example I posted above is the IP handed out to cloud virtual machines by vCloud. Is .252 counter-intuitive?
what happens if a customer suddenly needs HSRP? if the IP's arent reserved from the beginning you have to pick stuff all around the subnet, which makes it even more impossible to prevent fuckups in the future
(it's a NAT gateway)
Shouldn't it be .254 or .1 ?
with the IPs above and below reserved for VRRP?
or maybe I'm just butt-hurt that I can't change the damn IP address.
why use the last IP's for gateway stuff? it's opposite for the normal
12:56
@pauska We don't have the space to reserve IPs if people aren't using/paying for them.
Dan
Dan
@pauska I see it loads to be fair
@Jacob I am talking about ewwhite's workplace, where they employ clustered/failover routers/firewalls for some tenants..
@Dan I don't

A: Blocking UDP packets with a length of 4

Tom O'ConnorThis looks like a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, and if it's saturating the inbound network connection to your edge (either a router, or a server), then no amount of firewalling inside your network will fix this, as the link to you is already saturated. The recommended method of DD...

@ewwhite yeah, 252 does seem odd. We're .254 here.
@pauska I think .1 is a core router interface, but .252 is a NAT gateway.
12:57
maybe UK/US people are stupid then!
I think we need a canonical DDoS mitigation answer.
and in my other non-work simple networks, I place the routing decisions on the L3 switch or a router... if internet, route out to the ASA...
but everyone gets the same gateway.
Dan
Dan
@pauska I don't think it's any less logical to have your DFGW at the end of the range vs the start really

@Dan except that it's the defacto way of doing it
does anyone know if the ASA enforces global timeouts even when it's not defined in the config?
@pauska from a CLI session or VPN?
13:02
@ewwhite nevermind, turns out the CLI config actually has timeouts, while ASDM just shows them as unchecked
Dan
Dan
@pauska It's....not, though. I see about 50/50
I wonder why exchange complains about our firewall not keeping connections open long enough, and I'm not versed in the different connection states
is a half closed connection the same as a sleeping http(s) session?
Dan
Dan
@pauska I'd have thought an idle HTTPS session for push e-mail would be a normal, full open session. Doesn't it have to send keepalives for that purpose?
Well, it should.. it's push, so it should stay active all the time
@pauska "Don't."
Dan
Dan
13:06
Half open/closd (I'm assuming these terms are interchangable) would be when one side has closed the connection and now it's fucked?
meh, I'll try to bump half-closed up to 15 minutes and see if that sorts it
the ASA default limit is 10 minutes, and exchange is complaining that activesync session are being average terminated after 9 minutes..
Dan
Dan
I don't think a push e-mail connection should be sitting at half-closed apart from during connection/disconnection
But I'll grant that that is a coincidence!
Is it just me or does the edit to serverfault.com/posts/523941/revisions make not sense and worse it makes the question and it's title contradictory ?
@Iain I dunno. Let's just delete the question and not tell anyone.

@ewwhite Is this just one server?
@tombull89 Yeah, one of our client's HP Gen8 servers that they bought on their own.
I'd say "burn it"

maybe 9 months

@Dan makes HP look bad
Dan
Dan
13:17
@ewwhite Meh, shit breaks
@ewwhite it's certaintly fit for a HP support case, they should replace the mobo
Yep. New server... it told me what was wrong. Case closed.
Dan
Dan
On a serious note, is this a 'D'OA issue, or was it tested okay before storage?
@Dan it tested okay... but it's pretty much a bad machine
13:25
Review check, I guess.
ahh, it was
Yeah they tend to add random stuff like that. It's obvious when you read it but it must catch out so many people that just mash the "approve" button.
I got fed up with audits so I gave up on /review
adding random stuff is TEN TIMES better than the audits I've gotten before

4
@Dan agreed - but most of the tory MPs are only doing what they THINK their OAP constituents want so they can cling onto their jobs
Dan
Dan
@Chopper3 Yep, pathetic really
It's one of those debates that I can't sensibly engage in because none of the opposition logic stacks up. I just don't get their beef, beyond obvious homophobia
13:46
@Dan Unfortunately I think the question is more complicated than that. We know from a societal viewpoint that we need to restrict others' freedoms (eg killing anyone you fancy should have consequences). But where exactly do we draw the line. I would agree that dictating who you can marry, or form a relationship with seems overstepping - but obviously there are others who disagree.
@ChrisS with you on societal controls but when some attempt to base those decisions on a work of fiction instead of facts then I get concerned
Dan
Dan
@ChrisS Yes, but there's no logic as to why gay couples are different to straight couples.
@Dan An nuclear family consisting of a single sex can not reproduce... There's some historical significance to that. Lots of people cling to history like nothing's changed.
Dan
Dan
@ChrisS That's bollocks though - should we restrict marriage to couples who can reproduce?
@Chopper3 You guys are so spoiled over there - political decisions based on facts. This is Merica, land of pure decisions making, based on pure fictions. =]
13:50
@ChrisS :)
Dan
Dan
And let's face, marriage was never ever about love or family - it was just good olf fashioned business
@Dan I'm not trying to defend that point of view - I've said the exact same thing and never got a satisfactory answer.
I wish I had someone to marry.
@TomO'Connor You wont find them in the Comms Rooms... more likely than not
Dan
Dan
@ChrisS Sorry, I know - but that's my point, there's no actual logic from the opposition because the only "physical" limitations apply to millions of straight couples.
13:52
@ChrisS There's always Cole.
@Dan Oh, also, RELIGION... I've had that one pulled on me like something that is beyond reproach.
Dan
Dan
@TomO'Connor But you're not a girl.
@ChrisS The only good thing about religious reasoning is that you know they're desparate!
@Dan Neither is he.
Dan
Dan
@TomO'Connor I know, but Cole dates girls?
Seriously, why does anyone care about homosexuality? Let the people be happy and marry who the want.
Dan
Dan
13:56

@Dan Correct, and AFAIK he has a significant other.
@Jacob But TEH BIBLE says it's wrong.
@Jacob I care more about what sports teams someone supports than their sexuality
@Dan More commonly than not, it's not desperation, but willfully refusing to think.
@tombull89 So? Don't do it yourself.
13:57
Course the bible also says some other crazy stuff.
Dan
Dan
@ChrisS There's certainly that! Last time I checked my Vicar brother-in-law didn't care about gay priests and Im' putting that down to him not being a dick
It's the same thing as abortions. Would I prefer you not get one? Yes, but at the same time I won't stop you from your right to make that decision yourself
Dan
Dan
See, although I'm pro choice I can actually get that there's a debate there and it's hard to draw a line. I still think some of the pro-"Life" crowd are a disgrace though
@Chopper3 What are "sports"?
See. Even the foreign guys are taken.
Dan
Dan
14:00
@TomO'Connor And even I'm getting married soon. I never told you, but you were my fallback plan
5
@Dan It all comes down to personal freedom. I might not like your decision, but it's still yours to make.
Dan
Dan
@Jacob I agree, but there is a 3rd party involved with abortion at least.
@Chopper3 United FTW!
@ChrisS fuck you!
@Jacob There's only one "sports" outside the US: Soccer (they call it football, or association football)
14:02
Oh and TO THE ASSHOLES WHO BANNED STEMCELL RESEARCH: You suck! It could really help some of us.
@ChrisS I don't understand why anyone would would partake in physical exercise for fun?!?
@Jacob They didn't ban stemcell research. They banned public funding for stemcell research where something that certain people construe as "life" is created just to harvest the stemcells, then "killed".
Dan
Dan
@Jacob I ran 10 miles last night, I wouldn't define it as fun, though
@Jacob I played (Gridiron) Football in gradeschool and highschool. It's fun.
@Dan Yeah, that's the tough part it's why I'm personally against the idea, but I'm not sure that government has the right per the social contract to tell you that you can't.
Anyhow back to the undeniable fact: Homophobia is just silly outrageously idiotic.
@Jacob Unless you were raised for many years by people who instilled in you that you should fear it. Then it doesn't seem silly....

Dan
@ChrisS This is no way related to homphobia, but my fiancees parents were/are very religious and took the church extremely seriously. Yet, the other day the MIL passed a comment about how it's wrong to raise a child as a vegan.... People are weird
@MikeyB I suppose in certain areas. Rugby is fun to watch. Just can't get into Cricket at all.
@ChrisS People were raised to be afraid of a lot of things.
I still see distrust of black people, and that's just stupid.
14:13
@Jacob Far more efficient to just distrust people in general.
huh, a question i already flagged like two weeks ago popped into the review queue

I hated jogging but it's theonly fitness I've properly stuck at, plus I have little excuse for not doing it when staying away. This silly race I'm signed up for has really made me push my training forwards, too
I think iLivid must be called that because it makes you livid.

@ChrisS I wonder how they managed to use 60 minutes to discover that their BGP peering was borked and fix it..
@Dan yeah, same here - the race I attended was the reason why I jogged.. I'm not motivated to jog anymore after finishing it, so I guess soccer + squash + training room is enough for me
and we also play 5-by-5 every week, it's at a special .. binge
I think our ISP made a screwed up config change. You could ping IP addresses (like Google DNS) but would not do DNS resolution or allow TCP traffic

@pauska How was the race, by the way
I don't know how to explain it in english.. it's a really small court with protective nets all around
so the ball never goes out of play
run-o-matic in other words
@Dan like shit

@pauska Stats?
I ran at 2m02s, the average time was 1m40s..

What was the distance?
got a extremely bad start, the runner before me came WAY faster than the rest of the field, so I wasn't ready for him.. he ran past me, had to sprint like a motherfucker to reach him (he went running further on, thinking that I didn't show up)
800 meters or something like that
At home he feels like a tourist
so yeah, that bad start pretty much imploded my lungs, so I was basically fucked after 200m
but I don't care really, running is not for me
squash for teh win.. EXTREME exercise

A 2 minute 800m isn't slow running though!
I need to work on speed, but I find it so less satisfying than completing distance
no I ran like hell, but still shit compared to the rest
smart and pretty, she has a great future

@Travis I used to say the same thing, but once the progress starts it's actually kinda fun. And while I'm not athlete, knowing that I could outrun anyone who doesn't actively train is a nice feeling. It's also fun to drive 10 miles in a car and think "Heh, I could run that"
Plus I was properly unfit before. My first running route was 1.4 miles and took me well over 20 minutes. I could easily do over 2 in that time, and I can do 10 miles at a 2 - 3 minutes per mile faster than that now. It just takes time and effort and I don't put nearly enough of those in, either.

12 years military...still hate running :)
I'm a heck of a sprinter though. For a fat kid I am really fast for short distances

:D
I just never got taught how to properly run either so it was always an effort. I ran a 2 mile test one time and it just felt "right" and I was able to get a really good 2 mile time

I just wish I'd have started much sooner
What I'm amazed at today is that my legs aren't sore. Proves that training helps, really - think it's the first time I've been okay after a >7 mile run
